The pistachio baklava latte was perfect, and don't even get me started on their pastries - the leek parmesan thing they have and butter croissant were *chef's kiss*. I got a double espresso and an oat milk macchiato and both were good. I was glad they served them in glasses. The espresso is strong, acidic (a little more than I would prefer, but good if you like that), and smooth. Well dialed in. Macchiato was well made. Such a cozy outdoor cafe! I've come here twice on Sundays around 6 or 7 PM and never have an issue finding a table. There are quite a number of people working or studying, and they do have free wifi (not sure if they have outlets though). The front entrance is located right next to Terun and is this cool alleyway with murals. You can also enter from the back, which connects to the street next to the parking garage but it's not as cool. The service here is good. The people working here are friendly and inviting. I've gotten the Nutella Mocha, which is a bit heavier but is to be expected with the Nutella. Creamy and rich but still can taste the coffee. I've also gotten the Banana Bread Latte, which was strong in cinnamon taste. Didn't really remind me of banana bread but it was still good if you like cinnamon. I also got a Parmesan and Leek Pastry and my partner got a Pain Au Chocolat. The pastries felt a bit dry and stale and not the freshest. Maybe it's because I came so late in the evening. All in all, I will be coming back here since it's such a nice spot to get some work done or read. I will probably stick to the drinks moreso than food though. read more

I've had this place bookmarked to check out and finally was down the street to check it out. Walked through the hallway and found the menu right before you enter. It was late in the afternoon so opted for a Chai to not be overly caffeinated LOL. Ordering was a breeze and had to use the restroom that was off to the side while I waited. I could smell coffee beans roasting and when I walked out I saw a man roasting coffee beans. Backyard Brews is a hidden gem in the alleys right off of California Ave. The road has been secured for al dente dining, so the road to get here IS somewhat closed to the public -- however, DO NOT FEAR! This coffee shop is bustling and is quite outdoors like no other. The serene sound of the fountains and the hustle and bustle of local businesses bring buzz and light to this hidden gem. I love how it despite being outdoors, they still worked hard to make the best banana bread latte and croissant. Despite it being a little small, it didn't really matter much because the coffee beans that they used were quite "arabica".... with really strong coffee smell. It gives a sense of community, and the coffee shop wasn't too crowded at all. Stopped by for a quick drink and it was good! I got a Nutella chocolate from the Non-caffeinated section and it was smooth, creamy and just the right amount of chocolate. I couldn't decide between hot or cold so I asked them which they recommended, they said that the hot was better because it was a cold day so it was a nice recommendation! There are a lot of seats and tables so you can work here. The Wi-Fi is a little spotty though. It is semi- outdoors. U can find this alleyway right before Teruñ where an outdoor coffee bar and patio is tuck away like a secret. The alleyway is covered in art which is a very cool walkway for a very cool almost hidden coffee bar! Once u enter, there r many small tables and chairs with umbrellas mostly in the shade and even more seating outside the back gate which is a relief bc almost all of them were filled in the main way. There is a small counter where u order and various specialty lattes which i am usually inclined to ordering. I went with the Desert Rose latte with almond milk and it was very unique! Tasted of spices and rose flavoring and was not too sweet which is how i like my lattes. The lavender oolong tea was delicious and flavorful as well. The location of this spot is a little hard to find since it is literally like a backyard and is located right by a parking structure. I like the set up of it though. I didn't want anything with too much caffeine so I went with their tumeric chai which came out perfect. I like that their lattes aren't sweeten with too much sugar. My girlfriend got their desert rose latte which she said is her go to drink there. My husband got an Americano which he enjoyed. I like that they had drinks you can't really get anywhere else. This is a cute coffee shop nestled in the heart of California Avenue. The outdoor ambience and location are unbeatable! I came here on a Saturday afternoon in August to do some work - I love how they have wifi and outlets (which I generally wouldn't expect from an outdoor coffee shop). The atmosphere definitely gives backyard vibes - you have the typical backyard fencing surrounding the area, with tents for shade, and outdoor furniture. The coffee shop being outdoors has its pros and cons - it's nice to get fresh air, but it can get uncomfortable depending on the weather. I went when it was ~85 degrees outside - it was definitely warm even under the shade. Now for the drinks: I got the Raw Mocha iced, which was really good! Most coffee shops serve very sweet mochas, but this place uses unsweetened chocolate! You can probably have them add sweetener if you prefer, but I loved the taste of the unsweetened mocha! They have lots of other interesting drink options - I'm hoping to try something new during my next visit! There is a huge parking structure directly across this coffee spot, so parking shouldn't be an issue! Tucked behind an alley and near the California Avenue Caltrain Station, Backyard Brew is a hidden 60's oasis with some of the most unique coffee flavors that I've tried. Some of my favorites: Nutella mocha Oh Canada! (Maple) Desert Rose I also love their breakfast burrito, which is filled with the fluffiest egg, and a yummy, refreshing salsa. Personally, I'm not the biggest fan of dining in, since there tends to be spotty shade coverage and the back area is not exactly the cleanest (there are a lot of flies flying around). Such a fun cafe! Hidden behind the buildings, Backyard Brew is truly giving the backyard vibes. I love that it is down an alleyway with some really cool art along the walls. Almost like it's a treat that's there for those who are willing to look. Once you get to the back, there's tons of seating in lots of different separated areas of the cafe - by the fountain, under the canopy, on the side of the coffee bar, etc. I went on a Sunday afternoon after the farmers market was done so I didn't encounter any long lines or huge crowds. They have QR codes everywhere so you could order online or you can place your order directly at the cashier. I was a little confused with the online ordering system though. If I clicked on customer creations or signature it didn't pull up the options I saw on the paper menu. But since there wasn't a line, I ended up just ordering at the cashier. Went with a regular iced latte and regular it was - good for sure and as you'd expect an iced latte to taste. It was prepared pretty quickly so we were in and out in 10 minutes tops.
