Updated - I am updating this review from 1 star to 4 because although I was disappointed with the food, Coupa responded to my review immediately and credited me back for the food and a bit more. I will give it another try because of the excellent customer service! Initial Review - Horrible, I have eaten here for years but it has been about 6-8 months since the last time. I ordered their turkey BLT panini, which used to be great, and it was awful. Cheap wet deli meat turkey, cold under-cooked bacon, cold shredded cheddar, the bread was barely warm and certainly not a toasted and pressed panini. The cheese did not melt at all and was falling out all over the place. It was really bad. Their salads have also gone downhill. I always ordered the arugula and avocado salad and it has also gotten skimpy. I will not be ordering any of their panini's again and it's questionable if I'll even try the salad. This little spot was a very nice surprise. I have been spending a lot of time at the Stanford Hospital caring a family member and the cafeteria food can get very redundant. I love that this little cafe is about a halfmile walk, or a mile walk to and from total to the hospital. I merely ordered a small cappuccino. the food looked very good and they seemed to always have quite a few people enjoying their food outside. It is easy to miss. There is a very cool public sculpture of giant stone globes from around the world in the outside area in front of the cafe. If you see those stones you know you're in the right area. Falsely advertise food as gluten free! As someone with celiac disease, this was very dangerous. I do not appreciate the lack of communication and dishonesty. Instead, they should be honest that all food is cooked with flour and other gluten particles in the same frier/stove without any separation between the food! I love Coupa's smoothies (especially the matcha one!) but today I had a rather unpleasant experience and I don't think I'll be returning for the foreseeable future. I placed my order for a matcha smoothie at the inside POS, noticing that there was already a smoothie that had been sitting at the pick-up counter for a while. The barista immediately gave me said smoothie, stating that it's purchaser had grabbed the wrong drink earlier and she "didn't want to make another one." Fine, I get it, I've worked in food service and I hate wasting stuff too. I take it, and upon tasting it, it's clear that it's been sitting out there for a while and it's completely melted. I politely asked if she could make a new one since I didn't want to pay $5.25 for an old, melted drink. She agreed and waited until I walked away before taking the old smoothie, blending it with a little more milk and ice (honestly I'm not even sure if she added ice), and handing it back to me. Needless to say, it was still melted and unappetizing. My mistake was not tasting it until I had left so I ended up throwing it down the drain, along with my money. I've never written a review before, but this incident ticked me off since I normally love Coupa. Time to try CoHo I suppose. read more

I love this place! I'm so glad Coupa Cafe opened up on campus. It's right next to my office, and I think it has the best coffee on campus. The guayoyo (americano) is really strongest and doesn't have any sour bitterness. The elephant chai latte is also extremely delicious, and I love that they do latte art! I also like coming here for lunch since their paninis and crepes are all really good. The crepes are slightly chewy buckwheat ones. read more

A surprisingly good lunch option on Stanford's campus, Coupa Cafe goes beyond your typical salads and sandwiches and offers some more interesting options like arepas as well! On my recent visit, I got the reina pepiada arepa, which was a Venezuelan chicken salad with mayo and avocado stuffed inside a cornmeal pocket. Amazing! The chicken salad was nice and moist, while the cornmeal pocket had a good chew and texture to it. The arepa went so well with the slightly spicy guasacaca sauce on the side, and the dish came with a simple side salad with a tangy dressing as well! Nice! read more

Decent cafe option if you're near the Stanford engineering quad. The coffee and drink options are all good--- so are the sandwiches and salads. I'm not a big fan of their arepas; I find them dry and flavorless. I also strongly dislike their breakfast sandwiches and burritos, which contain an excessive amount of overcooked and under-seasoned scrambled eggs. I don't understand how any self-respecting food establishment can serve those monstrosities to people. In short, stay away from the eggs and you'll be fine. One can walk in and order drip coffee and sandwich and it can take up to 30 mins to receive. I have a ton of compassion for the staff who are doing their best to juggle online orders, in person lines and the like. This little cafe is located on the engineering side of campus in y2e2. It is near Ike's sandwich and conveniently located next to a parking structure. I often come here in the morning for a late breakfast. They have a pretty expansive menu for a little cafe. The croissant sandwich with ham cheese and egg is one my favorites here. It's around $8 and comes with a side of fruits. They are also well known for the assortment of crepes and coffee. They make little designs in their lattes (I've seen birds, "coupa cafe" spelled out before). The line can get quite long but don't be discouraged because it moves quickly. There is also ample seating because it is located in the engineering building so there are tables and couches to sit down at and enjoy your meal. If you're sick of eating at Nexus or the line at Ike's is unbearable, then come to Coupa! There's a good amount of seating indoors and outdoors. So far I've been here twice and I'm loving it as a new place for lunch on campus. I've had the pesto chicken crepe which was very filling. It's enough for 2 people. The chicken was a bit dry though. And I've also had the rosemary chicken panini. The bread was delicious but again the chicken was on the dry side. Portions are filling. Coffee is decent, but the service is hit or miss, especially around lunch. You'll often wonder where your order is only to find it chilling behind the counter. Avoid the paninis; I'm staring at my rosemary chicken panini, and the chicken looks like it came out of a microwave about an hour ago (see picture). There's no dressing, the cheese is exuding some sort of moisture, and there is a single piece of discolored rosemary draped unceremoniously across the chicken. Also, it tastes terrible. Yikes. On the other hand, I've had really delicious crepes, both savory (rosemary chicken) and sweet (honey) that were worth the wait. Overall I like Coupa Cafe and can't complain too much about it since the food is good but the problem is that the service is extremely slow. Do yourself a favor and don't go at 12pm otherwise you'll be standing in line forever. I would probably give it a 3.5 overall but that rounds to 4 stars and not 3. Besides the slow service, the other reason that I would give it just below 4 is that they never get my substitutions correct. Not sure if the register is just that complicated but they often spend a long time seemingly unsure of how to add quinoa or bacon and then when I get the salad I undoubtedly end up with some other addition that I didn't ask for. Anyway, moral of the story is - the place is fine for a quick lunch, and you shouldn't be disappointed by the food but the wait time may not be ideal depending on when you get there. read more

Located in one of Stanford's main engineering buildings, this Coupa location is very central and easily accessible by hoards of students. During peak times (e.g. 12-12:30), it can get really busy. The servers are kind and try their best to serve you in a timely manner. The coffee and tea are decent. Anything that's latte-like tends to be overly sweet, so consider asking for it to be made less sweet if that's not your thing. The food: the cost to value ratio for salads are terrible. I don't understand how they get away with charging $10+ for salads that come with barely anything. I would much rather go to Trader Joe's and buy a prepackaged salad than come here. Or better yet, I'd just make my own with much more interesting ingredients. Sandwiches are a bit more filling, but the flavors just don't cut it for me. I've heard the arepas are the best thing to get here, but I've been so put off by my salad and sandwich experiences that I'm hesitant to try other food items here. I'd recommend coming for basic drinks, but for food, you're better off going to the food trucks outside Y2E2. read more

I just recently started coming to Coupa during lunch breaks since I normally get really lazy and end up at Clark Center or CCSR. BUT, this place is definitely worth the trek to Y2E2. The panini's are pretty good, and my favorite dish is the Chicken pesto Crepe. The filling for the crepe is amazing, with mushrooms and moist chicken and filled with flavorful pesto sauce. It's a really light lunch too, and you definitely feel full, but not comatose afterwards. I always pair my meal with an iced coffee drink from Coupa, especially during the warm summer days. The coffee is pretty good as well, better than the alternative peet's or starbucks nearby. Overall, Y2E2 is a pretty nice place to eat, with a small patio area outside of the cafe. This Coupa is tucked away in one of the newer engineering buildings on campus. It's right across from the parking structure on Via Ortega. It's a convenient place to pick up a spicy Maya hot chocolate or mocha. They seem to have the same menu as the other Coupas I've been to (by Green Library and downtown) - breakfast (eggs, baked goods, fruit, yogurt), lunch (paninis, soup, salad) and full espresso menu. When I walk by on the way to work, the line isn't really long. Later in the day however, it can take awhile. It's a little cramped inside, with a few tables and chairs commandeered by students and their laptops. There's also covered seating outside, which is awesome when it's warm. My favorite items are the chicken paninis, salad nicoise (the lemon vinaigrette is awesome!) and the spicy Maya drinks. You can also order online to pick-up (skip the line). read more

Co-worker loved the cappuccino and felt it was of sufficient strength. Oh Y2E2 Coupa. How well I know thee... As a PhD student who basically lives in this building its needless to say I've been here a LOT. Much more than my check-ins indicate. Let's get started Ambiance: Its set in the 'lobby' area of an academic building so there's a lot of hustle and bustle from students, professors, and other visitors. There is plenty of outdoor seating which is always a plus for bay area weather. It can get pretty crowded during mealtimes but otherwise it's pretty great. Service: The service here has always been good. I really appreciate that Stanford uses real plates and silverware which not only cuts down on waste but makes the meal seem nicer. During busy times someone will take orders in the line which speeds things up dramatically. Food: This is why they get docked 1 star. For food on a college campus its terrible to slowly watch the quality decline as the price increases. For one, there is another Coupa cafe near Green Library which has cheaper options. Secondly, I've watched as chicken breast in the mediterranean panini slowly get thinner and thinner until it looks like a slice of deli meat. In addition, the price at this place is slowly increasing even while these shortcuts become more and more apparent. As someone who eats here on a weekly basis, these things are really noticeable. *sigh, Coupa management. Please stop doing this. We can all tell.... Overall, because of its location I always somehow end up here due to tight schedules or whatnot, but I'd definitely be here more should the food situation be improved. read more

Ordered my very first cup of Tiger Spice Chai @ Coupa on campus (and only b/c Antonia D. says its her FAVORITE). It is VERY sweet, but a nice mix of spice and creaminess-- in fact, I think it tastes like a very creamy gingerbread latte. While it was good, I'm not sure I'd order it again. The roasted corn salad looked very tempting, but I was too cheap to spend $5 (also I was going to have dinner about an hour later...). Medium cup came out to $3. If you order to-go, I think your portion is slightly bigger... but maybe its just an illusion... read more

I'm not a big coffee fan, even if I do get coffee, I don't understand the subtleties. So my review here is on the food.... and it is not worth it. The only reason it gets my 2 stars is because its 1) conveniently located where all my classes are and 2) The choclate croissant is delish! Otherwise, you are overpaying for small portions of dry and bland food. And at lunch, the lines are LOOONNGGG. You have to wait +20 minutes to order and then another +20 mins to get your food.,.maybe less if the waiters can find out easily enough. Pesto Chicken Crepe - SMALL crepe for +$7. Barely a snack's worth of food. Cheese was cold. BARELY any pesto. Chicken was dry. Salad was not dressed evenly. Mozerella & Tomato Arepas - came out warm, but at $5 a piece?! these are some DAMN expensive sandwiches. salad was slightly better this time. Though I have to say, the mozerella slices were nice and thick but not seasoned well. Thus far, my best expereince with Coupa here on campus is the half sandwich, soup or salad. Choose two of the 3 for $6.50. I got the Mediterranean panni half with soup (for my cold). The Mediterranean was made well. I would have gotten the sandwich in its whole, but the plate costs $8.50! I work in the Huang Engineering Center, and have been to the neighboring Coupa Cafe many times, especially for lunch. Service here is friendly enough, although they're usually just trying to pedal you through so that they can get to the next customer standing in the line stretching out into the space outside the library. It's a campus eatery, and there's not much ambiance here. That said, there's a copious amount of seating just outside the cafe in Y2E2, and wooden chairs and tables are lined all over the area. As for the food and beverages... I have ordered tea and hot chocolate there in the past, but I honestly don't remember how it was, and it's so seldom when I order their beverages, so this review will be entirely on the food. Obviously the tea and hot chocolate doesn't impress me enough to want to order it more, but short of that, I can't remember my precise objections to it. Unfortunately, the food leaves a lot to be desired, as most of it is pretty underwhelming. I think my favorite one so far, one that can't be screwed up, is the ham and cheese crepe. In the past, I've had the smoked salmon crepe as well, and it's just pretty bland. Nothing really brings out the smokiness of the salmon. I've also had their goat cheese salad, which is just okay. The goat cheese is the highlight of it, but even that doesn't have a very strong flavor, the way that goat cheese should. Coupa is my go-to cafe when I can't hit the Starbucks drive-thru on my way to work. I prefer Coupa to the on-campus Starbucks for several reasons: 1. Coupa serves cow's milk, soy milk, AND almond milk, which is ideal for someone like me who is allergic to both dairy AND soy. (I know. My life is terrible.) 2. Coupa makes a spicy hot chocolate that is TO. DIE. FOR. 3. Coupa has better pastries. See my tip about their raspberry and almond croissants. 4. Coupa serves legit breakfast. Not just the aforementioned fantastic pastries, but also crepes, omelettes, etc. 5. Coupa serves lunch. The Background: A cosy and packed coffee shop in downtown Palo Alto, this is definitely one of the best places there. Like everyone else has said, the elephant chai is really quite fantastic. The Positives: The two great things about this place are the chai and the venezulean food. While the crepes and pancakes are good, all of the venezuelean dishes I've had there have been phenomenal. Also, in case none of the reviews have tipped you off, the elephant chai is REALLY REALLY good. Get some, you won't regret it. Similar menu to the one on Ramona in a much smaller kitchen. It's really amazing all they can cook up in such a small working area. The seating is outside the restaurant area (in Y2E2 seating area, so it seems) and is very spacious. I can definitely see service becoming slow during busy hours simply because of its high demand. It should be noted that the prices at this location are actually a few bucks cheaper than the one on Ramona, which is nice for students. The hours are a little later too than the other restaurants nearby (I believe Bytes closes 2 hrs earlier) which is good for an early dinner if you're going to work late in lab. I think the main complaint about Coupa on campus is that the prices aren't sustainable for many students, especially graduate students. It's a very nice restaurant with very nice food, so this isn't really a complaint that can be resolved -- I would love to enjoy a $30 steak everyday but it's my fault if I can't do this everyday! This, however, is the reason for the 4-stars instead of 5. The location is on campus, so I would not expect to spend more than $8 for lunch. Perhaps they could offer some less expensive, more filling options...even if less tasty! If you do go there, I would recommend any of their pesto items, including the crepe and pasta. I've tried both of these, and they are amazing. In my opinion, puts Pasta?'s penne giannino to shame. Also, the pre-lemoned water is a nice touch =). read more
