First passport stamp--bougie ice series continues! As part of our Sweet Tooth Saturday Passport Series, we made a stop at Strawberry Fields, and this little spot was an absolute gem! It's a small, charming place with a lovely variety of flavors--and the staff was super kind and patient while we sampled quite a few options before making our final picks. (They didn't rush us at all, which was really appreciated.) I ended up going with the Strawberry Basil Gelato, which was light, refreshing, and surprisingly delicious--especially considering I don't usually go for strawberry anything. But this combo? It was giving elevated, not-too-sweet, and just the right balance. I think I'm officially in my icy era... we've done snowballs, Italian ices, and now gelato--so I'm fully committed to the frozen life right now. Is it dog friendly? Not quite. Dogs aren't allowed inside, but they do have outdoor seating where you can sit with your pup, so we'll call it half dog-friendly. Lexi got to enjoy the vibes from the patio, at least. I was surprised at how small the shop was, with just a few guests inside, it felt very tight. You'll have to take your treat to go! They had so many yummy flavors, it was hard to choose! A cute gelato spot in the best area in Norfolk! Been wanting to go here for a while now and it did not disappoint. It's a little shop packed with delicious gelato flavors. They offer samples which is perfect. 3 different sizes -- you can do 2 flavors even if you get a kid's size! We got a kid's size of the milk & honey and stracciatella together, then a regular size of the french chocolate. Friendly staff! There are some tables with umbrellas outside since there's no space to sit inside. There is street parking. Just park in the neighborhoods nearby and walk. I originally found this place on Tiktok and set my mind on going. However, some weeks passed and I stumbled upon the steps after dinner because of course we were craving a sweet treat. I love how they always have something different! I ordered the tea and biscuit and oh my goodness! I definitely felt like it was tea time at the Buckingham Palace lol. They only have outdoor sitting only. And it is very limited. You walk up, place an order all outdoors. There's no parking lot available but street parking is plenty. Came here after a small get together at a brewery nearby and it was the perfect spot to relieve my sweet tooth. The service was quick. They didn't have anyone there upon entry, by a nice sign to ring the bell was helpful. Once we rang it, we were met with a friendly employee who answered any questions we had. I ordered the kids size and it was just the right amount of gelato. They let us get half one flavor and half another and I loved how they literally put half on each size of the cup instead of on top of each other, so we could really enjoy each flavor. This is probably one of my favorite places in town! I love the from-scratch gelato from here and it keeps me coming back whenever the sweet tooth hits. A bit pricey, but this cute local business seriously makes some of the best "smoothies" I've ever had. I put it in quotations because many (if not all?) contain gelato making them more of a milkshake to me. Nonetheless, they are delicious, freshly made, and made with fast and friendly service. I walked in with some friends on a Friday afternoon. There was only one woman there working the shop and she provided excellent customer service. I tried a few samples and settled on the butter cake flavor. I was curious to see how it compares to Jeni's butter cake ice cream. It's a unique flavor on its own and I really enjoyed it. There's no seating in the shop so it's carry-out only. Their flavor of the season was gingerbread so hopefully I can try that out before it's gone. read more

Living in NYC and having visited Italy multiple times I've had no shortage of good gelato and strawberry fields manages to provide quality gelato, especially for the area. There are quite a few rotating flavors but my favorite has been their: STRACCIATELLA - for those unfamiliar, it is a very popular and standard gelato flavor made with a milk base with shavings of chocolate. Good sign that this place sells this flavor as far as authenticity goes. Here, it's creamy, sweet but not too sweet (thank god) and so smooth like good gelato tends to be. TIRAMISU Not sure if this is a rotating flavor but I got a pint of this and it was so good - creamy, with bold espresso flavor, nuttiness, milky and 100% tastes like tiramisu. Also sell pints for takeout! My friends and I regularly visited this spot during our 5 years in Norfolk. You can sample flavors before committing to them. read more

I came for the first time with my son and I tried a couple of flavors that were really good. Customer service wasn't the greatest but the gelato was nice and creamy, full of flavor. I got a waffle cone with two scoops but for the price I only two kid sized scoops that barely came to the fold of the waffle cone. I had more cone than ice cream. Extremely popular, just a small storefront with delicious gelato and sorbet, and both standard flavors and unique flavors like lavender, cantaloupe, pistachio ... the flavors rotate, they make it fresh in-house daily, so what they have today they may not have tomorrow except for some of the standards. They also have smoothies and pints to go. It's too small for seating indoors but just outside there are a couple of tables you can sit at. It's very difficult to walk by and not get at least a small cup and you can even get two flavors in any size cup. A locals favorite. read more

This place is probably one of my favorite ice cream shops period. I love that they have unique flavors like, "early grey," if you are feeling adventurous but also some solid classics like cookies and cream and chocolate. The cups are tiny but the ice cream is so rich and creamy that you are satisfied. You can get two flavors in the same cup so mix and match! If you are looking for something lighter they alway have sorbet/fruit options. My only gripe is that every time I have come here they usually only have one person working there so if someone orders a milkshake it kind hold up the line for a while...especially if the party ahead of you ordered two milkshakes.I went here on a wet and cold rainy evening and there was a healthy line so I can't imagine what it's like on a nice day. After hearing how incredible Strawberry Fields gelato is I put them on a try list that spanned over several years. What in the world took me so long. The location is heart of Ghent on Colley. Street parking is free and two hours permitted. The walk up clear of debris. A table for two greets you. Just around the corner is a kind of booth that seats up to 10. The shop is tiny, I think there was only one table. The case with around a dozen flavors of gelato displayed nicely in a refrigerated glass case. A young lady helped my son and wife get samples. After they weighed in i too got a sample of the Oatmeal Cream Pie. It was love a first taste. The scratch gelato shop makes everything in-house in their small on site kitchen. Do you know it's fresh everyday. The flavors change day to day. My son got chocolate and my wife strawberry cheesecake. We all agreed it was some of the best gelato we've ever tasted. There are two cup sizes and you can also get a cone. They also have a selection of smoothies and juice. Checkout efficient and friendly. You will need to fork out a few bucks for the quality concoction. Two large and one small rang up at north of $17 with tax. This sweet gem in Norfolk deserves the accolades and awards it has received over the years. read more

After four and a half years since my original review, Strawberry Fields is well overdue for an update. Due to the current pandemic, my local downtown YMCA is closed at this time. As a result, I have been resuming my old walking routine in the Ghent area for exercise, leading me straight to Strawberry Fields at their Colley Avenue storefront. They are now providing outdoor curbside service during the pandemic, and this is how we have reconnected. Under the ownership of Heather Wynn, they are now approaching their 8th anniversary after opening during the Memorial Day weekend of 2012. She is still the owner, and I had a nice chat with her during my last visit. Their specialty is gelato, which has been described as an old-fashioned Italian style ice cream. A major difference is that gelato is made with whole milk instead of heavy cream, with about half the fat and a third of the calories as regular ice cream. Their gelato is made from scratch in small batches with all natural ingredients and farm fresh milk. Their gelato is slow-churned, allowing less air to seep in. The result has been a deeper, richer, and more intense flavor than regular ice cream, along with a denser and thicker texture that is slower to melt and drip. Gelato is meant to be eaten slowly as you savor every bite. To quote a previous menu, their gelato is "less about the fat and more about the flavor." They offer a dozen flavors daily, which are currently available in heaping 6-ounce servings in 4-ounce cups and pint size containers that are also available for delivery in selected close-by neighborhoods. Every time I approach their storefront, I always see at least one new flavor on their chalkboard menu. There are also at least one or two vegan non-dairy flavors as well. When I asked how many flavors they have served over the years, I was told "at least a hundred." Every flavor I have tried so far has been excellent. Some I have enjoyed a little more than others. Most of them have given my taste buds a slam dunk 5-star flavor experience, with none of them scoring below 4-stars. I have been ordering their 4-ounce cups during each of my recent visits. There are benches at the side of the building, where I like to sit and enjoy them slowly. My 5-star selections to date are described below: MINT CHIP: This one is my favorite so far, and I've enjoyed it twice. It is made with fresh mint leaves soaked in whole milk. Fresh spinach juice is added to provide its pale green color and a deeper flavor profile. Its chocolate slivers are provided by Valrhona, a premium French chocolate manufacturer. To my delight, the largest slivers have been buried toward the bottom. STRACCIATELLA: This is one of the original gelato flavors and one that I have seen on their chalkboard menu during each visit. It is an Italian version of chocolate chip ice cream that first originated in the city of Bergamo in northern Italy in 1961. It was profoundly delicious. FRENCH CHOCOLATE: This is another classic flavor I have seen on their chalkboard menu during each visit. Made with Valrhona pure French cocoa, I have never enjoyed a deeper and more delicious version of chocolate ice cream. MASCARPONE NUTELLA: Mascarpone is an Italian coagulated cream cheese. Nutella is an Italian brand of sweetened hazelnut cocoa spread. The flavor combination was incredibly rich and delicious. BERRY COBBLER: This one is made from a base of strawberries and blueberries, mixed in with a crunchy salted oat crumble that provided a nice contrast of texture. The flavor combination was divine. RASPBERRY HIBISCUS: This was one of their non-dairy vegan offerings. It provided a light and delicious taste experience, and the flavors paired together beautifully. HERB GARDEN: This one was made with a unique and flavorful combination of rosemary, basil, and mint. The flavors combined together with symphony. SALTED CARAMEL CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE: The salted caramel was intensely flavorful and combined exquisitely with the chocolate chip cookie base. BLACKBERRY CREAM: This one was enjoyed before the pandemic about two years ago with its photo taken indoors. I remember it as being profoundly delicious. If I could make one suggestion, it would be to find a way to add an Ube flavor to their repertoire. An Ube gelato would send me to a state of absolute bliss. On a couple of side notes, their smoothies are not being offered during the pandemic period. Their acai bowls have also been discontinued. I am so very glad that I have rediscovered this gem of gelato goodness in the Ghent section of Norfolk. I have become a regular customer once again. read more

Cute gelato stand with two outdoor seating areas. I went in 50ºF weather, so there wasn't a line. Hot take: I like eating ice cream in colder weather, because it won't melt while I'm eating it. There was a good selection of flavors. I settled on a kids banana oreo gelato cup as a little treat. It was very banana-y and velvety. Staff was friendly. They have lids available, so you can take your gelato to have for later. They have a cute Instagram backdrop adjacent to the shop, so you can get a cool picture outside. We ordered the fruity pebbles gelato which literally is crushed up fruity pebbles. It was yummy and both girls finished it completely. We also tried the raspberry limeade gelato which was just ok.
