Considering my love for the sandwich, it's pretty surprising that today was my first time experiencing one from Coppola's. The verdict is that it's solid. The ingredients are fresh, bread was nice and soft and portion of meat generous. I had "The Barnyard," which was pretty basic- with turkey, ham, swiss, lettuce, tomato, mayo and mustard, and I opted for Rye bread over wheat. Simple but yummy in my tummy. My friend enjoyed his "Cheese Colombo," which he opted to add eggplant to. I had the day off from work, so gave into a having a Hardywood Singel with my sandwich. After we paid, we were seated, and the food was delivered to us in a matter of minutes. It was not busy at all, but that's probably because we were there at 11. I agree with others in that given that the sandwiches are not served with a side, the prices should be slightly lower. The portion was sufficient for lunch on its own, but typically I would expect to pay $6-$7 or so, instead of the $8 that it costs. Not expensive enough to prevent me from coming back. read more

This is an excellent sandwich shop and deli - everything is fresh and delicious. We got the antipasto salad as a side, which was a good sized portion. Very tasty with chunks of cheese, meat, olives, and a good amount of dressing. I loved the Industrial sandwich which is an Italian sub full of meats, cheese, spice, and great bread. The first time I came here I ordered an industrial cold. It was only ok. I was disappointed because I had heard such great things about coppola's deli and it being so close to my apartment I really wanted it to be good. (Later I'd realize my problem was not getting it grilled). Still, I was determined to give it a second chance, mostly because during my first time there the guys behind the counter were friendly and relatable, asking about my day, the weather etc. The Second time there I struck gold. Because of a fellow yelpers suggestion I ordered the steak bomb with marinara sauce. The steak bomb "100% beef steak and Genoa salami grilled with onions, sweet and hot peppers, mozzarella cheese, tomatoes and Dijon." If you order it with marinara the dijon mixes with the marinara to create an amazing sandwich experience with just the right amount of kick (hidden away beneath the surface) It's become one of my favorite sandwiches and the experience there is always fantastic. Quality ingredients on the sandwiches here - and they are stuffed to the brim. I had the fresh mozerella with basil & tomatoes. It came with a pickle. That plus my bottle of water was eleven dollars. I can't believe that I was born and raised Richmond and hadn't discovered Coppola's until just now. Coppola's makes the best sandwich in Richmond and one of the best Italian subs I have had anywhere period. Although they can run a bit slow, their sandwiches are worth the wait. I have since been to Coppola's several times and have concluded that the Industrial is my absolute favorite sandwich. It's a delicious combination of Italian meats, provolone cheese, and hot and sweet peppers, oil and vinegar, and a sub roll with the perfect texture. We were wanting a late lunch after running some errands, and by bf suggested we stop at Coppola's in Carytown. Apparently it's a known Richmond hangout and been around for years. We got there around 3pm and ordered the Industrial and Steak Bomb. In true deli fashion you order over top of a cooler/glass case. It takes them about 5-10 minutes and then they bring your lunch over to the table. Nice touch! I was expecting them to scream a number out, but it was much classier. ;-) I think both subs were above average, but the Steak Bomb was the better of the two. I'd definitely go back for this sub. Subs are about $8-10, but I honestly think we could have split one. It wasn't huge, but they were packed with meat and filling. If you are looking for a bite in Carytown, they are worth checking out. The signs inside said they offer box lunches too, if you need lunch on the go. Several people got carryout while we were there eating. read more

This is the perfect place if you're in Carytown and you just want a really good deli sandwich without all the frills. It's quaint, the staff is helpful and the food is REALLY good. My biggest complaint is the price. Too pricy for my taste, but very delish. I would've given 4 stars if the prices weren't so high. Also, the chairs REALLY are in need of replacement. They're a little to loose and rocky for my wife (hence the 3 and not 4 stars). Very authentic for an old style deli that's becoming more and more rare these days. I want to go back again to see how their pastrami tastes. While I was there, I had the Prosciutto sandwich, dubbed the "Original Hero". This had a generous amount of salty yet VERY flavorful prosciutto meat, FRESH mozzarella cheese and sweet red peppers that really add and blend the flavors together. The short version (out of 5) Flavor: 5 Originality: 5 Presentation: 4 Service: 5 I was in the mood for a sandwich in Carytown and after reading the glowing reviews, Coppola's fit the bill. I went with the steak bomb with marinara sauce. I asked if they could spice it up. They obliged with extra peppers. If you want it extra spicy, order it with "extra hots". So after a short wait, a server calls out an order number which will be the last two numbers on your order ticket as well as a description of the sandwich. I was greeted with two portions of a meaty sandwich filled with 100% beef steak and Genoa salami. It's grilled with onions, sweet and hot peppers and mozzarella cheese, tomatoes and Dijon. I really appreciated that the tomatoes resembled tomatoes and were not processed versions their former self. The sandwich comes out piping hot. Steam billowing from the meat and melted cheese. One bite and you can taste the quality of the ingredients. I struggled with waiting for it to cool down and so like a good pizza, you continue to bite into it knowing that your tongue might regret it a little later. Luckily, they have a good amount of beverages to quench the heat. Getting back to the sandwich, it's kind of a race to finish it before the bread yields to the awesome juiciness of the marinara sauce. The extra peppers give it a really good kick. Red pepper chili flakes are available table-side if you're so inclined. Bite after bite you can't help but feel satisfied with the Italian flavor filling your mouth but sad knowing that the ride will be ending. The sandwich is shorter that your typical footlong at Subway but it's definitely more about quality over quantity. Highly recommended. read more

After 6 different days of attempting to find a close parking space with no luck, I finally snagged a spot and was looking forward to lunch at Coppola's. I have been eating there since 1985 and it used to be one of my favorite places. I ordered my usual: grilled smoked turkey with a bag of potato chips, a ginger ale from the fountain and a slice of cheesecake. I couldn't believe that my tab was almost $24. The cheesecake went up from $4 to 6.99. The sandwich went up and I guess so did everything else. That's closer to what I'd like to pay for dinner. This sandwich used to be on fresh, crusty baguette and it used to be bigger. This one was on a soft pretend baguette that took it down several notches. They switched to Thurman's meats several years ago and it tastes like turkey w some sawdust in it, to me. I tried to overlook that all these years but with these higher prices and the baguette being gone, Im sorry to say that I wont be going back. read more

Looking for an authentic New York Italian deli in Richmond? Look no further than Coppola's in Carytown. My favorite thing on the menu is the South Bronx Club, which is a triple decker corned beef & pastrami Rueben on rye. Out of sight.... There are many other typical hot and cold deli sandwiches on the menu which look outstanding as well, but I'm a pastrami junky so its tough for me to stray when its this good. Compliment your sandwich with their house made potato salad for a great lunch experience. They've got about 8 tables if you want to eat in. There is no waiter service (you order at the window and they call your number. The wait for the food is reasonable given they are making everything fresh to order. read more

Funny story. A few years ago, I'm walking by Coppola's Deli and I see this guy sitting at one of the sidewalk tables and I think, "Damn, I know that dude. I hope he doesn't see me because I recognize his face but I can't remember his name. This is going to be embarrassing". But, my fear was in vain because "that dude" was Patrick Dempsey - that's Dr. McDreamy to fans of Gray's Anatomy. No joke. Patrick Dempsey had a sandwich at Coppola's while he was in town filming a movie a few years back. Anyway ... I don't know what they put on their subs, but it's like crack or something. The flavor is unbelievable. If I could recreate that flavor, I'd never eat out again. I'd also probably never see my toes again if you know what I mean. Over the years you see a lot of places come-and-go, but there are a few that manage to beat the odds and become icons and pillars of the neighborhood. Coppola's is one of those places. The food is always great, the staff always super friendly, and you can get in and out quickly if you need to. They have about 10 tables inside and maybe 5-6 more outside on the sidewalk, which is great for people watching in Carytown. read more

Not pushy and not overly friendly to the point where I'd want to smack them. When the girl ringing us up caught me eyeing the chocolate chip cookies, she was kind enough to tell me she just baked them and to grab one at the bottom of the stack since those were the freshest. When I want a good sandwich, I get in my car and drive straight to Coppola's. This deli has been serving up freshly made deli sandwiches since 1982 and everything is great. Sandwiches feature Thumann's meats. My favorites include the Reuben with turkey or corned beef, The South Bronx Club (sauteed corned beef, saurkraut and pastrami covered with melted Swiss and Coppola's own dressing on 3 slices of toasted rye) and The Club, an oldie but goodie. I've never had anything I didn't like here. If you go, you need to walk to the back where to counter is to place your order. Make sure to read the printed papers stuck to the front of the deli case, as they highlight different specials. You'll get a ticket with your order, then you grab chips, a drink or anything else you want and go to the register to pay. Coppola's serves my very favorite Dirty Potato Chips, which means lunch here ends up being a total calorie fest. Coppola's also makes homemade side salads. The Antipasto is a very tasty combination of chopped Italian ingredients. Along with drool-worthy sandwiches, Coppola's also serves pasta dinner specials. I never seem to be able to get myself away from the sandwiches, but they do look very good. You can eat inside or outside or take it to go. I've been here a few times with different groups of people and I'm pleased. It's a cute little deli in Carytown and the food is nice a fresh. The only reason I'm giving them 3 stars is because I think their prices are a bit high... cutting the prices by a $1 or so would really help their ratings I think. The times I've gone, I've had the The Acropolis sandwich. It's a tasty veggie sandwich with "chunks of feta cheese, slices of cucumber, black olives, leaf lettuce, tomato with oil & vinegar dressing on a freshly baked roll". The flavors of this sandwich come together nicely and the bread was nice and warm. You do get a sliced pickle on the side but no other sides come with the meal. Not that the sandwich isn't enough, but for the price, I figured you'd get a side. Now if they charged $8 (or so) for half a sandwich and a side with a fountain drink, that would definitely be more doable for most people. The portions of the sandwiches there are definitely good. I've seen a few reviews where people have complained about the meat to bread ratio... I haven't witnessed this before. Every time I go, they always load the fillings in and you almost need a fork and knife to eat it. I would recommend this place to others. :) read more

We stopped in here at the recommendation of the staff at River City Cellars, and it really hit the spot. Italian sandwiches are a weakness of mine, so I'm always happy to try out something new. As an outsider, I have to say that their "chalkboard" menu is sort of hard to read. Luckily I saw their muffaletta listed near the register, so I just went with that. It was really delicious and far superior to my boyfriend's "Industrial", which was good, but I've had better. I think it needed more or better balsamic vinegar. But back to the muffaletta . . . I don't know if that was a special for the day, but they should really add it to the menu. Awesome. We were fighting over the 2nd half, and it's really the reason I'm doling out 4 stars. I really love their sandwiches. I've been here a few times and I am pleasantly surprised every time. I usually get a rueben like sammie or the vegetarian sammie, the acropolis. Always delicious. I've had the unfortunate event to witness a couple ask for their money back because there "wasn't enough meat." I was appalled that they did that because I always feel like these sandwiches are overflowing. It was embarrassing to witness because the sammies are good and big portions. So please don't be that couple and remember quality is more important quantity. I recommended this place to a picky co-worker and he enjoyed it so much, he brought his family. I love this place! I've only had one sandwich - the cheese colombo with artichoke hearts - but it's kept me coming back almost weekly for the last 5 years. My fiance has tried most of their sandwiches. His favorites are the classic and the barnyard. I've eaten here 2 or 3 other times over the past 5 years or so and always have the same feeling when I leave... that I could have gotten a similar quality meal at another local joint for about 25% less. The sandwiches are good, don't get me wrong... for me, the reason I give them 3 stars is because perhaps I'm a cheap-ass or perhaps because I'm right in thinking an 8" sub and a small bottle of water shouldn't be $10 in a joint like this. As for the establishment itself... it's quite small inside and they have very small tables. Tables for 2 that have 4 chairs at them so I can't even give them any points for being a comfy place to dine... it's quite the opposite in fact; you feel like you have to rush because you don't want to be the asshole tying up a table when a family with small kids can't sit down to eat. read more

I've never been to New York City, but I imagine the quintessential New York Italian deli would be much like Coppola's. From the decor to the food, it is very authentic. I had the smoked turkey melt. At first, I just thought I got a standard sandwich. It didn't look like anything special, but it tasted delicious! No comparison to a fast food chain sub. The turkey was flavorful and juicy, the veggies were fresh, and it was perfectly warm. The peppers in whatever sauce they use are also delicious! Only thing I would add is I felt like it should come with chips. It did come with a pickle, though. Great place! Can't wait to take my hubby here! read more

Coppola's is my favorite sandwich place in Richmond. At this point I've tried many of their different offerings and have not yet been disappointed. The ingredients taste fresh and it's clear they care about using quality stuff. Probably a lot of people take out from here, but eating in is a really nice experience, too. The service is always friendly, the atmosphere is cozy and fun, with nice people watching available if you sit by the window or outside. They are speedy and affordable, too. Favorite sandwiches for me are the Honey Turkey, the Pizzaiola, and the Cheese Columbo, but you really can't go wrong. read more

I've only been here once right before a ball game last summer but I had a really fabulous corned beef sandwich. It was moist, tender, flavorful and delightfully salted. Yes I still remember how good it was 8 months later. That's really all the persuading you need. The guys who worked there didn't really seem too interested in anything but jamming out and talking to each other, but whatever they made my sandwich well so that's really all I need from a deli-guy. There is not a ton of seating in here. It's a really narrow building with some chairs in the back so unless you're lucky enough to be the only person in there either take it outside, back to your place, or wait. Thankfully the time I was there I was the only one. I have not been back since June and every time I walk by it to get to my car in the parking garage I get a sense of longing for a great deli sandwich. read more

Just had my first visit to Coppola's, and I am proud to say most of the reviewers are correct.... this place is awesome! Coppola's offers sandwiches, pasta dinners (after 5), and desserts. They also sell Thumann's deli meat and various imported Italian cheeses and supplies. The place definitely seems like a hole-in-the-wall (my favorite). I had the Industrial, which contains Genoa salami, mortadella, capicola ham, provolone cheese, onions, hot & sweet peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, oil & vinegar on a roll. I substituted pepperoni for the mortadella, and had the sandwich grilled (they don't grill the bread though). This sandwich was OUTSTANDING! I would say it is just below Chiocca's in taste, which is saying GREAT things. I will definitely be back for seconds! read more
