Tonight was my first trip to Taco Mama. My friends had been there before tonight night we were having a birthday dinner. Really enjoyed it and the servers and staff were all very helpful and very prompt. Ordered the chicken quesadilla with a side of macaroni and cheese and I really liked it. We have plenty of eateries in W-S offering Mexican cuisine or Mexican-influnced foods, and I think that contributed to my reluctance to visit Taco Mama until recently. While not all of our local options are great, we have a reasonably large number of options that are good enough to make them regular stops for me. Taco Mama is not going to be on that list, I'm afraid, based on my experience thus far. The facility itself seems fine, though the ambient noise level was rather loud (likely influenced by all the metal and concrete). But the food, the feel, the service and the value just don't compete well with all those other places we have to choose from. The unhelpful attitude of the clerk taking my order didn't start things out well; she seemed genuinely annoyed about being there, and that attitude carried over into her tone when answering my questions or prompting me for info she needed. Also on the service side of things, I had to stop the waitress from throwing away my food -- a plate over half full -- after I'd walked not more than ten steps away to refill my drink. [She apologized, but only after I had to confront her twice; still don't understand why "don't throw that away!" could have been confusing.] The burrito and beans I ordered were edible, but so bland that I might as well have been eating packing materials. The accompanying chips were warm, but the cup of salsa was quite possibly the least appealing salsa I've ever been served in a restaurant. I've had Taco Bell food I've enjoyed more than this. And yet I had forked over almost $20 for such a disappointment. Maybe it was an off-day. Maybe the tacos are the way to go here instead. But I don't think they offered even a hint of a reason for me to try Taco Mama again any time soon. read more

They definitely have a system that's working for them. For some unbeknownst reason, I hadn't tried this place before; although, I've patronized all surrounding spots. Sometimes I'm in the mood for tacos. Last week I figured I'd give them a try & so glad I did! It's always a plus to see a high sanitation rating! The ambiance is festive & clean, even around the soda machines.The counter service was great. The team member was knowledgeable, helpful & patient. I mentioned that I was a first-timer. There's a large selection of great toppings to choose from. Fulfillment is quick & the staff is pleasant at handoff. The food is always nicely packaged & travels well - it's also good to ask what does. My tacos were filled with veggies that came with a free side, along with chips & salsa! My to-go box was topped off with some of the best light & crispy chips - even better when salted & warm (I found the salt factor to be hit or miss on orders). Side note, while some competitors give you a dab of queso, Taco Mama doesn't skimp. I've eating here several times before posting, and it's consistent. Hopefully, they'll continue to keep up the quality food & service. Oh, I should point out that my bill only included the meal & tax. You don't have to worry about the dreaded, dare I say illegal, cc service charge that some establishments are passing onto their customers. read more

It was National Margarita Day and my husband was craving margaritas. After stopping by a cafe, we noticed Taco Mama next door. Instead of searching for another restaurant, we decided to give it a try. Everything on the menu sounded good. They offer unlimited free toppings so you can literally pile on as much as you want. We both ordered the Taco Basket which comes with two tacos and you can mix and match. I chose The Sizzler and The Mayor with roasted corn and black bean toppings. My husband chose The Sizzler and Cheezy Beef. Our food came out fairly quickly but we soon realized why. Everything on our tacos was cold and the meats were only lukewarm. I'm guessing they precook everything and don't keep it heated. The roasted corn tasted like it had just come out of the fridge. The meats were nicely seasoned but that was about it. They were supposed to be topped with sauces but we couldn't really taste any. The soft shells were also too soft and soggy. I couldn't even hold my tacos without them falling apart so I had to eat them with a fork. I ordered the Blood Orange Margarita but it was very sour. I could only finish about half of it. The line kept getting longer while we were eating so they're clearly popular. Still, I felt like there's room for improvement. read more

I ate lunch at Taco Mama in Winston-Salem on Saturday and was really impressed. I ordered the chicken quesadilla and loved how many topping options there were to customize it exactly how I wanted. It also came with chips and salsa, which was a nice bonus. My friend made her own salad and really enjoyed it too. The food tasted fresh, the atmosphere was fun, and the restaurant was clean. We arrived around 12:50pm on a Friday, and the place sure is popular!! They were clearing tables as fast as they could to support folks coming in the door. Still love this spot! Go to spot for us for Mexican, always tastes fresh and portions are much larger than most other places. Do feel like prices have increased a bit since a few years ago but that's expected. Quality has remained the same though!! Everyone there is always so helpful and patient when ordering and love the feel inside. Review of the Happy Family Meal -- I needed to feed 4 ppl on very short notice so I decided to try this meal deal. Ordering online was easy, dedicated spot at pick up so no waiting, friendly service, and the food was being packed up fresh on arrival. Very pleased overall with ease, convenience, amount, and quality. The salsas were better than I expected and i appreciated everything being packed up so well. Warning- Their chips are addictive! I'm typically all about an authentic local taco place, but I made an exception and it was a good experience. Taco mama has a fun casual ambiance, consistent service and is a great option for a more Americanized taco/burrito spot. They also serve beer and an assorted variety of margaritas. Lots of variety, some welcoming decor and fast service added to the first visit here for me. The create your own entrees is appealing and allows lots of customization to fit your own specific tastes. I decided on tacos (after the establishment namesake) and went with fried flounder and barbacoa. Both were decently filling (I typically can eat multiple of whatever choice at most Mexican related dishes) and I was content with two along with the free chips and the side included (I got Mexican street corn). If you're looking for a great quality Mexican alternative to the likes of Chipotle and Moe's this is a solid choice. Lots more to choose from and likely fresher made to order. Always been a Taco Mama fan. I love that you can go in there and absolutely throw the house at anything you order toppings wise, and you don't get charged extra for any of it. In an era where surcharges are running overly rampant, I appreciate the streamlined experience of pick your protein, pick the form you want it in, and that's what you pay. For me, Taco Mama is at their best doing loaded nachos. Their bevy of toppings just lend themselves to you building the nachos of your dreams, and the resulting stack they bring out to you is always eye-catching, never disappointing. At this Taco Mama in Winston, they do a good job of layering some of your toppings so no chip goes barren. They'll even give you more queso or salsas on the side for dipping if you want. This was given to me without prompting! My favorites for protein are their carne asada, standard taco meat, or their shrimp. The queso is some of the best tasting around, and I like their thinner but crunch chip style. Very solid local spot for some Mexican food. I've been twice now and I got the big client the first time and the judge the second time. I thought the big client was much better. The beef was super tender, the cheese melty, queso had good texture, and the burrito held its shape. The judge did not have as much flavor nor did it hold its shape from the second I grabbed it. This is a no table service spot with a varied menu of Mexican fast food items, featuring tacos, of course! The place is located in the sprawling, twisting shopping center that is anchored by Academy Sports. Like so many newer restaurants this is of the fast casual mode, meaning no table service, so queue up & order up. The service here was pleasant, efficient, and knowledgeable - order quickly taken, quickly filled. I ordered the Mama's Chorizo Tacos (2 of them), with Salas & Chips, and their version of Street Corn - $12 may be a bit high even taking into consideration the sides. I ordered 1 hard taco and 2 soft tacos, both of which were nicely filled with fresh ground chorizo, pico de gallo, lettuce, and queso fresco. These were pretty good tacos, in an old school kind of way. The salsa was very nice, chunky with a nice heat level. The street corn was much different from most - the kernels of corn were loose in a small plastic cup with cheese and cilantro on top. The taste was ok but there was none of the smokiness that comes from the whole cob being grilled. The service was excellent, the interior clean and bright, the mode is modern and functional - not a place to linger in comfort! They have margaritas! I love their margaritas. The margaritas are reasonably priced and they offer many different flavor of margaritas with a few seasonal flavors. They also have some beer and wine options. All of the staff were kind and courteous. if you needed anything or had a question then they quickly helped. The inside was clean. They have a good amount of seating inside and few tables outside. You can build your own tacos, burrito, burrito bowl, and nachos. They also have quesadillas as well. There are also tons of toppings that you can add for free. You get good portions. I did the mix and match tacos. You choose 2 tacos and it comes with chips and salsa, plus a side. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars only because the cilantro lime rice had hard/dried out pieces of rice in it, as if that batch of rice had been sitting out for a while. read more

I highly recommend the Chipotle bbq sauce on...literally anything. The portions were generous, a good value for the price. My mom got the build your own salad with shrimp - also delightful. Shrimp was perfectly cooked and the cilantro lime dressing she got with it was so so good. Free chips and salsa come with most meals - and the chips are great! They are thin, crispy and well salted. But they aren't TOO thin - they can hold salsa. A quality chip! The toppings you can get on your 'build your own items' are awesome - everything you'd expect plus things like Guac or queso - but they don't up-charge you. All toppings are included in the flat price. The general vibe is laid back - you order at the counter and get a number for food to be brought out. The place was clean and there were staff coming around to clear our table and check if we needed anything. Didn't try the margaritas, but I will next time. I love Taco Mama! First and foremost the portions here are elite. Just glancing at the menu, you'll think it's much pricier than Chipotle, but it's oh so much more. First and foremost, you can get all the toppings you want - including queso, guacamole and avocado! I usually opt to build my own creation, whether it be a quesadilla, nachos or a bowl. Those are my 3 go to options. I will say, I am not the biggest fan of the chicken here- I know it's just a me thing. It's just a little plain for my taste. But the steak. Oh man is it good! Crispy edges, juicy and well seasoned. I really like their chorizo refried beans too. I like that with the quesadilla, you can add some components inside the quesadilla (I like to do rice, grilled onions, corn and cilantro) and also get additional toppings on the side at no extra cost. They have a plethora of sauces here to choose from and I really enjoy them. The chipotle ranch and the roasted poblano tartar are my favorite. I love alllll things taco and have tried Taco Mama in GSO a few times during COVID. We recently tried the location in WS and it left a bit to be desired. We go the pulled pork and tuna taco and both lacked a ton of flavor. The tortillas were bland, the toppings needed salt or a sauce and everything together missed the mark in terms of seasoning. We have been to the location in Greensboro but did not realize there was also a location in Winston until after we visited the Greensboro location. We really enjoyed our visit to the location in Greensboro and planned to visit here some time. Today we were on our way home and were trying to decide where to grab something to eat. My wife suggested we check out this Taco Mama and I thought that was a great idea. We arrived about 3pm on a Saturday and walked inside. They are located in the end unit of a smaller strip mall section of a larger shopping area. There is ample parking. This location is much smaller than the Greensboro location and while it has a similar feel, it didn't feel as warm and welcoming. There was a small line of people waiting to place their orders and we looked over the menu. Ultimately, we decided to order the same as we have in the past. A build your own salad and burrito. When we reached the counter we were greeted by a friendly young woman who expertly took our order and walked us through the extras as we built our own meals. We love the Taco Mama concept with the extras all being part of the menu item price. It is very reasonable! We took a seat and while we were waiting we saw several orders of nachos brought out from the kitchen. Wow-these nachos look epic! They are absolutely large enough for 2+people. The only downside for us is we like different toppings so we would be forced to order our own. My wife commented she would love a half order of nachos offered on the menu, but honestly the prices are reasonable so you wouldn't feel bad about spending the money on a full order. Our food arrived and looked delicious. Once again we really enjoyed our meals. The ingredients are fresh and delicious and their chips are thin and crunchy. Stopped for lunch not knowing what I wanted to order but I was hungry! A young lady greeted me nearly at the door offering me a printed menu and gave me instructions to take a seat to look over the menu and come back to order at the counter when I was ready. The menu was a lot! The girl that took my order at the counter was super friendly and helpful and helped me build a chicken bowl that was DELICIOUS! She was very kind, knowledgeable and very helpful! I then proceeded to get my own drink at the drink dispensing station and took a seat with my number to await my food. No sooner than I had settled in my food arrived. It was fresh and plentiful and delicious. My huge chicken bowl and tea was $17 Update: Visited again 3 weeks later everything was pretty much 4 stars this time - not nearly as delicious or plentiful!! I was not impressed in any way. The selection of tacos seemed at first to be interesting, but when we got the tacos the tortillas were cold and soggy. I ordered the Alabama Redneck and the Steak taco (can't remember the name, doesn't matter). I also got a side of slaw that was okay but just okay. The chips were good and the salsa was fine. The food was delicious. They got my order wrong - gave me flour not corn tortillas but I enjoyed it anyway. The food came quickly and the cashier was very nice. It's a strip mall environment lots of seating and TV's for October baseball. I thought it was a little higher priced than what I expected but there was a lot of chicken in my tacos and I was stuffed. One taco rice and beans is plenty but they give you two. Yummy! Will be back for sure. New to the area and added it to my favorites! read more
