Thanks to restaurant week, I tried my first fine dining Mexican spot. At first, I was scared the portions will be small but that was a worthless worry. The food was good and the portions were perfect! I don't think I ever seen the wait staff this attentive. I mentioned to my friends that I need to go to the restroom to wash my hands. Our waitress overheard me and came over and asked "do you know, where is the restroom?" and afterwards she guided me to the restroom. Talk about being attentive and helpful! We ordered: Appetizers: SUMMER AVOCADO SQUASH SMOKED SALMON EVERYTHING BAGEL TOSTADA Entree: PEKIN DUCK ENMOLADAS RIBEYE AU POIVRE, CHILE MIXE (comes with complimentary guac and tortillas, so you can cut the meat to pieces and have mini tacos) creative right! There were definitely some highlights at Cosme. The space is beautiful, and our waiter was wonderful. He was warm, knowledgeable, and explained everything beautifully. The standout of the meal was the cooked scallop dish with pineapple butter, which was absolutely scrumptious and genuinely one of the best things I've eaten in a long time. Unfortunately, the rest of the food was pretty underwhelming. Nothing was bad, but aside from the scallops, nothing felt particularly memorable or special, especially given the prices. I also had a spicy margarita that was perfectly fine, but again, at this price point I expected more. I also had a strange interaction with one of the hostesses that colored the experience a bit. When we were being taken to our table, she seemed noticeably put out by having to carry my water over, which is a pretty standard hospitality gesture. Her overall demeanor just wasn't particularly warm or friendly. It was a small moment, but at a restaurant like this, those details matter and can shift how you feel about the whole experience. Cosme is a Michelin guide Mexican fine dining restaurant located in the heart of flatiron. We did the prix fixe for a larger group and the event planner was super helpful in setting up our logistics. Started with herb guacamole and corn tostadas, a clean and bright opener. The hiramasa tiradito with Sorrento lemon was delicate and citrus forward, while the heirloom tomato tlayuda came piled high with peppery greens, ayocote beans, and yellow peppers on a blue corn base. Reminded me of a Mexican pizza. Ensalada de la casa rounded out the starters. For mains, the mole de la casa reminded me of sweet potato in bbq (in a good way). The branzino was charred with a caper and beurre monte sauce that balanced richness and acid. Duck carnitas came with pickled watermelon radish and salsas on the side. The mains were my favorites. Dessert was just as thoughtful. The canela opera cake paired coffee ice cream with cinnamon spiced layers, and the cornhusk meringue was a lighter, more textural finish, airy and lightly spiced. Cosme has been on my list since forever ago for their corn meringue! We went for a weekday dinner and the restaurant wasn't super full-- feels like you could walk in without a wait. I loved their flower arrangements and felt like the overall vibe was very modern. Duke carnitas ($120 but feeds 2 people): wow this duck was so good. it's fall apart and truly does have that melt-in-your-mouth texture. However, I would've liked it even more if it had a crispy skin. It comes with fresh purple corn tortillas (some of the best I've ever had, super chewy and delicious!) and a trio of sauces. To be honest I thought the duck was a little overpriced for what it was because other than the perfectly cooked duck, the rest of the condiments were fairly normal and uninspired. At this price point I need some creativity in the flavors in addition to immaculate execution. Corn meringue was interesting because the cream is predominantly salty while the meringue provides most of the sweetness. I can't say I'm the biggest fan, but I do appreciate the innovation. Likewise, I think the flavors were quite minimal and could've used more creative manipulation. They gave us complimentary cookies that were quite good. A fantastic meal overall with solid, quick service - the only downside is the cost. We had a 630pm reservation on Thursday, and were seated quickly upon arriving. It was already lively in the modern, open space. We were greeted quickly and the server walked us through the menu. While they have timeless staples, other items are more seasonal. We got a few drinks, a small plate, and two of their mains: the branzino and the duck carnitas; and two desserts. Everything tasted great - favorites were the Tlaloc Old Fashioned cocktail among the drinks...and as far as food, pretty much everything we ordered lol. The smoked salmon tostada, the branzino, the duck carnitas, and the two desserts we enjoyed - but definitely the hazelnut flan over the cornhusk meringue. I am updating my review for Cosme because we visited yesterday, February 12th, for a Restaurant Week dinner, and we were treated terribly. It was a bizarre and deeply disappointing experience. Despite having a reservation, the hostess told me in an incredibly rude tone: 'I'll give you the table, but I need it back by 7:00.' I was stunned. This isn't a McDonald's; it's Cosme. I don't understand the attitude of trying to kick us out before we've even sat down. Those are comments you make--politely--to someone without a reservation, but this woman was the worst and ruined the evening from the moment we walked in. Once seated, I asked the server for the Restaurant Week menu, only to be told that because of how I booked, it was 'dining' and the special menu didn't apply. While the server tried to help by looking for another table, he couldn't find anything. He called over the manager, who was also quite unpleasant and flatly refused to either serve us the Restaurant Week menu or relocate us. We ended up leaving because the whole vibe was just wrong. I am a regular at Cosme and visit frequently, which makes this treatment even more heartbreaking. What a huge disappointment. I asked them to please show me where in the app it stated that I had to book a separate reservation for Restaurant Week. The manager showed me that when selecting a time, there are table types listed below in nearly illegible font, and one of them simply said 'Restaurant.' Just that one word! Who is supposed to guess that 'Restaurant' excludes you from the special menu? It's misleading, and I'm sure it happened to many others. This is unacceptable; this is not the level of service one expects in New York. The pictures are from other times I had been there. The owners need to talk to their employees, the host really was the worst, the look in her face telling us that of course it was clear how to reserve the table in such a rude way. Worst service. First time going to Cosme. Restaurant has a very chill and modern vibe. Clearly a popular place in the neighborhood. Menu is a more curated menu and dishes are meant to be shared. We ordered three small plates and two medium plates to share which were plenty especially if you enjoy the tortillas that come with most dishes. The staff is friendly and does a regular check-in to make sure we have everything we need. Dinner service is efficient as we finished our dinner within an hour and fifteen minutes. Having said that, if you are the type that wants to hang around and take your time, you will probably feel a bit rushed. Food is generally delicious and recommendations from staff are good. Everything tastes fresh especially the tortila. Flavors are less traditional but still very good. We ordered the guacamole to start which I highly recommend. We also ordered the Hiramasa (shrimp ceviche like dish), fluke, scallops, and grilled octopus. The scallops are definitely less traditional as it is paired with a fruit based sauce which makes it a bit sweeter - not everyone likes the pairing. Absolutely unbelievable. The ambience was moody and intimate with a low-lit, modern design. You're immediately sucked right in. The food was inventive, fresh, and bright. Best steak I've ever had. Came here for dinner on a Wednesday night. We had a reservation and were seated right away. We ordered the guacamole, uni tostada, scallop, octopus, romanesco, duck carnitas, and grilled sea bass. My favorites were the octopus and romanesco (I can't find a menu online so I don't remember the exact dish name). The flavors on every dish were very tasty and 4 of the dishes came with tortillas, so we were stuffed by the end. Staff really makes the restaurant scene for me and I loved how complimentary they were to my questions. Portion size was a downfall but I get it. However, I felt the food was just OK... The ambience was nice, very New York with a hint of Mexico City vibes. We ordered the wild morel mushroom tlayuda, fluke tostada, pork belly, long island striped bass, peking duck enmoladas, affogato flan and cherry sorbet. The ambiance was dark and moody, just right for a date night or drinks with friends. The servers and staff were kind but they kept forgetting to bring our drinks that we ordered. We also asked multiple times for shareable plates but they also kept forgetting that. Part of this was because they were very busy. We liked the food. Ate here during restaurant week. Knocking them off a star because their Instagram advertised "squash al pastor" & I called ahead to confirm this as I'm vegetarian. The waiter told me that I could do the two vegetarian salads (one being avocado summer squash) so that one is the salad one is the main. Place is cozy and not overly loud. read more

What better day to visit Cosme than Cinco de Mayo? First off, the staff was very nice and knowledgeable, despite the hectic nature of the holiday. The ambiance was awesome, as it was dimly lit but still full of life. The margarita and wine pairings went well with the food. The scallops (a seafood favorite of mine) were DIVINE, with pieces of pineapple adding a flavor I never had on scallops before. The mole, while unspectacular and overpriced, did taste good. The star of the show is certainly the duck carnitas. The duck comes so well seasoned and cooked, that it falls apart to easily fit in a taco (and it is not chewy at all). I was also pleasantly surprised by the tasty texture of the duck skin, as I usually find skin too chewy and slimy (unless fried). There are some dishes on the menu that won't do anything to wow you, especially at their price points. But the scallops, the duck carnitas, their "stand outs" definitely do stand out for tasting AMAZINGLY. I hope to come back and try the dessert, which I have read is really good. If you want high end Mexican food that differs from your normal Mexican cravings, this is certainly the place to go (although the price point is very different than other equally as delicious taco spots around NY). read more

I had the octopus and it was incredible -- so tender and flavourful and it also comes with corn tortillas on the side. First, why the eff is this place so dark? Did a black hole take up residence inside and decide it liked paying NYC rent prices? Seriously, the interior is darker than Satan's crotch. It isn't dim, it isn't candlelit, it isn't ambient--it is just a graveyard for light. It's darker than Elon Musk's web browser history. I've climbed caves miles under the Earth's crust that were brighter than this restaurant. Second, the food is overpriced mediocrity. To call it "elevated Mexican" is an insult to both Mexicans and elevators. I came with a group of friends, so we shared everything family-style. The Uni Tostada was okay, but nothing I haven't had from a million other tasting menus, upscale Japanese/Korean spots, etc. Conversely, the Tataki al Pastor was probably our best dish, and the fish was perfectly prepared. The Carrot Tlayuda wasn't bad, but it was too heavy on sauce and cheese, and oversalted. The Mole de la Casa was disappointingly bland; I'm sure it took forever to make, but someone at the end of the assembly line apparently forgot to add any seasoning. And the much-touted Duck Carnitas--the main reason we came here--was a joke. Don't get me wrong, the duck was well made, and I have no complaints about the tortillas. But come on! $112 for a serving of, maybe, six tacos at best? You people realize you could have, like, THREE actual whole Peking ducks--perfectly marinated and roasted--for the same price at any decent Chinese restaurant? FFS with this pretentiousness. The only bright spot--and I mean that both figuratively and literally, given the aforementioned cavern of blackness we dined in--was the famous Cornhusk Meringue dessert. Of course, at $22 per plate, it had better be good. Or...You could go to, say, Konban and get their gorgeous Corn Ice Cream dessert (which takes just as much, if not more, skill to make) for $13. Obligatory libation mention: I wasn't really interested in dropping another $20+ to sip a teeny-tiny cocktail in pitch blackness, so I shared the Cherry Smash mocktail, which was decent. I'm sure Cosme was the bees knees way back when, but the version I experienced recently feels like a faded beauty queen that's long worn out her welcome. Also, turn on some damn lights. read more

Restaurant Week 2025...or rather not. Also, menu is a bit different than what is listed online and changes frequently it seems. I went to this dimly lit Mexican spot earlier in the evening with a large group for Restaurant Week though it turned out it was going to be the regular menu as said menu is only served at the bar. The people in front weren't the friendliest and the service was not very good with the guy going away frequently among other issues. They gave us some chips which were a bit more cooked than usual being on the way to being burnt along with some salsa macha which I like a lot more than the usual salsas you find in other spots. Said smoky salsa macha was well spiced though not as smokey as some other spots and it was a tiny bowl but we asked for more and the busboy got us extra which wasn't charged. They oddly did not give us plates and judging by the slightly sticky table (yes this is clearly a spot which can charge $22-$50+ for everything,) I guess others eat the chips on the table. The busboy eventually gave us some plates which helped. I started with the Long Island Stripped Bass for $32 with yuzu and white corn aguachile. The portion of the fluke was decent and the fish was good quality but this was the only good part of this dish. There was plenty of corn and it had a light citrus note presumably from the yuzu but the broth was extremely bland outside of the citrus. Aguachile is supposed to have a good bit of spice to it but this was even less spiced or spicy than most ceviche being flavorless outside of the citrus note. Another person had the Ensalada de la casa which was $20 and another had the Guacamole for $23. From the smaller plates, I shared the Tlayuda for 40(!) which is listed online with wild morel mushrooms, chile poblano, and pecorino but in person had chanterelles instead of morels with there also being some onion jam, a lettuce variant, and nopales/cactus. The portion size was decent but the biggest issue here was the amount of mushrooms. I love chanterelles with them being my favorite mushroom but there was perhaps 4 or 5 of them in the entirety of the dish which is ridiculous. Otherwise, it was a bit sweet from the onion though the cactus and lettuce helped with a bit of bitterness. This was alright but not close to worth it for the price point. Another person had the $32 octopus which they seem to enjoy. My main dish was regrettably the Grilled Branzino for $45 listed as being with Eckerton farm tomatoes and tamarindo but instead, it had a mix of tomatoes and tomatillos with there being a slightly sour salsa presumably also made from tomatillos with all the main dishes served with a lot of tortillas. The deboned branzino was cooked fine but it lacked any crispy skin with the only crispy part being the tail at the end. It was also rather bland compared to other fancier Mexican spots like Covacha or otherwise where the fish is not just moist but also well marinated. The salsa was light and the vegetables were good quality along with the fresh tortillas. This was OK but certainly not worh the price point or close. Another person had the Mole De La Casa for $36 which she enjoyed. I didn't bother with dessert though they gave us some Mango pâte de fruit with some Tajin as a petit four which was a nice touch. I tried someone else's Cornhusk Meringue for $22 which is their signature as she was getting full. The meringue on the outside is standard with the corn flavor becoming stronger and stronger the further you go into the dessert with the middle being the tastiest part. It was good and honestly the highlight of the night. Two others had the Guava Chocolate Cake for $22 where they found the cake moist but the guava flavor a bit lacking. Outside of someone else's dessert, I have just way too many issues with this place to recommend it. The food was overpriced for the quality, the service wasn't good, and this was the blandest tasting Mexican food I've had in the city for ages. The only thing with any semblance of flavor was the salsa macha and the fact that I think that Rosa Mexicano has better food than this junk says enough. There's places where you can pay 1/4th the price and get better food and if you're going to pay this much for Mexican, save it for actually good restaurants such as Claro, Covacha, Quique Crudo, and others. 0.7 read more

Tried to have a restaurant week dinner here but were disappointed to learn that only bar reservations are served the restaurant options, not dining room reservations. We stuck around for regular dinner and had a nice time regardless. It's been a few years since I'd dined here so I was curious to try the new menu offerings (and return to delicious classics). We chose several appetizers to share before the duck carnitas main arrived. I wasn't able to dissuade my party from ordering the guacamole which I remember being only average, and was slightly vindicated when it was tried and everyone agreed with my original assessment. The salsa does elevate the avocado with herbs but I stand by its skipability. The scallops with pineapple butter on the other hand, we could not get enough of. If they had served us a bowl of that pineapple butter by itself, we would've licked the container clean. The Maine uni tostada left us with a weird taste in our mouths. I thought it was just me because I don't tend to like the unctuous feeling of bone marrow but even the rest of the party who loved bone marrow didn't enjoy the strong, almost gamey flavor. The fingerling potato tamal with cheddar sauce was a unique, comforting bite. I was not as blown away by the duck carnitas as I'd hoped to be given the fun description the server provided (and high price tag), but it was enjoyable and good for sharing. The stars of the show for me were the desserts. The pecan tamal hit every high note, from the crunchy pecans to the earthy corn masa to the ice cream that added just the right amount of sugar. Celebrated my husband's birthday here and wowee $$$$. The food was good but the staff are like seagulls grabbing your empty dishes--it's a little too intense. My husband got really annoyed by that, we felt like we were going to lose an eye to the swarm of arms grabbing things before the other person was done eating from their own plate. Cosme thinks it has the answer: an NYC-sized helping of hubris, the kind of "fuck you" energy that is equal parts intoxicating and infuriating, luxury and lunacy. $23 guacamole, $30 esquites, a $24 spicy margarita, and duck carnitas for $112. Walls the color of wet cement, dimly lit by torch sconces. An intricate ballet of six solicitous male waiters. This vibe attracts a certain clientele: rudely, finance bros and their floozies, or (in my case) peons on a special occasion. All this chutzpah writes checks that Cosme's food mostly cashes: the esquites with their shishito-infused cream sauce were a special favorite. Great guacamole, a convincing story about Oaxacan maize flown in this week to make the accompanying tortilla chips. A strange but delightful cornhusk meringue - sour, creamy, not too much sugar. But the service was rough: there was an excruciating, unapologetic 45-minute wait between appetizers and main courses, and a waiter who timed out of his shift an hour into our 7:30 dinner reservation. The minutes droned on, no food came out, and Cosme's pretensions began to seem less cheeky and more audacious. Loved the food, drinks, ambiance, and service. We started with the Cadillac margarita and the prickly pear cocktail. The Cadillac was a great margarita and really enjoyed it. The prickly pear drink was very refreshing and not too sweet. The starter tostada with the sauces was really delicious. Especially loved the orange spicy one. We ordered the cauliflower tamal and the duck carnitas. The tamal was delicious. I loved the take on cauliflower many ways and it was vegan! The duck was really good. I loved the blue corn tortillas. The salsas were also delicious and I loved the vegetables. The duck was a bit dry in some spots. Super flavorful and loved the skin. This was enough food for two people. We had the meringue for dessert. This was a great dessert. Not too sweet and I loved the concept. The espresso dessert drink was also great. Would definitely recommend. We sat at the bar and the service was flawless. The bartender we talked to was so nice and even let us try the mandarin oranges with work salt with a shot mezcal only found at their restaurants. Been to Cosme three times now, hoping it would finally click but it hasn't. Both the food and service have been consistently disappointing. The last visit was especially bad: during Restaurant Week, we were seated right next to the door while it was about -15°C outside. It was freezing the entire meal. Despite multiple empty tables inside, they refused to move us, because "we were on the cheap menu" according to both the manager and hostess. Apparently, if you don't pay full price, you're expected to shiver through dinner. Not worth the hype or the attitude! read more

I have no clue why this place only has a 3.5 star average - I lived in Mexico City and the food here is phenomenal (and service)! Definitely a good place for any occasion. We started with a guacamole, which was absolutely delicious. We also had the fish tostada dish to start, but honestly, it's not a must. The flatbread made out of tostada with the carrot tppings was also very good. The highlights for me were definitely the fish tacos as well as the mole. Wow! For dessert, we had the corn husk (I wasn't a fan) and the guava chocolate cake, which was fantastic. I also had a hot chocolate because chocolate overdose is always a good idea. Respectfully, WTF! I was that told that their Duck carnitas would be life changing, and had an "okay, sure" moment. Then, I put them in my mouth. Madre de dios...they are THAT good. En tu boca, ahoramis! Our bartender, Cesar, introduced my friend and I to one of the smoothest tequila blancos I've ever tried (Lalo) after enjoying some spicy margaritas and banter. It helped that we were seated at the bar which made for a cozy dining experience without the pressure of turning over a table. Just please get some purse hooks for us bag carrying peeps. read more

Heard about this spot from some friends, and had to check it out because the duck carnitas sounded delicious. After some difficulty finding reservations, we finally found something for a 9pm dinner. The restaurant was packed, and people still continued to be seated even as we ate, which was wild. The decor is great, and it feels very modern with classic NYC dim-lighting vibes. We got the guac, fluke tostada, striped bass, and (ofc) the duck carnitas. The guac, while quite pricey, was delicious, and I was a big fan of the additional sauces that got served with it. The fluke was a bit salty imo, but the tostada was crunchy and had great texture. The bass was fine, nothing to really write there and I wouldn't really recommend it. The carnitas, though, is definitely the star of the show. It's rich, fatty, and theres a sizeable portion of meat, but they include onions and pickled veggies to really cut that richness and fat from the duck. Adding in some of the sauces they provide, this dish was by far the best. We also got some desserts, and the cornhusk merengue is a must-try. Great corn flavor, light and airy, and just the right amount of sweetness. Definitely recommend this one. read more
