Wish I could give a review on the food. We made a reservation in advance for Saturday the 7th for 5 people at 6:15 for our mothers birthday. Imagine our surprise when we arrive and are told they are overbooked and there would be an additional wait of 40 minutes. We left a number to be called and an hour later there was still no call. I called the restaurant only to be asked "if your reservation was at 6:15 why are you calling now?" Another young man got on the phone and said it would still be 20-30 minutes and that they would call us. We ate dinner at another lovely restaurant and never did receive that phone call. I understand staffing challenges but saying you overbooked is kind of maddening especially when you never call to follow up with or even apologize to your customers. read more

I was able to make my reservation through Yelp --bonus!!! Although they were busy, we were seated right away by a humble host. The appetizer menu had a vast array of bruschetta ranging from traditional to ceviche. They also had traditional and seafood pastas, blah blah blah. Cotto a Legna bruschetta $10: MUST HAVE! The bread was soft and perfectly chewy topped with bacon, sliced fresh pear, blue cheese, and raspberry marmalade--- DIVINE Eggplant parmigiana $12 with angel hair pasta $9 on the side. A bit salty but quite tasty. The eggplant was hearty and the angel hair pasta was a perfect compliment to this appetizer dish. Chocolate soufflé $8: nothing special here. I would try their lava cake instead. Red moscato (Italy) $9: sweet, fresh, and light. Great dessert wine. Service: it could be better. We weren't needy but I was parched after a long day of work. Went here on 08/29/19 with a group of ladies from meetup and really liked it! We sat on their patio on a perfect late summer evening enjoying dinner and conversation. They let us stay as long as we wished, a few hours. At times it was hard to hear due to nearby trains but I was ok with that. The service was friendly and 5 star. I had Sea Bass as the main entree and it was excellent! The caprese appetizer was ok and presentation interesting. I would prefer local grown fresh tomatos instead of huge flavorless ones. Real let down last night for dinner. Seems only 2 waiters were staffed but place is not that big to not know that a party of 6 were sitting flipping menu over and over and over waiting for a drink or an appetizer. Half hour went by until we asked a guy if we could place an order and guy is like this isn't my table but I'll let the girl know. Well girl never came she busy making drinks at bar finally she passes and we ask if we can order now and she had no clue she was supposed to wait on us. Very poor service all around. First you should never have your severs bartending and severing at the same time. You should have a bartender on at all times making drinks for the bar and dining room area for the severs. I have never been to a restaurant that had servers do everything from severing to bartending and even bussing tables. You also need to get bussers and a hosts. Your manger sucks and they do not no how to manage a restaurant properly. Your customer should not have to sit and wait for over an hours to get served there food. More drinks go out then food. They whole restaurant was filled up and nobody was being served food except for getting their drinks. There should be a steady flow of both food and drinks coming out. We went about a year ago when outdoor dining was the only thing allowed. We really liked it and visited again this weekend with friends. Service was extremely slow but the server did stop by periodically to check on us and apologize for the delay. It took just over an hour to get our appetizers. After that, everything came out in a reasonable amount of time. Given our experience last time, we were really looking forward to the food but unfortunately, we were a bit disappointed. I had a seafood risotto which was overly salted and the shrimp were no bigger than the size of a dime. I can only imagine this is a result of attempting to save on food costs which I can kind of understand but personally, I'd pay more for higher quality ingredients. My wife had the Cajun chicken pasta. She asked for extra spicy and it came out with no flavor whatsoever. It looked good but it was totally flavorless. Maybe it was just a bad night for them. Sandi and I came here for lunch and an adventure as part of Geneva Restaurant Week 2020. I like to try out different restaurants new to us when you can get a deal. We were greeted nicely by a waitress and found a table. The restaurant has a variety of tables and we discovered one a little higher because of my prosthesis. We did not have to wait long to place our order. We started out with crab cakes for an appetizer. I was pleasantly surprised that the crabcakes came in a salad of it's very own. I ordered the meatball sliders. The sliders came in threes. How very trinitarian of them. The slider buns were hand crafted. As my side dish, I chose the white clam chowder. Both dishes tasted great. Sandi ordered the steak sandwich and a side salad. The steak sandwich was delicious and messy. We packed up a good portion of the sandwiches for tonight, so that we could devour dessert. The wait person knew her desserts, and we ordered strawberry cheesecake with a piece of mint. The cheesecake was so good that we ate it all up. Left over sandwiches for tonight. Service was amazing, started with a drink that my girlfriend had selected for herself. I unfortunately I didn't know what I had wanted yet and they offered me time to decide while they prepared my girlfriends drink. When he came back I had made a selection. We also proceeded to order two Starters, the crane cakes and the garlic butter shrimp with grits was delicious. Our mane course being pork chops cooked perfectly well done on a bed of risotto and a carbonara linguini with grilled asperities and mushroom. Both very delicious. Our experience, was similar to the first time, except this second time, the weather, seemed as though we were in the south, as it was simply sweltering outside! But, as before, my shrimp were found, large, sweet and succulent, in my savory shrimp and grits...Yet, fighting to be heard, amongst friends, made us nearly lose our wits! I am leaving this review in regard to my fiancées dining experience on February 18th at approximately 07:30 PM. I have made several attempts to speak to a manager in person, on the phone and through email but unfortunately no one would reach back out to me. My fiancée and her two girlfriends went in to eat for dinner and were served by Joel. Throughout their whole dining experience, they felt uncomfortable and disrespected by Joel. It started when my fiancés girlfriend attempted to pronounce an Italian appetizer, when she mispronounced the dish, she stated "sorry I f*ucking butchered that name" and laughed jokingly to which Joel replied, "watch your mouth, this is a family restaurant" and walked away from the table, not acknowledging that he took the order. There were several occasions in which he made inappropriate comments to my fiancé's friend who is married, specifically stating that he "had the bartender make her drinks extra special". Not only did the comments make these three women feel uncomfortable but also his presence. Joel kept hovering around the table and asking if they were okay every five minutes. There was a point in which my fiancé called him out on it, and he replied with "I'm just bored". With the comments he was making and how he was hovering by their table the whole time I would say that's borderline harassment. Joel also would not respond to my fiancée's request or her other friends while they were trying to order. He was just responding to the married women that he was attempting to flirt with. When he finally did choose to acknowledge my fiancé's second request for a to-go-box he was disrespectful and said, " I heard you the first time, the second time and the third time" and walked away. Not only was Joel disrespectful and harassing my fiancée and her two friends, but he was also visibly drunk. It started at the beginning of their dining experience when he asked the ladies on multiple occasions if he had their permission to start drinking. I find it very unprofessional that a waiter is asking customers if it's okay to start drinking alcohol while on the job. They also saw him drinking behind the bar while they were there. Upon one of his many "bored visits" to the table, he continuously forgot that he had just taken their drink and food orders, after repeatedly taking the same drink and food orders and "forgetting" to enter them. They were one of the last tables to leave Saturday night due to Joel not bringing them their check. My fiancé had to find Joel, who was drinking beer at the bar, and ask for the check. Instead of an apology for being unprofessional and not taking care of his table, he said " Seriously? You're gonna call me out in front of everyone while I'm enjoying my drink" with a beer in hand. I not only find the way that Joel behaved to be completely inappropriate and unprofessional but also the lack of response from management to hold their staff accountable for their actions. I am appalled at how management could let a man treat a group of women like that and not take any action. As a frequent diner at this establishment for several years, we are beyond disappointed and deeply upset by the lack of response to this situation, the fact that this ever occured, and that our families will never be able to dine here again. read more

Edit: Renee Pierotti (Manager - Cotto Alegna) responded to this review on Yelp, marking it "funny" and responding "you forgot the part where you made a teenager cry". We did not make her teenage staff cry, however I imagine that the young lady did cry due to the stress and humiliation of following direction from leadership while working here. This response displays the very victim blaming and gaslighting that customers experience from Cotto management. As customers, we do not choose restaurant staff nor how they handle business, we simply ask that management do that with integrity and grace. Though I honor that Renee supports her team, I find it noteworthy that her choice to hire high school students, misdirect them, and improperly train them, leads to customer harassment. The short story: go out to eat on Mother's Day, wait 2+ hours for food, get asked to leave before all entrees are served because you've been taking up too many seats for too long, report it, and then get harassed (physically intimidated, yelled at, victim-blamed, gaslighted) by management. Another reviewer mentioned of their (quite similar) experience, it takes so much time to write the account of this. I have done it because I hope you can avoid this happening to you. --- My advice: Proceed with caution. Try Gia Mia, Villa Verone, Livia, or Chianti's instead. Because here, it's all good, until it's not good. Definitely do not spend your holidays or special moments here. After being a frequent flyer here I'm sad to say I would be reluctant to return after tonight's experience bringing my family in for Mother's Day, which ended in the manager raising her voice at and waving her hand in my moms face. We had a reservation. They were extremely overbooked for in-house dining and were processing take out orders. Our reservation was at 4:00 PM and we were served 5 out of 6 of entrees not until after 6:00 PM. My husbands meal never came until it was time to go. We were patient through the entire experience. Then, a waitress came to our table roughly 5 minutes after our dishes were served and explained that there is a 90 minute limit on the tables and although she did not want to rush us, she had to ask us to leave. In shock, we explained to her that we were just served, and my husband still hadn't even received his food! Little did she know we wanted to leave badly, however we could not because we had been waiting on them for hours. Naturally, my mom wanted to let a manager know what happened. We were spending our holiday here, we had been patient through the waiting, and now we were asked to leave. If a waitress at our restaurant was telling customers that they were "overstaying" under these conditions, surely we would want to know. Well, the manager here at Cotto apparently did not. My family watched as she yelled at my mom, flailing her arms in her face (on Mother's Day!) exclaiming, "well what would you like me to do?! We're all under stress here!" The whole experience was handled so poorly, and in a tense situation where the manager could have easily just listened, apologized, and corrected, she instead deflected, was aggressive, and tactless. Based on this behavior, I find it hard to support such a place any longer. read more

Yikes, this place was totally empty on a Tuesday night when my mom, sister, and I stopped in for dinner. I think at one point there was one other woman dining in, but other than that it was just us and some employees enjoying wine up at the bar. We were greeted right away by our waitress, but when we told her we needed a minute to look at the menu she then disappeared for quite a while. That was the only bugaboo though. Once we finally ordered she was very attentive and helpful. None of us were indulging in wine this time around, but it's to be noted that they have heavy pours! I watched the waitress bring a glass of wine to the other table and it was a biggie. I'm currently avoiding gluten and dairy, so finding something to eat was fun. Their menu boasts a number of pizzas, appetizers, entrees, and salad. It was a casual Tuesday dinner though, so I couldn't justify spending a lot on one of their entrees, although I'm sure they're very good. Instead, I decided to order the steak salad which was on their Chef's Special menu (I got it without the goat cheese though). The salad was pretty good with mixed greens, steak, onion straws, and tomatoes with a balsamic vinaigrette. I wish the steak pieces were cut up smaller though. It was awkward to have to cut them as I ate especially since I'd prefer them mixed in the salad. I'd be intrigued to give Cotta A Legna another chance. Their located right on third street in Geneva which is convenient. If you can't find street parking there is a free parking light right around the corner which is nice. On my next visit I will definitely indulge in a glass of wine and maybe even splurge on an entree. read more

A bunch of flies landed on my food and I asked if I could get a replacement and our waitress said the owners said no because it's "a risk of sitting in the patio". Everything about out first experience here was great. I am sure it helped that we were there on a beautiful spring day and were seated outside. Service was rather slow but we didn't mind the wait. Our main complaint was the atmosphere and service. The air conditioner was dripping on us from the ceiling, and after noting it to the staff, it was just said that management knew. The restaurant itself was very hot due to the heat. The $70 bottle of wine was also at 80 degrees, and very hot, so we had to ask for ice to cool it. The waitstaff also didn't know the menu, and it took quite some time for the food to come out. read more

But I have to vent about the "lobster roll" on the menu. Fault to me for not reading the description before ordering, but based on the title I assume I was ordering a lobster roll. It's a lobster melt, or something like that, a warm lobster tail with warm greens and tomato remoulade with bacon on a brioche hamburger bun. Ran into this little place by accident and it was quite the find. The menu was extensive, service was excellent and most importantly (for me) it was clean. Not knowing what the food was going to be like, I played it safe by going with the chicken pesto sandwich. As a side note, our waitress was gracious enough to let us know that the sandwiches were of a considerable portion and could easily be split, which is what I did with my mom. My dad ordered the mushroom ravioli. All of the food that came out was delicious and flavorful. The chicken pesto sandwich had a generous portion of chicken with a delicious tasting pesto mayo, and the baguette that it was served on was nice and fresh. The waitress was not exaggerating when she said it was large enough to split. Half of it was more than enough. I'm not from the area, but would definitely come back and try other entrees, especially the pizza. From what I observed, most of the tables were ordering pizza and they smelled and looked delicious. Ai Funghi - The brick oven pizza topped with tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella and mushrooms was tasty. It was a little saucer than I prefer but the sauce flavor wasn't overwhelming so it was enjoyable. Insalata Cotto A Legna - The salad was very fresh and I absolutely loved it. Arugula topped with thinly sliced green apples, a little blue cheese, bits of bacon (not too much) and toasted hazelnuts. Topped with a light vinaigrette. YUM! I think I enjoyed it more than the pizza! Atmosphere - Modern but still warm. It isn't too large of a restaurant so a reservation might be a good idea on a Friday or Saturday (if they take them). My only complaint was the music was cheesy - sounded like a department store or something...but at least it was low and probably easy to ignore when the restaurant is busy. So disappointed that they are not following Covid recommended guidelines as the numbers and hospitalizations continue to go up in Kane County, including Geneva! We walked past Friday, December 4 and were shocked at the number of people dining indoors and not sitting socially distanced. It's just so so sad when other restaurants are doing exactly what is recommended for Covid but some places are willing to put our whole community at risk! Take out only!! The pizza is the closest I've seen to authentic southern Italian pizza. A little blackened crust on the outside and a little soggy in the middle is how they do it. Anyway, if you are a couple, go here and split the eggplant parmigiano and a margarita pizza. Went last evening for dinner and love the decor inside, very cozy. This place was remodeled and I think all the changes they did really were great additions to the restaurant. I started off with a cup of the tortilla soup which hit the spot last night with the cold & icy weather. The soup was flavorful, and liked the little pieces of bread to dip in the soup on the side. Soup wasn't too spicy and was comforting. Definitely would order if again, they also had on special split pea soup & a clam chowder. ***Special Alert: I saw on Wednesday's they feature 1/2 price bottles of wine on their menu. For dinner I ordered the bbq chicken pizza which had mozzarella, a sweet bbq sauce, chicken, a little bacon and onion on it.
