3/14/26 16 Residents from Swan Pointe HOA went on Saturday afternoon to Cottage Cafe,11609 Main St, in Middletown. Their hours are Tues.-Sat., 11:00-2:30. It's the Little Yellow House that is so quaint. The Owner is Susan Woodward, and she is such a hard worker! Donna, our Server was fantastic! She answered every question, knew everything about every sandwich, every soup and every dessert. She had the fastest assistants that brought us our drinks and kept our glasses filled and delivered our food. Their menu is very well laid out and full of the most amazing lunches. I didn't need to go past the Hot Brown! My husband and I both ordered Hot Browns. This is our very favorite item! It was delicious. There was a lot of tender turkey, covered with the best tasting Mornay Sauce and topped with beautiful tomatoes. I'm sorry there wasn't enough room to get up and take pictures of everyone's food. I did get a picture of our Hot Brown and our friend's Meatloaf and Chili. You'll just need to stop by and have hunch with them. And don't forget to check out their desserts. Wow! 30+ years at this location and I've never been until yesterday, hidden gem tucked away in the heart of Jtown. They do have parking or I just parked up the street at the community center. Incredibly friendly owners who hire special needs staff. Everything is fantastic, soups, salads, sandwiches and of course the cakes! I got the chicken salad but next time I will get the egg as my friend said its the best you'll ever eat. Open for lunch only and they have daily specials including a meatloaf/green beans on Wed. Ordered takeout as our first time here. A small house that is open for lunch and they close at 2:30 pm. They have been in business for 31 years. You get big desserts here at a reasonable price. My hamburger ( I think salt and pepper could gone a long way) had no flavor and the dessert was ok. My wife liked her food. They cater to an older crowd and may explain the food flavor. The service was outstanding and a women run operation. Since it was our first time they comped out dessert which was outstanding. What a great cafe. The restaurant is in an old house and the entry is from the back, off a parking lot. To be seated, we had to walk past the dessert case. One look at the coconut cream pie and I was a goner. I was with 3 teenage grandchildren. Those boys all wanted the hamburger. It was certainly good. The restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch. We were the last people to leave so I had the ladies box up an assortment of the desserts for us to take home. Cottage Cafe is so adorable. It'll charm the pants right off of ya. It's inside an old house in Old Middletown, so you feel like you come in visiting a family member who just made you a delicious lunch. First tip: Don't try and go through the front door. It doesn't open and you will look silly trying to get in like I did. The entrance is in the back. They also have a parking lot in the back that I should have utilized to know this. It's a very welcoming deli. You can dine in or get it to go, they've got tons of sandwiches, salads and soups to choose from, as well as some mouthwatering cakes. I forgot what type of chocolate cake it was, but during my visit the woman behind the counter let everyone who walked by sample it. Ohhh it was fabulous. I ordered the cafe club, which is your typical club on steroids... It was HUGE! And not only that, it comes with chips, egg salad and a pickle. I chatted with some of the staff and learned that I was speaking with the owner and her daughter. The owner explained the restaurant's story - open 30 years. The building used to be a single family home, so it makes for an interesting look and some history. Owner noted that she goes out of her way to employ folks with special needs, and she received pushback for her BLM sign out front but has no plans to take it down. Got a chance to finally go check out Cottage Cafe at 11609 Main St. in the heart of Middletown. They've been here for 31 years and somehow I just learned about this gem recently. We tried the Cafe Club and Country Club sandwiches and grabbed a Benedictine and bacon sandwich to go(not pictured.) Both were great and came with delicious in season homegrown tomatoes. Don't skip dessert even if you get it to go... it's what they're known for. We tried the Miss Margaret cake which was a toffee and chocolate cake with little toffee pieces throughout. Even though we were already full we still managed to finish it... It was phenomenal. And the price for 3 sandwiches + sides, drinks with refills, and a huge slice of cake was just $32 and some change!!! The vibe is country quaint/// feels like a relative is in the back making you lunch in all the best ways. I'm already planning a trip back to try the tuna melt and the hot brown. All of the staff were sooo friendly and owner Susan even came out and gave us an extra slice of cake to take home with us because it was our first visit. Go check it out!!! I was coming here almost weekly for years before the pandemic because it was close to work and I missed it. My wife had never been and decided to try it after years of me telling her about it and I'm glad I came back! The in house cakes are simply amazing. Huge portions and some of the most delicious cakes I've ever had in my life. The owners are incredibly nice and conversations we had were great! The spot is a house converted into a small cafe with decent amount of seating and a checkout counter with fresh baked cakes and pies to sample. All of the staff was quite friendly and welcoming! The food was very average, though. But their side salad is great since they use a spring mix of greens, fresh tomatoes and cucumbers, and shredded cheese. They offer some homemade dressings and 2 daily soups as well as a daily salad or two. Today it was potato salad and i'm a sucker for it so I ordered that along with a gourmet grilled cheese. We also got a veggie club. Potato salad - not my style at all. No tangy-ness, no creaminess, just very dry and lacking flavor/seasoning. My bf ate almost none of his veggie club.. hated the Benedictine spread on it. My grilled cheese was good as expected but tinyyyy for $6.50 and I didn't taste any of the 4 cheeses in particular or the olive-tomato tapenade. Our waters and coffe were kept full and paying at the counter was a breeze. The menu is small but concise, though there are really no true options for vegetarians other then 2-3 sandwiches, possibly a soup of the day, and salads if you remove the meat. I called and placed a pick up order. I specified that I was vegetarian and they suggested the Christmas club. Its loaded with fresh, crisp veggies. There is a creamy Benedictine spread as well as a red pepper spread that completely brought the sandwich together. The bread was perfectly toasted. The ordering process was easy. I really wanted the coconut cream pie but they said it wasn't ready yet. So I told them to pick the best tasting dessert they had. They gave me the miss Margaret. It was fluffy, creamy, I'm not sure the exact flavors but I could detect some coconut and chocolate. The plate came with a small side of chips. Pickle and potato salad. My only complaint is, where is the salt? This would have been a 5 star lunch if there was just a sprinkle of salt in the potato salad or in the benedictine or veggies. Well this is a old house that is on the Main Street in Middletown, KY (Louisville.) You enter the back door from a wooden set of stairs that seems like you really are coming into someone's house. You step right into a congested area with the cashier and dessert counter, so it's best to step up to the counter or toward the opening to the next room to be seated. We had an experience here several years ago that was poor because they were out of everything, but otherwise, the staff is always great and the desserts are delicious! This past time, we got a chicken salad sandwich (hearty portion) that included nuts, grapes, celery, and mayo, a side of chips, and a yummy pickle spear. What I love though...the tomato dill soup! It just has the slightest tang and the dill is not overpowering. It is creamy, without chunks and has a great flavor. Why would anyone come here though, without getting dessert? We got a piece of S'mores cake, coconut cream pie, and coconut cream cake. The cakes are amazingly moist and the different icing choices are both sweet and creamy (not too sweet.) Barb, a server, at Cottage Cafe in Middletown is one of the sweetest women that I've been blessed to meet. I chipped a tooth while I was there Friday. It already had a crack in it and it was on its last leg. It had nothing do do with my favorite meal, chicken salad and tomato dill soup. After that happened, I still had over half of my meal left. We've been here several times for a quick lunch. This place is in an old house right if Main Street in Middletown. Today it was not as quick as it usually is. We came in right at 11 when they opened. The place was super cold, uncomfortably cold. We found our own seats and were promptly Approached to order drinks. We ordered and then also ordered our food. We all ordered soups and/ sandwiches. Soup was room temperature, my guess is thy didn't start heating it up before they opened. Our sandwiches came out fine after a 40 minute wait, one of our orders was delayed even more. We were nearly finished with our meals before our friend received hers. When she did receive it, the grilled cheese was not cooked long enough. Which is weird considering since her food was delayed, they said it's because they burned her sandwich. Now in to why they scored a 3 rather than less than. They gave my friend her sandwich for free and they brought us two desserts for our table to share. That was super nice. Come at early or late lunch time, if not it's super packed. My boyfriend grew up going here with his family but no longer lives in the area. We were traveling to see my family in WI from FL so we made a point to stop here for lunch. He told our waitress that he hasn't been there in 20 years and she immediately grabs the owner so my bf could share his story. She absolutely loved it and told her daughter. The food here is hands down 5 stars, and the deserts are phenomenal! It's quickly become one of my favorite spots to grab lunch and go! The reason I give it just 4 stars is the presentation. I think it's cute that it's in a 100 year old house but it could use some TLC in the cleaning department. I also think it's odd that the same broken down van has been sitting in the back parking lot for a year. I have never eaten inside the restaurant because it's not appealing to me. How in the WORLD have I not seen nor heard about this ridiculously charming place? I don't frequent the Middletown area too much, as it's far away from where I live in the Southend. It is in a house, but you walk in through the back door. I walk in, and the sweetest lady to ever live gets a spoonful of their home made cheesecake, hoists it my direction and says with the most lovely smile on her face, "Would you like to try?" And naturally, I did - and naturally, it was unbelievably delicious. The front counter is very busy. People appear to have ordered baked goods and plate lunches in advance and are getting them to go. I tell the lady that I've never been here, and she says, "Oh that's OK. We'll help you out!" She walks me into the dining area and tells me to sit anywhere I like. I notice that the place isn't in the greatest shape. Some areas of the floors are sunk in. The bathroom has some ceiling coming down. And honestly, it adds to the charm. There's a difference between dilapidated and charmingly old. This is the latter. I sit on the porch (enclosed), and the server takes my order. I get the lunch special - half sandwich, chips, and a cup of soup. Now this is worth noting - the food was good. It wasn't over the top good. But it was exactly what you'd expect and hope. I was greeted by a young, smiling man who offered me a taste of a mint chocolate cake. Delicious!! The staff is warm, kind snd cheerful. I couldn't help but feel love and joy within the humble space. I ordered Cottage Cafe's famous chicken salad (the best in town) as it is a house favorite. Because tomatoes are in season, one can enjoy the famous chicken salad three different ways: in a sandwich (traditional); as part of a salad plate or stuffed into a giant, home grown tomato. I chose the tomato stuffed chicken salad because I had never had a chicken salad stuffed tomato. Life is short; it was time to indulge. The tomato is fresh and succulent. The chicken salad has nuts (food allergy warning to those who must avoid nuts), grapes, celery and just the right amount of dressing. The two flavors -- chicken salad and fresh tomato -- combine to make a perfect match! The dish came with fresh slices of Granny Smith apples and oranges. A bed of lettuce and biscuit complete the meal. Best of all, Cottage Cafe supports special needs adults by staffing the business with helpful and kind individuals who also face unique challenges. I will return often. Where else in Louisville can a person find a lunch spot where love, joy and good food join to make a person happy. My work friend and I get takeout from Cottage Cafe frequently. We both have our "go to" orders but I've committed to branching out the next time we stop in. My usual lunch order is the Benedictine Sandwich with bacon on wheat bread and a cup of the Tomato Dill soup. This sandwich very well may be the best I've ever had! The Benedictine and cucumbers are refreshing and light while the bacon is perfectly crispy. The soup is full of flavor. My friend always gets the BLT. She has also had the potato salad and really enjoyed it. Lately we've found ourselves splitting a piece of whatever cake looks best too! The heath bar cake is fabulous. The only reason I can't give this little place 5 stars is because of the visual aspects / atmosphere. The decor is very outdated and it feels and looks a little...slummy' in there.
