My friends treated us to dinner here, and what a fantastic experience from start to finish. The location alone is worth the visit. Sitting so close to the water with unobstructed beachfront views made for a beautiful backdrop during lunch time. It's the kind of place that instantly feels special without being overly formal. Service was attentive, friendly, and perfectly timed throughout the meal. Our food arrived promptly, and we never felt rushed. I ordered the Seafood Bucatini, and I was genuinely surprised by the portion size. This dish was packed with seafood in every bite, and everything was cooked beautifully. The pasta was flavorful, the seafood was plentiful, and the portion definitely justified the price point. I even had enough left over to enjoy the next day. Went here to celebrate my birthday and it was amazing. First of all the view is 10/10, it is right by the beach and it's the perfect spot to go for a sunset dinner. Absolutely stunning. We came at 7pm and didn't have to wait too long to be seated inside, I imagine outside seating would require a reservation (which we didn't have). The food was great! Cooked perfectly and the chef had a really refined taste. The portion was perfect. Not super filling where my stomach is bursting but enough to be satisfied. The only negative was the truffle fries were mid, you can't really taste the truffle flavor it needed more. Our waiter was the best! He was so funny and making jokes with us, it really helped lighten the atmosphere. He was also very informative on the food, giving us great details and recommendations! He was always prompt to refill water without being asked! They also have me a free dessert for my birthday! I also like that they didn't sing (it's always so embarrassing) so that's a plus for me! There's valet parking for $10, or you can park on the street, or there's meter parking in the same parking lot, so you have a lot of options. Price was on the expensive end for the price. I understand it's fine dining but, $40+ dollars for 3 scallops is a bit much.. Overall, a great spot for a date, to celebrate a special occasion, would not come too often unless I'm rich. read more

I called to make a reservation for last Sunday about a month ago, and the person who answered the phone was super helpful and polite. I was pleased to be able to request a table outside with a view of the ocean. When we arrived at 12:40, the valet parking was FULL as was the public parking across the street so my father-in-law kindly dropped us off and parked a 10-minute walk away at his church. Our table was ready at 1, for a 12:45 reservation, which wasn't bad. Thanks to the awning on the patio, we were in the shade most of the 1.5hrs we spent there for brunch. It was a warm day for San Diego in March, so people were enjoying the beach, swimming, sunning, playing in the sand. We sat with a clear view of the lifeguard station and luckily nothing serious happened while we were there but if it had, we'd have had front row seats to the pole they slide down. Our server Dave was hilarious. He almost didn't know how to be serious, he was so jokey. Apparently he usually works evenings and was filling in for someone at brunch. When we ordered soft drinks, he kept automatically filling them and finally stopped at 3! Here were are orders: (the ones I took photos of anyway): Calamari appetizer (5/5)--tasty, perfectly cooked Flat-iron steak and eggs: (4/5) Blackened Mahi-Mahi sandwich (5/5)--savory seasoning on the mahi mahi, yummy pickled onions, avocado, abd dill pickles on a butter lettuce leaf, crispy skinny fries! I ate it open-faced with a knife and fork and left the bun behind. One of our party had a few food allergies and was able to make sure to order the Mediterranean omelette which was allergen-free. You can't beat the view at this place. Definitely a great ambience being right on the water. The cocktails were tasty and everyone liked their main dishes. I got the Seabass and other people got the short rib. Both were good, but I would say get the short rib if you're hungrier because it's a bigger portion. 4/18/26 checked out the beach near La Jolla and wanted to snack on something before dinner. No reservation so we couldn't sit outside in the deck but we were able to sit at a counter top table and still catch the ocean view. The outdoor patio right on the beach is the star of this restaurant. We always request to sit outside and most seats have some shade. It gets pretty busy on the weekends. We try to go on the weekdays instead to avoid the crowds. Food is hit or miss and a little on the pricey side. Expected in this part of town and the prime beachfront location. They gave us a delicious complimentary carrot cake since we were celebrating a birthday! There is valet parking and I recommend it since free parking in the area is very limited. Paid street parking has a 2 hr limit and the paid parking lot across the street can cost more than the valet parking. read more

It was a beautiful day for lunch on our first visit at Poseidon. Tried the sea bass and crab cake with the Chenin Blanc. The main dish was so impressive that we decided to get half a dozen of fresh oysters from Washington State and then finished off with the flourless chocolate cake with vanilla gelato. Portions are not large but everything came out super fast and very fresh. Didn't catch our waiter's name but he jostled 10 tables at once while still made sure we were taken care of without intruding. Only valet parking ($10) is available but we walked a little ways away and parked on the street. Worthwhile for special occasion and they do have happy hour starting at 3:30pm. read more

When I first moved to this area, Poseidon was one of the regular spots that I patronized. As noted in its name, the business was literally on the beach next to a lifeguard station north of the Powerhouse Park in Del Mar. The waterfront views were at a five star level by itself. If you wanted to park nearby, there were limited metered spots in the lot out front. Most of the spaces were reserved for the valet service. A paid parking lot was available across the street that charged some steep rates. I normally sit at one of the high-top tables across from the bar where one can still see the ocean waves in the distance. Poseidon used to offer a coupon in the monthly mailer that comes to my residence. That has long since been discontinued which was a shame because 20% off your tab was a nice deal. The majority of the items on the bar food menu have remained the same, but the prices have substantially increased. At a recent visit, my pick was the Blackened Fish Sliders. They were served as a pair with french fries on the side. A whitefish fillet was chargrilled and placed inside a brioche bun topped with baby arugula, tomatoes, and tartar sauce. The slider was a nice compact sandwich filled with flavor. The fries were of the shoestring variety that included a cup of ketchup for dipping. The issue was that for two sliders and frites, the cost was $20 which wasn't a good value. Due to the distance, I don't come as often to this part of Del Mar. If I have out of town visitors who want to walk a flat shoreline with gentle waves, then Poseidon on the Beach remains one of the options where I bring them. read more

We celebrated a birthday lunch here at the Poseidon. we had not been here for years. It is quite a bit more upscale since we've been here. We started out with the seafood platter, which was amazing. It included six oysters. five jumbo prawns, fish ceviche, mignon sauce, cocktail sauce and tortilla chips for scooping the ceviche with avocado. All the seafood was high-quality, ice cold and fresh. The tortilla chips could be better. We ordered the calamari strips which we did not care for. They seem thick and chewy. We also didn't like the sauce that it was served with. We let them know and they actually took it off our bill. We did split the crabcake Benedict, which was fantastic. The crabcake was generous in the amount of crab served, tasty and fresh. Poached egg was cooked perfectly and it was not overwhelmed by sauce. The avocado on top was perfect. You could not ask for a better view dining on the patio! Service was fantastic! Was here a couple years ago and had to come back to see if it was still as good as I remember. It Was! I made a reservation because it was a holiday weekend. (Highly recommend.) We were seated on the patio with a view of the beach/water. Started with adult brunch bevvies which were quite tasty and a fun way to kick off the holiday weekend / vacay. We had the Mediterranean omelette, Crab Benedict and a fruit bowl. All were tasty and filling! It was a great brunch to enjoy before heading to the racetrack for the day. Our server was lovely and checked on us periodically to make sure we were good. The patio seating plus a drink is exactly what I needed to unwind and relax. The weather was perfect. From the photos I had seen online and the reviews I had read, I was very to excited to be going to dinner at Poseidon. Upon arrival, we were seated right on the patio with a direct water view. I was a bit disappointed to see how busy the beach was with people and with it being so close to the lifeguard stand... how much stuff was laying out on the beach (ATV, rafts, boat, etc). I was seeing more red/ bright orange than pretty blue water and sand. Regardless of atmosphere, we moved forward with our order. I tried the pink moment which lacked the "sparkling" piece noted on the menu and tasted too much of raspberry syrup so I switched over to sparking rose. We ordered the chilled seafood plateau, the ahi tuna tataki and Brussels sprouts for the table. The appearance was amazing but the taste and texture seemed to let all of us down. The shrimp was chewy and overcooked, the oyster was huge but flavorless, the tuna was unfortunate. The only positive was the Brussels sprouts ... the only thing we finished. For the mains, I ordered the lobster tail which came with 2 4oz tails and load of veggies. I hate to complain this much but the lobster was edible only based on the butter and the vegetables were inedible. For those at the table that ordered steak, not one were cooked as requested which was a big disappointment. Our server was great and very friendly so I have to note that. All in all, at this "nice" of a restaurant, I expected better and I sadly wouldn't come back nor recommend it to anyone else. read more

We were in San Diego for a Marine Corps Vietnam Tankers Reunion. I had to post about my Grandma and Grandpa McKenney's old "Firepit." Any time we're in the area we try to stop in and enjoy a meal. Paid $8 for valet since it's hard to find parking. Fish and Chips: The fish and chips were great; more flavor in the batter than most places. I wasn't a fan of panko buttered fishes but Poseidon's Panko-herb was different; well seasoned and crunchy crust. 5/5 Maine Lobster Tacos - tender and delicious lobster meat perfectly seasoned with cabbage slaw and dressing. 5/5 Crab cake Bennie - flavorful and crispy crab cake with generous crab meat. I was not asking for too much extender/binder but cake wasn't holding together. It came with perfectly poached egg with a runny yolk, and a rich, creamy hollandaise sauce. Potatoes and asparagus were seasoned well and not overcooked. 4/5 Clam chowder - well seasoned, thick with chewy clams and potato chunks the way we like it. Sad to say that the most recent experience was terrible, normally it is consistently been good. I ordered the steak medium-well as I always do but it came out completely burnt. The temperature seemed challenging and when I asked for it to be recooked it took nearly 90 minutes to return to the table... This lead to the neighboring table checking in on us to see if we were okay and asked out loud "how long does it take to cook a steak?" To top of the night the management team didn't do anything to make up for the terrible experience. This was supposed to be a special occasion. Remember in the '90s when there was free food for Happy Hour? Yeah, Poseidon doesn't either. From 4-6 M-F only, food is "just" $17-$22, which represents a massive $3-$4 discount. Drinks are basically $1 off. So your key takeaway here is: don't bust your ass to get here before 6...the discounts aren't that good. Take your time and come whenever. Perhaps the HH crowd will have thinned out by then. Service at the bar was awesome. Great view, as expected. $22 Cod & Chips were good and hearty. I expect freshly battered. Didn't finish the fries. One word.... WOW! This was a recommendation from Steve the concierge at the Fairmont and we could not be more pleased. The setting is right on the water and if you come at sunset, be prepared for a great show! The service was impeccable (thank you Valerie!!). Our server quickly got to us when we were seated, offered to take a photo and provided details on a number of dishes. We started with Brussels sprouts and they were delicious. For entrees we shared the halibut and the tuna. Both were prepared wonderfully well and had an array of interesting flavors... one better than the next. Both husband and I got the surf and turf, and our daughter got the chicken tenders (which actually were delicious lol, I'd order them) we started with bread service, which was yummy. Our server- unfortunately I forgot her name- but she went above and beyond. Keeping our daughter occupied (even those they were just a to-go box and condiment containers) she loved it, ended our night with tres leches and flourless chocolate cake (really sweet) we wanted a cappuccino but the machine was down, so she gave us complimentary coffee- so sweet. Monthly later and nada. I don't leave reviews like this normally, but this was negligent operations followed by lousy customer service. They said they had a new supplier and didn't realize that there were date pits in the salad. Really?, there wasn't just one, there were 3 in mine, and others had them too. I had no way of knowing they'd have dangerous hard things in the salad, so i bit hard onto it. And had a lot of pain, the tooth separated away from others, pulled out of its gum formation. This was my first visit to the legendary Poseidon, and I was really looking forward to it, plus I had a gift card to sweeten the deal. But, my first disappointment was that parking is one of three choices: free parking blocks away; pay a parking meter in front of the restaurant or a meter in their own parking lot!; and valet parking. We parked down the street and walked a bit. We were seated outside on the patio and had a lovely view of the waves crashing on the shore. Server Steve introduced himself and took our orders: salmon for my brother and Hokaido scallops for me. A long time elapsed and we were hungry so I inquired about bread and was told there would be a $3 charge for bread. We ordered some, and two small, warm rolls with herby butter were delivered, but still not our entrees. Finally, our entrees arrived. Mine was not generously portioned but probably an actual serving size. My scallops tasted off, slightly of ammonia, but not strongly. Afterward, I Googled why scallops might taste of ammonia and it is because they are going bad. Steve was not to be found. I ate the scallops, reluctantly. The accompanying vegetables and mashed potatoes were delicious. It is lucky that I didn't get sick from the scallops, as I could have. Next time I will know. While there were a lot of employees traversing the patio, service for us was non-existent. Steve only came by our table at the end of our meal to inquire if we wanted dessert. No one offered to refill our water glasses. All-in-all, this was an expensive, less than stellar experience, and I will not recommend this restaurant, nor return. read more

The place is stunning and on the beach as the name implies. My relative made the reservation as a special occasion dinner. My wife and I arrived early we were seated in a very special location - front corner table, unobstructed view of the beach. While perusing the menu our waitress arrived, - drinks? me - number one priority...I understand it's special occasion...long story from now on.......... My relatives arrived, we placed our order: Chilled Seafood Plateau, Wild Sea Bass Ceviche, Little Neck Clams, Crispy Calamari, Sesame Crusted Yellowfin Tuna. All was OK until I noticed that my entry was Seafood Platter instead of Seafood Plateau - it was a matter of minutes that my plateau arrived. We ordered Wagyu sliders (with an additional slider to the standard two-piece serving for the three of us), two servings of local fish ceviche, wine, and cocktails. Their ceviche is outstanding - the best I've had in a long time! I would gladly make a special trip just for their ceviche from now on. The Wagyu sliders were mouthwatering, and Luciano's exceptional service was the highlight! He treated us to a sample of their truffle fries, which was a lovely gesture! We saw him serving truffle fries to the couple at the next table, and when my friend commented on how delicious it looked, Luciano asked if we want to order too but we were already finishing so we didn't. We had the calamari which was DELISH. Our friends who aren't huge fans of calamari said it was the best they've ever had! We also had the hummus platter (forgot what it was called but it had naan, beet hummus, and a few more things) and it was good. Overall a good spot for food and drinks thats right on the beach. I came here on a Friday afternoon with a reservation for 12:15 PM. I was seated right away outside with a beautiful view of the ocean and beach. I started with a glass of white wine and the ceviche, which was fresh and flavorful. For my main course, I had the seabass served with vegetables and what I believe was a mashed cauliflower purée - everything was absolutely delicious, and I finished every bite. My friend ordered the fish and chips and really enjoyed it as well. Valet parking is $8 during the day. It did take a few minutes for them to get the car since it's such a small parking lot and they were so busy, but it wasn't too bad. The prices are on the higher side, but worth it for the quality.
