two trucks parked in front of a restaurant

After arriving in Charlotte and driving to Winston-Salem we continued to see signs for Cookout. Especially signs that said how many different fresh milkshakes they have. We have never been to North Carolina and had never heard of Cookout. We felt we had to try it while in the area and did a little research on the company. We discovered they originated in 1989 in Greensboro, NC. They focus on flame grilled burgers, chicken, hot dogs and milkshakes. They now have about 300 locations in about 12 Southeast states from MD to GA to MS. They are known for having a dual drive through format. We had an opportunity to stop here a little before noon on a Saturday. Because we had two people in the car, we decided to enter the drive through side where they hand you your food from the passenger window. We ordered from the menu on the drivers side, paid and picked up our order from the passenger side. We ordered an Out West Style Burger (which includes BBQ Sauce, Bacon, Mayo, Pickles & Onion) and White Cheddar Cheese Bites. We proceeded to the pick up window where we paid, were handed our food and we were on our way. We were really impressed with the burger. It appeared that it was actually hand pressed and it tasted like it came from a charcoal grill. The cheese bites were also really tasty. For us this was a pretty cool experience to find a new different fast food restaurant.

Good fast food. Drive through was fast for a Wednesday night and service was pleasing.

The circle on top shows the food not all the way cooked and the bottom circle clearly shows they gray hair inside my food

There was a gray hair in my food and my chicken wasn't even all the way cooked, will never be going back

Quick, efficient service with good food. I ordered six milkshakes and was on my way in about five minutes.

Over five years ago, I gave Joe's a chance, only to come away unimpressed. Five years is enough…read moretime to let the disappointment fade and to give them a fresh chance, right? As the name suggests, this is still an operation focused on takeaway dining, though there are some tables available on the sidewalk outside. I'd end up taking my food home on this trip though. Once again I decided to sample the Chicago-style hot dogs offered here. And there have been improvements since my first visit. The product now comes on an actual poppy seed bun, as it should. I don't think the bun was steamed though and that hurts the texture. The hot dog itself had a good snap and taste, and the through-the-garden toppings were loaded well onto the bun. Something's still missing about the overall taste though, as these simply don't measure up to other Chicago-style hot dogs I've had -- including many far away from Chicago. The build of the sandwich looks closer to being correct than it did five years ago, but the flavors are still wrong, and I wish they'd work to figure out what it is they're missing. I placed my order on site rather than calling it in, and the young lady at the counter was pleasant. It took a little longer than I'd expected for the kitchen to prepare my order; maybe they just don't get many requests for the Windy City dog and they're just not well versed in putting it together? This latest experience leaves me scoring Joe's somewhere between two and three stars, and though the food was better than last time I still lean towards the lower side of that range. Maybe their more Carolina-themed food would be better and result in a higher rating, but there are already plenty of places I can go locally for a hot dog fixed "our way," many of which would be at a more competitive price point and with better options for drinks and seating. I wanted to try Joe's because of the hot dog options they have that aren't widely represented elsewhere in this area, and in those respects I still can't find much to love here.

The only difficult task when getting food from Joe's Take-out is deciding what to order. The Beef…read moreBrisket (platter or sandwich) is as good as any in the area , and far better than most. It is flavorful and tender, and the sauce takes it over the top. There burgers are first rate (go for the Smash Burger), as are the hot dogs, no matter how you top them off. I especially like the Chili Dog with mustard and onion, the Chicago style dog, and a simple dog with mustard and kraut! The Ribs are very nice, tender and loaded with flavor. There are plenty of tasty sides, and I love the Street Corn, the Collards, the Fried Okra, and Mac & Cheese. Joe's is the type of locally owned restaurant that I love to support. The food and service are first rate. Because it has little street visibility, it's location, is small with no inside seating, and is take out, a number of folks will never give this place a visit, and that's a shame. The burger here is as good as those at Alex's, Bobo's, Mr BBQ, and Dairi-o. The hot dogs are as good as those at Dairi-o, Mr BBQ, and Kermit's, and very close to those at PB's. The Beef Brisket is as good as any in the area, and far better than the vast majority. I highly recommend and hope you will visit.

Great big parking lot and plenty of seating and a little patio. Looked like a good meet up lunch or workers eating while we were here. Great menu with so many choices and daily specials. Definitely something for everyone. My friend ordered an iced tea and they refilled happily. I went with the chicken gyro, which essentially is a Souvlaki. Grilled chicken , fresh veggies, tzatziki on a grilled pita. Lots of filling and I got the house made chips . They don't give a side with sandwiches, looks like they are all à la carte. $1.50 wasnt a bad price though. Loved my pita I would only suggest maybe they grill the onions and instead of fresh. Loved the chips as they were dry and not oily . Served with ranch. My friend ordered the walnut chicken salad sandwich. Then realized when she got it it's full of onions which she could not eat. She felt bad for having not asked when she ordered it. Our server was so nice to see if they could trade it out and they did with zero fuss. It making her feel bad. She opted for the cheese burger. Which she loved and came out looking great. Very fresh with all the trimmings in a nice big bun. She said she's definitely get that again. Pay at the counter and I was pleased it wasn't a lunch that cost more than $15. With tip. Great spot and shame on me for but coming here earlier! Definitely added to my lunch rotation.

I ended up having a pizza night which was about $7 for the smaller option which was about 4 slices and $9 for the bigger option which was about 8 slices. The Pizza's were yummy with crispy crusts which is how i like them. Would definitely come again and see what else their menu offers. If you're nearby and looking for something Johnny B's has a lot of good options with prices you can't beat.

Like seriously, no other burger has been able to touch the flavor bomb in my mouth that I get at Barcelona. You order at the counter, they give you a number, and bring your food to your table. Everyone at the front counter is always cheery and welcoming and the wait for food is never long maybe five minutes. everything is fresh made right when you order it. the sweet potato fries are absolutely delicious. It's a low-key casual spot that has a beautiful outdoor seating in the back. Beautiful as in, very simplistic tables and chairs, but in a cute little garden like area that has sun shining in and plants. it's a cute little feel. Now these burgers, are delicious. We've only gotten the Barcelona burger and not tried other options because that one is so freaking good. The single has even more flavor than the double somehow because on the single patty, you can taste all of the additions: the Barcelona sauce, the tomato, the lettuce, and all of the flavors just explode. Their meat is tender. It's a thin patty and it's just delicious. If you're looking for a good, simple burger that's packed with flavor and you aren't looking for a gigantic hunk of meat, This is your spot. They do offer beer and bottled drinks and they also have desserts on site.
