I love Cook Out! You can get so much for your money and the food is so good. The menu is huge so you're bound to find something you will like. My favorite thing to order is the burger tray with onion rings :) Sometimes I treat myself to a milkshake. Their milkshakes are bomb! Personal favorite is the peanut butter fudge. This location can get pretty busy depending on the time of day. I used to come here for my lunch break and sometimes there's a bit of a wait but nothing too crazy in my experience. My only beef with this place is that my order has been incorrect a couple times when I've gone through the drive thru and I wonder if it's their intercom system. The attendant who took our order through drive through was very rude. Luckily for her the milkshakes we ordered made us want to come back. It wasn't busy enough for her to be so impatient. We simply asked if they put Graham crackers into their cheesecake milkshakes (because sonic uses Graham crackers in theirs), she rudely said we don't have Graham crackers. I have come to cook out 3 or 4 different times to try the different sides. My final assessment is that I don't believe the hype. The portion sizes are pretty small but with the $5.49 (3.40 for the tray 1.99 for the drink) price, I shouldn't be surprised. The fries are meh compared to other fast food places. The burgers are tiny and it's .45 cents for cheese and .10 cents for tomato. My bun seemed to be old on my latest trip. The Cheddar bites are good but again the portion is small. I, too, recently found out that a Cook-out was in the area, but had no idea where. Of all the places, it's outside of Janah, an already congested Military Highway. I agree with others, the lack of space is a huge negative. The drive-thru is always slammed solid, there's not a seat to be had in the dining room, and parking...forget about it. Putting it elsewhere may have given them a larger dining and parking lot. I was there this past Saturday around 11 am and after sitting in the drive-thru for 10 mins without moving and inch, I gave up. I came back the same evening and wisely decided to park down the street. I was able to order and do take-out in less than 15 minutes. That's a plus at such a busy place, in my opinion. The food was average, though. I decided on the half-pounder with cheese, X-lettuce, X-tomatoes, mustard, ketchup, and grilled onion. The beef itself was thick and meaty, but it didn't have the taste that I expected. I knew I was eating beef, but it just didn't stand out. I also had an order of fries, fresh-cut style, but again, nothing spectular. The strawberry milkshake was the best part of the meal. It has so thick that I couldn't suck it up the straw. There was a spoon in the bag, but I prefer to let it melt a bit before putting that straw to use. Overall, the food at Cook-Out was average. I, too, will probably patronize this restaurant from time to time. There's a rumor, though, that the shell-of-a-building next to One Life Fitness on Monticello in Norfolk is also a futureCook-Out. Even though the line was wrapped around the building TWICE at 10:30 PM on a Saturday night, & the intercom system for both drive-thrus wasn't working, forcing them to take orders by hand, the line iterated fairly quickly, & this was truly the BEST fast food burger I've ever sank my fangs into. A regular burger, "cheddar style" (cheese, bacon, grilled onions) will run you $4.10, and most of the sides are less than $2, so you can stuff yourself silly with quality food for a very reasonable price. Until the hype dies down, if you're impatient or have anger management issues, please don't eat here. I almost got run over by a car full of drunken folks not paying attention to the flow of traffic. Why do people come here? While the quality of the food was good, it wasn't anything special. The portions were small and I'm pretty sure there was no love added to my burger. The cashier was friendly and attentive but that menu is scattered and has no appeal to the eye. The best part out of place was the price. So I decided to give this a try because of my fellow Yelpy friends liked it. That and the fact that it smelled so good as I was driving by. What is with the line?!?! That was the thought I had because wow the line. Ok I skipped on the milkshakes because it was about 40 degrees outside. I stuck with burgers, fries and hush puppies and you know what??? I never thought it was possible to be impressed with a fast food joint..but i am! I originally had my doubts, seeing as I don't really like typical fast food (save chick-fila) but I was definitely in for a surprise. The first time I went it was super busy. There was even someone with a remote tablet/laptop thing that was able to accept credit cards, so the orders went in quickly. The cashiers were all on top of their game, calling out their code names as we ordered. We sat down on a super cool wooden table..(think log cabin style) and within 5 minutes me and my husband's order was ready for pickup. We both got the cook-out trays which is a steal, for under $5. (you get an entree, 2 sides and a large drink). We tried the 1/4 lb burger & both got a decent amount of fries, but be warned if you get onion rings or chicken nuggets they give you like 3...however its still equals up to a good amount of food! At another visit, I had the corndog (as a side! what!) and it was really good, fresh tasting and bigger than sonic's. Overall, the burger easily beats out any fast food. It is fresh and has a char-grilled taste... it could easily be compared to five guys but is a step below due to the fact you can't get as many toppings free. Fries are always hot and fresh here...sometimes lava hot, but I'd rather have that than cold fries. This place is fast-food so don't expect expensive restaurant quality or a healthy option,but what you can expect is fresh tasty food. I will be back. Finally a decent burger! Since moving to Norfolk from New York I have been disappointed at every turn when it comes to food. The Chinese food sucks, the pizza sucks and sushi is horrible. So I gave up all hope when it came to finding a good burger. Nothing fancy just a decent burger that wouldn't make me want to fly to NY to cheeburger cheeburger. This place has a great burger that is always hot and juicy. I always get the burger cookout style. It comes with chili, cole slaw, mustard and sweet onions. It is messy but it is great and it never disappoints. If I had something bad to say about this place it would be that it is always crowded. Between being a Christian establishment, and the AWESOME food, there isn't really anything bad to say about CookOut. I've never gone through the drive-thru, so I can't give you thoughts on that. But I know that, when I go in, it doesn't take more than 5 minutes to get your food once you've ordered it. The lines move quickly; and if the line inside gets really long, they'll have employees write your order down so you can hand them what was written down, and it doesn't take but 10(sih) seconds to put in. I like this place because the food is cheap, fast, and they give you a lot. Other than that it's not that special; however, the milkshakes are so good. Thick and filled with toppings, you definately get your money's worth when you purchase a milkshake compared to other places. May I suggest the Oreo Cheesecake Milkshake. It's to DIE for. The snickers cheesecake and the reeses cheesecake are also heavenly! Super busy, since they just opened. Parking & Seating. Parking is horrible and inside seating it worse. People standing around holding their food waiting for a seat to open. Drive through line blocks people trying to back out of parking spots. Food is good but... 1/4 burger (cheddar style) seemed small. Hush puppies tasted as if they were deep fried in the same oil the onion rings are fried in. No sauce was offered for chicken strips, even though the menu says it comes with it. Shakes are really good and they have a huge selection. No kids meals!? Price. $28.73 for 2 adults and 2 kids is kinda expensive. Compared to: 1/4 is smaller than McDonalds, but taste better. Reminds me of Five Guys, but way less greasy. Not as good as In-N-Out for all you West Coast people, but I have only tried Cook Out 1 time. I will go back to try more items on the menu. read more

I've tried to give this place numerous chances and they have failed every single one. First trip, I ordered hush puppies, a cheeseburger with everything (no bacon) and watermelon shake. The watermelon shake was DELICIOUS, but when I opened my bag when I got home, it had a corn dog, fries and small bacon cheeseburger with nothing else on it. I threw everything away but the shake. Second trip I got the shake and a cheeseburger with "lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles and mayo /ketchup and mustard." When I got back to work, I had a burger with lettuce and mayo. That was it. My third and final trip there, I got a shake and the same burger I ordered before. When I was trying to place your order, the person on the speaker kept interrupting me and telling me to "hang on a minute" and then told me to stop talking because they couldn't understand me. Like uhhhhh.... How does that even make sense? I don't have a speech problem or accent and I doubt they are going to read my mind.... . Anyway, my burger had ketchup but no mayo or mustard, and they gave me a strawberry shake instead of watermelon. So three out of three orders wrong, and rude/incompetent service. For the price, this place is excellent. The burgers are huge, tasty, and very messy. The BBQ plate is pretty good, the BBQ being the best part of it. Nice and vinegar-y. Cole slaw is "meh" with practically no flavor but the hush puppies are good and the onion rings don't dissapoint. The menu is pretty messy and confusing and for god's sake they JUST opened could they not have installed a nice, working drive through speaker?! That thing is such a piece of crap. The staff has always been pleasant and helpful and our order has always been correct even when ordering for more than 5 people at the drive though. And honestly, I can't take my kids to McDonalds for happy meals for less than $20 but I can feed 4 adults with drinks and sides for less than $25 here. Can't beat that. read more

It is extremely busy, but they moved through the lines pretty efficiently. They were, like other people have reported, taking orders by hand. The food was SUPERB for the price. If you get the meal, for just under $6 a person you can eat a Five Guys quality burger for much cheaper. (I had mine cheddar style). The food was excellent. So why did I give them 3 stars? Well, I ordered two meals on two different days and they managed to get both of the drinks wrong both times. That was irritating. Also, my coworker reported he ordered the chicken nuggets and it only included a grant total of 2 nuggets (We both got the bacon wrap the second time, so I'm not sure if this is how things are supposed to be). Also, the shake machine was broken, so I never got the product I actually went there to get (I hear they are amazing). TL;DR version. Pros: Cheap, EXCELLENT food, and they do /not/ try to nickel and dime you on toppings/sides (The bacon wrap has... a lot of bacon in it for a side item) Cons: Seem to have some kinks in their ordering process, as they made errors on both orders both times I came there, things seem to be broken constantly even though they just opened. read more

So I wanted to wait for the hype to die down before trying this place. I mean, who really wants to wait in line while people direct you to move closer when there is a 1/2 inch of space between your bumper and the car in front of you?? The lines didn't appear long from our point of view until we drove into the parking lot/drive-thru lanes. Ugh...we would be waiting and because we had never been here I asked the guy working the lot if they had menus to look at. His response, "no, we stopped doing that". What?? Why?? No wonder it takes so long for the lines to move!! So I looked it up online while I waited... Another person working the lines approached my car and wanted to take my order, problem was we still didn't know what we wanted. She recommended the "tray" because it was the best value - 1 "sandwich", 2 sides and a drink and prices vary depending on what you get. Ok, cool let's try that. So I ordered the cheddar burger (bacon, mayo, grilled onions) with onion rings and hushpuppies with a sweet tea. So let me also say that their "sides" are odd, things like a quesadilla, bacon wrap, corndog, chicken nuggets, I mean - those seem more like entree type choices. But anyway...once we finally got our food and made it home I opened up my "tray" to discover about 5 onion rings and 8 little hushpuppies. They weren't bad but they weren't amazing either. The burger was just okay. It tasted like something I could make myself. The onions didn't taste sauteed or grilled or anything for that matter. I actually had to take them off because there was just too much on my burger. I honestly would rather go to Five Guys for a burger and fries than wait in this line again. I'm trying my hardest to understand how others have had 5 star experiences here because I just don't see it. And one or two items on a menu doesn't make an entire establishment the "as good as it gets". Our total for two people was $13. Burgers, fries and a two lane drive thru, not my cup of tea. It's next to a favorite place (Lowes) so I have had many opportunities to see the lines that have still not died down. We put aside my dislike of fast food and went in. I found the menu, posted above the order counter, to be confusing...we let a couple of people to go ahead of us while we worked out the puzzle. We got our number and searched for an empty table. This is when I starting liking the place. They have a person solely to clear and wash the tables as well as keep the self serve soda machines stocked. Our number was called as I held the table and the hub was getting his beverage, quite quick. While some people call the burgers small I call them perfect, just like Mom makes. It's more like a flattened meatball, not a flattened pancake, awesome. My sides were chili (which I dumped on my burger) and crisp coleslaw. Fast Food, Milkshakes, Cheap, Good! What can I say...I'm a fan of this fast food chain! Sometimes taking my family to a sit down restaurant just isn't an option for many reasons...cost...time...etc. but I HATE McDonalds and I'm sick of Wendy's! Soooo if there is a cookout near by we go there. I feel like the food is much healthier then your average fast food joint. So Many options and you get a ton of food for under $6. I usually get the grilled chicken sandwich platter and it comes with 2 sides so French fries and onion rings it is. And of course I get a shake. Their shakes are amazing!!! Thick and an insane amount of flavor choices. The hot dog platter is perfect for my 2 little ones because it comes with 2 dogs. Then my older has a burger. Order it anyway you like tons of toppings. I feed all of in with shakes for under 20.00. I'm yes please. And this location is clean! The service is fast. The drive through is a bit confusing and crazy but we usually go in anyway read more

Maybe it is because I lived in Hawaii for the last 3 years and couldn't easily find a cheap place to eat but WOW....I'm impressed! The prices are ridiculously low and the food was pretty good. I read the negative comments and I have to say- I didn't have any problems the two times I went this week. I happened to be in the area, at Target of course, around 5pm and wanted a quick early dinner. I decided to try out the drive-through. Easy! Now- food wise....it really cracks me up that some people have complained about the quantity of the food....mainly- burger size. It is by weight....as the menu clearly states. Have y'all never cooked a burger at home before? 1/4 lb of ground beef makes a puffy small disk- not the thin wide frisbee that you get at fast food places. You are getting the same amount of meat, if not more if you order 1/2 lb. or a double! If you equate the size of the bun with your satisfaction....maybe this place isn't for you. Meanwhile- I was pretty happy in my mouth. I tried the one with the slaw and chili...oops I forgot the name. I think it had the right amount of both condiments. It was messy but not overwhelming. I ordered a large cajun style french fry as well. A large is more than enough for one person and most likely a good size to share....unless you are a fatty like me. I don't share.
