I currently work in Newton Corner and with my lunch options being fairly limited due to the fact that there simply aren't that many places in the area, I have made my way to Corner Cafe quite a few times but mostly out of convenience since it's essentially twenty feet away from my office building. That being said, aside from convenience there isn't much else that's all that great about it. The service is cold, especially from the woman who works there who doesn't seem to care at all about customers, even repeat ones. She barely smiles and almost never thanks anyone. Her husband behind the stove is much nicer but doesn't interact with customers... As far as the food good, it's actually not bad - pretty good but nothing stellar. The selection is essentially breakfast goods, a few sandwiches and wraps, two soups, and a few salads. There aren't any hot lunches there but there's a few daily specials which mostly revolve around sandwiches and wraps. The owners being Greek, there's also a few Mediterranean-inspired dishes like their avgolemono (lemon-rice soup) and a gyro but that's about it. No spanakopita, no lamb or anything else. The avgolemono was okay but average however their salads and wraps are good; however their wraps somehow feel more like burritos because they are giant and aren't cut in half like everywhere else. Then comes a few negatives: first off, they are cash only. With services like Square, LevelUp and others making accepting card payments both more easily and affordable, this simply isn't acceptable in 2012. I mean c'mon guys... Seriously. And parking can be painful (doesn't really matter much in my case though, I walk there from my office). And their prices are all over the place. I once had a small soup, a salad and a Nantucket juice and the whole thing was $14 which I found hard to swallow considering that their salads are mostly iceberg and not even field greens. Their drinks are really expensive as a matter of fact. But it's not all negative, their bakes good are great, their omelettes pretty tasty and overall the food is good. If only their pricing made more sense and the service was friendly, I'd go more often, but the few places nearby are more appealing to me. Newton Corner is REALLY limited when it comes to places to grab a quick lunch, and most places are cash only. Corner Cafe is cash only, but that's the only downside in my book. The family that owns the business are so nice. It seems to be a husband and wife, and they were always so pleasant when I called to order lunch or ran in to grab a coffee in the mornings. The breakfast plates and sandwiches are out of control diner yummy. It is a must if you're hungry. You should really only order one if you're starved because you get a ton of food. If I get a sandwich here, it's usually a tuna sandwich on wheat with all veggies and hots, and it's always good. The BLT's are also good, and usually the go to for co-workers. They close after lunch time, around 3-ish, so make sure to get in early if you're hungry. read more

I just started working near here, and my coworkers recommended this place...though after giving it a few chances, I can't for the life of me understand why. It isn't a nice place to sit at all, and the food is *very* basic (almost more like cafeteria food) and yet, still quite expensive -- ten bucks for a "greek chicken salad" gets you iceberg lettuce, carrot shavings, a few cucumber slices, a piece of unseasoned grilled chicken and a single canned black olive. And a packet of super cheap "Greek" dressing and a plastic fork. I've eaten way better at truck stops, for real. (NOTE: I'm a glutard, so I haven't had the sandwiches -- or anything else -- salad is about all you can get here if you don't or can't eat bread.) The drinks and coffee on offer are also about as good as your local gas station, though at least the gas station takes credit cards...this place doesn't, and will get snitty with you if you don't know. Alas, this is not one of those really friendly "family" restaurants -- this is the kind where someone who looks like an older aunt of yours is surly and disapproving at you the whole time you're there. I'm guessing the appeal is simply due to the lack of other quick restaurants in walking-distance of the office parks around here, but seriously, if you do a little looking around or walk a block or two, you can do much better. There's a thai place around the corner where you can get delicious spring rolls and hot tea for cheaper than this sad elementary-school "salad" -- go there. :P read more

Perfect if you are staying at the Sheraton.. I prefer breakfast here.. its quick and you can have the cook make whatever you want.. name and he will cook it up.. Its nice and quaint... and best of all its a local business. So if you are a business traveler and need some good coffee, oj and breakfast made to your specification.. this is definitely the place to go. The bad: 1. Lady at the counter is seriously angry! No idea why? 2. They serve food in cheap paper plates with cheap plastic forks and knives! 3. Very stingy! You get one low quality napkin per meal! There is no condiments available. We asked for ketchup and the angry lady gave us one small pack! You get one paper plate per meal, so your toasts are placed on top of your omelet because there is no room for them on those tiny cheap paper plates 4. The entire environment makes you uncomfortable! there is an unpleasant feel in the air! Definitely not a place for a relaxing breakfast! The good: 1. Our omelet/egg were tasty! Corner cafe = Gas Station (a higher end like Wawa of course). Think community college cafeteria meets Gas Station. It's your super simple basic food payable by cash only. These places are necessary, not everything has to be super cool and delicious and perfect so nothing wrong with it. Sometimes you need a no nonsense place to eat at. I work very close to the Corner Cafe, so it seems like a go-to for a midday nosh or a snack. Sadly, I can't find the ability to like this place. The lady behind the counter is very grumpy and always makes me feel like I'm inconveniencing her by placing an order. A girl I work with says the wraps are very good, but I have a hard time getting past the surly staff to find the interest to try the food. This place is a ripoff. First off, the woman behind the counter is as pleasant as a scorching hot cup of coffee thrown in your face. I went in and ordered a garden salad with no dressing and a 16oz bottle of Poland Springs Sparkling water for $9.15. The salad had 2 small slices of cucumber, 2 olives, 6 pieces of shaved carrot and one tomato. What an absolute ripoff. This is the 2nd time I went in there. The first time I got a wrap and asked for avocado and they used guacamole instead. What if someone had an allergy to one of the ingredients in guacamole? Not to mention dealing with the not so pleasant woman is reason enough to steer clear. Next time I will brave the elements and walk to BHop. read more

I've eaten here on and off for the last 10 years, and it is a pretty reliable lunch place. Breakfast is also good if you don't mind an on-the-go meal. Don't be thrown off by the ambiance: it's a corner lunch spot serving mostly office workers in a rush. Breakfast meals are sizeable and tasty for the price paid. Try the Matt's Special (named for a co-worker). Lunch offerings are standard: sandwiches and salads. The roll-ups are hefty, and 2 people could split one. If you like soup, try the Avgolemmono (Greek lemon-chicken and rice soup); one of he best I have ever had. Don't be thrown by Dina's (owner) gruff manner; just give her a smile and she can be pleasant enough. Demitri is nice (other owner) and always says hello. the corner cafe is not awful. the food is pretty good. it's certainly true that newton corner lacks options for a quick lunch. but there are a few things that really leave me wanting something better. for starters, the place is cash only. seriously, get with the times. in a time when many quick service establishments are turning to online and mobile ordering, at least offer me the convenience of using my debit/credit card. the prices are also a bit silly. most of the sandwiches (the large sized especially) are reasonably priced, but the drinks and chips are not. not all of the sandwiches are, either. the first time i went to the corner cafe, i got the steak bomb. it wasn't bad. it was just steak, cheese, peppers, onions, and mushrooms. always a good combo. nothing daring. but the mushrooms came from a can, the peppers weren't cooked at all, and the steak wasn't very flavorful. the other day i had their reuben. i love reubens. it's super tough to make one disappointing. congratulations, corner cafe. by charging over $7, you set my expectations higher than you chose to meet. my sandwich contained almost no meet or sauerkraut. it was almost entirely cheese and russian dressing. the bread was tasty and toasted, but the overall experience was just lame. if the chips and drinks werent so expensive, id have been able to buy some and wouldnt have been so sad and hungry after finishing the sandwich. but that would've made the meal over $11. the quality is not that high. especially for a sandwich so lacking in all of its essential parts. somebody should show these homeys the studies that find customers are less likely to care and think about costs when paying by debit and credit. the fact that you force me to go to the atm and pay with cash almost requires my brain to analyze how much i end up spending for lackluster food. boo. read more

This place has good coffee and breakfast sandwiches. I was staying across the street at the Crowne Plaza and the only other alternative within walking distance was a Dunkin Donuts. Another businessman who is "smarter" than anyone else. I have 0 tolerance for retail places that don't accept credit/debit cards these days (especially one in the middle of Newton center) worse, there is no sign on the door, just a small one on the register. I had just left the gym and grabbed a bottle of water and was drinking it while I ordered my breakfast. I took out my card to pay and was told "cash only" I was told there was a bank down the block and I went out to spend 3 bucks to get cash for a 6 dollar breakfast. I never found the bank of Boston and went all the way around the block and spotted a citizens bank so I went there for cash. When I returned to the restaurant, a little annoyed, I said that they should probably make some bigger signs that say cash only since a lot of people don't carry cash these days. The owner (I think) came from around back and said the credit card companies charge him too much. I assured him the charge was nothing compared to the atm fee and inconvenience it caused me and he shrugged his shoulders. I then paid for my water and coffee (which had been poured already) and reminded him that the restaurant was empty and he should probably come up with ways to being more people in, not drive them away. These business owners trying to save themselves a few cents are losing lots of dollars in the process. I know I'm not the only who doesn't return to cash only places. read more
