Should have done more research before coming here…read more Grocery poke is surprisingly good in Hawaii, so tried to find the nearest supermarket near our hotel in Kauai. Our lunch on Day 3 had been a bust, so decided to eat in more and get needed supplies. I knew that Safeway was affiliated with Albertson's, which I THOUGHT owned Foodland (which has great poke)...so came here and bought other stuff (cause we were already there). Later found out that my assumption was incorrect. The employees here are tired of tourists, I think. The woman at the seafood counter (which has a small poke section), acted like she was doing me a favor when I asked for the rest of the fresh hawaiian style poke. When I asked how good the from-frozen ahi poke was, she mumbled something unintelligible. Cashiers don't have to be friendly but should be at least respectful, and appear as if trying The lane was open, so it wasn't too busy. She barely acknowledged us but did scan each item without being asked (and we were self self bagging). But then there was a pause to push the process to start the payment process. Then another long pause after I had entered my credit card. Then another pause to print receipt. Then finally after printing, she grabbed the receipt without looking at it and just stuck out her hand AT me to grab without looking at me. The last two actions were happening while she was having a funny (to her) conversation with a co-worker. Not good when two employees together are acting like this without shame. A part of me wanted to lightly slap her receipt-holding hand and tell her "Didn't your mama teach you manners?". Purchases: -- 2 bagels ($1.19 each) -- small Lucerne milk ($2.89) -- small cream cheese ($5.99) -- fresh (not frozen) ahi tuna ($29.99 per pound, paying $21.29). -- six pack can of Maui Brew Mango Beer ($14.99 with Dep fee of $0.30 -- PB Blondie Bestie ice cream from Ben and Jerry, pint for $4.99 (normally $8.99 but on sale so very good price...needed to download the Safeway app since my Von's or Albertson's card doesn't work...had good free wi-fi in store).

Not as fresh as what we had for lunch at one of the country clubs at the golf course. No biggy. More places to eat at. Always worth a look since they have so much stuff. Either the management sucks or everyone truly doesn't care. I go here daily for work and these are some of the rudest employees on all of Kauai. Bryson didn't need to snap at me when I was just trying to help him put things on the conveyer belt. That big fat gay man doesn't need to intimidate everyone prior to closing, especially when there's 40 mins remaining and I only need to be in there for 5, interesting how you always put him there prior to closing. Also why doesn't tire warehouse ever answer their phone? I was leaving last night and I had food and medicine for a customer so I couldn't stop to make an appointment but I saw they had no one there so it was a perfect time to call, still no answer. I called them first thing this morning, still no answer. How is someone with tire problems supposed to get in touch with tire warehouse? I have to catch an Uber to go and talk to them? That's ridiculous! Your employees are foul, they cut you off, they're rude as hell, They all talk crap about customers as you're in the check out lane, and they all complain of being there. One more thing, I walked to get plates and saw two guys unloading, I walked up and the guy was saying something along the lines "oh yeah I used to take her behind Kmart parking lot and f*ck her right there" I could tell the other employee that he was talking to didn't want to say more because I was right there, we all 3 had made eye contact and as I grabbed my plates the 2 just stared at me. Do you understand how f*cking uncomfortable I was a woman alone standing there?! Their conversation kept going, as the one guy obviously really needed to express his sexual activities with a female single customer there. Mortifying. Worst thing is I saw the same guy walking alongside his girlfriend who works there too a few days later. Hi, I just wanted to warn anyone with any weight or health issues to avoid Costco Deli. All their food is loaded with fat, butter, cream cheese and sodium. In excess.....They boost that they pay their employees more than Wal-mart, but with those extra dollars they expect every cent back and put their employees under alot of pressure, unreasonably so......they also impliment ways to avoid paying compensation. They run by their own rules and the management feels free to be verbally abusive...I feel sorry for people stuck there because employment is limited on the island... The Management are very arrogant...and really are not caring to their employees... I saw alot of unhappy faces at the front check out....and when I looked in the Deli window....I heard from some of the employees it is the worst organized place they ever worked... I told them life is too short to be miserable, so take a few less dollars to be happy.....$12.50 isn't that much to take personal abuse.....I am actually doing a study of Costco's work ethics here as so many have complaints of being unhappy and being ill treated while working there....they are afraid to speak up...I found it so far a bit Cultish like AmWay....oh they even tell you what credit card to use...definately not the normal retailer....cultish.....you have to be a member.....they make all their extra money off that.....what about the little Hawaiian families that can't afford that...they don't take Discover, Mastercard, or Visa....only AmExpress....Oye... read more

All the grocery stores and restaurants in Kauai is super expensive, even more expensive than Bay Area, which is known to be expensive. I was so excited to get into a Costco, because even though the price here is more expensive than the Costco on the mainland, I know that they're not gouging us and the quality is good. In particular, I especially appreciate the large and varied selections of snacks in this Costco. I wish that the Costco in the Bay Area would also cover the same awesome snacks, so I didn't have to eat as many as I did while we were on the island. read more

Had to replace four tires had an appointment Saffa extremely rude truck was not ready when promised, had to wait after other customers who are getting a tire repair, and they came after me. Thank god for costco. On this island it's a real blessing to get decently priced food. I love that they also carry a lot of local and organic produce. I go there at least once a month to stock up on essentials and the price for the membership has been a good investment. read more

And suddenly my wife remembered she needed something and said "let's go to Target in Lihue, I just want to pick up a couple of things." I of course, knew exactly what that meant... "Just a couple of things" would ultimately turn into a "cart full of stuff." Of course, you can bank on it that every single Target trip will either start or end at their in-store Starbucks. So there we were, walking around the Target in Lihue, Kauai approximately 2,600 miles from home... She picked up the things she originally came in for, grabbed a few snacks for the kids, and decided to get some ingredients to make a few meals back at our condo. But then as we continued walking down the aisles, something caught her eye. We were in the back to school section and she was like... "aww look how cute these lunch bags are for the girls lunches when they start school! Oh and they have matching containers for their school snacks too, we need these!" Mind you... It was the middle of summer. We were on an island. On Vacation. In Paradise. But there we were, shopping for lunch bags. At Target. So I said to my wife... "Lunch Bags?" "Shouldn't we just get these at our Target back home?" "Plus, we don't have room in the suitcases" My wife, "I think you have some space in yours" Needless to say, our girls are rocking their new lunch bags thanks to Dad ;) Ok, I'm being a little dramatic, but hopefully you can relate and enjoyed my little tale. But know that those memes you've seen about going to Target for a few things, but land up with a cart full of stuff are Real! Hey, I'm not gonna lie, some of the stuff in the cart is mine too! So what makes this Target stand out? Well for one... The parking lot has chickens and roosters just chillen out front. Of course, this target has all things Hawaiian and you can definitely find some great local merchandise and gifts that you can't get at your local Target location. The store is well stocked, clean and there are plenty of staff to assist. So.... The next time you travel to Kauai... Fella's, I recommend leaving a little space in your suitcase for that "spontaneous" Target run; your wife will appreciate you! Mahalo from the Mainland!

What's funny is that because the sales tax here is quite a bit lower than where we live (4.5% vs 10.5%), meant it was cheaper to buy it here than in Long Beach. And because of its proximity to the cruise port, there was a lot of new luggage on sale, with a lot of variety.

A couple of areas were slightly disorganized, with merchandise on the floor, and the store was fairly busy with a bit of a wait. The staff members were friendly and helpful while working to ensure quick efficiency with the movement of the line. Overall, this Ross is worth stopping by for wonderfully affordable finds while in Līhuʻe.

The loco moco itself was also so overcooked and rubbery that chewing it became the main brunch activity. My boyfriend had much better luck with the chilaquiles, which he enjoyed, so brunch wasn't a total loss. I was also surprised by how few vegetables are actually on the menu. Read that they had added some vendors but still found it lacking . Vendors are not all open the same days and times so it is pretty hit and miss. Even some of the food trucks I liked last time were not there anymore. Unless they make big changes this was my last stop. There is no draw pulling me there.
