Solid breakfast but pretty overpriced. I suppose most people visiting the NIH are expensing their meal but if you're not, like me, I think you can probably do better even if it is less convenient. As far as my Western Omelette it was decent and the coffee was good. read more

We decided to try Coopers Mill for breakfast. We ordered: All American (bacon, eggs over easy, bagels, tea), All American (sausage, eggs over medium, muffins, juice). They both came with home fries. These were buy one get one free on uber eats. We didn't get to choose the bagel, muffin, tea, or juice so we were interested to see what we would get. We got a cinnamon raisin bagel with cream cheese, a blueberry muffin, earl grey tea and orange juice. This breakfast honestly felt like a hotel continental breakfast and we aren't sure but we think this is actually located inside a hotel. The home fries were pretty salty. Definitely glad we did not pay full price because it is not worth it. It is a hotel breakfast. We won't be eating from here again. The food wasn't great but it also wasn't terrible, there are just better options in the area. read more

Probably like every other person that goes to Cooper's Mill I did so because I was staying in the hotel. If I had other options nearby I probably wouldn't have gone here. The decor was nice and it appeared well maintained, it was just featureless. It is the sort of place that you would promptly forget everything about a month after you have been there. I was pleasantly surprised with this place. Even though this restaurant is inside of a hotel, the food is very good! We had the old school tots, rigatoni, and beyond burger and everything was excellent! Food was hot and tasted fresh. We ordered two alcoholic drinks - bourbon honey pot and a different bourbon drink - both were really good. If we didn't have other plans that night we would've stayed here and had more drinks. The service was super friendly and attentive. They definitely make you feel welcome here. I think I might become a regular. read more

I made an Open Table reservation today for lunch or brunch after church (Easter Sunday). We have not visited this Marriott's for years (but it is where my husband & I first met nearly 20 years ago). When we arrived and looked around, we asked for a table for two in the rear corner, and we were seated there. The restaurant is an open design, without many partitions, and we prefer a quieter seating area when we can. We had looked online at the lunch menu, but when we arrived, they were still serving a breakfast buffet, so we opted for that instead. The main buffet had several types of fruit, eggs, bacon, both chicken & pork link sausage, & both omelet and waffle stations. On the other side, they had a selection of breads, including bagels, mini croissants, English muffins, and pastries. They also had oatmeal and yogurts. Our server did not appear immediately, but a young woman who may have been a manager came over to get us started and brought out our drinks right away. Then she came back and introduced our server, who was very attentive thereafter. They validate parking. It was a good, quieter solution than the typical frenetic Easter situation at bigger restaurants. Next time, I will go back to try that lunch menu. read more

Was here on business and unfortunately got into town super late. Thankfully, the bar/restaurant is open until midnight (same w/room service options)! Rather than hermit up I decided to go down to the bar and grab a bite and glass of wine. The ambience is nice as well, it's that rustic-chic style with plenty of large tables for group gatherings should you be here with friends/colleagues. In the AM I tried their egg white sandwich, Seasonal fruit (which turned out to just be an apple), and a hot tea. Overall, both the food and drink selections are ample and the prices are on point for what you get for the dinner/late night. However, I would skip the a la carte breakfast option in the future...my one cup of tea was $5 and the "seasonal fruit" a.k.a. apple was $2. Considering the lack of food options easily accessible for the car-less traveler I'd say Cooper's Mill is a surprisingly great spot tucked right into the hotel. read more

I've been here twice since the hotel was renovated; once last October for dine-in and once this past Friday for take-out. The restaurant is really beautiful and has a rustic charm that seems fashionable these days. When there are events going on in the hotel, it can get packed even on weekdays, as was the case when I dined in last year. This Friday when I carried out, it was a lot emptier, but there's something about the acoustics in the restaurant and the lobby that makes me feel like I have to raise my voice to be heard. I thought the food was not bad, but very pricey. When I dined in the first time, I got the salmon with succotash, which was colorful and filling, but a bit steep at nearly $30. This most recent visit, I got the pig & fig flatbread, which I enjoyed a lot, and which was more reasonably priced. Both times the food was beautifully presented. The service can be very slow, even when the restaurant does not appear to be busy. I would love to try some of the other items on the menu if I'm ever back in the hotel, but hopefully only if I'm not paying. read more

I was surprised that they ran out of tater tots on a Saturday afternoon. At least the manager apologized when walking past my table. After looking over the menu again, I decided on the chicken appetizer with Mumbo sauce. The chicken looked appetizing as you can see in the photo. But when I cut into it, it was reddish and was very fatty. I showed the undercooked chicken to the waitress. She apologized and took the plate away. When she returned she said explained that they checked each piece and that's how the chicken is when it's cut from the bone. So I decided to try the burger. It was okay, nothing to rave about. After about 30 minutes the manager came to my table and apologized for the chicken appetizer being undercooked. I restated what the waitress had said about it and he reassured me that if I said it was undercooked then it was. That was impressive. Instead of offering to comp my meal, (like in other restaurants I have been to where a mistake was made) the waitress said that "they" were offering me a complimentary dessert. All in all, if I stay at the Bethesda Marriott again I will go back to taste the tater tots (hopefully they will have enough to serve) and order something else. read more

Most of the reviews here suggest that the food is pretty good, but the service can be lacking. My experience was consistent with this. This was the second time I ate here. For starters we had the tater tots and pickles, both of which I recommend. I never liked tater tots growing up, but these are large and satisfying, with a fluffy interior and crispy exterior. The pickles are fried in a light batter yet still retain their tang. For dinner, I had the forgotten grain bowl, a mixture of different grains with sweet potato, broccoli, and cauliflower, which was satisfying and tasty. A walnut sage pesto added some flavor without being overburdening the dish with fat. The vegetables were well cooked, retaining some crunch. Unlike some places I have had similar dishes, the grains played a supporting role - just enough to provide some body to the dish. The only miss was the poached egg, which was overcooked to the point of being close to hard boiled. I opted not to add meat to mine, but hungry diners may want to supplement with something because the portion is not huge. For dessert, we had the apple cinnamon flatbread, which reminiscent of a healthier take on apple pie. It was a bit dry, but flavorful. It might be a good choice if there was some ice cream to pair it with. The fried cookie dough was a surprise hit. The small spheres were the perfect size for the dish, avoiding the trap of becoming a grotesquely overindulgent experience. Service was a bit slow, but the biggest issue was the basics. Even most low end restaurants aggressively keep water glasses topped off, but mine was frequently empty and stayed that way for much of the meal. Dessert was served without any required silverwear, which we had to poach from a nearby table after waiting some time. Our server eventually returned with some forks, but far too late for a dessert that is supposed to be eaten warm. Overall, the expierience was saved by the food. While I didn't try them, the burgers and crab cakes got good reviews from my fellow diners. read more

We stayed at the Marriott during COVID-19 - I was hesitant to have dinner here because of the limited menu - Brussels sprouts were delicious - crispy and sweet with almonds which was interesting - the crab cake was a decent size and was delicious - meaty not a lot of bread. I ordered the steak and scallops. The food was amazing. Their angus steak was the best I had out of majority of restaurants I been to. It has a woody smokey taste, and it is complimented by baby potatoes and the best-cooked string beans I've had in my life. I normally don't like string beans, but this restaurant turned a totally unlikable dish to a lovable one. It's likely due to their ingenious Sous-chef and how particular he is when preparing and cooking dishes. The presentation was also amazing. The scallops came with grits (I think it was), not exactly something I like either, but turned out good either way. read more

Long story short - not very impressive. Turkey sandwich: lame turkey, weird pesto, big serving, okay fries Wild boar flatbread: very oily and heavy, definitely do not eat by yourself. Salty and fatty, cloying. Unimpressive bread. Little truffle scent. Fish with red lentil pasta: pasta was al dente not in a regular pasta way, but in a this is made from whole grain way. Too salty, esp with olives. Fish didn't taste very good although seemed cooked decently Crab cake: very little filler, very good rolls. surprisingly no overwhelming tartar sauce or something of the like. A little fishy. Burger: decent burger, a little under seasoned in terms of salt. Not an impressive sear or grill. Minerally, not very fatty blend. Juicy and tender though Mushroom flatbread - blonde dough, cheese has melted into a weird thick plastic-y layer. Wings - I feel like these have been brined, because they're almost overly juicy. If they are brined, that negates the point of getting bell evans air dryed wings. The mumbo sauce is strangely sweet with some fruitiness and acidity. Not in a good way, like some fresh pineapple salsa, but more like you dumped a bunch of existing ingredients together like ketchup, corn syrup, pineapple juice, maybe a splash of orange juice. I stopped in Coopers Mill because I was staying at the Marriott. Menu had a good variety of entrees and the bartender gave me some good suggestions. I tried the flatbread and the Brussel sprouts. The flatbread was good but the fontina cheese left the flatbread greasy. The Brussel sprouts were nice and soft with an ice hint of lemon - not overbearing. Definitely a no. This was one of the worst meals I've ever had. First, the burgers were mediocre at best, but the biggest problem was the cheese that they had on top of it which was so strong and stinky, it just ruined the burger. It tasted like straight feet. The smoked pastrami/corned beef sandwich was so smoky, it overpowered the entire Sandwich and made it taste like chemicals. It was terrible. The shrimp on my ceasar salad was super rubbery. Not something I typically enjoy. My "artisan" root beer was a mug root beer, which is a Pepsi product. I guess they consider Pepsi products artisanal. I have stayed here three times and the restaurant is very good with a wide selection catering to various tastes. What sets it apart is the bartender, Zobe. A true mixologist and really one of the most attentive and pleasant individual I have met in some time. I always love the convenience of restaurants in hotels and "Cooper's Mill" did not disappoint. This American fare restaurant is located in the Bethesda Marriott where we stayed. This is a pretty large restaurant considering the location with a large bar. Cool modern decor...combined with rustic wood accent. Upon our arrival we were seated and picked out drinks! I got the "Queen Bee" mocktail which was delicious with natural Bethesda honey syrup. The only thing, as most cocktails are it's small so don't expect to hold it for your whole meal, but you can stretch it out with water because it's pretty sweet. For my entree I chose there "DC Wharf" jumbo lump crab cake which was amazing. The food presentation here is crazy with creativity which I like. The crab cake had no filler and is super large. One of the largest I've encountered (2 in 1) since I can say I'm a crab cake expert!!! The only reason I'm giving 4 and not 5 is because our waitress could have been more attentive. She would disappear for long periods of time and we couldn't find her. But the food is amazing you won't be disappointed! read more

Gotta say, it's not often I offer 5 stars for hotel restaurants. Normally I stay at the Marriott on Democracy, having since experienced the food at Copper's Mill at the Marriott on Pook's Hill, I will be booking here moving forward. Food was quite delicious. Tater tots were dense, crispy and very flavorful. Naked wings w/Evans dipping sauce was superb. Crab-cake sandwich was excellent. Wait staff both times were friendly and attentive. Overall the hotel appointments, my room, fitness center and friendly hotel staff made this a 5 star stay. read more

Based on the less than stellar reviews I wasn't expecting much when I chose to have dinner here while a guest at the Marriott. I do NOT agree with the 3.5 star review bc I had an excellent dinner and equally excellent professional service. The crab cake sandwich is the way to go. It was creatively served on a wooden board with a tin of delicious crab fries, crisp pickle and condiments. It was a generous portion, served hot, cooked just right, and everything fresh as could be. I was very impressed. My waiter was right on and very pleasant. My martini was poured from a shaker...table side...I hate when servers juggle it across the room from bar to table. I can't figure out the 3.5 star overall rating...it is a shame to see that...this place is 5 star (for a restaurant in this category) in my book and believe me...I can be very picky. This restaurant is in the lobby of the Bethesda Marriott. It's nice and spacious, seems to be recently remodeled. They seem to be going for a rustic (read: hipster) atmosphere with wooden furniture and old-timey light fixtures. They have a handful of craft beers on tap, which was great. They even offer a beer flight of tasters. One night I was chilling at the bar and ordered a whiskey on ice and they served it to me with a perfect sphere of ice! Fancy! Bartender was cool and friendly, and they have a couple TVs showing sports games. The next day I had the breakfast buffet, since $18 seemed like a fair price: eggs made to order, waffles made to order, selection of continental breakfast foods, fresh fruits, cheese blintzes, omelettes made to order... You could really have a field day here if you wanted too. Even comes with coffee and OJ. Overall, it was a great place to eat and drink if you didn't want to stray far from the hotel. read more

What an unexpected surprise to find a local, farm to table restaurant that operates as almost a separate entity from a hotel. Definitely not a typical hotel restaurant. Excellent selection of beers and as someone from the north, the Crispy Bell & Evans Buttermilk Chicken & Waffles and the Crab Soup perfect are delicious, authentic and indigenous! If you're local in Bethesda, or traveling and staying at the Bethesda Marriott, Cooper's Mill is a hidden gem not to be missed. read more

As far as hotel restaurants go, it was easy and fairly good food. Not kid friendly as other ratings indicate though. They are friendly in that they have high chairs and don't turn you away, but the menu isn't suited for kids at all. Servers were friendly, food was warm, and it was an easy meal though. read more

We dine here regularly because we are a family of a Maryland football player. This is the hotel where they stay. However we choose to dine here. The service is top notch and the food is delicious. My family and I really enjoyed this restaurant. We visited multiple times during our hotel stay for breakfast, lunch and dinner and had impeccable service as well as quality food. The entire team was wonderful! Claudia Mullins was especially gracious when seating the family -- and was also nice when my 20 month old son grew bored and began to either fuss or "explore" the restaurant. I was staying at the hotel and doing some work and it got a little too late to venture out into the main of Bethesda so I figured I would try this revamped restaurant that they were bragging about with their signage. Mistake #1 - believing the signs. Mistake #2 - staying to eat after looking at the menu and not seeing much of a selection and must less that read as interesting or appetizing sounding. I settled on the a kale and romaine Caesar salad to start and the lamb leg for an entree. Their selection of 'craft' beers was pathetic and their wine list was equally depressing, so I opted for iced tea and I feel that was a pretty good call. One of the bartenders was very good with his service and the other looked at me like he would have preferred that I turned around and walked out. Unfortunately, bad bartender started me off by taking my order (not a good first impression, especially given the unimpressive menu), but good bartender brought my food, kept my iced tea full, and took my dessert order (more on that later). The salad was ok, but was the more leafy pieces were pretty flaccid like the salad had been left out in the warm air too long and the majority of the salad was composed of small pieces that were cut from small young or inner romaine leaves that are heavily stem and not much leaf. Over all, it was tough to eat, because the flaccid pieces were difficult to fork and the stem pieces were difficult to scoop. The dressing was missing any hint of anchovies and while creamy and a slight bit peppery, lacked any real character that is typical of good Caesar dressing. I can say that when I squeezed the lemon from my iced tea over the salad, it improved the flavor considerably, much brighter and more full of character. No lemon came with the salad (iced tea was a really good call). The Parmesan that was on the salad was small pea-sized pieces that look like it came from the bottom of the grating receptacle and were the leftovers. It was neither skinny strings nor large shavings and pretty much fell to the bottom of the plate. The entree, "Falling Bark Hickory Lamb Leg," with chimichurri butter and pickled peppers and hominy cake. Sounds pretty good and looked pretty good in presentation...however the lamb was completely overlooked; so much so that it was dry, flavorless, and reminded me of something that may have been leftover from yesterday's lunch and reheated. Even the butter over the top couldn't bring any life to this tasteless, chewy, and dry piece of meat. It is tough to remove the heavy gamey flavor of lamb, but they managed it. I didn't see any pickled peppers, however the lamb was resting on a bed of overly caramelized red onions (also had the look of something left out overnight and reheated) and undercooked asparagus. The hominy cake was decent tasting, a bit like a watery tasting piece of cornbread (complete with kernels of yellow corn), but it was pretty crumbly and fell to pieces when you tried to carve off a piece with your fork, so you had to more scoop it to eat it. Certainly on the slight dry side, but lightly sweet in flavor and light and a grainy in texture. I hadn't eaten all day, so I was starving and quietly and grudgingly ate everything on my plate and the rest of the menu was very unimpressive, so a replacement wasn't really an option. Let's talk dessert. Good bartender politely and eagerly asked if I wanted dessert, and I agreed (in for a penny, in for a pound). He recommended one of the ice cream dishes, but I was in the mood for something pie-like, so I compromised and ordered the peach cobbler that came topped with a scoop of the ice cream that was recommended. When it came in the small cast iron dish that it was cooked or reheated in, good bartender forgot to warn me that the dish was hot, however twenty years in the kitchen taught me to expect it to be hot and sense the heat by putting my hand near it and not on it, so I managed to avoid that pitfall. The cobbler was really overpowered by the sugar and the granola that was the crust and those were basically the only tastes that it had. The texture and flavor of the peaches were much more reminiscent of apples than anything remotely like good peach flavor or texture. I honestly had to separate a peach from any of the crust or sauce to get even the slightest hint of peach flavor. Very disappointing. I can say that the ice cream was sublime; richly creamy, solid vanilla flavor without being overly grainy with real vanilla bean grains or poor freezing process. Outstanding, but even after letting some of the delicious ice cream to melt into cobbler, it didn't really improve the lack of flavor of the fruit or mellow the full frontal flavor of the sugar and granola. I would never go out of my way to come here to eat and I would strongly recommend that if you stay at the hotel, only go here for a mixed drink and an appetizer, but go somewhere else for dinner. read more
