My son and I stopped in for a breakfast this morning after checking out my great grandfather's house used to be located on South Vermillion street in Streator. This place is a classic gem straight from the archives of Americana! So warm and homey. My son ordered the All Meat omelet, and I had the Feta cheese and jalapeno omelet. Both were accompanied by toast of choice. Really yummy. The waitresses and staff were exactly what one would anticipate in a small home town establishment; efficient, friendly, and helpful. The door has a foyer, it smells like dust. The ramp, wheelchair accessible, is how I get to the door. I wait in the foyer out of hesitance, but also to give some formality to the operation. The place is somewhat formal, although it is a diner. People are quiet and reserved. They have breakfast, but in a dignified way. The weekly menu reads: turkey and dressing, chicken casserole, wimps on Wednesday, Thursday closed, Friday something else. Anyway, there are about 27 people here. The space opens to the left into a gangway. This is where they mostly walk. There are two free standing tables in the middle. 7 booths cover the opposite side wall. The left gangway went into a cubbyhole, with a bathroom and another family dining room. There is a full bar that wraps itself into a C on the far end of the room. "The Country Cupboard - Where Family and Friends Meet to Feast". I pull the bowl with creamer, sugar, sweeter, toward me. Slide it. On the table are hot sauce, mustard, ketchup, syrup, salt, pepper. Vintage coca cola puzzles go on the wall. Booths are numbered for special effect. I am in two booths on the lefthand side of the room. People with babies. A woman holds her baby. Plays with-it. A man and his family sit in calm silence in the middle table. He stares at them, back down at his food, to converse of course the place is of calmness, of strength. A girl meets with her mother. She leans toward the table in earnestness. A man with his family wears a sweatshirt. It's comfortable. I've drunk three coffees. The tables are plastic wood, long, rectangular. They meet the length of the booth. There are halloween costumes and decor around the booths. A man walks straight to the bar. The waitress circles the table to clean it. Plates, spoons, knives. Lateral steps to wipe it off, around in a circle. I walk in, nervous to enter because of eyes. Always eyes. I sit in the foyer and read the menu: Monday: turkey and dressing. Tuesday, collared greens. Wednesday, roast beef, Thursday: closed. I walk in, deciding to take a sear by myself and consign myself to this individual meal. I sit, look around. People are calm but looking over their soldier. They work hard. They don't want a yuppie judging them. Get this clear though - I AM NO YUPPY. I sit and get served by a Mexican lady. I've seen her before. Coffee. Yes. "Sit wherever you want." Ok. I sit facing the entrance of the restaurant. People file in and out. I order a regular breakfast plate: eggs, double hash browns, toast. I eat, calmly, slowly. I wonder what people are thinking of me. But it's not a huge deal. People talk about united airlines, mothers direct their kids. An old man walks in and sits in front of me. He says, "hey girl." To Caroline. "Eggs?" "Yep." I start to have more stomach pain, but this never stops. "What are you doing the rest of the day?" "Chilling". Says Carolina. "What are you eating?" She sits down to eat. "Hash browns." I got hash browns in my order, but so did half the restaurant. At this point its not really a restaurant. Its a room of people eating. I look around to take stock again. People are moving, have moved, some stayed. All is well. I take my 5th cup of coffee, because they've asked me about 7 times. I sit in a coffee shop in LaSalle IL, across from Camden. We've gone there because he's the only person, doe a long time, that would adventure with me out to random places. It reminds me of sitting with C-Dizzy. read more

Paid 16.04 for a meal that I enjoy at another local restaurant for 10.75. Sausage gravy was a deep brown and not very tasty. I'll pass in the future. read more

This has to be one of the things I miss the most since moving and living in the big city. A down home diner that is open at the first crack of daylight. Oh Country Cupboard how I miss you so !!!! I have known Mary Lee, the owner and operator of this downtown diner and she always goes out of her way to make sure the customers are treated right. From it's regular menu, daily specials, and home made soups you can't go wrong getting a bite to eat at the Country Cupboard. To really top of your meal, make sure to get a slice of Louise's homemade pies. Yes, I said homemade from scratch...they are a Streator icon. There is just something about finishing your dinner and having a layer of grease on your plate to say "GOOD EATIN' !!!" My favorite is to stop in after a long night of shift work, having a big old plate of made from scratch biscuits and gravy with a cup of fresh roasted and brewed coffee. Yup, guess where my first stop is when I go home to visit. Stop in here at least 3 times, chat with the locals, and you will have new friends for life. I go here pretty often, and I always get something from their breakfast menu. This place has nice, homemade breakfast options and very friendly staff. It also has a very relaxed, friendly atmosphere you can really only find in small town diners like this one. The prices are decent, too. read more

This place is wonderful. It's, of course, not 5 star dining. But after spending a month eating lunch in this town while here on work, this became our go-to place to go 3 of 5 meals. Fantastic diner menu with 24 hour breakfast and very solid lunch options. Place is very clean and you can tell the staff has been there for a while. Can be very busy but don't be discouraged. The kitchen is lightning fast and the food is very good. Can't recommend this place enough for good simple food. Oh and the pie is worth it. They take both cash and CC, but you do need to tell them the tip amount in advance if you are tipping with your card. read more

Our 1st time here & I'll have to say the Yelp! reviews pulled through again! We were already planning our next trip back before we even left! Hubby got the Chix Stir Fry & it was terrific! Came with soup or salad & dessert! I got the Grilled Pot Roast Sandwich with fries & coleslaw. Call Mulder & Skulley 'cause it was out of this world! And the bread pudding will make your tongue slap your brains out trying to get it all licked off your lips! And prices are extremely reasonable. Perfect amount of food. Not too skimpy, not too much that you feel gorged when you leave. Everything with 2 teas was less than $25! WELL worth it! Every bite made you go "mmmmmmmm!" Can't wait to go back......and we live in Spring Valley! DEFINITELY worth the drive! PS....Another review had said this was a "cash only" establishment but we saw no signs posted. Walked in with 17 people and they seated us immediately. The service was great and they were very attentive as no one had to wait on drinks as we looked over menus. They brought all of our food out at the same time which with 17 people couldn't have been easy. Now the best part was the food as everyone raved about what they had. What can I say? Everything I have ever eaten at Country Cupboard is good. Hamburgers--just the right thickness and cooked to order (I like mine well-done). Thick, crispy fries--not those pathetic thin things that other places serve. Delicious homemade pies. The restaurant is small and cozy with lots of nostalgic 50s and 60s stuff on the walls. The staff is friendly and prompt. The old-style red leather benches are comfy. What more could you ask for? Oh, also, it is close to everything in downtown Streator. read more
