This is a great little lunch spot. With really good sandwiches..I would give it four stars but the sanitation of this place is really really bad in my opinion

Cottage Cafe is so adorable. It'll charm the pants right off of ya. It's inside an old house in Old Middletown, so you feel like you come in visiting a family member who just made you a delicious lunch. First tip: Don't try and go through the front door. It doesn't open and you will look silly trying to get in like I did. The entrance is in the back. They also have a parking lot in the back that I should have utilized to know this. It's a very welcoming deli. You can dine in or get it to go, they've got tons of sandwiches, salads and soups to choose from, as well as some mouthwatering cakes. I forgot what type of chocolate cake it was, but during my visit the woman behind the counter let everyone who walked by sample it. Ohhh it was fabulous. I ordered the cafe club, which is your typical club on steroids... It was HUGE! And not only that, it comes with chips, egg salad and a pickle. I could only make it halfway through, and saved the rest for dinner. I can imagine myself stopping in more for lunch. The ambiance and food can pull you in like a magnet.

I've lived in the Middletown for almost 5 years and how I've missed this place is beyond me. It looks like a house but walk around back and you'll see the entrance and that inside this big house is the cutest restaurant and kindest staff. I was with a group of people and we all shared bits and pieces of food. Everything was perfect and well cooked. I'm already planning my next trip!

I chatted with some of the staff and learned that I was speaking with the owner and her daughter. The owner explained the restaurant's story - open 30 years. The building used to be a single family home, so it makes for an interesting look and some history. Owner noted that she goes out of her way to employ folks with special needs, and she received pushback for her BLM sign out front but has no plans to take it down. Great little not-quite-hole in the wall...Unique and memorable... Especially recommend to out-of-towners looking for a more genuine "Kentucky experience."

Got a chance to finally go check out Cottage Cafe at 11609 Main St. in the heart of Middletown. They've been here for 31 years and somehow I just learned about this gem recently. We tried the Cafe Club and Country Club sandwiches and grabbed a Benedictine and bacon sandwich to go(not pictured.) Both were great and came with delicious in season homegrown tomatoes. Don't skip dessert even if you get it to go... it's what they're known for. We tried the Miss Margaret cake which was a toffee and chocolate cake with little toffee pieces throughout. Even though we were already full we still managed to finish it... It was phenomenal. And the price for 3 sandwiches + sides, drinks with refills, and a huge slice of cake was just $32 and some change!!! The vibe is country quaint/// feels like a relative is in the back making you lunch in all the best ways. I'm already planning a trip back to try the tuna melt and the hot brown. All of the staff were sooo friendly and owner Susan even came out and gave us an extra slice of cake to take home with us because it was our first visit. Go check it out!!! Pro Tip: parking and the entrance are in the back and always save room for dessert.

The desserts.....OMG! We came for lunch and the food was excellent, I got the Reuben with potato salad and my partner got the Fall Salad. When paying up front we noticed the desserts and got a slice of Key Lime Pie and Ebony and Ivory cake to go. Holy Crap the desserts were amazing.

Cafe Club. It's huge and awesome!

I was coming here almost weekly for years before the pandemic because it was close to work and I missed it. My wife had never been and decided to try it after years of me telling her about it and I'm glad I came back! The in house cakes are simply amazing. Huge portions and some of the most delicious cakes I've ever had in my life. The owners are incredibly nice and conversations we had were great! The turkey club was usually my go to and still tasted as good as I remembered. I feel like it's actually larger! Which is GREAT because I can eat a lot . Prices are just right and I really hope to return soon! I missed coming as often as we did!

Several desserts in case; s'mores cake, ebony & ivory cake, toffee cake in the back, coconut cream pie on the right (partial)

Well this is a old house that is on the Main Street in Middletown, KY (Louisville.) You enter the back door from a wooden set of stairs that seems like you really are coming into someone's house. You step right into a congested area with the cashier and dessert counter, so it's best to step up to the counter or toward the opening to the next room to be seated. We had an experience here several years ago that was poor because they were out of everything, but otherwise, the staff is always great and the desserts are delicious! This past time, we got a chicken salad sandwich (hearty portion) that included nuts, grapes, celery, and mayo, a side of chips, and a yummy pickle spear. What I love though...the tomato dill soup! It just has the slightest tang and the dill is not overpowering. It is creamy, without chunks and has a great flavor. Why would anyone come here though, without getting dessert? We got a piece of S'mores cake, coconut cream pie, and coconut cream cake. The cakes are amazingly moist and the different icing choices are both sweet and creamy (not too sweet.) If you've had lunch, and you can't squeeze in a sandwich or salad, then definitely leave room for this place as a dessert spot. Yum!

no skimpy iceberg on this side salad!

The food is so yummy! The deserts are my favorite. Large portion size. Older building needing a facelift.

Ask the Community - Cottage Cafe

Could you please tell me if they are still open on Saturday from 11am - 3pm?

    Yes. That's correct

I'm thinking of bringing my mom here, she's in a wheelchair, will she be able to get in? (In other words is this place wheelchair accessible?)

Yes. They have a wheel chair ramp. I believe it should be wheelchair accessible.

It's really easy to shrug off a deli/sandwich shop by saying, "It's just sandwiches, nothing special about that" like some reviews I've seen. I think those reviews miss the entire point of the neighborhood deli. I've been two days in a row this week. Once for myself, then again for my family after they heard me rave about the sandwiches and people here. Farrah (sp?) greeted me both days with a, "Hi honey! Be right with you!". You don't get a greeting like that very much anymore, and that same care and effort she put into greeting her customers is evident in the construction of the sandwiches too! I mean when was the last time a business - even local - asked your name before you left, unless it was to put on your coffee cup? We've had the club, the Brooklyn, and the veggie caprese and all of them are phenomenal. I don't think you could make a bad choice at The Block - you're gonna be happy and satisfied. Maybe it is "just a sandwich", and maybe I'm overhyping it because of the way the love they have for the customers and product comes through the entire experience....but even if I am, isn't that the entire point of your neighborhood deli?

The Block serves fresh salads, sandwiches, pasta salads, and soups from 11: 00 AM - 3: 00 PM. We were greeted immediately upon entering by a lady (I'm sorry, I have forgotten her name). She shared with us that they have been catering and operating the deli for 8 years and that everything is made after ordering, nothing is pre-made or packaged. She was very patient with us as we decided which of the tantalizing offerings we were going to choose. The inside was pretty small with a couple of 2-seater tables. Bagged chips and a cooler with variety of canned and bottled beverages are available in the space for purchase. We ordered our food to go. I chose the Chopped Chef Salad. Readers, this salad was HUGE (the take-out container could barely close). It was loaded with greens, turkey, ham, red onions, cucumber, boiled eggs, tomato, and both Swiss and cheddar cheeses. I was thrilled to discover that they use only Boar Head cheeses, my favorite brand). Everything in the salad was fresh and delicious and the homemade ranch dressing was heavenly. How did it take so long for us to find them? I am so glad that have found them and that they are located close to our home, because I can foresee this being a frequent lunch spot!

The cocktail menu features several cocktail specialties, a deep wine and bourbon menu, some other spirits, and a variety of primarily KY brewed beers. I had a couple of the latter options, and each of my two beers (neither of which I'd had before, a "Stone House" traditional lager and a "Kentucky Commons" low ABV cream ale). Our table split a couple of appetizers--the chili wantons and the spinach dip. Both were good with the slight edge to the wantons as they were fairly unique and very flavorful. The menu is not overwhelming--there are just over a dozen or so primary entree options but each looked very promising. I ended up going with the special, which that night was sea bass on jasmine rice with tomatoes. The sea bass was parmesan encrusted and super flavorful, literally every bite of my meal was on point. Great sauce that wasn't overwhelming, the fish and rice perfectly cooked, the little cherry tomatoes the best I've had all season. My wife had the fish tacos and loved them as well. Service was friendly. For the quality and ingredients, prices were fair. I'd say the drinks are even cheap. Dessert looked great, but none of us had room to try any. It was a rainy night and we were in the basement area, which is covered but doesn't have full enclosure, so it was loud as the rain hit the side covering, but dry and nice overall. We noticed two of the bar areas were empty on our way out, which looked like nice quiet places to meet. There's also the full upstairs dining room which looked nice. Reservations highly recommended.

This glorious establishment serves some of the most delicious Mediterranean cuisine I've had the great pleasure to consume, not just in Louisville but in my life. Everything was SO good. Beautifully blended and layered flavors, especially the hummus and baba ganouj about which I tend to be very picky. I could have eaten buckets of both. So yes, get the food, but honestly the reason I plan to return again and again is because of the owner, Mr. JJ. This guy is everything.
