Don't tell my husband, but I have fallen in love with the Elephant Vanilla Chai at Coupa Cafe. I think about it all the time. But anyway.....other than the chai, I have gotten two things so far: 1) blue cheese salad (with pears, apples, and pine nuts served with honey vinaigrette) - FANTASTIC 2) blueberry muffin - eh. It was kind of dry which was disappointing. I'm excited to go back and try more salads, some crepes, some paninis and even breakfast-for-lunch. read more

One of the better food places on campus, and decent prices! I've tried the banana split crepe, pesto crepe, and spicy maya hot cocoa, and all were delicious (I recently discovered pepper infused chocolates, so i had to try the cocoa). Yay for weird flavor combos. Pricing is a bit interesting here - crepes are 5-6 dollars each, but the small hot cocoa i got was over 4 dollars after tax. Maybe I don't eat out enough, but I can't really justify a small (non-alcoholic) drink costing two dollars less than an entree. The quality of their food is excellent, and the eating area is really clean. I think they have coupons every once in a while in the school paper, so i'll definitely be back. read more

I'm going to just be reviewing the food, but I hear that their coffee is excellent (and so probably deserves more stars). I actually eat here quite a bit and like it a lot. One of my favorites is the goat cheese crepe (last time, I was a bit disappointed because I found a small piece of what I think was chicken in there... though I've had that crepe more than a dozen times and this has never happened before. Compared to food establishments on Stanford campus, this is one of the best places (other than Ike's) on the med school/engineering side. The lines at lunch time are long, but it's not as long as Ike's (also there are healthier options here). I recommend: -Goat cheese crepe (if you like lots of goat cheese). It's just goat cheese and sundried tomatoes -Tuna panini Also, it can be a bit pricey, but they have this half sandwich/half salad option which is a bit more reasonable. Their Caesar salad has way too much dressing for me, so I ask them to put it on their side or get the other salad. read more

I'd been planning to try the Coupa Cafe on Ramona for quite some time, but eventually, my laziness paid off and they came to me! :D Anyway, I had lunch there today, and the prices weren't bad ($6.50 + tax for half a sandwich and a cup of soup). And their food was pretty good! The chicken noodle had a tomato-y broth though, which was strange, but still good! I was sooo full but was tempted to try one of their desserts. I got their double chocolate chip mini-muffin and it definitely took care of my chocolate craving. Edit: So I tried one of their crepes: the vegetarian spinach, and it was pretty good. The crepe part was soft and not crispy and was whole wheat I believe? I also tried an arepa (the special, a griddlecake stuffed like a sandwich with some beef stew, black beans, and cheese) and although it was good, it cost $7.25 and was SO SO TINY! It came with a small small side of greens, but I had to get something else afterwards to actually fill myself up. Also, they say 10-15 minutes for preparation, but I came during lunch and it took over 30 minutes. Would NOT recommend that. Kinda soured my impression of this place, but I still would like to try their breakfast.. read more

I'm torn. I like this place for their drinks, including coffee, but am not a fan of their food or pastries. I visit this place quite a bit because of convenience and they have a monopoly on this side of campus. There aren't any other close options for coffee. There are times I really want pastries but will skip because I'm just not a fan of theirs (that and I am pretty particular on sweets). The STAFF is good, I've haven't had a bad experience with them. As I've mentioned for other Coupas, their spicy mocha is the main reason I keep coming back. This location is certainly convenient for folks studying/working on the engineering side of campus, but my one gripe is that they close way too early considering the number of slaving grad students who are stuck in lab until much beyond 5:30PM and who would gladly offer top dollar for a coffee around 6 or 6:30PM. They're also not open on weekends, which I find surprising. Lines can get a bit long, but the service is quite efficient so kudos to them for managing the chaos. read more

Not impressed. I've only eaten here a few times, and I avoid it when possible. Although the description indicates $ price range, I'd say it's on the low end of $$ range. Even the cheapest dishes are at least 10 dollars, and I always leave feeling like I haven't quite gotten as much food as I would have liked. Their system for delivering the food seems simple enough (give the customer a number and then bring out the order when it's ready) but they always seem to have trouble with this. They come outside and walk around looking confused, and then if they can't figure out where you are they just give up and you have to go inside 15 minutes later and ask why your order hasn't been delivered. One time after serving me they then asked me which of the numbers at the table was mine. I feel like they are the one's who are supposed to know this so I said I'm not sure. They ended up accidentally taking my friend's number and then he never got his order. The worst experience though was when I ordered the vegetarian crepe. I will say first of all that the taste of the crepe was underwhelming, it was just a pile of spinach with melted cheese inside. But the worst part was that they forget to take the paper off of the cheese when the melted it, which I didn't notice until I started chewing it. At that point I just gave up and left because I had another appointment to get to. If you're on Stanford's campus, there are better places to eat. read more

I would say Coupa is 3 stars, but I give it one extra star for being on campus! The Tiger Spice Chai is my FAVORITE and pretty much the reason I keep returning. The chicken pesto and honey crepes are alright but nothing special. read more

When the line to Ike's is wrapped around the inner perimeter of the building, head over to Coupa (or perhaps just skip Ike's altogether). I'm a big fan of their grilled eggplant, mozzarella and tomato panini, and I've also enjoyed their oven roasted turkey breast one. Depending on which mood I'm in, those are my go-to items to order here. Unlike some other locations around campus, the paninis do come with a side of mesclun greens which are lightly dressed, but still tasty. The cafe also has a good selection of caffeinated beverages, and I love the abuela or spicy maya hot chocolates during the winter months. And, if you have a sweet tooth, the baked goods are rather delectable as well. I have yet to try the crepes and breakfast items, but I hear very good things. read more

We were there visiting the campus and decided to stop by for a quick bite. The ice chai, Mediterranean plate, and pesto eggplant panini were surprisingly good. If I had to be really picky, I would say order the ice chai and eggplant panini--Mediterranean plate was just OK. This cafe is broadcasting FIFA on select days, so that's an intangible plus! read more

Working full-time at Stanford gives me the opportunity to explore new dining options around campus and Coupa is pretty high on the list of places to eat. For the negatives, it's priced a bit higher than some of the other eateries, the lines are very long at lunch, and you can almost be sure not to find a table if you're not lightening quick (which I am definitely not). That being said, the food is actually quite good. I've tried the eggplant and mozzarella sandwich, the avocado crepe, their mochas, and lattes. I wasn't disappointed with anything. On the contrary, I thought their food was fresh and better than I expected. And can I just say that their mochas are the best I have ever had. I firmly believe that it is due to the Chuao chocolate powder they use. Their mochas are rich and chocolatey and good enough to turn anyone into a chocoholic. It's worth trekking in the rain, snow, hurricane...you get the idea. As for service, it's fast and efficient. Not much chit-chat but for a place that's almost always busy, it's probably a necessity. read more

The food is good, and the service is fast enough and friendly. However it's expensive, especially compared with the Cafeteria at the Stanford hospital or Bytes cafe. For instance, Coupa Cafe sells their lemonade $3, which is exaggerated. Moreover, the dish size is on the smaller end and I usually feel hungry again just a couple of hours after I eat there. For whatever reason, they recently decided to stop providing self service for water: now if you want a glass of water you need to ask it at the counter. It looks like they are trying to force their customer to buy a drink rather than getting free water. read more

The best place about Coupa is that it serves food until later in the day. I usually come here after swimming lessons, when Bytes no longer serves lunch. Their paninis are pretty good (the Capresa and eggplant ones are my favs). The service is just okay. There've been times when it took them longer to make my drink than to cook my food, or when an item I ordered was forgotten. The waiting area is pretty small and you often feel like you're in someone's way. If you don't order food "to go", they bring your food at the table. Sometimes they only accept take-out even if you intend to eat there. Worst thing about Coupa: often there are people smoking at the tables, and the staff doesn't seem to care about it. read more

First and foremost, Coupa has a monopoly on good service and quality food. This is a place where the staff know your name and will shoot the breeze with you. The service would be good in a city; however, given how terrible service is everywhere else on the Stanford campus, Coupa becomes a relative mecca of awesomeness. The drinks are probably the best thing to get. I remember loving how they put real chocolates at the bottom of my mochas. However, I think they recently changed the way they make the mochas. They have tasted this past month less rich than before. If it were not for this, I'd have given a 4-star review. The crepes are another highlight and you cannot go wrong with the pastries. The best pastry I've gotten is the apple cranberry tart. It is the most filling, delicious pastry I've had there. It unfortunately is an outrageous $6, so I get it once every month and a half. Lower your prices Coupa! Or offer an undergraduate discount of some sort. So overall, pros are quality food, excellent drinks, and good service. Cons: wicked expensive prices, could have better hours, and the selection isn't as good as the coupa downtown. read more

I was worried at first that this place wouldn't be up to the standard of the Palo Alto location. You never know once a business starts franchising into small locations. But not to worry, they're doing a good job so far. The baristas here know how to pull a proper shot. I had the venezuelan latte and, honestly, it tasted like a normal latte to me. But a well-made one, so I'm not complaining. They're open weekdays only and only until 5:30, which isn't great but it's pretty much on par for Stanford campus. read more

Great spot to grab coffee on campus, especially when on the Engineering Quad side of campus. Often disregarded because they have a satellite store in Huang, the baristas are often quite nice and the food service is quick. Only knock here is that the waiting area is a bit cramped, but other than that it is one of my favorite Coupa's on campus! read more

Mmmm ... that's good marrón, and stylish, too! Coupa Cafe serves some excellent Venezuelan coffee specialties in the Jerry Yang and Akiko Yamazaki Environment and Energy Building (aka Y2E2) at Stanford University. Lines sound like they can be long when classes are in session, but we slipped in during a post-exam week lull a little before noon and got our food and caffeine in less than 5 minutes of waiting. My coffee came excellently and elegantly presented with a classic creamy leaf pattern on top, and the dark brown stuff below was rich and darkly roasted to low-acid perfection. That's important if you imbibe your java w/out sugar, as I do (even espresso), so it has to be good and the beans not burnt (I'm talking to you, Starbucks!) if I am to savor the layered aromas and nuanced flavor notes of a well-made cup. Those beans travel thousands of miles to reach you, after all, so treat them right, people! But ... while the coffee here was great, my $6.50 lunch special of soup and mesclun side salad was disappointing. The lentil soup was watery and uninspired (Bytes has better soups on campus) and the salad was over-dressed and a bit drippy. Admittedly, I am spoiled by the green geniuses at Happy Boy Farms who make the best mesclun mix in the Bay area, so good in fact that we prefer to eat it raw w/out even olive oil, sea salt, or lemon juice. So I hate it when people ruin an otherwise crisp and munchy salad by drowning those precious leaves in mayonnaise-based glop (that's for your french fries, folks. Ask any Belgian. They know). And lentil soups need some exotic spices, like cloves or cardamon (dal-style). They could definitely benefit from some fresh herbs - like cilantro, chives, dill, or parsley - to accentuate the starchy, protein-spiked goodness contained in the precious pulses that are the main ingredient here. So, my advice is to try the coffees, teas, and pastries first and - if you like them - explore the savory side of things as well. You may be yodeling "Yahoo!" like I did in the midst of my caffeine high. But try to avoid the lines! That's a real buzz-kill when it comes to eating out, even at the Y2E2, I should think. read more

I'm not sure why anyone would come here as opposed to the other Coupa on campus (by Green Library) - it's about a dollar per item more on average, and although the selection is a little bigger (notably they have arepas here and not at the other one), the food tastes about the same or even worse. This location has indoor seating, although it's very crowded and at the lunch rush you'll have to wait awhile to order and get your food. My boyfriend's turkey panini came out pretty promptly. He said the first half was pretty good, but the second half was absolutely soaked in a spicy mustard sauce that squirted all over him when he bit into the sandwich. He said it overpowered the sandwich, and he wished it had been more evenly distributed between the two halves. My nutella pancakes took forever to come out. Finally, after my boyfriend was DONE eating his panini, he went and investigated and got them brought out to us. They were pretty cold, so it was clear they had been sitting awhile. Other than the temperature, they were pretty good, although I'm not sure paying 50 extra cents for nutella was worth it (just a small dab of nutella on top of the stack). But there were 3 pancakes and they were decent-sized, so I didn't feel ripped off. Come here if you want arepas or are set on sitting indoors - otherwise the other location on campus is much better - less crowded, lower prices, and comparable food. read more

Really enjoyed their goat cheese salad and caprese panini. If you visit coupa during peak lunch hour (12-1:30), expect to spend 30 minutes standing in line and waiting for food. If you order online, you can cut the time to 10-15 minutes. Their website often slows down significantly during lunchtime, so I'd recommend logging on a bit beforehand and specifying you want your food ready a bit later. An interesting observation ... the prices for the Y2E2 online are higher than the prices for the Green library location.... for the same items.... read more

I stumbled upon this cafe back in the summer but I never went in because I was always on a mission to get an Ike's Place sandwich (both of these cafes/ sandwich shops are in the new Stanford engineering campus). Fast-forward 3 months and I am back at Stanford working my winter break job. Unfortunately almost everything is closed at Stanford during this time, but Coupa Cafe was open and I am glad it was. I ordered 2 paninis (one for myself and one for my mom). The panini bread is amazing, the panini filling is okay and the salad that come with each panini was terrible. Overall this place isn't bad but if you are in the engineering campus and you want a sandwich then go to Ike's Place. read more

When craving a quick coffee while working or studying near the engineering quad, Coupa used to be our go-to. They serve a variety of coffee, our favorites being the spice mocha (his) and the double iced macchiato (hers). There's also a neat selection of pastries and sandwiches, though you should probably stay away from the pre-packaged 'Stroopwafel'; they're no match for the really Dutch ones! That's really the only thing we can complain about though. Since it can get really busy during lunch hours, show up early. Otherwise, the wait shouldn't be too long, making Coupa the perfect place for a quick caffeinated afternoon pick-me-up or snack (try their hummus)! read more

Worst service ever. During lunch time, this place is pretty busy. I understand that most of the eateries on campus are crowded during lunch. However, Coupa's system is the worst among all the places. I've ordered a salad to go and waited more than 20 minutes. I realized that people behind me already got their food and asked if my order has gone through. Then they realize that they forgot my order and took a salad out of the refrige window. I've been waiting for 20 minutes for the salad which has darkened avocados and is not fresh at all. I'm upset not only becuase of the long time for waiting but also their food quality and services. If they were going to give me that "old" salad, they should have asked me when I place an order. Coupa's order system and service are desperate, and I'll not go there for lunch anymore. read more

Coupa is very overpriced. They are constantly raising prices. For example, the fruit cups are the same price as a year ago - but the container is now half the size. The location in Huang Engineering is terrible. The coffee is rarely fresh (sometimes cold). The staff are rude. When you approach the counter to pay for your items, their #1 concern is to finish their text message. They are constantly texting on their phones - never paying attention to what you ordered. They will get the wrong item out of the display or charge you incorrectly because they are just trying to get back to their very important text messages. read more

I stop in nearly every morning, the employees are super friendly and the espresso drinks are excellent (regular coffee is just okay). For everyone who likes lattes, I highly recommend ordering the marrón for that extra punch of espresso. Also, you should get the Coupa card and put several dollars, like $50 or so, on it so that you don't have to reload every other day. Overall, I love having this place on campus, especially since they have and train some of the best Batistas around. read more

When this place moved into Stanford's Y2E2 building I was skeptical. It's a tiny place, the only food and more importantly caffeine source in such a big academic building, how will it keep up? It turns out this little cafe that could will puff along just fine! Full of a spirit that definitely generates more than the Venezuelan estate coffee it serves, Coupa Cafe has the population at Y2E2 firmly entranced! The cafe is packing through out the day. You know you're close to Y2E2 by the numbers of passersby holding Coupa Cafe cups. International music verberates from the place almost constantly along with a vibe and an energy that is youthful and down-to-earth. The salads are scrumptious, the coffee will get you going at the first whiff and the staff is fun. Coupa Cafe is a nice addition to Stanford. read more

Nice selection for such a small place. Pretty expensive, though. Still, considering it's on campus, it's pretty average. The vegetarian spinach crepe is my go-to. Thought I'd be different and get a goat cheese omelette with sundried tomatoes instead today. That impulse was not rewarded. It's okay, but way too much goat cheese and the piece of bread seemed almost stale. But the little cup of fruit is nice. During the school year, if we weren't forced to have a meal plan with meal plan dollars, I'd much rather eat here or CoHo than a RD&E place. read more

This place completes their food orders quickly (made well too) and the coffee is good/strong. I would recommend the egg plant Panini; however sometimes they make it big or small, they are not consistent with the portions. Note that you have to request the free salad with your Panini otherwise they won't give it to you! There is also limited seating (compared to the one at GSB) and the area gets filled pretty quickly. read more
