I've been to a few Whataburgers, one in Amarillo, Texas, the other in High Point and this location in Winston. To be honest I've never been super impressed with Whataburger. It's not bad by fast food standards but it's never really wowed me, and every place I've been to has always been a super long wait. Unfortunately this one wasn't much better and once again I was waiting a reaaallly long time for my "fast" food. It was a little busy when I got there on a weekday evening, but even considering I was still waiting an awkwardly long time. The manager there seemed to be keeping a good handle on things at least and was professional and polite, so kudos for that. The name "WHATABURGER" implies that the burger is something special. It is not. My entire experience here is in line with the 2 star average rating. The teenage order taker came out from the kitchen area and just looked at me. I finally said "hey, how are you doing". He didn't really respond so I just placed my order. To say he was disinterested is being kind. I got my napkins and filled my drink. The condiment section was lacking salt, so I just went to my table. When the food was brought to me, the employee offered me two kinds of ketchup. Her tray did not have any salt on it either, so I had to ask her to bring some, which she did. Very perfunctory. The burger and fries were just barely warm. The fries tasted fine, but we're nothing to get excited about. The burger patties were thin, dry, and insipid. The toppings were just average. As a native Texan, I've had years of experience being able to enjoy Whataburger. Imagine my excitement to watch the new location go up on Stratford Road. (The address says Harvey Street). I decided to treat myself to lunch after an appointment several weeks ago. Their Whataburger Jr. is a perfect portion size for me. I ordered mine with fries and a Dr. Pepper. You can order the burger any way you want, since they are always made to order. Their default is American cheese, tomato, lettuce, diced onions, pickles, and mustard. However, they have many other options, including bacon, jalapeños, ketchup, and mayo. It was cold outside, so I went through the drive-through. I'm sorry to say it took a very long time to get my food - maybe 15 minutes? Everyone was friendly and apologetic, but they clearly had kinks to work out. I think they had opened only a week or so before my visit. My food was excellent, and, like Schwarzenegger, I'll be back. I took the time to leave feedback via the QR code on my receipt. I heard back from headquarters in less than 24 hours. The response was apologetic and empathetic. Today I heard from the operating partner (owner?) with further follow up. I am so impressed with the way they have handled my experience. In summary, the burgers are even better than I remembered. I've been eating at Whataburger since I was 6. The restaurant here in Winston is great in my opinion. I don't know why this place is getting so many low reviews. I've been to the new spot here in Winston several times since it's opening. My service has not always been the fastest but I don't expect a restaurant that makes each meal fresh to order to be as fast as places that put their burgers on a rack ahead of time. Ordering via the app always speeds up the process and the food still comes out hot. The place is always clean. There are lots of tables so I've never had to wait for one. Finally got around to trying Whataburger after waiting for the hype to die down since it's been so busy. To be honest, the burgers were good,but nothing too special. I'd say if you've never tried them, it's worth giving it a shot at least once. I did enjoy their fries and onion rings, and the customer service was very nice and friendly. What I didn't like, though, was how many flies were inside. For a place that's still pretty new, that's something they really need to address. I grew up in Texas, so I may be a bit biased, but I genuinely think that for the price, the classic double meat Whataburger is one of the best fast-food burgers outside of In-N-Out. They haven't shrunk the size like many other chains have to stay competitive, and I was very full just from the burger alone. This location, however, seems to be going through the typical "new store rush," and I'm curious to see how it settles over time. I took my son on a Friday evening around 5 p.m., and it was packed. The drive-thru was slow, both kiosks were out of order, and only one register was open. The staff was friendly but not moving with much urgency. When you visit places like Dario, In-N-Out, or Chick-fil-A, everything runs like a well-oiled machine. This was definitely not that kind of experience--at least not yet. So I came in with mindset that I'll compare it to In and out or Culvers ...it was just meh. Patty had no flavor but I liked how it was mustard forward. So now that this location is finally opened I decided to stop in. I went rather early before it got very busy. I knew what to expect but I went anyway! Just like the one in Greensboro and the other NC locations, this place will be swarmed, receiving near cult adoration. I have eaten the burgers offered by this Texas based chain for a number of years, in Texas of course. I also try a cheeseburger at the recently opened Greensboro location. The burgers, FF, and Fried Chicken Sandwich are decent ( most of the time), but fall short of the best choice among national chains, as well as far short of many local options. For a national option I would prefer Culver's or Freddy's, and my local choice would be Cook Out for both quality and value. Many will come, not all will be happy with the results! read more

My son and I stopped by the drive-through to get breakfast. We hit it at a great time and there was only one other car. We tried the honey butter, chicken biscuit, and breakfast on a bun sandwiches. I also tried their iced coffee. It took a little bit of time to get our food, but it was worth it because the sandwiches were really good. The biscuit was hot and fresh and really delicious. My son loved his sandwich. The iced coffee was not good and tasted just like water. I would come back for the breakfast sandwiches and other items but skip the coffee. WhatADisappointnent! After all they hype about this fast food chain coming to NC, we were ready for a good burger. Unfortunately, we didn't get to try one. We arrived at the Stratford Road location shortly after 1pm on Friday. The drive thru was still crowded so we decided to go inside. There were two order kiosks. One was out of order. After waiting for the current user to finish (seemed to be taking a long time) I began my order. Not being familiar with the menu, I expected it to take a bit longer. I quickly figured out why the previous customer had taken so long. The touch screen reaction took forever to respond. I struggled through it to place an order for two burger meals and drinks. Upon touching finish and pay nothing happened. Touched it again. After what seemed like an eternity and several touches, the machine says "need more time?". I touched NO and it dropped all of my order and went to the main screen. By then there were six or eight people in line, and I gave up! Sorry, there are good burgers elsewhere without the technological hassle. We left and went to Sonic! Sorry, Whataburger, you don't make the cut! I could understand if it was brand new technology, but come on, this company had hundreds of locations. You would think they would have the bugs out of the system by now. I finally found a time when this new addition to our local dining options wasn't overloaded by customers: Sunday morning. Morning hours might be perceived by some as an inappropriate time to order a burger and fries, but I'm not one to be restrained by societal norms in matters of hunger. The timing of my visit meant that I was able to park just outside the restaurant, which hasn't been possible in the facility's prime hours as these spots have been blocked by traffic cones, likely to facilitate drive-thru operations. As one would expect for a newly built location, the exterior and interior were clean and neat. But there were a surprising number of people inside, including a line at the counter, and so I went to an electronic kiosk to order. This became a problem, however, as the morning staff had forgotten to put a supply of table tents at each kiosk -- and because entering the tent number at the end of the ordering process is a necessity, I had to go through the ordering process a second time after I received a tent from the counter. I'm sure the demand and the newness of this operation led to delays, but it took quite a while to fill my order, a much slower approach than I've experienced at other Whataburger stores. My order was filled correctly, as I selected food items that are my traditional Whataburger selections: double meat with cheese and a variety of toppings (including grilled jalapenos and grilled onions) accompanied by fries. The burger served freshly made though the beef patties were a bit saltier than I recall. Still, it was a pleasing experience. The fries were okay, though they were cool to the touch. The crowds occupying the restaurant gradually swelled throughout my stay, and I couldn't help but notice the speed of processing orders slowed in equal measure if not greater as the onslaught began. I hope that as the new wears off and the processes become refined the Whataburger experience in W-S will grow more consistent and more representative of the product and service they provide in their native Texas. 3.5 stars for now, I think. read more

When I lived in FL Whataburger was the jam! I was very excited to get one in Winston & apparently so was everyone else in the state... the place was packed! Standing room only. I suspect this will die down, and to be honest- it has to or it won't stay successful for long. Order came out, had to ask for our drink cups, she comes back with cups only for me to be realizing we were missing everything but the burger for my daughters kids meal- once we finally got all our food; the burger was delicious- I will give them that. The fries were cold though... which was a bummer cause their fries are typically really yummy. My oldest rated his burger a ONE! Which shocked me - tough crowd! I used to eat at Whataburger when I went to college in Richmond Va. in the 60's. The burger was served freshly off the grill and was juicy and delicious. This new restaurant the burger was not juicy as it must have been cooked earlier and just sat in some pan. It was tasteless with a few scattered onions and a dribble of mustard. I also could not taste the cheese on it. The onion rings were tasteless. None of the food was hot but almost cold. I know this place is still very new but they definitely are not the place to eat until they fix all of the issues that they have. I went with a group of people and they messed up ALL of our orders I had to send mine back and they even messed it up a second time all I ordered was a cheeseburger with cheese and pickles ONLY, how hard can that be??!! The first time they gave it to me it was covered in mustard and ketchup, the second time they fixed it I had absolutely NO pickles on it, by the time they had given me my second sandwich we had already been there for well over an hour so I didn't even bother going back up there to have it fixed for a third time just to have to wait even longer to eat. They also forgot some of our orders so people in our group waited on their food for well over an hour, this place is suppose to be a fast food restaurant but it definitely is not that. When we went up to the register to check on our missing orders I over heard the lady at the register tell everyone in line/ waiting on food that there was going to be a 30 minute wait on everyone's food, by this time it was 12:00pm and people were lined out the door waiting on food and waiting to order there were ALOT of complaints from people in line and also a lot of people returning food due to the orders being wrong. All in all we did NOT have a very good experience here at all and I definitely do not plan on going back anytime soon. Welcome to town, Whataburger! I was so excited to give this a try the other night when I was out and about. Unfortunately-I arrived and there was a double-drive thru line that was backed out to the Starbucks. Okay, fair. It's new and people are beating down the door to try it. Good for Whataburger! However, the line creeped along and there was no way to get out if you decided you couldn't wait that long. I timed it from when I pulled in until I pulled out and it was 58 minutes. Two minutes shy of an entire hour waiting in a drive through. Honestly, I can't believe I did it, but I didn't really have a choice once I was in, I was in. The service was good. The lady taking my order was very kind, personable, and gave recommendations based on her own experiences and I was confident in my selections. Unfortunately, the food was not worth the hype. The bun was stiff as a board and I ended up taking off the whole bottom part. The burger patty had no flavor and it slid all over the place when I tried to hold it to eat. The fries were hot when I got them, but they quickly turned cold and limp and were almost chewy at that point. I also grabbed a spicy chicken sandwich and it had good flavor but it was a dark brown like it had been fried and then left sitting and then dropped in again to "reheat" it. Which was a bummer. I decided to try the new Whataburger in Winston-Salem since it's a well-known Texas chain, but this ended up being one of the worst fast-food experiences I've ever had -- from service to food, everything was a complete disappointment. Drive-Thru & Service The line was wrapped around the entire building, and the service was painfully slow. While I was waiting, the drive-thru employees were cussing at each other because someone messed up an order. This was happening right in front of customers -- loud, unfiltered, and extremely unprofessional. When it was my turn to order, the employee actually leaned halfway into my car, which made the whole interaction uncomfortable. The car in front of me couldn't get their order, and instead of having them pull forward to a numbered spot, they kept them parked at the window, blocking the entire line. My food was ready long before I ever got to move, but I was stuck behind them because the drive-thru workers did not know how to run the line properly. It was clear the whole operation needed serious training and structure. Food Quality Once I finally got my food, things somehow got even worse. Burger The burger was honestly shocking: The patty was paper thin The whole burger was cold The bun was smashed flat, and the entire thing looked like someone sat on it and stomped it together The avocado was mushy and turning brown The tomatoes were soggy and sliding off The overall texture and taste were just wrong It did NOT look or taste like anything freshly made. Whataburger brought it today! Very few customers, so fighting a crowd was not an issue. Food was 12 minutes to the table. Been eating there for 50+ years and made to order food takes time. We started coming here right after they opened. The first time we came the line was ridiculous and it took us between 30-45 minutes to make it all the way through. We were understanding because we knew they had just opened and a lot of people were going to be there. The second time we went the employees were all yelling at each other about their personal lives and then reluctantly coming up to take peoples orders. The service was incredibly slow, but like before the food was good! Today we went for our third time and the girl working the drive thru sounded annoyed to be taking our order. She asked for our name and we told her and she gave us our food. We got the right drinks and the food looked correct, but when we got home we realized we got something completely different than what we ordered. When I lived in El Paso this was my go to for a great burger experience! So was thrilled to see it come to Winston. Tried it today and was very disappointed. Went in to eat, ordering was great, no issues. Unfortunately there was no heat in the dining area. Waited for at least 15 minutes for the food. Fries were good and apparently just came out of fryer. I went to Winston Salem location at 915 am to place an order but no one answered the drive through so I drove up to window and no one came . I did this a total of 3 times with same result . I then went inside thinking there must be an issue only to find nobody was at the register until after about 5 minutes a young man showed up who said he does not take orders and does not know how ! There was one other person there who was a woman but never came to assist . There was also an employee outside screaming on his phone who saw me drive through 3 times and saw me go in the building but never stopped his phone conversation to assist. I left 40 minutes later with nothing but aggravation and dissatisfaction! This place will be closed in Winston area in a short time due to this type of experience . Waited a few weeks after they opened to give this place a fair shot--huge mistake. The place was absolutely filthy: overflowing garbage cans, dirty tables, food and drinks all over the floor, even trash blowing around the parking lot. It was disgusting. The staff were just as bad. We had to ask seven times for a sauce they forgot, and the girl bringing food around completely ignored us each time--not even a word or glance. We finally had to interrupt the manager at the counter (while he was helping a line of guests) just to get what we paid for. Thankfully, he was the only polite one there. This was my first time at What a Burger. We were tired and hungry--it is one of the closest restaurants to our house. We don't do carry out, and the inside was a one fourth full. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich and a malt. My partner ordered a small burger, fries, and a drink. The Blueberry malt was excellent, but it would not come up through the straw, and they don't have spoons--so I was left to attack it with a fork. My chicken sandwich had a very runny sauce that didn't want to stay in the bun, so it was very messy, although not bad tasting. My partners fries were about two inches long, thin pieces, pale and tuff . Not like any potatoes I have eaten in my 90 years experience. I have been a fan of Whataburger in Texas for over 30 years, so I was excited to hear they were opening one in Winston Salem. Well, my excitement didn't last long. My first visit to the Whataburger in Winston Salem was terrible. It was nothing like the originally. The burger/meat itself had a weird taste, the lettuce was hardly there and the bun was stale. I think maybe the owner should go back and learn how to make a real Texas Whataburger. The only good thing about it was the size, at least they followed that standard. Don't get me started on the organization of the drive through. There was none. Once we got to the window I saw nothing but chaos, workers scrambling trying to figure out what order went to what car, people upset because the orders were wrong, it wasn't a good experience. Me and my girlfriend decided to give this place a try, and it was one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. The drive-thru line was wrapped around the building, nowhere to park, so we went inside. The inside was completely cluttered -- shoulder-to-shoulder with nowhere comfortable to sit. Ordering was a mess. The cashier clearly had no idea what she was doing, and in a place that busy, it makes no sense to put someone brand new on the register. We waited 20-30 minutes just for food, and then another 20 minutes for my shake because "the machine had to reboot." Last I checked, ice cream machines don't need to reboot -- and if they're being cleaned, you're supposed to have a backup. The food was awful. I got an avocado burger, fries, and a shake. My girlfriend got a plain cheeseburger with pickles. The fries tasted like they'd been cooked in chlorine and were stale. My burger was just okay, but hers was bone dry -- like a McDonald's patty that had been left sitting out all day. The strawberry vanilla shake didn't taste like strawberry at all -- more like medicine. Even the Sprite tasted off and looked discolored. By the next day, I felt absolutely sick -- dizzy, nauseous, like food poisoning. I haven't eaten since that meal. For two people, the bill came out to almost $40, and it wasn't even worth $10. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. I've had better food at McDonald's, and I wouldn't even eat this again if I was drunk. read more
