    Complementary bread and beans

My friend and I were craving pasta so we were very excited to go to Core de Roma! We went on a Friday, early evening, and luckily we got seated without a reservation (it was getting busy though!). We brought a bottle of wine since it's BYOB ($5 corkage fee). We enjoyed the free bread and beans in oil as we checked out the menu. We were having so much trouble deciding between all of the amazing pasta choices so we picked 3 - spaghetti cacio e Pepe (amazing!), penne arrabiatta (yummy), and we asked for the penne vodka with rigatoni instead (our favorite!)! The service was great and quick and the restaurant had such a friendly family feel. We left very full and are definitely looking forward to coming back soon!

This was our first time at Core de Roma. There's a parking lot in the back. It's BYOB which I didn't realize when I made the reservation. We had a table for 4 at 6:30pm. The restaurant filled up quickly. We didn't order any appetizers. They did bring us a basket of warm, delicious bread and a small plate of beans in olive oil. Our meals came out quickly. We had veal parmigiana, fettuccine Alfredo, lasagna, and gnocchi. Everything was delicious. Our server was hustling around the whole time. There only seemed to be 3 servers for a large dining room. I would definitely recommend Core de Roma and would go there again.

But this is also fitting…read moresince whether its been driving by it back in the day, or through gazing up at it on the hill when I was in Manayunk, La Collina is one of those places that has been in my peripheral vision for a few decades now! For 20+ years, I've known La Collina to be that fancy and classic-looking Italian restaurant on the hill that I've been needing to try. But it took coming across its name when doing my research for possible spots to go to for my birthday to put one and two together, and it led to quite the majestic experience. The friendly and hilarious valet attendants ensured that service was incredible before we even entered the building. And upon entry, we were treated to spot-on recommendations and quality service throughout the evening. For cocktails, I was in awe of the Anejo Old Fashioned, which used Patron and agave syrup instead of the usual whiskey offering, and I also appreciated the classic Negroni. For appetizers, the classic meatballs with homemade marinara and ricotta were an absolute delight, and the eggplant rolatini with spinach, prosciutto, and mozzarella was sheer perfection at its most decadent. For my entrée, I initially expected that I would be eating all the pasta. But the restaurant is also known for its seafood, and the risotto frutti di mare especially caught my eye. and with its calamari, clams, mussels, and shrimp, and perfectly cooked and seasoned rice it absolutely delivered the flavors! Toss in a salted caramel chocolate soufflé with a candle on top, and it easily made for another memorable birthday dinner and a deserving place to recommend!

The service here was pretty good. I really enjoyed our waitress. I ended up getting a Negroni which was amazing. This place makes a killer cocktail. We were seated in the secondary room which quickly filled, and was just as loud. Conversation was difficult. Terrible acoustics. Pescatore is popular. I get it. Management wants to accommodate as many people as possible. As such, seating is tight and tables-for-two are postage sized. I can't deny that our meals were good. You can get vegetables as a side rather than mashed potatoes, but there's an upcharge. (I'm guessing they go with potatoes because they can make a batch and quickly ladle it out. Spaghetti -- my preference -- would likely have to be made-to-order. And as I said, the place is busy.) My husband and I shared a house salad which we topped with "fritto misto" - calamari, shrimp and peppers. Very good! He ordered Veal Saltimbocca and I, Chicken Romano. Both recommended, both with portions big enough for another meal. The staff is solicitous and friendly. Everything came out on a timely basis. We like what we ate. We appreciate BYOB. But that noise! I'll give 'em another try on a weeknight. But if it's no better -- arrivederci, Pescatore!

We decided on it because of, aside from the great food, a private parking lot and outdoor seating. We went on a Saturday evening. The weather was beautiful out (not hot for a summer night-thank goodness!) so we wanted to sit outside. We were seated and decided on starting with the caprese salad and we each ordered a bourbon espresso martini. The drinks were wonderful! The salad was so good and so fresh! A perfect summer appetizer! I ordered the pepperoni pizza and my friend ordered a pasta dish. They make their pasta and you can alway tell when a restaurant does because it's so delicate and delicious! The server who brought out our food told us about the hot honey they had that goes so well with the pepperoni pizza so he brought us each out some to try. I've had it before other places but his kindness and excitement at wanting us to try it was so kind. And it was great with the pizza! A solid restaurant with wonderful food that I will continue to visit!

It was still quite hot outside, so we opted to sit inside. We were taken up to the second floor and had a table with a nice view of the Schuylkill River. We ordered two appetizers - Nonna's Meatballs and the Crispy Eggplant. I almost always order meatballs if they are on the menu. The first bite of a meatball was a little disappointing-it had a harder texture with a chewier bite. I know everyone has different preferences, but I prefer a softer textured meatball. I expected marinara (didn't read the description - '...with a sage veal jus') and was surprised to see a shallow dark colored sauce. The sauce had an interesting taste - lots of flavor - if the beef and pork meatball had any flavor, it was overwhelmed by the sauce. I'll say I liked the sauce for 'a change', however, I would have preferred marinara. The next appetizer was much better - the Crispy Eggplant. The rectangular shaped cuts of eggplant had been coated with breadcrumbs and crispy shallots with a hint of lemon. There were two little containers of dill yogurt for dipping. The eggplant was fresh, the breadcrumbs combined with the crispy shallots made for a delicious coating! The dill yogurt was a wonderful dip. It was an excellent appetizer. For our entree, we ordered the Mushroom Zucchini pizza with fontina cheese, thyme, truffle oil and chili flakes (I somehow 'missed seeing' the chili flakes). I don't tolerate spice and would have excluded the chili flakes, but it was a very limited amount and the heat was fine (my partner likes a little heat and loved it). The pizza was divine - large, delicious mushrooms and thin slices of zucchini covered the top, the truffle oil gave it a special flavor and the fontina cheese reminded me why I love a good 'white pizza'! While the meal got off to a 'tough' start, it ended up nicely and we'll be back to try some of the pasta dishes!
