    Torta with chicken
    Lynne P.

One hot Sunday found us looking for geocaches but failing pretty miserably (the gamelands were closed) so we decided to pivot & grab dog snacks at Petco (I LOVE this particular Petco) and then went looking for lunch. We stumbled across Costa & decided to give 'em a try. And I am glad we did! Not only was the service impeccable but the cheese dip silky smooth, my Pepsi expertly mixed and our food came out hot and tasty. Bestie had the Birria tacos with rice and I chose to grab the Torta sandwich with chicken as my protein and fries. I had never had a Torta sandwich before and it was delicious! The veggies tasted & smelled fresh, the chicken had a savory flavor with the bread taking the starring role. It was pillowy soft on the outside with with a lovely toasted crunch on the inside. As delicious as our lunches were I was somewhat surprised they weren't busier than the 2 other tables. It was 1pm on a Sunday & traffic to the beach was an indication that folks just wanted to get to the beach where we were just trying to escape it. Bestie's birria tacos looked so fresh that I was half tempted to reach across the table and grab one and I don't even like birria meat! My fries were similar to Rally's with that crunch coating but the fry still maintaining its pillowy innard. I would come back here just for those fries & cheese dip. And the service was worth noting because nowadays, service just isn't what it used to be. Our server checked on us multiple times without being suffocating, gave us the time to peruse the menu and answered all of our questions with genuine concern for our dining experience. As usual, I brought home most of my lunch, snacked too hard on the chips (iykyk) and would normally offer leftovers up to hubby. That was not the case today as I told bestie "he was on his own tonight" because I was NOT sharing. And I had those leftovers approximately 2 hours after they were still yummy. My bread still soft, not soggy, the fries just needed a little air fryer pick me up and I was good to go. Bestie said if she hadn't eaten so many chips prior to being served, she wouldn't have taken as much home as she did. If you find yourself at the beach craving some tacos, beer, burritos or excellent customer service, drop in. You won't regret it. And next time we hit them up, I'm having the birria tacos! Oh, restaurant was CLEAN, as were the restrooms and no errant fly or misplaced trash anywhere. Bestie & I were quite impressed with everything about this little restaurant and are looking forward to going back.....in the winter time!

Rolling through Surf City on a warm Spring day meant lots of people and no places that weren't packed that bestie and I could grab a meal so we started researching where to go nearby. We discovered Costa Tacos & Beer and figured hey you can't go wrong with Mexican food! Our waitress was friendly and very attentive. The food came out quickly and was the perfect temp. The salsa and queso were flavorful and made me fill up too quickly on chips and dip! But I made a little room for my Birria tacos and Mexican rice. The Birria wasn't too spicy but still well seasoned. The Mexican rice required a little salt but other than that it was also yummy. We will add this as a must stop when we are in the area!

Always consistent and delicious. Go to taco spot in Surf City, especially with the lack of options nearby.

The birria ramen was the worst I've ever had. Genuinely tastes like watered down beef broth.

This place is a vibe. All relaxation and good times only. The decor is great and will have you constantly finding new things to look at. It's for sure overstimulating in a good way. Comfortable seating outside where you have protection from the sun and cute lighting at night. You walk in and then go to a walk in cooler that has all the drink options. There's non alcoholic, beers galore, THC drinks (must be a big thing in NC), ciders, and some other canned concoctions. You grab what you want and head to the register. If you are staying and grab more than one, they have to hold it for you as your second round. You can only have one open drink per person. There is a $10 minimum on purchases. Once your drink is secured, you then find a spot to perch. There's indoor and outdoor options. It was rainy when we went and we were able to find a spot that was covered. This is a super chill place. Worth coming with a group or alone. You will be chilled! They do have bathrooms, merch, and some machines to play. Super nice employees too!!!

The bartender finally took our food order about 20 minutes later. The two drinks were over $25, despite us not ordering top-shelf and getting very little alcohol in either one. When we were asked if we wanted another round, I declined and asked for water instead. Another 30 minutes went by with no food and, more importantly, still no water. We eventually asked the hostess if we could sit at one of the three empty tables. We then waited another 15 minutes for our appetizer and approximately 20 more minutes for our meal. We finished eating and still hadn't been checked on. We never received the water I had requested. I eventually had to get up and go to the bar myself to get it. The bartender then brought us the check, and I mentioned that I was still waiting for the water. By this point, we were extremely frustrated. Not once during our meal did anyone check on us. The only time someone came back to the table was to take payment and clear the dishes--we were already finished and didn't need anything by then. We ended up spending 1 hour and 55 minutes there for two people sharing an appetizer and a steam pot. That's a ridiculous amount of time for that amount of food, especially considering how much of that time was spent waiting for someone to take our order, bring water, bring our food, or simply check on us. The food was good, but the service was some of the worst we've experienced. We place a huge value on good service, and when you can't even get a glass of water or have someone check on you during your entire meal, it really takes away from the experience. Great food doesn't make up for nearly two hours of waiting and virtually no service.

We had met with at best limited success. This year, I found The Velvet Anchor Bottle Shop online and have been following on FB since February. The Velvet Anchor Bottle Shop rocks. Nick was behind the bar on our first visit. Nick was super. He was massively informed about a ton of beer from the Carolinas and further afield. They had a sweet selection of beer from Germany, Great Britain, and Japan. I even saw a 12-pack of Bud-lite hidden away. There are eight taps with a mead and cider on tap. We got there at 1 pm and there were dead, so we grabbed Nick. We talked about local places to go and Big Ten Football. Nick went to Indiana, and I attended Ohio State. When things picked up, everyone was a local, which we thought rocked. We socialized with all sorts of folks, and after two beers, we were off to the beach to have a delightful afternoon with some great beer. The Velvet Anchor is not a large place, two 4-tops, a 2-top, and maybe 10 stools. They did a fair amount of to-go business. This is not the place for children and large groups. But if you and your significant other want a quiet, friendly place to try some great beer, or want to take some back to your place, this location is a gem. We liked it so well that we took our two friends back later in the week.
