The ambiance, however is excellent, with lots of deer trophies and tasteful decor. The sausage has traces of gristle and the casing is too tough for a plastic fork to penetrate. I didn't finish mine. The pork ribs were mediocre when compared to most other BBQ places I frequent. The Mac and cheese was overcooked to the point of not being recognizable. The cobbler was good, as was the service. "SLICED BRISKETLICIOUSNESS" On our Overnighter to San Antonio last Monday, we stopped to eat along the way at Cooper's Bar-B-Q & Grill in Junction, TX. We have been here before and Love their Texas Smokin'. There are lots and lots of Pick-Up Trucks in the parking lot - it's West Texas and everyone has a Pick-Up Truck. Went inside and the place looks the same, love the decor all around. They display all the different types of Meats they smoke here and it all looks Smokin'liciousness, just like Smokin'liciousness should look like. My Wife ordered the Sliced Brisket Sandwich and I went with the Sliced Brisket Sandwich (we think alike) and picked-up lots of Onions and Pickles, also some Beans and Black Berry Cobbler - with a couple of drinks. Didn't take long to go through the line and find a booth, even with many a people here for Lunch. These Brisket Sandwiches have lots of sliced Brisket on them and are really good. They are Mighty-Meaty with Smokin' Good Flavoring. They also have an area where you can add more sauce to your sandwiches if you want. Their Beans are Tenderlicious and flavorful. Love Black Berry Cobbler, and this is some of the Best Ever with lots and lots of Blackberries. We both really enjoyed these sandwiches and ate it all. It was a really nice cruise all the way to San Antonio. I told her I would leave the hatch open and she could enjoy the view - but she didn't go for that either. Maybe next time. We arrived here around 3:30 PM, in between lunch and dinner. My brother is a truck driver and he told us we absolutely had to stop here, even if we weren't hungry, to get some brisket and just snack on it in the car. That's exactly what we ended up doing. We have been going to Coopers for as long as I can remember. We stop there on our way to National Parks out west. I've read some bad reviews and wonder if they were at the same restaurant. The service was orderly and friendly. We bought the three meat plate and a chopped beef sandwich. Both items were delicious. The only very minor thing was the coleslaw was not as fresh as I would like and the rub on the brisket was a little too salty for my taste but my husband loved it all. The total bill was $21.22 and they actually charged me $.79 for tapwater which I think is ridiculous. The cashier probably should've worn me when I said I wanted water. The website states being your pup and kids! let the kids burn off energy on the playground while the pup and your family enjoy food outside. Except one major problem. The playground and "dog friendly patio" are on opposite sides of the building. So if you're a single parent or solo adult with kids AND a dog, you can not have them both in the same place. So pray it's not too hot to leave your dog in the car or tied to the gate of the playground. Very frustrating and extremely inconvenient advertising false information. As you drive through Texas, especially the western part of the state, you'll come across little family BBQ joints just like this. They are a staple of Texas life. This one has been around for quite awhile and I'll be honest... I'm still a little confused. They have big beautiful smokers as you walk up and an interior that's very Sizzler-esque. There's a sign on the door as you are going in talking about how they are short staffed and please be nice to the ones that are working. Always a good reminder for everyone these days. I picked the pork ribs and had a variety of sides. Unfortunately, the care they take smacking their meats do not apply to the sides. Pinto beans instead of baked beans. The coleslaw was straight out of a gallon cardboard container. The desserts through... hold up, are those hand made cobblers?!? Peach, pecan (that's a new one for me) and blackberry! Oh, please and thank you! Got myself a big old scoop! Warm, gooey, sticky... delicious. The best thing I've had in awhile. More of that please! And then there is the BBQ sauce. What is this stuff?!? I'm a world class saucier. I've won more awards than I'll mention and I STILL couldn't figure it out! It's slightly salty, with a citrus undertone. It's not fatty or creamy at all. It's what I'll describe as the cucumber water of BBQ sauces. It's light, refreshing and I'm not certain what it's adding to the meat except moisture. It's without a doubt the most uniquely vague BBQ sauce I've ever seen or tasted. At first I thought it was a version of a North Carolina BBQ but it's definitely NOT a vinegar base. Thank GOD! It's not sweet either. It's very subtle. I'd almost say it's a form of au jus. And unfortunately, if you'd like a more traditional BBQ sauce, they don't offer this option. I mean, being a former chef myself I get the impulse to protect your traditions. BUT... you also need to meet the customer half way. Not even offering a more traditional BBQ sauce like for instance Sweet Baby Ray's you are pushing away business. Sometimes it's not just about what the chef wants... this is an important life lesson to learn in the restaurant business. I'm glad I stopped. The meats and desserts are worth the stop. The people behind the counter could barely be bothered to wait on us. I kept waiting for them to bring out the bouncy house, so they would have something to do besides grab ass with each other. The bar b cue was mediocre and the sides weren't even that. A customer brought a smoked pork chop back because it was too dry, and I'm almost certain they put it back where the cooked barbecue was served. ( not 100% positive) . The place was dark and gloomy. I've been going here since I was a kid. I went recently and would say that I really liked the sausage a lot. I also had the brisket and it was smokey but seemed like it was more flavorful in the past. I'm not a huge fan of their bbq sauce but I really liked the potato salad and beans. My family and I were taking a road trip so just stopped by here for a quick meal. We weren't really expecting much since we kinda just picked a random place that was nearby and based on the reviews, I was a bit hesitant about it. We got two plates to share, each with brisket and jalapeno sausage and sides of cole slaw, potato salad, and green beans. I honestly think it was nowhere near as bad as some of the reviews made it out to sound. The reviews make the food sound atrocious but I felt like the brisket was quite juicy and tender and the sausage was not bad, albeit a little salty. The homemade barbecue sauce and coleslaw were also not bad. Since this was the only time I came in, maybe the food quality fluctuates which explains some of the reviews. That being said, of course this was not the best barbecue I've ever had nor was I expecting it to be, and I feel like the other reviews are a bit harsh. Folks pick their favorite BBQ locations for the different types of meat and this place has my favorite brisket in the state. I like the lean versus moist. Plenty of tables inside and some nice outdoor seating beneath some large Oak trees. We make it a point to plan a quick pitstop at Cooper's every time we drive through Junction. Their bbq is delicious! Lately, we've been enjoying their brisket sandwiches, both sliced and chopped...but, their bbq plates are yummy too. It's also a great spot to stretch the legs, even if you prefer the drive-through vs indoor eating. They have several picnic tables shaded under a huge oak tree; a couple of green patches around to let the furbabies sniff about; and a small playground upfront for the kiddos. The worst BBQ we have ever had; the location and truck traffic give Cooper's exposure - but look somewhere else if you want 'REAL BBQ'! You are simply a captive customer once you enter Cooper's. Ask questions after you pay and expect a rude response. The brisket was not properly smoked, and the fat was not rendered during smoking. Furthermore, the uncut brisket was left to dry out under the heat lamps and was not cut cross-grained for serving. This left the meat dry and difficult to chew, if you thought it was luscious, it's because you were eating the unrendered fat. The sauce is a disgrace was not sauce but some sort of brine concoction and forget the sandwiches as you end up with a lot of dry buns that end up being just pasty bread. Once you pay, even after leaving a tip at checkout, you don't exist! The ribs were more tasteless than real BBQ Ribs and again forget the sauce - ketchup would be a better choice! If you choose to eat outside under the oak tree, be prepared to deal with a myriad of feral cats that apparently call the area home. read more

Making a trek north and stopped in Junction for the night. Saw the Cooper's BBQ sign and figured this was probably going to be my last "taste of Texas" for a good long while. Well, let me tell you. Cooper's did NOT disappoint!! This is legit bbq! I ordered two plates, one chicken and one combo of brisket and sausage. The sausage is not housemade but is made elsewhere with their recipe. And it's good sausage. The brisket was moist (even the lean cuts), smoky and full of central Texas bbq flavor. These folks are doing it right. The chicken had great flavor, but was a little dry. Good thing they provide little containers of bbq sauce. On that front, Cooper's did a stellar job putting together the to-go dinners. There were plenty of (needed) napkins, cutlery, packages of onions and pickles and slices of white bread. The food wasn't degraded any in those styrofoam containers. I can't tell you how many times I've passed this place while traveling in and around my great state. It's sad that, on my exit, I finally chose to try it. This is excellent food; sides and all. Oh yeah, do NOT leave there without getting one, each, of their blackberry and peach cobblers. Oh my!! Prices are reasonable and the service is top drawer.
