Disappointed. Had to wait to order since he was constantly on his cell phone. So many tomatoes as filler in my burrito I dumped the contents out to eat it. Most tables were dirty even though the place wasn't busy. Guacamole? Nah, avocado flavored sour cream. Spend less time on the cell phone and pay attention to your restaurant. read more

Ok, Cotija's listen up! What I have to say should concern you.... I've been eating take out from here on a fairly regular basis (machaca burritos, rolled and regular tacos, Carne and Canitas tacos, flying saucers, etc.) for the better part of 40 years. I've been to several Cotijas Taco Shops around town with pretty good results. This location is good too. I ordered their carnitas burrito with a side of tortilla chips. The burrito was average in size and came with a nice toasty flour tortilla. This is a local chain of taco shop restaurants that are located all over San Diego. The Santee location has the best reviews and just so happens to be close to where I live, so I decided to give their burritos a run. The place has a outside to go window for late night runs and small inside dinning area. Overall this place is really really clean, no typical salsa marks all over the place. Yay! I'm a fan.........a fan of really only one thing here now........but it was so good, had to bump this up to 4 stars. Faith was slightly restored today. It was because of the HASH BROWN BURRITO! I felt like a breakfast burrito and I remember seeing my boy Dan F talk about the hash brown burrito. It sounded delicious so I made my way down here. $5.93 was my total. Burrito came out within 5 minutes. They load this thing with crispy hash browns, tons of porky goodness in the form of bacon and sausage, perfectly cooked eggs, a decent sprinkling of cheese and to top it off they also add sour cream to the mix. This was easily the best breakfast burrito I have ever had AND it was probably one of the top 5 overall burritos (regardless of type) I have ever eaten. This thing was a damn winner! Served all day too! I have been let down by Cotijas other offerings in the past (hence my updated review has been 2 years since I was last here), but this burrito made it all good. Have been going here for years, but since Covid hit and there is no salsa bar to get your own salsa, every time I have been there, you basically have to beg to get enough salsa's for the food you order. They won't even give you one salsa for each item ordered. After spending more than $30+ every time we go here I would expect to not have to check my bag and see 4 small salsa's for the 8 items we ordered. RIDICULOUS! I wonder if when they eat at their own place, do they not use salsa. After this has happened ever time since covid, I will not be back. Yum, yum, yum! I didn't know where to start except stare at the menu for a good 10 minutes. Burritos or tacos; shrimp, chicken or carne asada? AHHHH! Too many choices!! I finally settled on what i came for, carne asada fries (I've been in the Bay Area for too long). I split that and a marinated chicken burrito with 2 other people and was overly stuffed. Carne asada fries: a little bit soggy but only because we drenched them with about 4 different delicious sauces. Good as usual with an even amount of guacomole, cheese and meat spread throughout the fries. The only thing I thought was wierd was the beans in the fries... I think I'll skip that next time. The hash brown burrito is the most complete breakfast burrito I've found so far. They've became more and more popular around town, and for me, Cotijas makes the best one. It has hash browns, sausage, bacon, cheese, and sour cream. Most places you'd have to add things like bacon, sausage, and/or sour cream n cheese. Kinda garlicky too, which I love, does wonders for the hash brown. The diablo shrimp burrito is my second go to burrito here, It has a seemingly simple white sauce that I can't duplicate for the life of me, and adds a great flavorful creaminess to the rice and shrimp. It's not at all hot, but damn good all around. And the hot sauce... My god man. They've ruined my standards for hot sauce. Whenever I have to eat elsewhere I'm wishing I had their hot sauce to drown everything in. Never had a bad experience here. This place is an absolute waste of time. Be very careful if you're avoiding items in your food that you are allergic to or you are avoiding. I specifically and carefully asked for them to exclude meat from my burrito. So, of course I get a burrito filled with sausage and bacon. When I approached them about the food, they did absolutely nothing to rectify the situation. They just shrugged off their mistake and charged me for something I could not even consume. Save your money and go to one of the million other taco shops in San Diego. I have been going here for yeeeeeeears! Back in the day my family and I used to eat at multiple fast food Mexican food restaurants, but when we tried Cotijas we were hooked! It's my all time favorite Mexican food place! The building itself just keeps getting updates, it's great. The staff is nice. Service is quick. They have good hours; it's always great to be able to grab a quick late burrito. They have great prices. And what you all want to know, they have good sized burritos! My go to is the bean, cheese, and rice burrito with a horchata! Make sure to grab some hot sauces from the inside condiment bar and purchase an extra bag of carrots if you're taking it to go! We like getting burritos here, the food is pretty tasty. Two problems, they use a cleaning product that has a strong perfume to it that I don't want in my food. They also use styrofoam, even for burritos, which I can't abide by. They don't take responsibility for their environmental impact. I would eat there if they did. read more

Every time I come to California I HAVE to have a carne asada burrito. Normally there's a place in downtown San Diego I hit, but this time my brother suggested we go to Cotijas. The menu has plenty of selection, my brothers got breakfast burritos that they said were awesome, my carne asada burrito was as delicious as it should be. This place has the best carnitas in all of SD in my opinion. Its super tender chunks of pork instead of that stringy dry stuff most places make. I used to go here alot when I was going to Grossmont college. But now I just go out of my and take the drive down to mission gorge when ever Im craving a carnitas burrito or fries. I always see people in line, but never stopped here. So one day we all decided on Mexican food, so I thought of this Cotijas. In short, the food was very good. It was not super greasy like some other places. The fish burrito was very good, bean burritos tasty, carne asada fries were great (according to family members, I didn't try those). The tortillas that they use have a good flavor, and are not too oily. I had a chille relleno burrito, and it was pretty tasty - again, didn't have that greasy feeling after eating it. I gave it this rating keeping in mind that this is Mexican fast-food. It's not a gourmet place, but for what it is, I like it and I will definitly go back. This place is good in a pinch but isn't very accommodating to vegans. They do offer "accidentally vegan" food and will make food to order that's vegan. But they won't reduce the price for you. i.e. Chicken Fajitas are $8.99. If you get them without meat/cheese they're still $8.99, which is kind of understandable, but it'd be nice if they'd offer a reduction or expand their vegan/vegetarian selections. They used to be good. They used to have good service. We used to come here on a regular basis. I don't know what happened but I had the rudest person take my order today. Everything I wanted to order was met with some issue they had, no flour tortillas for tacos. No shredded beef in their rolled tacos. I finally just got a shredded beef burrito and the thing was the soggiest greasiest thing I'd ever seen contained in a tortilla.
