I've been here three times in the last few months so I thought I'd update my review. Twice I've had the chicken and waffles with the fried okra as a side. This is from the lunch menu that's served from 11 AM to 3 PM. I've been here twice during happy hour which starts at 3 PM on Thursdays. I had the grape Kool-Aid martini and the peach martini. First time at cornbread and the cornbread was great! Real friendly servers and fast service. I had the friend chicken with Mac and cheese and green bean. Also a cup of gumbo. Everything was good but the seasoning could be adjusted a bit (less salt in the green beans and more salt in the Mac). Overall, a good local place to support. read more

Cornbread Restaurant & Bar, formerly known as Beans and Cornbread was another hit among family and friends. I stopped in this weekend for a nice birthday dinner and everything we ordered tasted AMAZING. We order Fried Perch, Pork Chops, Fried Chicken, Catfish, Gumbo, Fried Green Tomatoes & a few additional sides. Sides we ordered included potato salad, green beans, collard greens, man n cheese, and of course cornbread! I would of given them 5 stars but I did have a few areas of growth for the business to help provide an even better experience. First, my initial impression speaking with a young lady name Destiny was NOT pleasant. I called to inquire about the average wait time on a Sunday for seating for 12, because they don't take reservations. She was very rude, and repeatedly told me, " if you want, come & put your name on the list! " (she wasn't being helpful though, it was in a very sarcastic and annoyed tone) I stated it was a few hours before I planned on having dinner but was just inquiring so I knew how long before to arrive. I honestly wanted to just pick another place after this interaction but I decided to still give them a try. Once we arrived the host Art, change my whole experience. He was very helpful and accommodating and did his best to accommodate our seating needs. Our waitress was also amazing! All of our food was accurate and fresh, they did however run out of a few items, which we had to substitute but that happens from time to time so in this case it wasn't a big deal. Cornbread Restaurant & Bar, could do some coaching on customer interaction and etiquette with some of its staff, to help provide an amazing experience consistently every-time. Needed to bring my new year in with my black eyed pet and collard greens. Service was great. Food was good but the portions were small. We barely got any corn bread. I wonder if it's because we came by less than an hour before closing. I'm glad they moved into a larger spot. I remember when they first launched years ago a few blocks away. read more

We just had an amazing experience at Cornbread. My husband had the Kitchen Sink I had the Bayou. Both were large portions. Our waitress was so friendly and knowledgeable. We left with the carrot cake and sweet potato pie. The restaurant, "black-owned" looked to be operating like a well-oiled machine. The greeter and hostess were very friendly. Mr. Owner you may not know it but there are 2 young ladies who are working together and preparing catering sides who are absolutely beautiful, respectful and focused on their work there. Cornbread, formerly known as Beans and Cornbread is the de facto leader in soul food cuisine in metro Detroit and has been for a while. They have a new, trendy location, which is cozy, and for the most part steadfast service is what you will find. Check their hours, they usually close by 8 at the latest. read more

Beans & Cornbread just updated their menu, so if you loved their meatloaf or yams, you're out of luck. Still what's left on the menu is great. I had the salmon croquettes this time, and they were delicious. The greens are good and made with smoked turkey, so they're good for folks who stay away from pork. The gumbo is solid, too, not chockfull of meat or vegetables, more like a soup. They no longer serve rice, so it won't be what many expect. The atmosphere here is good, and they do a fairly swift carry-out business. I've taken food home or delivered it to others after lunch, and it is always appreciated. read more

Very underwhelmed by this dining experience. Quite disappointed. In town for Detroit vs. Bears and wanted good soul food experience before heading out. This was a recommendation from a local so we headed over. Packed on Sunday afternoon. Only limited bar seating. We found a few open spaces and planted ourselves for soul food heaven. The bar maid was very personable and friendly. She was the highlight of our experience. Our food as order took f o r e v e r to be served; after a lengthy wait to place orders. Then it arrived lukewarm & incorrect. I initially ordered salmon croquettes only to be told they were out. Biggest pet peeve.... I changed my entree to blackened catfish. I've never had blackened catfish that tasted boiled. It was bland, lacking the crisp blackened flavor & seasonings, it was watery. The mac & cheese didn't WOW. The greens were ok. Portions were ok as well. The fried catfish could hv stood a seasoning blast. Yet, the prices were higher than giraffe goodies. The ambiance was decent, but I want to be fed, good food as well! This was our first time dining here since they moved and changed names. The interior is brighter with lots of windows, they can seat more people, and the food service is faster. Same great food. Our waitress was April. She was friendly and got all of our stuff to us fast. No complaints at all about the service. I haven't been to Beans and Cornbread since 2019 (Thanks Covid ). I forgot how much I loved their food. The size of the old restaurant was a deterrent, but I'm glad they're in a larger space. I'm looking forward to going more often now read more

This place was a cool place to have lunch on a rainy day! My mother and I were visiting from LA and came in on 6-23-23. The food was good and our server Jamie was very attentive and gave great suggestions on what to order. Would definitely go again if ever in town. Some of the best soul food in Detroit and I'm from Louisiana so that is saying a lot. Every time I go I happen to sit in LaTonyas section and she is the best! Always super courteous, knowledgeable, and polite. The food portions are huge and I always leave full. Just an overall great spot for a great meal at a great price. So we met with friends for a double date and thanks to a friends recommendation we chose Beans & Cornbread a Soulful Bistro located in Southfield. As we walked up they had someone at the door to open it and great you, that was a sure touch of class to what we hoped would be a great night and wonderful cuisine. Our server introduced herself, her name LaTonya and she was very sweet and charming lady who went above in beyond, with conversation, making sure we enjoyed our meal and we had drinks and anything else we needed. She made the overall experience a fantastic one. Big shout out to her. But now it's time for the real deal of any restaurant, how was the food! We ordered some drink specials they had to start with. We tried the Georgia Peach, the Lucky Charm & a Purple Rain (I had to as a huge Prince fan) they were all delicious and they didn't water down the liquor, cheers to the bartender. We ordered two of the Kitchen sinks, and a Bayou Combo with extra sides. While we waited with our drinks they served up warm cornbread that was good and helped absorb the liquors. The Kitchen Sink was a bit of everything as the name implies, grilled lobster, fried shrimp and catfish along with gumbo, collard greens, rice and friend okra. Every single part of this dish was delish, the greens are out of this world, on the sides we had some Hoppin John, red beans and rice, the green beans, Mac and cheese all of which was amazingly good! As for the Bayou combo that came with wings, rib tips and catfish. I must say I'm not a fan of catfish but Beans & Cornbread did a fabulous job and I ate every last piece. These dishes were huge and we were stuffed, but that didn't stop us from sampling their dessert menu. We shared peach cobbler and sweet potato pie and then combined them and it was off the chain. I haven't even been inside this place, but my husband went there to meet up with a friend and sent me the menu. I had him order me the Bayou Combo Plate (catfish, rib tips, and chicken wings with two sides and cornbread). I got the catfish fried and I ordered Mac and cheese and collard greens for the two sides. LET ME TELL YOU THAT EVERYTHING FROM THIS PLACE SLAPPED!! The cornbread is crumbly, the catfish is soft yet crunchy with the perfect cornmeal coating, the rib tips are tender and slightly charred, the macaroni was baked thicc and cheesy (definitely homemade!), and the collard greens were a little spicy with a chunk of meat in it. I'm sorry but I ate too much too quickly and didn't get the best pictures of the food, but trust in good faith that this place is WORTH checking out for yourself! read more

We tried this place for the first time for takeout during the pandemic and were very impressed with their handling of it. They had a great system that was efficient. I never review takeout from a sit down restaurant, because it isn't a fair representation of how the food is intended to be once it leaves the place in a box and travels anywhere. But, the takeout during the lockout was good enough we planned on returning to dine in when we could. Dining in was, of course, even better and I'm glad we did. The gumbo and catfish are great and, while my sides (potato salad and Mac & cheese) could have been better, the portions of everything were generous and the prices more than fair. The service was amazingly friendly and attentive and the staff was still taking better COVID precautions than anyplace else I have been. For starters, they automatically bring cornbread to the table which helps to explain the name of the place...it's just like Mamas. I had the special " oxtail over rice" it was my intent to have the "Southern Fried Turkey Chops" I'll get that next time I'm in town! The oxtail was delicious literally fall off the bone, gravy was flavorful. I got the greens with the Mac and cheese for my sides, the portions pretty big (I wasn't able to finish everything). Still orders peach cobbler to go (without seeing whether they had it on the menu) basically, if you ain't got PC on the menu at a restaurant called cornbread you ain't gonna last! The server "Cece?" The suggested tip of 20 percent was included in the bill however it seemed she'd hoped for more. I get the feeling sometimes as if patrons are expected to compensate more in a tip. Everything else was fresh and scrumptious. I normally don't eat all my food but I did there. The portions were fair for the price.
