Nothing really special. The beef was tough, the beans were about as good as what you'd get out a can, and the potato salad was more mustard than potatoes. My relatively basic order also took around 30 mins which is unreasonable for a bbq place where the meat is pre-cooked. Stopped here on the way back from Galveston headed home to Dallas. Ordered a two meat plate with ham and chopped beef. The ham looked like lunch meat, it was cold, with no flavor. My kid wouldn't even eat it. I asked if I could exchange for more chopped beef and they told me "you've already touched it, there's nothing we can do." I asked so "I'm just suppose to eat something cold and that I don't like?" They told me they didn't know what to tell me. I asked for the manager and she said "well that's how we do it here." We stopped here in Centerville for a bite between Dallas and Houston. It is an easy road trip stop as it is right off i45. There seems to be a running comparison between here and Woodys across the street. As we have been to Woodys on many occasions we decided to try Country cousin this time. Definitely less commercial and more personal than woodys. To make it clear this is a wooden shack for take out only. There are tables around the sides to sit and enjoy a picnic but that is all. The staff are really friendly and the exterior of the building is decorated in religious memorabilia (I didn't get hit by lightning) I ordered 2 meat combo . Sliced beef (brisket) and smoked turkey. With potato salad and coleslaw. It was a beautiful day so sitting outside to enjoy the weather and eat picnic style was wonderful. This place has THE best barbecue. I'm originally from Texas, and consider myself an expert on Tex-Mex and barbecue. My dad has entered numerous cook-offs (and won). I had the chopped beef sandwich. This is a very large sandwich, not like the kind you get at chain restaurants. There was no fat, it was moist, there was lots of sauce, and lots of meat. The bun was fresh. The flavor of the sauce and the flavor of the meat were both outstanding. I also had the baked beans. Excellent flavor. The only reason I didn't give this place 5 stars was due to the Homemade Cobbler. It was peach cobbler ~ which I normally love. This cobbler was semi-warm on the top and actually cold on the bottom. Next time, I would skip this. If you go on a weekend, expect a line. It moves quickly though so no worries. This place is very small. You just order at a walk-up window. There are, however, a few two person tables and some larger picnic tables outside. Right next to the place is the smoker that they use. It's nice to smell the meat smoking and see all the wood stacked up ~ you know it's the real deal and fresh. If you're on Hwy 45, take the Centerville exit. It's worth the stop. read more

All were exceptionally good except Brisket was dry. I think Brisket was Dry due to them pretty chopping the beef so it dried out. I could see the guy in back of house slicing Brisket and all the good juices flowing out. Don't chop your meat until it's sold dude! Cardinal Sin. But very good I would eat here again. I have pics. Even in their old BBQ shack, Country Cousins was as good as the best, and better than most. Now in their new home at the same location they offer a sit down dining experience with the food even better. Now it comes directly from the pit to the customer. A better reference than the few strange minority reports on Yelp that downgrade the food is the fact that during the recent oil boom in Leon County the rig hands came to love Country Cousins hey BBQ so much that they paid Rusty (the owner) to haul it out to South and West Texas by the pickup load after they moved out there. I have eaten some, (to much, most often) of their meat offerings. All are consistently of the first order. I don't care for, and don't eat much of anyone's sides. I am there for the BBQ. This is a real BBQ joint, and definitely a better choice than their much larger neighbors across the street. They smoke in a very large portable smoker, kept inside an old fashioned smokehouse enclosure. Smoke was in the air as we arrived, always a good sign. As most good BBQ joints are, it's a hole in the wall. The staff was nice. And the ribs were very good, definitely the best part of our meal. I would give the ribs alone 4 stars. As far as the brisket, first of all, for whatever reason they cut all the bark off of it before serving. I guess it's a matter of personal taste, but to me good bark is part of what makes great brisket (pork shoulder too for that matter, although they don't serve that here or many places in Texas). And I do smoke my own when I have the time, both beef and pork. But secondly, mine was extremely dry. And without any bark, there was a mild smoke flavor but not much else. Sauce was necessary to make it decent, which in my opinion shouldn't be the case with great BBQ. If I have opportunity to go back, I would request brisket from the fattier end, and with the bark still on. Not sure if they would accommodate or not, this was our first visit. The sides were okay but all very sweet, not our personal taste, but that's okay as it's not what we stopped for anyway. I do recommend this place as a legitimate BBQ joint, and we would stop again sometime. But I would order differently in the future. read more

The sauce was way too sweet and by the end of my sandwich realized they used the dry brisket for the chopped. Very disappointed. The sauce was no bueno on top of dry beef .YUK!!!! Country Cousins was suggested by my brother as a meeting place between Fairfield (where he was coming from after church) and Houston (where I was coming from), said it was a really good country diner. My nephew said they had the best chicken fried steak and beef tips & rice. Although they were tempting, we opted for the BBQ - and not sad about that! We had ribs, sausage, sliced brisket, and chicken. OUTSTANDING! The ribs and chicken were BBQ'd with a dry rub and is by far my favorite way to get BBQ. The chicken was so moist that even the white meat was super-juicy. The brisket was very tender and juicy as well. The sausage was 1st class.
