CopyCat is my favorite bar. Inside a building on H st. with the kitchen downstairs, bar upstairs and outside on a back patio, you can get whatever vibe you're looking for. A playlist weaves in and out of conversation to provide a great background. The mixologists are attentive and friendly, walking around to fill water cups and drop off goldfish as you view the menu. All of the drinks, some displayed on the chalkboard behind the bar and other on the menu, are very well balanced and enjoyable to watch as they're made. (Ask for the country gentleman - my favorite). I grew up in DC literally 3 blocks away from this spot. While I won't use this space to lament the perils of gentrification, I will say that I'm happy to have a neighborhood go to bar. This place rocks! Replete with Tiki style drinks and tasty appetizers, I find myself frequenting this place at least once a week whenever I'm home. What a fun place. This is a skinny, dark building on H Street with the kitchen on the ground floor and the bar and tables upstairs. Crowded. Noisy. Small little tables. But excellent drinks and bar food. The bartenders are experts. You can even describe what you're in the mood for and out comes the perfect drink. Came here this past Saturday around 5pm. I've heard a lot of great things about Copycat and was excited to finally try it. Copycat has 2 floors (first floor has a few seats in the front area (if you're just looking to eat quickly and leave), and a nice outdoor area with a few tables in the back. It was too hot for my liking so I wanted to go upstairs (I don't think there is central AC so it was pretty hot upstairs too but better than sitting outside). My one friend ordered a Tequila Smash (he enjoyed it- refreshing) while my other friend and I asked for cocktails that weren't on the menu (vodka based with fruit juice). Both our drinks came out tasty (if I remember correctly most, if not all of the cocktails, were under $12 which is a pretty good deal in DC). I will say that if you don't want to be hit with ice every couple of minutes do not sit to the left of the bar (small table by the window). The bartenders here chisel? the ice into the drinks so you get hit by flying ice often (didn't bother us that much but just a warning). We also ordered the Triple Delight Potstickers, Veggie Potstickers, and the Veggie Bao. They were good and pretty cheap but I didn't think they were amazing... Just standard potstickers. I've wanted to try the food and drinks here for a year. I finally had the chance to go tonight. Big mistake. Even though the servers and kitchen staff were polite, the amount of time it took to get my food coupled with the taste and amount of money I paid was ridiculous. My takeout order was placed at 9:30 and I literally did not get my food until 10:30. The ribs were incredibly salty, the crab rice too spicy, and I believe the 2 cocktails that I ordered were actually one pour. I've worked in the service industry over many years and when a customer spends this amount of money and has to wait for an hour for their takeout order, there is always something complimentary offered. The lamb soup was probably the best I've ever had, it healed my hangover. The fried rice was a table side favorite and I would recommend. Although the food was spectacular the service was even better, Joe took thoughtful care of our table, present when we needed him and letting us enjoy when not. He made recommendations that were delicious and allowed a group of us with different palates to all enjoy the same dish. Couple of blocks from my house. This is my go to guilty pleasure almost once a week. The beef skewer is fantastic. The taste is extraordinary. I usually order two skewers and an order of the mixed dumplings (5 or6 to an order). That's enough for one person for dinner. Too bad they don't open for lunch because on weekends because this would hit the spot. They open at 5pm every day. The skewers are a bit expensive. When you come from NYC and there are skewers all over the place for $1-$2, having to pay $4 each skewer is expensive. But sooooo worth it!!! The beef skewer is spicy but you can ask them to put the spicy condiments on the side. They will give them to you in a small plastic cup so you can sprinkle on your skewers as needed. The dumplings comes with a lite dipping soy sauce because they have enough great flavor within them. No need for extras. I don't really know which dumpling I like the best because they are all so different. I can't say I dislike any of them. All great flavors. Even the vegetable one is very flavorful. Menu is small and limited. Now let's move on to the booze. These guys are mixologist geniuses. Making all sort of craft specialty drinks. But I always order the same. The Moscow Mule. It's mixed perfectly and the strong factor is just right. After a few expect to walk down the street with a good buzz. I wish they didn't add that huge custom ice block in the drink. Takes up more space than anything else and you don't get as much of a drink as you should. I will try next time to ask them not to give me the ice. Let's see if that is acceptable. Come early meaning before 7pm otherwise the upstairs is packed to the max. They have a downstairs but it's mostly for to go Orders with a few places to sit. I'm a fan! Copycat definitely fulfilled my cravings. My husband and I arrived around 6 on a Saturday night. We ventured upstairs and immediately went back downstairs because it was standing room only. Luckily the downstairs cafe was empty. We shared the $35 meal for two which included 10 potstickers, 4 Bao buns, 4 skewers and one bowl of soup. They let us customize the order to exclude lamb from all items - we aren't fans. The skewers were hands down the best part of our meal. The meat was tender, well marinated and perfectly cooked. The soup was my next favorite and I found it to be the perfect dish on a cold night. The bao was good but we found the filling was barely there which was disappointing. My husband loved the potstickers but they were also on the small side. Such an incredible mix of good food (served late night), great music, tasty balanced drinks, and friendly service. We ate upstairs near the bar and it would've been perfect except it was just way too loud to even talk to each other. The impossible meat mapo tofu was the standout dish: numbing heat and five spice scented throughout with the perfect sauce consistency made this addictive and comforting. It paired really well with the rice side. The sober soup broth was incredibly porky and unctuous without being too heavy, and the pork filling in the wontons were gingery and complemented the cilantro really well. We read the reviews for Copycat and were especially lured by the ones about their drinks. Having been here, I will admit that their bartender deserves kudos for very well made drinks! We also ordered their pork fried rice and the salt and pepper eggplant. The fried rice was very good and flavorful! This is a pretty cool cocktail bar to check out on H street. They offer Chinese cuisine and have an array of creative and interesting beverages. My most recent experience was an evening trip here but as a heads up it's not the biggest location, the 2nd floor is where the dining happens and there's a long bar and behind it are several small tables next to the stairs and back window, so on most occasions I've been it's usually busy and tough to find seating at least in that particular area. The ambiance is lowkey it's always dimly lit which makes it more appealing as a date night spot. As for the food and drinks they are usually always spot on, I've tried their pork fried rice ($15), the chicken skewers ($22), and the beef noodles ($15) which given the heftier price have all been worth it with regards to the quality of the dishes. Service is hit or miss but the bartenders are great and very knowledgeable about their craft as they've been known to make some really good custom beverages aside from just what's on the menu. In terms of getting food in a timely fashion it varies and tends to be a challenge due to the high volume of customers they appear to always have. But in the meantime while you wait there's a large chalkboard behind the bar listing their large variety of cocktails and the ingredients for each for you to try while you wait. Came here with some friends who recommended this place for dinner when I said I was looking for good dim sum. I had perused the menu beforehand and it must have been outdated because it looked like they offered quite a few vegetarian dishes however there were very limited meatless options - even the tofu has a beef base. I ended up ordering the salt and pepper eggplant and the vegan version of the beef noodles. The vegan noodles were quite good, I think the noodles were house made, but the salt and pepper items (both the eggplant and the shrimp) were so salty they made my eyes water. Literally felt like eating a salt cube- there was no other flavor to them other than SALT. I couldn't eat more than a couple bites before my lips started chapping. The rest of the group ordered the chimnichurri which was served cold which they found odd, pork fried rice, bao, and dumplings. The bao and dumplings were good according to the group but everything else was just ok. Anyways, we got two baos (1 veggie, 1 pork) and then the two of each dumplings. The wait was about 10 minutes which was kinda weird for a fast casual restaurant. When the food came out, it looked exactly what I expected. Quickly wrapped dumplings and regular baos. Taste is where the baos and dumplings failed. The two of each dumplings (veggie, pork/shrimp, beef, chicken/mushroom) hardly had any seasoning. The dipping sauce was so watered down that I'm pretty sure I was dipping into water. The baos were better but still lacked flavor. I think the mainstay of Copycat is the cocktails which I haven't tried yet so I can't ding them too much. This place is way too cool for me, but I went in anyway at the urging of a friend. I can't speak for the food as I didn't get any (smells incredible!), but the cocktails were delicious! They have a cool gimmick where all the cocktails are displayed on a chalkboard at the bar in pie charts that show the % of each ingredient. PRO Tip -- just because it's the biggest slice of the pie, doesn't mean that's what the drink will primarily taste like. A little bit of cinnamon or all spice go a loooong way. They are all $15, so grab a cocktail and sip...slowly. They forgot about our order for a bit, but the bartender thanked us for our patience and sent over a free shot. After the first sip of one of their nuanced and well balanced cocktails, I totally believed the scuttlebut that other bartenders come here to drink after they get off work (and why not? It's open until 3 am on Friday and Saturday nights). Heck, the Szechuan-leaning Chinese food is so good that I'd come here just to eat. But back to the drinks: Although there's an extensive menu of great Tiki cocktails, my heart belongs to citrus-y sours served up in a coupe, and Copycat delivered the drink of my dreams. The 12 Mile Limit (which I am holding up in my picture) is a killer concoction of fresh lemon juice, house-made grenadine, gold rum, rye, and cognac... and it was SO GOOD that I nearly ordered it twice! The bar is upstairs and you'll want to arrive early because it does get crowded and there's very limited seating. It's dimly lit, great music, and you can either order something off the menu or have the mixologists go crazy. You can order food downstairs and I'd give it a 3/5. There's probably no more than 10 seats total so its best to come with a just few people rather than a big group. I love dumplings, if I see them on a menu I will order them, but I wasn't moved by these at all. I ordered the pork cilantro and they weren't that flavorful and were underwhelming. You get 6 pieces for $5. I would've like to try another flavor but you can't mix and match and I didn't want to order 6 more and have the same outcome so I cut my losses. Y'all, my second experience was even more amazing than the first. Trust me when I say, just tell the bartender your favorite liquor and how you like your drinks (ie: sweet, tart, boozy, citrusy, etc.). The drink menu can be a little overwhelming if you've never been to Copycat before, but the incredibly talented bartenders won't steer you wrong. I ordered *ahem* several tequila based cocktails and each one was out of this world. Pricey, yes, but it's DC, people! As far as food goes, I ordered the pork and cilantro pot stickers this time, which were perfectly seasoned. They arrived hot and perfectly cooked with dipping sauce and sriracha by request. As others have mentioned, you also get to munch on Goldfish while you wait, which is freaking awesome, in my opinion. I'm not a real fan of DC as a whole, but I'd legit move there just for Copycat Co. Once I read about this bar and restaurant I knew I had to bring my husband here during our trip. It has cheap eats and craft cocktails. In short - it did not disappoint. We opted to sit on the back patio which unfortunately has a more limited drink menu than the upstairs. But the drinks made by our bartender didn't leave us feeling as if we were missing out. I started off with a Tequila Smash and it was perfect. My husband ordered a Moscow Mule and in truth I tend to never order them because it's a usually a mild (and IMO a boring drink). However, the Copycat Co version was honestly the best I've ever had. The ginger was a nice spice that was much more prominent than others I've had. I enjoyed his so much I decided to order my own as my second drink (only I ordered it with Tequila). As for food, each time we ordered the items came out relatively quickly. If you're incredibly hungry or have a large party you can order one of everything off the menu for $29. As a first time visitor we left as fans of this place. Came here on a Friday night around 11:30pm, and it was pretty busy. Upstairs is the bar which was kinda dark and loud. But love their cool decor (big cat fan here). Luckily, we managed to find a seat for 5 of us at the bar. Service and hospitality was just average. Nothing stood out. Average wait time, and it was definitely too busy for the bartenders to pay attention to us. You do get complimentary Goldfish to snack on! I got the Zombie which was this huge, heavy cup of a tiki. Apparently, it has a shit ton of rum. It was quite potent, but actually tasted good! We got the "One of Everything" that serves 2 it says, but it's actually a lot. We shared between 4 people and barely finished (we weren't really that hungry tho). Sadly, they were out of baos so we got more potstickers and skewers instead. Everything was delicious and filling except the lamb skewer really. The Sober soup was stood out to me. Unique and very flavorful.
