Of course love for The Cougar Country Drive In was passed on so we finally got the chance to do it together. Walking in brought back alot of memories. The food is really tasty but their drive through is sketch, the prices went up a significant amount (and the shake is like half the size) ANd the real problem is they don't have ANY prices up so you have no idea what things cost, they just whited out the old prices and didn't ever rewrite them, so it's basically a 'happy' surprise im really surprised they haven't gotten around to doing that. I've been going to this restaurant for 20 years. Recently it was bought buy another owner. ever since then, the quality and service has taken a dive and they jacked up the price. they regularly mess orders up and refuse to retire orders. This means, when they inevitably miss a fry order, instead of retiring the order they will let the 90% of your order get soggy while they make the 1 thing they messed up. I just want to preface this review by saying I got Yelp so I can make sure businesses get the credit they deserve. This is my first bad review. I tried this place about 18 months ago and didn't like it at all, shortly later they closed and I wasn't surprised. They just recently reopened with new owners (who own a different GREAT restaurant in town... thats why I'm surprised this place was not good..) so I decided to give it a try again. (My order was 2 burgers, Large Fry, & Small drink = $22) I think it will be best to just list the negatives here; 1. Every extra for burgers costs extra, even ones that come on most other burgers at other places. 2. The patty was advertised as 1/4lb but was NOT 1/4lb.. the slice of ham that I got on my burger was thicker 3. I was excited to see they had Diet Mtn Dew as a drink option but when I used the drink fountain just water came out... 4. It wasn't very busy and all the tables were filthy and there were plenty of employees behind the counter 5. The front is very congested while people try and wait/order for their food. 6. The fries are plain and tasted like freezer burn to me (But my boyfriend didn't have a problem with them, it could have just been me) While a lot of things sucked there were some positives; 1. They accept tap to pay 2. They have self ordering kiosks 3. They have digital menu boards to replace the very hard to see peg boards. 4. The employees seemed friendly I have to say... I'm pretty sure people only give this place positive reviews because it's a 'symbol' of the town. They advertise this as a place to hang with friends before supporting the Cougs (which is a great idea) but the tables are so uncomfortable (probably the originals) it would be hard to hang at all. I understand they want to keep the drive-in feel but their drive through wasn't even operational, and everything is SO old. We waited over 30 minutes for three shakes, two burgers, 2 fries, and soup. The 2 families we were there with got their food, ate it and left before we got ours. I'm not sure if it was because they were out of the bread bowl we ordered and couldn't figure out how to substitute it...they did with ONE piece of toast, or what. This place is a gem. It reminds me of the burger joints where I used to eat in California. I can count on one hand the number of burger joints I've found in Washington that remind me of the burger stands from my childhood. First off, kudos to the new ownership team that saved Cougar Country. Pullman almost lost a very important piece of the WSU culture. If it weren't for them, this place would only be a memory to the Cougs who have spent countless dollars here. I'm not making any claim that this is the best burger in the state, but what I like about this place is that old school feel. I've only been coming here since 2012, but this place looks like it hasn't changed much since it opened in 1973. It's an affordable option in town and you're supporting Cougs at the same time. First timers should try the fry sauce. Everywhere else where a Coug eats fry sauce, they compare it to the fry sauce found here. read more

I don't know where some of you are eating, but Cougar Country is expensive garbage. When it first re-opened, there was promise. The manager was ON IT. But I just got food yesterday. Just terrible. Only customers in the building and the server ignored what I asked for, failed to mark changes I wanted to my sandwich, tried to up charge me for a chocolate malt when I asked for a chocolate milk which she said they couldn't make. Waited 20 min for my order, I had to ask for my drink cup, the chicken sandwich was so dry I broke a spoon trying to cut it. The fries were dry and burnt. We didn't get the coupon for the dessert treat in the kids meal and even after asking to be charged to extra fry sauce we were not charged nor did we get the extra sauce. They didnt give any crackers with the soup and instead of getting 1 cup and 1 bowl of soup like I ordered and was charged for they sent it out as 3 cups. Worst $35 I have spent on food. read more

Wow! In all my years living on the palouse, I've never had such bad service! Going through your drive thru was the biggest mistake I have made in quite a while! Customer service.... THERE WASN'T ANY! This is not the same 'ole Cougar Country anymore due to poor management, understaffing, and a lack of attention to customer service. They take the fast out of fast food, are often out of various important items like cheese, fry sauce - or, have equipment breaking down. As much as I have loved this place since the 1970's and missed it when it was closed down, my last visit there today convinced me it should be my last visit - ever. It's a cute place with nice vibes. However, the burgers are not good. Specifically, there is more bread than burger. This was the case for both the Beyond Burger and Cheeseburger. On top of that the buns were not toasted. And our fries were also cold. 2 burgers, 1 fry, and one soda for $27. Glad we tried it so we could know we should not come back. read more

I will refrain from making a middle aged woman with wine joke. It's been done to death, I'm sure. Instead I will say that this is a well preserved blast from the past that probably shouldn't be missed if you are in the area for longer than a day or two. I usually don't go to these "drive in" type of places unless I know they are going to have a good customer rate. Too many times I've been to these "Frostee, Shake, Freeze, Hut, Burger, Thru" places and the burgers are just OK, and everything else is less than OK. And that is because of the low customer rates. I'm not really into eating food that is so long in the freezer It's been frost bitten. And by the looks of things during the "spring break" lull at WSU, this place has more than enough action to keep things as "fresh" as possible. I ordered the simple burger with bacon and Swiss cheese, some fried pickles and a pineapple blackberry shake. Shake was so thick I was afraid that I was gonna be sucked into the straw! Fried pickles were perfectly cooked. Not soft and mushy but not undercooked either. I'm guessing they are a food distributor sort of item, but still something I would intentionally go back for. The burger was a burger....I probably should have gotten a double patty, but then I would have thrown half of the burger away because I would have been miserable full. I'm not sure if they just salted the hell out of it, or if this was just a burger seasoning that was super powerful. Either way, next time I am ordering "no salt" just to see how it turns out. The gal who took my order was expertly friendly and helpful. Not one nanosecond of noticeable frustration or irritation with my "never been here before" line an went the extra mile to get me a soda water with lemon. (Yeah I'm that guy). $15 later for burger, pickles and shake. I wasn't disappointed with my meal. Well, other than all that food I probably could have done without. But it did feed me until the next day, with only snacking here and there. Pullman obviously knows it has a gem on it's hands with the Couger Country. Cougar Country Drive-In is a small town fast food joint with plenty of things to choose from. This is my favorite place to get a burger. These things are gigantic and under $5. You can also get a full meal for about $7. The only thing to be disappointed with is sometimes you get burnt fries or onion rings! Parking can be a nightmare, especially on busy weekends! Being almost 1500 miles from home and with no In-N-Out in sight, my sister and I decided to give Cougar Country a try. And I'm very glad we did! Ppl around town raved of this burger joint and the reviews were also generous on Yelp! I ordered the combo that had the largest burger and fries. I added cheese to the burger and substituted onion rings for the fries. My sister ordered the clam basket. Which, to our surprise, also came with a side of crinkle cut fries. Also in the bag of fried goodness were three containers of the famed "French fries sauce" (which really is just mayo and ketchup) and a container of ketchup. Needless to say, only the ketchup container was left untouched :) The burger was very enjoyable and HUGE. The patties were a little on the thin side... Maybe that's why they give you 2? The buns were nicely toasted, no tomatoes (which I can appreciate!), The fried clams and onion rings were surprisingly good! Both were crispy til the end of the meal. And they didn't start off too crispy... You know what I mean, so crispy that you feel like all your teeth are chipped. Only one thing was kind of a let down. The fries. There were areas of the fries where it was just salt. But that's understandable. It could have just been a fluke by the chef. With Pullman being such a little town, this burger joint is definitely a must eat! While you're doing the 25 miles per hour thing, make sure to turn into Cougar Country to try their fried goodness! I have came here 25+ times in the last year. The people here are really sweet and patient. My favorite thing here is any type of cyclone. They're decked out milk shakes. Plus after I think it's 8pm, you pay like $11 for a bag of 5 burgers which is totally worth it. Even with them being busy with doordashes and such, they always get your order out in a timely manner. I have never seen them get an attitude or impatient when they're super busy unlike some other places in Pullman. read more

As much as this pains me to write I believe in being honest. My family and I decided to go to CC on 7/31. We had eaten inside the week before and were the only ones in the restaurant. On this night, the inside was full. We counted 24 people inside, and only 6 of those had masks on properly. The others had them on their chin (no they weren't sitting and eating, just hanging around laughing). It was full of college students that were being brought by van load. We went thru the drive thru, which they got us ordered and through in 7 min. Asked us to pull around to wait for the order so they could keep taking orders. We did. We waited an entire 43 minutes (51 min order paid to food) for our food! I kept trying to call but there was no answer And I wasn't going in. My young child was starving and had an extremely hard time waiting. We watched as a few cars after us got their food, and one car next to us waited as long. We had a small order so it didn't make sense. They served two van fulls of students prior to our order, and they came many minutes after we did. When we did get the food it was cold. I understand things are hard during COVID but perhaps start ensuring those inside are following precautions, secondly, serve people in the order they come- not prioritizing students first. read more

I've eaten there several times. I got a raw burger three times, got sick 3 times, and then stopped eating there. The guy who cooks is stupid: he cooks frozen patties on high, so they're done on the outside and raw in the middle. I wish I had taken a picture. This place is absolutely gross, and the cougars that support this place, are bound to get food poisoned sooner or later. read more

This gets 3 stars because the fries and fry sauce are on point. However, as much as I appreciate that this was taken over by a new owner to keep it alive, I probably won't go anymore outside of a fry/fry sauce fix. I grew up in Pullman and this was a favorite. I moved to California and always make a point of coming to cougar country when visiting. But this was just a big disappointment. The fact the fry sauce is limited and you have to pay extra for an extra sauce is disappointing. The burger was not great. The cook apparently REALLY likes pepper. And there was another seasoning on the burger that just wasn't that great. The patty was so sad. The cub burger my mom got was tiny and SOOOO peppery... imagine if my son or 3 year old niece came with us? They wouldn't have been able to eat that really peppery, spicy cub burger. So disappointing. It's just not worth the money either. $22 for a cub burger, deluxe burger and one "large" fry (apparently large fries are the old cougar country's regular size). So not worth that money. Eat somewhere with more bang for your buck and less disappointment. The staff was less than enthusiastic. Very moody and not the most welcoming. Someone wasn't picking up their order and one of the girls who shouted the number after it had not been picked up sounded so angry and frustrated, almost like someone was out just to annoy her. It gave me a good laugh but I'm glad it wasn't my number or else she probably would have given me one of those "I'm disappointed in you" glares.
