We were down in Williamsburg for a short family vacation and all the family sit-down restaurants on the main drag had a 30+ minute wait for a table. We saw a good number of cars but several open tables at Cook Out and decided to drop in. The menu is overwhelming at first, but once you realize that everything you want is included with the Cook Out Tray Special, the only thing you need to decide upon are the sides. And with the Tray, you get TWO! Fries AND onion rings. Chicken nuggets AND cole slaw! Hush puppies AND chili! And Cook Out is the only place I know that offers a corn dog or a chicken wrap as a side! And the prices were surprisingly affordable, given their opportunity to gouge tourists who are just passing through. You can upgrade your tray with a homemade shake, and you'll still get change for a $10 spot (and I'm talking paper bills, not pocket coins!). Count me as a fan -- I just wish they would expand further north! read more

Cookout is usually THE place to go for that incredible 40 different flavors of infamous milkshakes. Today, I went to the Richmond road location in Williamsburg. I wanted a peach milkshake and seasoned fries ( cajun seasoning) on the side. We asked to repeat order BEFORE pulling up to the pay/ carryout window. My sister ordered onion rings. Fries were hot. Cajun on side as requested. She received fries ALTHOUGH she specially asked for onion rings. The receipt ticket Does say fries. Returned fries, received onion rings. I waited to let the milkshake thaw out a little. First slip CLEARLY IT is NOT peach. It is health upon glancing on receipt. I go back to window to return milkshake and I told them I asked for peach not health. He informed me they do not have peach. What?! So you KNEW YOU DIDN'T have peach but you gave me something else like I wouldn't notice the difference. Thank goodness I Do not have a nut allergy that mishap or intentionally given could have been a different outcome. I received my money back. This was MY IDEA to stop at cookout. Smh. Well, I am not a fast food person. I try my best to stay away. But, we heard good things about this place and we were traveling. So, we gave it a shot. I was pleasantly surprised! First of all, we spent only $17.00 for a family of 5! Wow! The burgers are the way to go. They were very good for a fast food chain. The fries were hot, fresh, and yummy. My youngest got a hot dog and it was just average. BBQ was average. I am from Memphis, so I am picky about my BBQ. According to others it is pretty good. Where they shine is the burgers, fries, and shakes. We got one shake to share. It was the cookies and cream. It was very good! The place was busy, yet they kept it flowing and it was clean. I'm giving them four stars because I want them to stay open. However, our most-recent experience was not good. We love to get their peanut butter milkshakes. We paid for several of them, and every single one of them was basically just ice cream in a cup. It took well over an 2 hours to get to where we could even take a sip out of a straw. Obviously they need to add more milk to their milkshakes or it's really just ice cream in a cup. They did have a nice peanut butter flavor, once they were drinkable, hours later, and there was a big blob of peanut butter in the bottom of one of the cups, but I didn't want peanut butter ice cream, I wanted a peanut butter milkshake. I'm sure they save money or time or whatever by not adding enough liquids, but that's my review for you. I do love that they have cheer wine on tap, I love every single one of their foods and they are super affordable. I hope they fix the milkshake issue. read more

I don't typically review fast food places, unless they're really bad or really good... this place was really good! We've seen these restaurants for years down in NC, but none really in areas when we were able to stop in and today, when we had the opportunity to stop in, we did! The young girl who took our order was very patient and explained the menu as well as how fresh everything is and how they cook it. We ordered a few things from the basic, small burger to a chili dog and a bigger burger, with fries and drinks it came out to only $12! Whatta Bargain! The food was tasty! I went here twice in one day, it's that good! Visiting the area I wanted to try places that's unique to the area, and a friend recommended cookout. Walked in not expecting much but looking at the menu the prices we're already looking really nice. The combo meal (I forget the exact name) is a great deal. The first time I had a hamburger with one of the special styles they offer, second time I had the cajun chicken sandwich - both were very good. The milkshakes however are on a whole other level of awesome! It's not some crappy milkshake like you often find, this is a true milkshake! Best milkshake i've ever had, it was so good! Wow!!! Walked in and couldn't believe how cheap it was. Almost left but glad we didn't. For less than 25 bucks we ate, 2 kids, 2 adults and we even got milkshakes. My wife and I stopped for lunch this week while on vacation and checked out this new to us Hamburger chain. We were both happy with the quality of the food we received, the promptness of service, and the value we received for the money. I had a double burger, fries, and my wife had a single burger, hush puppies, and onion rings. We were both happy with our selections. Both of us had milk shakes and although the milk shakes were too thick to drink until our meal was nearly done, the flavor of the shakes was very good as well. Good food for a good price! I got two chicken wraps (cajun and ranch), and both were outstanding. I almost felt like there was something wrong with the price being so low, but nope-they were excellent. My hubby got two hot dogs and a quesadilla. My only slight weirdness was in the menu. It was kind of hard to read. They had a sign out front telling you to pick from a variety of things, and what the side options are. I guess I am just trained that sides are fries, coleslaw, veggies, etc. Here, they do quesadillas and chicken wraps as well. So it was a little overwhelming to pick, especially when there was a line of people behind us. We don't have one of these local to us, but if I am ever in the area again, I'd certainly patronize it once more. read more

My friend and I had Cook Out for the first time yesterday. Since we are from out of state and they don't have any around us, we wanted to try something new. We were impressed -- you get a lot of food for a good price. The charbroiled burgers actually taste like they've been grilled fresh, unlike other fast food spots. The menu is unique and there are about 40 flavors for milkshakes so there's something for everyone. Cookout is an institution of cheap, relatively tasty food that is a staple every time I visit the area. What more could a working fella want? 5 bucks will get you a platter enough to fill you, worth your dollar bite-for-bite even more than much larger fast food chains. There is nothing at cookout to die for, but its mostly pretty. Decent. You can go wrong here, sadly, but my local friends are a good help for steering in the right direction. The quesadillas are good, corn dogs are good, watch out for their bbq however. I prefer to get hushpuppies over fries when i come here for the rarity of the experience, but the fries arent bad. For burgers, aim for Cookout Style or the chili one. The centerpiece of any meal at cookout, however, is their Cheerwine float, which is beautiful in its simplicity- ice cream scoop in cup, pour cheerwine over top. The soda machines have Cheerwine as well, so the float only runs out when the ice cream runs out. Whats not to love about that!? Cheap, cheap, cheap food, and mostly decent to boot. You can feed a whole family here for the cost of one plate at some places. And remember what i wrote about that float! read more

We remembered the cook out when it was just dual drive ups and they had an actual grill inside. Today's visit was to a well established fast food restaurant. There was nothing vegetarian friendly on the menu but fries and hush puppies. The hush puppies were as expected. They were nice and sweet. The fries on the other hand were less than desirable. While I munched on those my family had burgers and super thick milk shakes. From what I was told, none of the 3 people in my party enjoyed their burger. Their comments were that it was dry with no flavor. My husband and 16yr old both said it was better than McDonald's but no where near as good as Five Guys or Shake Shack! This place has it all for not a lot of money. It's such a great place to snack. I come here each time I come to Williamsburg. I usually get the grilled chicken sandwich, so good! The interior is super cute with a really rustic feel. Everything's wood, they serve Cheerwine and sweet tea, and I can't even tell you how many milkshakes they have. Oh my gosh...where do I begin? The only reason we came here was because of the good reviews I saw on Yelp, and the place we wanted to go to across the street had a 30 minute wait. Everything about this place bothers me. From the cheap small servings to the fact that they use styrofoam containers and cups. The only good thing I can find about this place is that my son liked his milkshake, and yes it is too thick to drink (get a spoon). I hate to say it, but if you want fast food there are plenty of national chains near this place that serves better quality and stopped using styrofoam containers over 20 years ago. read more

We went to Cook Out for a quick, low-cost meal tonight. This is the first time eating at Cook Out and it will most likely be our last. The restaurant was clean and the music played in the dining area was good. However, the fries were very soggy and the onion rings tasted and had the consistency of being made a long time (hours) before being served. The cook out style hot dog had very little slaw and the taste was just average. The regular burger ($2.99) was only slightly bigger than the small ($1.69) and definitely wasn't worth the extra cost. Half of our burgers - we ordered two regulars and two smalls - were made with the wrong toppings. The taste of the burgers was better than say McDonald's, but not better than Wendy's. Lastly, the order ready announcements in the dining area are loud - as in hurt your ears loud. read more

When I first heard about this place, I was pissed that a) I hadn't heard of it before, and b) that there weren't any locations *right* near me (this chain is scattered only throughout the South & Deep South). I was SO pumped opening that burger wrapper, you guys. I took a bite, and: mmmm! Now, I have to be real with you--Cook Out did NOT live up to my expectations. (!) I KNOW. It's AWFUL, and I'm SORRY. :( It just didn't seem worth all the hype. Still a great burger, complete with legit char. Very much like a burger you would find at a, well, cookout ;) But it just didn't knock my socks off the way I thought it would. The hush pups had a nice onion-y flavor, and the fries were good too (nothing special, but good). The chocolate chip mint shake was good, nice and minty without being overwhelming. I say that, because I've had "mint" shakes from other fast-food places which literally tasted like Scope, lol... But that shake was good. Big portion as well... Which brings me to my next point.
