It would be easy to miss this place, as it's off the beaten path. Great BBQ, better than the others I've tried in the OBX. Try the chicken, it's delicious. I agree with the other reviews though, don't expect indoor sit down seating, there are only a few picnic tables outside. The food (Pork BBQ sandwich and baked beans, potato salad, and coleslaw sides) where good, very good (4+ stars) but the fact they where out of chicken is ridiculous reconsidering it makes up more than half the menu. There's a chalkboard outside notifying folks 'open until 8 or until they run out of food', which would have been a fine place to notify customers they were out of the only other BBQ'ed meat they offered (and maybe also their remaining drinks). The sauces were also good, not too spicy to ruin your taste of the tender pork but flavorful enough you wanted to add it to everything you're eating! So to some up, the food was worth the drive but I just wished the guy taking your order showed a little gratitude that you're there to spend money and courtesy when telling you want you've ordered isn't available. read more

The atmosphere is great with outdoor seating only. The flies were rough during mid-day though. The wait wasn't very long, fortunately. We waited maybe 20 minutes with 4 orders before us. The barbecue pork sandwich and ribs were good, adding their classic sauce to it brought about more flavor. I'm more accustomed to a mustard barbecue sauce from the Carolinas, but it was a solid change. The macaroni salad was soooo good! The cornbread was moist and delicious. The baked beans were runny and included a surprise of lima beans. The cost was reasonable for any barbecue place but I might put it at $$ rather than $. Enjoy! read more

We got the burnt end sandwich, pulled pork plate, and a half rack of ribs. The ribs were really, really good, but everything else was just average. I'd had burnt ends before this, and they were outstanding. The sandwich here just tasted like pulled pork, nothing like the burnt ends I'd had previously. Mountain climbers tell the tale of when they first scaled Kilimanjaro, race car drivers discuss their adventures at Le Mans, and I, a BBQ junkie, tell the tale of the first time I sank my teeth into Corolla Village Barbecue. This is the best BBQ'd pork I have ever had. I think about it when I am not eating it. I inform other pork when I am eating it that its too bad it can never live up to Corolla Village Barbecue. Other pork should be ashamed and saddened that it never got to be smoked in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, because this is truly the zenith of pork BBQ in the entire culinary universe. I may not know a lot, but I DO know BBQ. Corolla Village makes authentic NC pulled pork. I did not try the chicken (why bother) or even the ribs (though I'm sure they are good.) I will get ribs when I am in Kansas City or Memphis. Chicken is not BBQ. Stick with what is best, and in NC, that is pulled pork, and this place does it right. The enormous Southern Pride smoker takes up much of the kitchen. Hickory logs are stacked in back. I have few rules in life, but one to which I adhere religiously is not to eat 'cue from a place that does not have a stack of wood on the premises. Sammies come in two sizes, and of course large is the better deal. The meat is moist, and has plenty of subtly-spiced bark and smoke ring mixed in with the creamy white bits. Sides we had were a sweet and cake-y corn bread and some VERY unique baked beans. Where most places use standard navy beans, CVB tosses in some local butter-beans (like baby limas) in a molasses-based sauce . Worth getting as a side.. Yes, seating is outside, and yes, there will be flies (duh!).. You are sitting outside in the woods eating stuff made with molasses !! Wave them away and enjoy. Be sure and eat your sandwich the authentic way (with the cole slaw right on top of the pork) and with a healthy dash of the VINEGAR-based sauce. Save the sweet and sticky sauce for your ribs (if you have room). IMO, this is the place to get an authentic NC pulled pork sandwich, and since they do it perfectly, why mess with anything else ? And the price is better than average. This is anything BUT a tourist trap. Actually, the best 'cue I have had in the OBX in the past decade and a half, and I have tried them all. read more

Read all the rave reviews and searched this place out on vacation last week. The ambiance is really cool as you are right next to a beautiful herb garden, under a large live oak tree, and situated in a 19th century village, but I am a barbecue fanatic and was totally underwhelmed. I understand that there are different styles of bbq and NC has it's own style, but whether you like vinegar based sauce, tomato based sauce, or no sauce at all, the key to good bbq is the SMOKE. I saw a big smoker in the kitchen and thought for sure they were going to do it up right. The guys there were really nice and told me all their stuff was great. I ordered the big pulled pork sandwich, which was reasonably priced and massive with slaw on it. My gf ordered a chicken platter with yams, potato salad and cornbread. I got the baked beans because I love trying bean variations. I tried the pulled pork for a full quarter of the sandwich without any sauce just to taste the natural smoke flavors. There literally were not any. I don't know what kind of wood they use, but they are not getting any smoke into the meat. It might as well have been put in the oven on 200 degrees and then pulled because it was smokeless. The chicken on the other hand was smoked to death and was dryer than a mummy. Literally almost inedible. THE SIDES (some saving grace): Yams-sweet as can be Cornbread-super sweet and so soft I wonder if it even went through the cooking process, nonetheless delicious Potato Salad-small chunks of potato and massive globs of mayo with mild seasoning, seriously gross Baked Beans-a light shining in the darkness. The mixture of lima and pinto with thick smokey molasses literally saved the meal. I recommend this place for the ambiance, but fighting flies off failure food is not my cup of hogs blood. read more

All I can say is....wow! Amazing bbq, if you get here late in the afternoon to will be out of luck, because they will be sold out! Having 4 smokers myself, I enjoy trying to find good local BBQ when on vacation. In a nutshell, this place had not bad BBQ. The pulled pork was just that, pulled pork. It was not smokey and no rub flavor. Didn't suck, tastes good. Just missing some elements I look for in True BBQ. The ribs had a very light smoke flavor. Hint of rub flavor. Still moist, but too (over done) fall off the bone. Could eat them with a fork. True BBQ doesn't "Fall" off the bone. They were decent tasting. Now the cornbread. More like corn cake. Very cakey like Sarah Lee made it. But very tastey. The vinegar sauce was awesome and gave the pulled pork great flavor. However the rib/chicken suace tasted like ketchup and sugar. Not very good. It was aight. You order your food inside a little "shack," then you eat outside on picnic tables. Here is what we ordered with comments... Ribs- tender, fall off the bone. However, there really wasn't much smoke flavor. The taste was dominated by the amount of rub they use. Pulled Pork- the pulled pork was pulled pork. Nothing to write home about. They were $4.50 for a small, and $5.50 for a large. This does not include sides. Chicken- dry, needed sauce. Baked Beans- they use at least two different beans to make their baked beans. They were good, but not great. Potato Salad- I don't recommend. Corn bread- very good... Playground- there is a very nice little playground adjacent to this BBQ place. It's great for some post meal fun for kids 10 and under. All in all it was an average lunch. I would not go back, at least not with the expectations that I got from other Yelpers. Pulled pork: tender and delicious. Soaks up their amazing vinegar sauce like a sponge. Ask for extra. BBQ chicken- comes whole and uncut with a spice rub. Falls off the bone tender. Stopped by here purely based on Yelp reviews...driving by it looks like a shady little shack next to a playground. I was not disappointed! My wife eats only Carolina BBQ and she loved the pulled pork - should have gotten the sandwich though, but the plate was GINORMOUS. I went with the combination plate, and it disappeared with breathtaking speed. Between the two plates and sides it was more than enough to feed a family of three (my six year old devoured their chicken). The sides were also quite good, and being no culinary expert can only hope that they were home made? The potato salad, on a hot Saturday afternoon, was more cool and refreshing than my cold soda! The cole slaw was awesome, and the beans were tasty. Cornbread? Delicious. Upside for families, there's a playground a stone's throw away. Upside for folks coming back from beach driving, there's an air compressor station with multiple taps to refill your tires...also a stone's throw away. Don't hesitate if you're looking for some good 'cue! And kokua the chickens. :D read more

Probably the best BBQ I had on the OBX (and I've had a lot of it). Ribs are tender but lack smoke flavor as John K mentioned. I, on the other hand, had plenty of rub taste and it was pretty good. What I disliked was the fact that they didn't cook the ribs long enough to render all of the fat. The sauce is also quite nice - vinegar based but with enough sweetness to counterbalance and the addition of rosemary is really interesting and worked well. The pulled pork was tender, flavorful and matched the sauce well. Didn't try any sides. I'd definitely go back. Note: it's not easy to find from NC-12. It's to the left of the Post Office in Corolla, back a ways off of the main road (behind the Twiddy at the back end of their parking lot; a white shack-like place). read more

The restaurant is simple, a set of picnic tables under some trees and a window from which your entree is served. However, the bbq was so delicious, that I smiled when I finished and thought that eating there was the best thing I had done all week. I had the chicken and rib platter with a side of coleslaw and bbq beans. Let me just say that the beans are tremendous, lima and pinto beans slathered in a molasses sauce. Absolutely exceptional!! I wasn't amazed by the chicken, but the ribs were mighty tasty, especially slathered in sauce. The corn bread was a trip in itself and extremely sweet and cakelike. From what we learned from other diners, this restaurant is authentic bbq and owned by locals, so they are not just trying to gauge the tourists out of their money and make a profit, they serve good bbq for the masses. The location is awesome, by the way, in the middle of Corolla Heritage Village (and the cutesy stores) and in front of the natural garden. Wasn't too impressed with this BBQ. We called ahead to order and then picked up. I wasn't thrilled with the selection of sides to begin with. I had hoped for macaroni and cheese but they didn't offer it. I had the 1/4 piece of BBQ chicken with potato salad and candied yams. The potato salad was very runny and didn't seem to have many actual potatoes in it. I also wasn't a fan of how the yams were cooked. Thought they'd be sweeter. The chicken was alright; a little dry though. The best item this place offered was the cornbread...absolutely delicious! Price wasn't bad at all. I just wasn't a fan. Hole in the wall, hands down best NC BBQ around! Excellent pulled pork and rib racks. The roasted chicken is superb too. Don't expect to sit down, the dining area consists of picnic tables under a tree bit don't let that stop you. Baked beans and macaroni salad make for excellent sides. Barbecue was excellent! We had the burnt ends sandwich with coleslaw on top. Even the picky ones in the bunch enjoyed it. The meat was well seasoned and smoky. You can try three different sauces each of which added a nice flavor dynamic. The coleslaw was crisp with bright flavors. For sides we had the baked beans, potato salad and macaroni salad. I've been down the outer banks for the past week and I've tried all the BBQ I could; BJs on the way in on 158 which was great, and duck deli which was a joke to call BBQ. Corolla village's BBQ was hands down the best. I only got the pork BBQ with a side of their vinegar sauce and a piece of cornbread that all the yelpers were raving about. The cornbread was good but the BBQ was probably the best I've ever had. It didn't have the smokey flavor that many look for in Carolina BBQ but the pork was juicy and tender and the sauce was on point. I won't be back in obx until next summer but when I get back I will be returning to corolla village barbecue for sure, and trying out the rest of the menu. read more

This is a perfect quick lunch. Cheap food that is really good and comes out super quick. We stopped in after doing some paddleboarding and sat at the picnic tables since we were still wet. Overall easy and good read more
