Costco is great for most things. But they are outgrowing their abilities! How good they are is dependent upon location. Most notably is in their food court where they are widely variable. Today I ordered a brisket sandwich, which is usually a full and good meal. Today, I got a coleslaw sandwich with a tiny bit of beef. Probably 1/3 the brisket I usually get. I'll order a hotdog in the future, hard to screw that up! read more

Great store the prices are reasonable and the quality is terrific when you buy things here they don't fall apart they last so I have to give Costco credit for the quality and value of everything they sell. Only problem here is the produce section but who goes to Costco for the produce. I buy most of my wine here you get so much more for your money. read more

It's hard to rate someplace like Costco. It's a wholesaler that really is a retailer they everybody knows about. If you compare this cost Co. other trust grows, then you would have to give it a five. This store is an animal unto itself. I don't see the reason for ratings for some of these places, because service is limited and so is the product line. However this retailer is good about picking out with people need at any given time. My pet peeve is that they don't stock men's small or size 30 clothing. I guess you have to have the girth for all the samples to buy clothes here. The gas station is very competitive. read more

Shopping here definitely has saved money over the years. It just takes a bit of planning to stock up on items you'd normally buy at the supermarket. If you shop in the weekends, the aisles can get a bit crowded when the samples are out. I recommended shopping weekday evenings, totally different experience. read more

Before my family and I moved from the city last winter, we HATED going to the Costco in Lincoln Park....but this one is 10 times better! Even on the weekends, this place can be busy, but it is not an overcrowded zoo. The aisles are nice and wide, the checkout lines actually move efficiently and the employees are VERY helpful and friendly. You can also get plenty of samples without other costumers acting like vultures and running you over to take the last one. I have to take a star away because the selection of some products is not as good as Sams, especially diapers. I was also going to order a sheet cake from here once, but they only give a choice of two very specific kinds of cake, chocolate with chocolate mousse, or vanilla with cheesecake filling, no modifications allowed and the decoration choices were crummy, so I had to order from elsewhere. But other than that, I find this the best place to go for paper products and some groceries to buy in bulk. The gas station is always about 10 cents cheaper than anywhere else, so that's another bonus. read more

Went to Costco for new tires. Promised a 2 hour turnaround time. 3 hours later, I am still waiting for the installation to be completed. After speaking with the manager the excuse was a tire installation machine was not working. At no time, did they bother to inform me or the other customers who were waiting that we should expect the time needed to complete the job to double or triple, without me asking the manager. While Costco does a great job on installation, do not expect an honest assessment of the time required or additional communications from the manager or staff. read more

I visited this location recently to purchase a 14K gold chain and carved gemstone pendant, which I selected from the jewelry case. To do so, one must note the item number, price and a brief description of the item on a card that is available at the jewelry display case, bring it to a cashier to pay for the item, and proceed to "the cage" where a manager will retrieve your purchase. I evidently selected a popular item, because the only in stock was in the case. It was no problem though, since the item and its original box with the case that contained a certificate that describes the item and quotes its retail (versus wholesale) value were all quickly retrieved. Start to finish, the aforementioned process took about 15 minutes, which is not much different from purchase of an item from a jewelry store (though Costco is better in the sense that one does not pay a marked up retail price, or encounter the stuffy pretension that one may encounter at jewelry stores). We routinely buy our meat, produce, groceries and OTC drugstore items from Costco, which we find are less expensive than local retailers. Brand name grocery, dairy case and OTC drugstore items are particularly less expensive, and we also are very pleased with Costco meat and produce quality and freshness. House brand items are as good as or superior to brand name items. Unlike the other popular wholesale warehouse (that begins and ends with an "S"), Costco, at least this one, is orderly, bright and very clean; meticulously clean, and one may quickly and easily find sales reps who appear to be genuinely happy to help you out, even at Costco's gas station. We found that Costco sales rep service is only rivaled by Mariano's rep service, who are equally accessible, courteous and helpful ... for more money. We also have used Costco's website to purchase home improvement items, and the process, including delivery, was seamless, and the brand name items that we purchased were less expensive than competitors' prices. I honestly haven't a word of complaint, though newbies should be advised that aside from cash, Costco will accept payment by Am-ex, debit card personal check. read more

Costco is great, we all know. But I especially like this location due to their selection of craft beer. Rare-ish favorites include Stone and recently LaGunitas IPA. Please keep it coming! What can I say about this place? Its Costco. They have everything you need and that ranges from Food, Medicine, Tools and Gas. In Chicagoland where things can get expensive and half the year is under the cover of snow, Costco is a life saver. Price = Moderate Service = Good Parking = Plenty read more

This is by far the best Costco around. We've been shopping at Costco for many years now (too many to count) and now that they have a store in Mettawa, it just keeps getting better. Mettawa is typically less busy than other locations and the staff is very friendly here. They also have a gas station which has fair prices (relative to others) and it is not uncommon to simply pull into an open gas lane, which rocks. My favorites about Costco: - Frozen Yogart and Pizza from the Food Court - Excellent Wine Selection - Definitely recommend the - The 'All American Chocolate Cake' is really quite good, as are the chocolate buttercream cupcakes and the breakfast danish - Free samples seem extra plentiful here - Awesome wine selection - Don't be afraid of trying the Kirkland branded products. The chardonnay is quite nice as is the bubbly, and both are at great prices. - Great produce which is typically always fresh - Kirkland grapeseed oil - The Kirkland spices are great and again at great prices. Notice a trend with the Kirkland products yet? ;-) All in all, this is a really superb store and I wish other locations could be as nice as this one! read more

I lived on the coast for a handful of days and Costco was the place to go for anything and everything surfing. I bought 2 Wavestorm Surfboards and they're troopers. I took them to the Wedge and they endured, North Shore Oahu? No problem. Nevertheless, there was a problem. The west coast days are now over and I was in search of another surfboard to add to my collection. Instinctively, Costco was the one destination I had in mind. However, upon arriving, I inquired as to where the surfboards were located and the staff member in great confusion said to me that they only sold paddle boards at this location. I was not only perplexed but also outraged at the fact that the main manufacturers of the best selling surfboard in America did not in fact sell these wonderful boards in all of their locations. In conclusion, this Costco does offer a wide selection of products but in terms of aquatic activities, I'd recommend trying out their west coast locations. read more

I purchased a hp laptop that was on sale for $399. Had no problem putting in my username in but kept getting my password rejected. I was then asked if a code could be emailed to me only problem was that the email was not my email address. After three unsuccessful attempts It kept giving me same wrong email. My computer guy worked on it getting same results that shows this computer was returned and Costco sold it again without disclosing this was a used computer. I also returned it. Think twice before buying electronics from Costco. I have learned other people experienced same thing with Costco. read more

Compared to the other Big Thing in our area, Sam's Club, Costco holds higher quality and more Brand Names (Also their private label, known as Kirkland - very good, too). They have a bakery, but don't expect much more than bagels and breads for home use - their cakes and pies feed 10 at a minimum! Unfortunately, just like Sam's, you can expect bi-weekly shelf re-arrangements making finding your faves quite challenging - allow extra time their for shopping. Relatively newly built, they are now almost at a full Level 3 (I don't even know what that means, but it is supposed to be good). Their wine selection is vast, but expect their usual Sunday-only Real Deals (same in every store in the country, by the way). For wine expertise visit John C. Dvorak website. Let me tell you about my experience at the tire center here. One of my rear rear tires blew out, so I installed a spare wheel and drove to Costco expecting to leave with two new rear tires. They did not have the tires I needed in stock, and offered me to make an order which would arrive in 2-3 business days. I called around, and found the same tires in walmart for a cheaper price; however, walmart would take 6-7 business days to deliver, and I did not want to drive with a spare wheel that long. So I made an order with Costco. 3 days passed, I called the tire center, the person told me it actually takes 3-5 business days for tires to arrive, and since it was Friday, I would have to wait till next Tuesday. So I did. Called on Tuesday, the person on the phone asks me to hold while they find out, comes back and tells me those tires happen to be on a backorder, so it will actually take at least two weeks for them to arrive. Obviously I cancelled the order, waited 2 days for refund to show up on the bank account, ordered those tires online from Bridgestone's official website, got them delivered to my door the next day, put them in my trunk, and drove to Costco again for installation just to find out that they won't install my tires unless I bought them from Costco... THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE TIRE CENTER ONLY: We got new tires a few months ago, and made sure to go right when they opened during a weekday, to avoid a long wait. Nobody was there and it took 2 1/2 hours. That doesn't even take into account, the time waiting in line to check out and pay. I swear it must be a sales tactic they use, so that you're more likely to go shopping in the store for a bunch of stuff. And, checking out was a nightmare....we waited about 45 minutes in line, as there was only 1 guy working there, who didn't know what he was doing or just didn't know how to properly handle things. If you have a line of people waiting, you take care of them first, instead of answering the phone. He would keep answering the phone, instead of taking care of the customers, in-person, waiting in line. If you're overwhelmed with a long line of customers, you don't add unnecessary stress, by constantly answering the phone. That's just common sense to me. Finally, we left....got to our car, and the guy(s), who worked on our car, had cranked our a/c to the coldest temperature that it gets to. I'm sure he was hot, but he shouldn't have even been in the car, for longer than the amount of time, it took to pull the car in or out, of the garage. I would assume that the car is not running while they're working on it....I sure hope not....but there's no way for me to know that. I just hope they don't do that, and waste gas, at the consumers' expense, because they want to cool off. I'm sure everyone can relate to being frustrated, when they have their car temperatures and radio etc, programmed for themselves....only to have somebody touch/change it. It's different, if somebody is driving your car to go somewhere....but it's completely unnecessary when doing somebody's tires, to touch the radio or a/c, inside the car. The only thing that should've been touched inside, is the ignition/starter, to start the car, before moving from spot a to spot b. read more

The price was pretty good on a set of tires. But when you ask the person behind the counter how long install is going to take and they say an hour, you expect an hour or somewhere close. I had a melting down child after sitting and waiting for tires for 2.5 hours approaching 3 and no way to stop the process. Had we known it would take that long we would have planned something different. I don't mind it taking 2.5 hours, but if you estimate a time and it turns out to be 2.5x longer, then you need to either stop lying or learn your job. This can also affect cold storage items you just purchased in bulk and sit out unrefrigerated for an unplanned extra 2 hours. Will be the last time I use the tire shop at this location as their desk staff makes the cheaper price not worth it for us just because of time miscommunications. This is a very specific review about the staff at the Mettawa location in the tire shop. In addition, perhaps your employees could spend at least half of their time doing their job and not texting on their phone to speed up the process? These are things you start to notice on hour 2. Not only does it feel unsafe for them, but they are very visible to customers who are sometimes not so patiently waiting for their vehicles. read more

I've called 4 times to see what I need to bring in, still no answer. Also, starting to get really annoyed at constantly being asked to upgrade my membership every time I check out. Horrible customer service!!! We wanted to pay for our purchase (which was in excess of $150) by check. But because only my husband's name was on the membership and his name was not printed on my checks (although we have the same last name), they refused to let us purchase the merchandise. They didn't offer to add my name to the membership or offer any other options. When we asked to speak to a manager, the person that refused us stated, "I am a manager" and came off with an attitude like what are you going to do now? We ended up walking out after wasting over an hour of our time shopping to be turned away at the check out line. Our only consolation was that they had to put all the stuff we wanted to purchase back. Don't plan on shopping there any time soon. Sam's Club here we come! read more

Photo department person has the worst attitude. Twice I went there to get old photos scanned and both times she was too busy to get them done within a couple of hours. Mind you she sat there on the stool staring off into space when I first approached her and waited for her to come out of her "zone." The first time she had an 800 page document to copy (in a couple of hours?) and the second time I arrived at 12:30 , she said they wouldn't be done until 8:30 PM really???? 24 pictures to scan takes 8 hours????? Plus I believe she lost on when she counted, I found only 23 when I recounted. read more
