two trucks parked in front of a restaurant

After arriving in Charlotte and driving to Winston-Salem we continued to see signs for Cookout. Especially signs that said how many different fresh milkshakes they have. We have never been to North Carolina and had never heard of Cookout. We felt we had to try it while in the area and did a little research on the company. We discovered they originated in 1989 in Greensboro, NC. They focus on flame grilled burgers, chicken, hot dogs and milkshakes. They now have about 300 locations in about 12 Southeast states from MD to GA to MS. They are known for having a dual drive through format. We had an opportunity to stop here a little before noon on a Saturday. Because we had two people in the car, we decided to enter the drive through side where they hand you your food from the passenger window. We ordered from the menu on the drivers side, paid and picked up our order from the passenger side. We ordered an Out West Style Burger (which includes BBQ Sauce, Bacon, Mayo, Pickles & Onion) and White Cheddar Cheese Bites. We proceeded to the pick up window where we paid, were handed our food and we were on our way. We were really impressed with the burger. It appeared that it was actually hand pressed and it tasted like it came from a charcoal grill. The cheese bites were also really tasty. For us this was a pretty cool experience to find a new different fast food restaurant.

Good fast food. Drive through was fast for a Wednesday night and service was pleasing.

The circle on top shows the food not all the way cooked and the bottom circle clearly shows they gray hair inside my food

There was a gray hair in my food and my chicken wasn't even all the way cooked, will never be going back

Quick, efficient service with good food. I ordered six milkshakes and was on my way in about five minutes.

It's not bad by fast food standards but it's never really wowed me, and every place I've been to has always been a super long wait. Unfortunately this one wasn't much better and once again I was waiting a reaaallly long time for my "fast" food. It was a little busy when I got there on a weekday evening, but even considering I was still waiting an awkwardly long time. The manager there seemed to be keeping a good handle on things at least and was professional and polite, so kudos for that. If I really wanted Whataburger for some reason I'd come back here but only if I was ready for a long wait.

The teenage order taker came out from the kitchen area and just looked at me. I finally said "hey, how are you doing". He didn't really respond so I just placed my order. To say he was disinterested is being kind. I got my napkins and filled my drink. The condiment section was lacking salt, so I just went to my table. When the food was brought to me, the employee offered me two kinds of ketchup. Her tray did not have any salt on it either, so I had to ask her to bring some, which she did. Very perfunctory. The burger and fries were just barely warm. The fries tasted fine, but we're nothing to get excited about. The burger patties were thin, dry, and insipid. The toppings were just average. Again, the burger was on the wrong side of warm and did not taste fresh at all. There's just not much positive to say about my experience here this evening. WHATABURGER? Try WHATADISAPPOINTMENT.

I ordered the…read morechicken quesadilla and loved how many topping options there were to customize it exactly how I wanted. It also came with chips and salsa, which was a nice bonus. My friend made her own salad and really enjoyed it too. The food tasted fresh, the atmosphere was fun, and the restaurant was clean. The staff were also super friendly and welcoming. Definitely a solid 8/10 spot if you're looking for "build your own" options, tacos, quesadillas, or burritos.

Sometimes I'm in the mood for tacos. Last week I figured I'd give them a try & so glad I did! It's always a plus to see a high sanitation rating! The ambiance is festive & clean, even around the soda machines. The counter service was great. The team member was knowledgeable, helpful & patient. I mentioned that I was a first-timer. There's a large selection of great toppings to choose from. Fulfillment is quick & the staff is pleasant at handoff. The food is always nicely packaged & travels well - it's also good to ask what does. My tacos were filled with veggies that came with a free side, along with chips & salsa! My to-go box was topped off with some of the best light & crispy chips - even better when salted & warm (I found the salt factor to be hit or miss on orders). Side note, while some competitors give you a dab of queso, Taco Mama doesn't skimp. I've eating here several times before posting, and it's consistent. Hopefully, they'll continue to keep up the quality food & service. Oh, I should point out that my bill only included the meal & tax. You don't have to worry about the dreaded, dare I say illegal, cc service charge that some establishments are passing onto their customers.

The reasons are it is often crowded and ordering becomes a hassle in their drive-thru, the chicken sandwich is the smallest of all chains, and I prefer the sandwiches at KFC, Popeye's, Bo Jangles, and even Church's, and Culver's has a nice sandwich. Since Popeyes threw down the gauntlet in Aug 2019 with the introduction of their now famous chicken sandwich, all the national and regional chains now offer their version, as do many local restaurants - check out the BYO at Bad Daddy's, the hot chicken at Bossy Beulah's, the fried chicken at Alex's in Lewisville, and there are even more! I know Chick-fil-A is still very popular, the drive-thru lines attest to that, but CFA has slipped in the national popularity area, usually listed as definitely behind Popeye's & KFC, and being pressured by Raisin' Caine's and perhaps others. I popped in here because it was off prime time, customer traffic was light, and I was a bit hungry. I ordered the Spicy Deluxe and it was quickly out. This is a decent sandwich, and I enjoyed it, but it in no way changes my view about which chicken sandwiches I prefer.

Today I got the Mac & cheese, one thing I like about their Mac and cheese is that they always make sure you have a clump of that chewy cheese from the top of the pan The only downside I have found to this location is that the area traffic can make it a little difficult to get in and out, depending on the time of day. I do tend to avoid it when Sam's Club/Hanes Mall Blvd. is busy, for that reason, but that's not the restaurant's fault.
