Terrible customer service. We walked in ready to place an order and were completely ignored while the person I assume to be the owner stood inside talking politics with a vendor. When we went inside to wait for him to help us, the vendor had enough sense to end the conversation because there were customers waiting. But he told the vendor he would follow him out and left us standing there. No acknowledgment. Nothing. We waited and eventually left. When we had asked for advice earlier, he was dismissive and adamant about a recommendation that would not work for our project. Perhaps he was trying to sell and move specific products, but he was unwilling to recommend options. If you can't acknowledge paying customers or provide helpful information, you shouldn't be in business. Update: Response to vendor comment... If rating a place 0 stars was possible, this would be the place for it. Delivery was already three hours late, as the stated delivery times were between 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. I could understand this, as sometimes things don't go as planned or scheduled. However, I'm not sure if this is the owner, but the man at the front desk was xenophobic, racist, and downright discriminatory to me and my father. When purchasing from this store, he had taken a picture of the item he chose (as one does to ensure they receive the correct item). However, the delivered item was NOT the one he chose and was also of much lower quality. As this became an issue, my father called me to help translate and work out the problem. My father is not the best at English, but he gets by as he has a business as well. When I got to the place, the man (which I am assuming is Matt from the already abundant negative reviews on this page), brushed off my father and went inside his office for a "lunch break". We waited outside and it even seemed as if his workers were terrified of him, honestly speaking. When he opened the doors to the office, I went inside to talk and possibly come to a resolution. However, the next few minutes were the most shocking and discriminating times I have ever faced in my life so far. This man had downright gaslighted my father and I, trying to utilize the power imbalance, as we are people of color. I spoke calmly about the wrong item that was delivered, while this man kept trying to push the responsibility to someone else. As the store owner, the responsibility is on YOU if your worker messes up an order for a customer. It was mind boggling how he kept making excuses on top of excuses, which then led to him targeting my father's LANGUAGE skills. He said, "How do you expect my workers to understand someone like him?" which shocked me. My father's English may sometimes be difficult to understand, but this was by no means in relation. He took a PICTURE that day of the item he wanted and pointed it out to make sure that there was ZERO confusion. This man even went out of his way to say, "People are getting crazier! I never had people like this ten years ago." How does this relate to the issue at hand? He even stated, "Do you really expect my workers to understand MANDARIN?" We are Korean, not Chinese. Was I surprised to hear this man assume that all Asians are of Chinese descent? No. I was more shocked to believe that someone this ignorant EXISTS in 2024. In the digital age, you can Google just about anything. He then asked my dad, "Can you explain what you want in English?" At that point, I had no words. You would think that outright racism and xenophobia like this are only shown on TV. To make matters worse, he completely lied when I mentioned his previous offer about the possible "re-invoice" (which I'm not sure if he even was considering from the start). He claimed that he had NEVER said that and that he had NEVER said anything close to it. This man should take his time to educate himself on white fragility instead of blaming his problems on minorities. I came with my ledger stone looking for the hearth for my fireplace he looked at me and asked there I got the ledger stone and I replied I wasn't sure my contractor got it and he said well it looks Like you already spent most of the $ for the project elsewhere and looked away!!! In contrast to other Yelp reviewers, I have been having great experiences with Cougar Stone. I first emailed Matt, the owner, sending him pictures of stones i was looking to find for my patio. He very kindly wrote back telling me he had what I was looking for. He even tried to call me to let me know this but I mistakenly put the wrong phone number in my email to him.We later spoke on the phone and the conversation yielded more helpful information. I decided to drive out to look at his inventory of stone myself. Frankly, I was a bit apprehensive after reading the negative reviews of how some customers have been treated. That turned out not my experience. Matt could not have been more helpful during my visit, directing me to various pallets of stone that he had in his extensive inventory. He even provided pictures of projects his customers had completed that were similar to what I wanted to do. I also appreciated his patience with my numerous questions. Cougar Stone has an amazing variety of stone types in their well-laid out yard and they even deliver to far away places like Palos Verdes, where I live. Surprised by the low ratings - we found them to be extremely helpful and knowledgeable. They had the stone we wanted but we were having trouble finding a pro to do the job - it was a difficult but smaller job (we needed a separate template made for 40 individual stones to cap a long retainer wall). I came to Cougar stone and Keith has aways been friendly and helpful. We decorated our whole backyard with their flagstone and used their stacked stone for columns on our wall. Five years ago my wife and I went to Cougar Stone to purchase stone veneer for our fireplace. We ended up getting out of there as quick as we could because we realize their customer service was non-existent. It was as if we were bothering the guy behind the counter. We ended up making our large purchase at Thompson's building supply. This was inconvenient because we live right by cougar stone. I went there again today thinking that maybe things have changed and I just had a bad experience in the past. I was literally amazed to find out that the person I was dealing with was the owner. He was NOT rude, but didn't want to take the time to even walk over to the stone with me. So I wonder, how does such a business stay in busIness when there is a cancer that starts from the top down?? Maybe, contractors keep them busy??? Maybe the gentlemen's father started it and he inherited it??? I sincerely wonder. They will eventually fold because their local competitor destroys them. And with EVERYONE using Yelp these days, they are going to pay dearly for their poor choices. Yes, it is a beautiful showroom but if you want to be treated rudely by the owner, be my guest. I am a returning customer in the past few years only because they do offer verity of beautiful stones. This time I communicated via email because I needed only a few pieces that I have purchased before, surely enough Jenna who was very pleasant over the email helped me and confirmed that she has the material needed, so we agreed on sending my guy to pick up. It was suppose to be 15 pieces of TUMBLED Shenandoah. I also mentioned to Jenna in written form that my guy is just a driver who has no idea of what I need and he is there just to pick up. So he did. When we got the stones it wasn't tumbled, so I called Jenna and she confirmed that she was suppose to send Tumbled and she didn't. So I asked If I can return half of the items back to exchange for the mistake they made ( I was being nice to use at least half of the pieces) and never asked for a refund only for exchange for what we agreed upon. However, Matt (owner) spoke to me in such disrespectful and rude tone, asking questions like "why did I send someone who doesn't speak English", completely disregarding my emails and conversations with Jenna. I never felt welcome as a customer there before, and never will set foot there again. His pricing is high, he is not a nice person, and I would prefer to pay twice as much and drive twice as far and not to be treated with such disrespect. read more

We had heard this was the place to go, and didn't do a lot of research after someone recommended them. We ordered flagstone, and they suggested 15% over what our measurements were. Our contractor ran out of stone (yes, they shorted us), so we went to a local stone yard (Resource Building Materials, aka "Valley Stone") in Lake Forest. What we paid .41 cents a pound for at Cougar, we got for .21 cents at Valley. Yes, Cougars price was TWICE the price! I called Cougar and expressed my disappointment and disgust just to see what they had to say about it, and they weren't at all concern. I literally am sick. Do your research people ......Cougars prices are twice what you should be paying, and they accept no returns (wonder why!). read more

Cougar Stone was recommended to us two years ago, when we decided to re-face both of our brick fireplaces with stone. It is a wonderful place to shop, because they have sample stones installed all over the property - you can see exactly how it's going to look. We also felt good about buying real stone, all of which is quarried in the USA! We recently decided to install a stone path and some stone veneer to the front of our house. We considered cultured stone veneer, but with the pandemic it's hard to come by, and someone told us that after a few power washes the paint is gone and it looks like concrete veneer! Although real stone is more expensive, we returned to Cougar and found exactly what we needed in stock. Jenna was wonderful to work with, Matt also helped us, and a nice gentleman patiently assisted us in selecting the exact pallets of stone for our project. They delivered our stone the next day! Great experience. My wife and went to buy under a thousand bucks in rocks for our xeriscaping project, and they treated us like big spenders. Very thoughtful and helpful, gave some reduced prices for buying in bulk, loaded our selections on a pallet, threw in a few extra rocks for free, and loaded the pallet onto my truck like pros. I originally went to Cougar Stone a few years back and I don't remember what happened but I vaguely remember having some type of bad experience that I must have blocked out because I went back again last week. I didn't buy stone from them the first time and I didn't buy stone from them this time. They have a beautiful yard full of gorgeous stone, however, they treat people like absolute dirt. When I asked if I could pick a couple of the rocks myself the owner flatly refused and when I remarked "You don't cater to homeowners do you?" He quickly answered, "No we don't." (even though the sign says open to the public) Wow, you are really rude I said. He then proceeded to call me a bitc* and other names while walking back to his office. I would NEVER buy anything from these people. Especially if you are a woman, you do not want to set foot on this business. DO NOT USE THIS STONE COMPANY!! if I could give this company NO stars I would. Firstly, the guy Matt is the rudest, most arrogant person I've ever dealt with in my life. We spent about $10k on stone with this company and you'd think they would be courteous and grateful, but not whatsoever. And the ONLY reason we went to them is I found stone there and didn't have time to shop around. They are very expensive as well and won't budge at all on price. I wish I never would've stepped into the place. We had 3 separate orders at different times this summer. The last order, I went in and needed 140 sq feet of stone and he told me the price was by the square foot (as he had said on the other times) and he said that the pallet was 140 sq feet. odd, but the past 2 times we were there, he had told me they were 130 sq feet). I even said that we may need more as that was exactly the size of the area. they probably didn't want to split another pallet, so he insisted it was 140-150 sq feet. interesting how it just "grew" in size. So he gave me the price/sq ft, i paid and left. the next day my husband was picking the stone up. so that night I looked at the receipt and realized it was charged by the "ton". So the amount was about $250 more than I should've paid, by the price he gave me for sq ft. I called him the next morning and very politely asked if we could address the bill, and reviewed what happened the day before.,he got very uppity with me from the start and said they "charge by the ton". I then said, thats not how you charged on the previous 2 orders and he then said, do you want me to refund your money. I though he meant the amount he overcharged me, so I said yes, can you credit my card for the $250. He then got angry and started yelling at me that no, thats not what he meant, that he was going to "untag" my order send me a check and sell my stone to someone else. (he knows I can't get it somewhere else, so was trying to intimidate me!) I said, well no, i need the stone, i don't want a refund for the entire order. He knew my husband was picking it up that day and i told him my stonemason was coming the next day to lay it. He continued yelling at me, telling me that he was going to untag it and send me a check. I literally was so upset, I was shaking. Then they shorted us stone!! our stone mason had to cut 50% of the stone to make the 140 sq ft. so we had to pay our stone mason MORE, because Cougar Stone cheated us!! They are a despicable company and I hope anyone looking for stone sees this review and does not give them business. They don't deserve it. I don't know they've stayed in business with their arrogant attitudes, expensive prices and intimidating ways. read more

Please note.....I have nothing but good things to say about the service I received at Cougar Stone. The stone is beautiful and we're very happy with it. But....BEWARE the cost. A contractor suggested Cougar, so because we assumed they had the best pricing, (if contractors use them) we found what we wanted and bought without shopping around for a better price, like we usually do. Come to find out, we found the same stone for more than 50% less at Resource Material in Lake Forest. Live and learn. The only pro to Cougar in this scenario is they offer more choices than many other places. But, still no reason to gouge customers......and charge a high delivery fee on top. read more

I felt compelled to do a review for Cougar Stone simply because I don't feel the responses that are on Yelp are indicative of everyone's experience. My husband and I went to 6 different stone yards/ building supply stores looking for flagstone for our backyard. I will say that flagstone isn't cheap at Cougar but it isn't cheap anywhere. And if we did see some that was cheapER, it wasn't what we were looking for. We even went to the ones suggested by the other reviews on Yelp and still found that Cougar had the stone we were looking for at fair prices. The other places didn't even have what we really wanted. We were going to have to settle. What I would like to say is shop around for what YOU are looking for and don't discount these guys because of the negative reviews above. Maybe the others have what you want for cheaper, maybe they don't. But you do need to check this place out. The quality of stone at Cougar was great quality, the yard and stone was very organized, they had a wonderful selection, and it was all at a fair price. We found the staff to be extremely helpful and kind. Even the gentlemen working in the yard were giving us suggestions about mixing and matching stones for different looks. I hope this helps anyone looking for this type of material because it is a big decision and you are going to have to look at it forever. You want to be happy with your choice. When I called them about this they were rude and would not work with me. My experience with Cougar stone was very good. I did not have to wait long to be waited on and I found them to be polite and helpful. I purchased stone for my fireplace. I had to go back several times, because my mason did not have enough stone and also because he had to re do the hearth twice! The folks at Cougar Stone including the yard workers were helpful and beyond accommodating each time I went back which I believe was a total of four. They delivered my stone in the time I requested and I found their prices to be slightly less than the other stone yard in Orange. I called to get information on flagstone, Keith was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. As I explained my situation Keith's expertise was able to aid me in knowing exactly what I needed. I went to Cougar Stone the next day and Keith had an employee help me pick out different sizes of stone that would suit my application. Not only did this employee help me with my stone selection but he also helped me carefully load it into my vehicle. These guys have a great selection of stone, however, the customer service is terrible. Today I went there to find and purchase some stone for a small project. After asking the very helpful gentleman in the office for a per stone price I went out to the yard to select the 20 stones I wanted. As I started to go through the stack a very gruff older man came up and said, "What are you doing?" When I explained he said you can't do that, you have to take the stones on the top of the stack. Lets start with the day i pulled up went to the front office ask the man at the desk if he can help me find a wall cap for my customer he said see all that outside go look for what you want. I was hoping he could help me with certain colors or thickness so i went to the yard to search. While I was looking i ask 2 workers if i can use their tape measure so i can measure thickness and asked them to help me with sizes and thickness.
