Nestled in the heart of Silicon Valley and known for their famous coffee cake. Hobee's is next to the Hilton Garden Inn where I stayed over night. I had the cheesy scramble that comes with their famous coffee cake. The scramble was delicious and oh so cheesy. I had their original blueberry coffee cake topped with butter. The first bite of the coffee cake was dry but upon more bites the flavor sat in and I knew why it was a favorite. The added melted butter was different but delicious. I asked for hot tea and upon drinking from the tea cup it was chipped. I'm glad I didn't sip from that side of the tea cup. That was a huge turn off. We stayed at a hotel next door and visited for lunch, and we liked it so much we came back the next morning for breakfast. They have a great variety of choices, lots of vegetarian options, bowls, sweet breakfasts, sandwiches, etc. I can't imagine anyone not being able to choose something off the menu. Service was friendly, a little slow at times but not bad. Coffee was surprisingly good for a diner. I enjoyed both my meals - I had a lunch bowl with salmon and a breakfast bowl with poached eggs over potatoes. My husband had an omelet and then a breakfast burrito. With some breakfasts you can choose to get the blueberry coffee cake with your breakfast and it was massive and delicious, especially with butter. I think it would be better if it were half as tall, it seems like there is too much cake vs. topping. The place is super old school and looks like it's been there since the 50s. Came in and were greeted warmly. Seated by the window and allowed to peruse the updated menu. BDBIT (best darn breakfast in town!) was still on the menu. As were the hash brown scrambles. Today I got a simple tofu scramble. Perfectly cooked, with home fries, and my choice of hot sauce and KETCHUP!! I have to try beloved local institutions to assess the hype. I ordered the florentine scramble mainly because it came with a side of the famous blueberry coffee cake. So awful. We were looking for a brunch place that felt cozy and comfortable, especially remembering Hoobee's and how good their coffee cake used to be. Unfortunately, this visit was a complete disappointment. The food was terrible. The coffee tasted like burned dishwater and was nothing like the delicious coffee they once served. The place itself was dirty. The carpet was filthy, the bathroom was unclean, and the overall environment felt neglected. They even had space heaters sitting on the floor, which made it seem like the building does not have proper central heat. It felt uncomfortable and unwelcoming. I am so glad Hobee's is still around and appears to be thriving. They have been a Bay Area institution my entire life, and it is no secret that their coffeecake is to die for! On my most recent trip, I brought home the pumpkin coffee cake, as they were out of tins for the blueberry (or there was only a giant tin available, and I had no room in my bag). Regardless, delicious. Re entree, last time I think I got the turkey burger, anyone who follows me will be unsurprised to learn I couldn't finish it, and my friend helped me. It is so hard to decide, I have never had a bad meal at Hobee's. I think I would go for a scramble if it was breakfast. The chili kicks ass as well. Came here for brunch on a Sunday morning with a friend and got seated pretty quickly after arriving at 10 am! Food was pretty good, but the hashbrown had a bit of an oily aftertaste that I wasn't a huge fan of. I got the DotCom omelette with an extra coffee cake to-go. A tip for the chef: when cooking a tofu scramble, first sauté the spices; don't dump a bunch of raw spices on top of the tofu. I got their tofu scramble and at first bite, I spit into my napkin, it was gross and inedible, sharp and acidic, the spicing not cooked. Shockingly bad. Not wanting to waste it, my husband, bless his little heart, folded it into bread, and ate it as a sandwich. The menu reads that it comes with "hash browns," but it's really breakfast potatoes, cubed and sauteed, which is fine--but they need to specify this. They also list the dish as coming with a garlic ciabatta, but it's just bread that's more like a french garlic bread wannabe. Their sweet potato power bowl with veggies and goat cheese was a bit better but not by much. The veggie penne pasta was bland enough to have been boiled with dishwater, insipid and tasteless, no effort put into the dish. The coffee cake was good, light airy and high, not overly sweet. It was the only great thing about the meal. In hopes of reviving it and giving some life, I took the pasta home. I had to do a LOT of life to life resuscitation: added garlic olive oil, anchovies, lemon zest and juice, shallots, pepper, Kalamata olives and sun-dried tomatoes, creamed tofu (for vegan) ... and finished with fresh oregano. That's a lot of work to bring the flavor up to snuff. By the time I was done with the original Hobees penne, it was a transformed alchemical magic trick. The customer service was good, efficient and fast, we sat in their patio, which is their parking lot converted to a tented outdoor seating. The prices would be fine, if only their food lived up to some edible standard. I forced myself to eat some of the sweet potato, but only because I needed something solid to take my meds with. I'm not sure what happened to this place. I remember yesteryear fondly., many many years ago, more than a decade, when it used to be good, generous portions of heaping plates full of vibrant vegetables and well-cooked dishes. It's possible that we ordered the wrong dishes? Maybe if we got egg stuff or pancakes or French toast ... still, the tofu scramble indicates that something is seriously off in the kitchen,: they don't know to introduce the tofu to the already sautéed spices--not the other way around and any chef/cook would know this. It's bizarre. I can't recommend this place, not even if you're desperate. Good customer service goes a long way with me, which is why I'm not rating it as a one star. read more

The food was good I had their classic Benedict and my wife had their Mountain View Omelette subbed bell peppers for spinach. She loved it as well. We also got a side of one of their special of the day which was what they called "candied bacon" (8 pieces for $14.00) it wasn't really candied in my opinion and usually candied bacon is made with thick cut bacon and then basically caramelized with sugar this one was basically regular thing bacon strips with like hot honey on top. Literally the only reason why I have them 4 stars. I believe the franchise Hobee's is diying down. Service wasn't that great, they seemed to have a lot of regular customers and their service was top notch but for all the other customers that weren't not regulars it seemed like the food was taking longer to come out as well as the drinks. The ambiance included a lot of older folks in there, run down place and very limited hours but with all of that being said their food was not disappointing and tasty. My wife tried ny side which coffee cake (I did not try it) and said it was dried and she had their Gouda grits as her side and they were tasty also we ended up chopping up the last two bacons strips and threw them in the grits and they were even better. We went on a Friday around 12:30pm-1:00pm they had 3 servers and 5 two tops, 2 one tops and a large party of about 8-12 guests. I felt like they could have been a little more efficient. read more

Interesting spot with a little of everything. This review is focused on the pasta side of things. One of the luxuries of garlic bread with pasta is to soak up extra sauce, but there wasn't any extra sauce to work with. I got Danny's Chicken Pasta and while tasty, that's because most pasta is delicious. It was pretty average in the scheme of things. I'd order it again but would rather try other stuff just to have the opportunity of something better. Danny's Chicken Pasta - a solid amount of cheese on top but no sauce so the entree is a bit dry. Mostly pasta and cheese with some bits of meat sauce but not enough to really impact the dish. Fettuccini pasta which was delicious but overall the pasta was average and could be less dry. read more

Last Sunday's service was the last straw for me, we sat in the patio, table was unset, staff brought the settings and placed on the table for us to set...during our meal, No one asked if all was ok or anything needed. Fair warning the hash browns are actually more like just potatoes so just so you know going in. My blueberry coffee cake never came with my food so I had to ask for it at the end with the check. Big portions so I didn't really miss it much but it would've been good to have everything come out at once. The inside was decorated with Halloween decorations and had a very cozy feel. Came here for brunch at the suggestion of a coworker who raved about their coffee cake. I was NOT expecting the coffee cake to be GIGANTIC! It honestly felt like it could be an entree on its own.
