HRW 2013 Lamb Meatballs with Tzaziki sauce
    David B.

My wife and I went here for HRW 2013. The menu they had sounded fantastic and we both knew we would regret not going here if we didn't give it a try. It feels weird walking into a school knowing you are going there for a nice meal. The decor is very minimal and nothing fancy at all. We were greeted at the hostess stand and shown to our table. There are only about 20 tables at most in the place. Our waitress we had was not good at all. She didn't ask us for our drinks, took forever to take our food order and just was really bad through the whole dinner service. I know these are students and they are learning, but she needs a whole lot of work still. The food was better than the service at least, well some dishes were anyway. The amuse bouche was not very good and I would skip it next time. The bread they bring out is pretty good though and we were hungry so it went down well. 1st course was the lamb meatballs and the pork belly. The lamb meatballs were very good and one of the best things from the meal. They were very tender and had nice flavor. The tzaziki sauce went well with the meatballs. The pork belly was cooked well and had good texture and flavor. The langostine it was served with was delicious. It was nice and tender and not overcooked. 2nd course was the grilled pineapple and quail salad for us both. This one was a fail all the way around. Do not get this if you see it on the menu. For entree, we had the veal osso bucco and the ribeye. The entree portions were huge and my wife could not finish hers. The veal was melt in your mouth tender and had great flavor. The ribeye was a little tough, but had a good taste. It was served with french fries and grilled asparagus. The veal was the better of the two dishes. For dessert, I had the sticky toffee pudding and my wife had the homemade vanilla bean ice cream with toasted lemon pound cake. The sticky toffee pudding was extremely sweet. Very rich and heavy. The ice cream and pound cake was a lot lighter and a nice ending to the meal. I am glad we came and gave this place a try. About 1/2 of the dishes we tried were good the other 1/2 not so much. I probably will not return.

Mixed green salad @ Art Institute Courses Restaurant

Ok, granted this is a culinary cooking restaurant. However, I figured for students who are about to graduate , the food could have been much better. Don't get me wrong......... SOME of the courses were good...but not "over-the-moon". First things first. This meal is 6 courses...YEP..that's right, SIX ! The Appetizers :: We had fried calamari , as their black mussels were not up to par to serve..so only fried calamari was served. ( no problem ) However, the batter was falling off, and looked as though they were fried with corn meal. They were *meh*. The Soup:: We had Pasta Fagioli.. basically penne pasta with italian sausage meatballs with cannelloni beans in a tomato broth. VERY tasty ! The Salad :: Mixed greens with red and yellow cherry tomatoes, walnuts, and feta cheese served inside a red cabbage leaf..and dressed with a creamy vinaigrette. YUM ! The Pasta :: Langostino with linguini, served with herbs and parmesan cheese. They serve the pasta with langostino meat already incorporated and also with one whole langostino aside the pasta. Nice looking presentation. The pasta was ok.. not great , but not bad either. The Intermezzo :: ( palette cleanser ) Raspberry sorbet with orange liquer. Nice. The Entree :: ARE YOU FULL YET ?!......... I am ! LOL The Entree :: Husband had Veal with gnocchi in a brown gravy. It tasted very much like "Beef stew ". It tasted good, though. I had the seared Tuna Steak served over a mashed butternut squash. The tuna steak had chimichurri on top which I loved. The steak was seasoned well, but it was so heavy.I ate a few bites of it and was done, but I finished the squash. and finalllllllllllyyyyy The Dessert :: Tiramisu *sigh* Not only was it not good looking, but it didn't taste worth a thing ! The lady fingers were drenched so heavily in brandy, that they were mushy . I found a piece of the second cookie that wasn't loaded with brandy and it was crunchy...but overall, the dessert was not good ,,AT ALL ! All in all, I can't complain... We had a 6 course meal for only $35.00 per person..so $70. bucks for the husband and I , and we were beyond FULL ! I would go back..and I would recoommend this spot to others. Each week is a different menu, so why not ! I will get a chance to try all kinds of culinary cuisines for not a lot of money.

    Salty butter!!!

Well, I wasn't expecting perfection because I knew these were students that were learning, but some of the food was inedible. Luckily we didn't pay much for our meal, thanks to Groupon. The FOOD: - Bread and Butter: The butter was so salty that you could feel the salt granules in between your teeth. I took one bite and literally, could not eat another crumble. Rating: 1 - French Onion Soup: Pretty good, very flavorful and hearty. Rating: 4 - Haricot Vert Salad: You could tell this was pre-made, sitting in the refrigerator, served on a cold plate. Not very good. Rating: 2 - Coquille St. Jacque: Not sure if it was the preparation or the quality of the scallops, but they were watery and fishy. I couldn't eat more than one bite. Rating: 1 - Salpion of Wild Mushrooms: This was pretty good! Rating: 4 - Lemon-Lime Sorbet: this tasted like an Italian Ice. It was ok, just too lemony for me: Rating: 3 - Duck a la Orange: This was by far the thing I was most impressed with. Usually duck can be very dry or very gamey. This was nether. Kudos to the chefs on this one. - Vanilla Bean Éclair: No. This was very dry and the cream was not tasty. Rating: 1 - Cream the Dream: This was way better than the Éclair, but still not top notch. Rating: 3 The SERVICE: The wait staff was very friendly, but not well versed in table service. Our table was set for 4 and with only 2 of us there, I was expecting the other 2 table settings to have been removed. They were not. Also, we had to ask for refills on water a lot. The ATMOSPHERE. The atmosphere was very cold and not too welcoming. Some of the plates were dirty as well. OVERALL: We probably won't try this experiment again. First, we got there pretty early for our reservation. We sat almost immediately upon check in. Our waiter was in training but did a really good job. Ordered a whiskey sour. Was seated at the bar so I got to watch it be made. The bartender- man that guy never stopped. He was organized and just did his thing. So many pretty drinks were made while I was there watching. The pink one, whatever it was, was really pretty! On to the food. We got two apps, two meals, and two desserts. Husband ordered the Brussels, Steak Frites, and the Devil's Affogato. I got the Bacon covered Dates, the Pizza, and the Sticky Toffee Cake. The Brussels were good - husband liked them more than me. They were good. Had cashews in them. Little spicy. The bacon covered dates. Think this was my favorite bite. Sweet, salty, creamy. Came we three & I had two. The pizza was sweet and salty as well. The crust was so good and fresh. The arugula set it off so well. Def a buy again! The Steak Frites was so good. The chimichurri sauce was perfect. Just the right mount of citrus. Steak was tender and the fries seasoned well. The desserts - don't skip them! The Devils Affogato we had the first time we ate at Sixty Vines. Had to have it again. If you like coffee, chocolate and vanilla ice cream just get it. Restaurant vibe is relaxed and clean. There were several large parties and what looked like a lot of date night guests. Just try it. No regrets!!

I might have just found one of my new favorite restaurants in Houston. What a great experience!…read more Recently, a good friend dined here and immediately called me to tell me how great it was. She then text our friends group and said we all had to come together and we did just that. She made reservations in advance as this place is popular thanks to recent Michelin Bib Gourmand awards as well as many other accolades. Walk ins are welcome as well. Our reservation was later in the evening so after a night of bar hopping, we ride shared in which I think is one of the best options as parking is limited here or you have to find street parking in the neighborhood. This place is literally a house turned into a restaurant. Inside is just multiple rooms with a couple of tables. It makes for a unique, intimate dining experience, perfect for a date night. In our case, we were a group of nine so we got patio seating. The patio is spacious and well kept, and if the weather cooperates, a great place to hang. One thing that really stood out to me is the amazing ambience of this place. I was told that the bartenders pick the music for the night from the owners extensive vinyl collection. Once the album is in, they play it in it's entirety. The sound system was systeming and on top of the great company and food, we were totally vibing with the music. Customer service was amazing. Every staff member we came across was so friendly, especially our server. The menu here changes. There are some mainstays, but they like to change things up. Their website shows current menus daily. We were told that family style is the best way to experience this restaurant. I am one of those people that will always listen to the staff and go with their suggestions. Our group went through quite a bit of their menu from apps, entrees and desserts. I loved that our server and staff brought our food out one by one in what they thought was the best progression so we could take a culinary journey. We started off light with their popular Dilly Bread. Best bread I've had in awhile. Next was the Texas Tartare. It was my first ever tartare and it was delicious. We then moved on to Fingerlingin Good which was a crispy potato dish with chili crisp and mascarpone. It was potatoes elevated to the highest level and so so good. Next up was Beer Battered Sweet Tots. I didn't think sweet potatoes could be that good. Our first entree was a vegan dish called the Carroty Kid. I could seriously become a vegan if all dishes tasted like this. It was curried. A bowl of jasmine rice would've made it a complete meal. Next we tried another famous Nobie's dish called Nonno's Pasta. Handmade, perfectly cooked tagliatelle with a delicious bolognese. I wouldn't share this next time. Ok, I will, but it was that good. On to the heavier dishes. First up was the Jamon With Your Bad Self. This came highly recommended and it did not disappoint. It was favorite heavy entree. It was high quality, iberico pork steak with shaved brussels and all kinds of other tasty ingredients that when combined made such a tasty bite. We then went to the sea with the Drops of Grouperter. It was good, but not something I would order again. It was a little too smoky for my liking. Our biggest dish that came market priced was the Kick His Ass Seabass. This was a whole fish that was presented beautifully on a platter with all the accouterments to make your own elevated fish tacos. We left no morsel of fish behind. It was absolutely delicious. One of the things this place is really known for is their pies. This was the part I was most excited about. Just like their menu, their pies change up. We got all their offerings that night which they presented on one big platter of goodness. Their main stay and I believe always on the menu is the famous Olive Oil Cake. It's not a pie, but I can see why this is such a popular dessert. I can't even describe it, you just have to try it to understand. The pies we had were the Black Bottom Strawberry Pie, Banana Rum, and the Peanut Butter Pie. I would order all of them again. We all had a difference of opinion on which was the best, but my fave was the Banana Rum. Overall, I was highly impressed with this place and kind of mad at myself for waiting so long to make it here. It had made it's way to the top of my list of favorite restaurants in Houston. I will be back.

Had a 5:30pm resy, seated outside right away that Saturday evening--it was a full house 45 minutes later. You'd be a fool to skip the dilly bread--a complete fool! The rolls are pillowy and warm. I could eat the butter by the pint. The fingerlinging potato dish is also a must have...pretty small for $19 but tastes like heaven. Spicy! Zaddy was being a bit of a clutz that evening and knocked over my $20 mezcal cocktail, so what does he do? Orders me another one! (That's why he's "zaddy") ....kind of wish he hadn't...so wasn't worth the price tag. Skip it. The chicken dinner was definitely the winner--fresh, juicy breast, crispy skin...don't be cute, you won't finish it unless your party has at least 4 in it! The flies were ruthless! Very annoying! They were acting like the geekers that come bother you just outside your favorite fried chicken joint in south Dallas! Our waitress brought out a table fan so that made the experience a little more tolerable. The chocolate peanut butter pie tasted like a salt rock and the lemon chiffon pie had great flavor but not lemony enough for me. All in all this place is a bit pricey but truly a gem! Until next time, Nobie!

The line was long and I almost waited in it not realizing that the actual restaurant was right next door! The restaurant itself was spacious and had plenty of seating. They accommodated a baby and we saw a couple of other families present. I had always heard the Toasted Coconut was vegetarian friendly but there wasn't that many vegetarian options on the menu. The menu in the past had a vegetarian sandwich, but it looks like this has since been removed. I got the onion hash which was a large egg dish with black beans and potatoes. It was good and I had enough leftover to take home for another meal. I also tried the cauliflower wings. The overall vibe is casual and welcoming, making it a great place to grab a few drinks with friends or coworkers. The indoor and outdoor seating options are nice when Houston isn't blistering hot. Parking can be tough, though, since the lot is shared with a couple of other restaurants. That said, this recent visit was overshadowed by what was easily the most awkward and least customer-focused service experience I've had here. I was dining with a group of friends, and one friend ordered a meal to eat there along with another item to go. There was a little confusion when the order was placed, but we thought everything had been clarified. When the food arrived, both items were served on plates for the table. We politely explained that one of them was supposed to be a to-go order. It turned out the server had entered an additional order and believed we wanted both items for the table. What bothered me wasn't the mistake itself--those happen. It was the response. There was no apology, and instead we were told the misunderstanding was due to how we had communicated the order. We decided to keep all the food and move on, but the interaction felt unnecessarily defensive. I came a little late and was looking at the menu and asked whether they still had the fried eggplant dish that had been on the menu before. The response was simply, "No." No explanation, no follow-up, just an awkward silence. It set the tone for the rest of the interaction. So I decided to let her know I'll continue to look. This response was so uncomfortable that I later decided not to order anything at all. At one point, the server mentioned she had overheard us talking about having a "crazy weekend" and seemed to use that as an explanation for the earlier confusion. Whether there was miscommunication on both sides or not, the overall experience felt unnecessarily tense. I've typically had wonderful experiences here, which is why this visit stood out so much. The food, drinks, and atmosphere are still reasons I'd come back, but please avoid assigning Naya to customers if she's not willing to be a bit more cordial.

I ordered the Chicken Tenders which came with Fries and Honey Slaw. I also ordered a side of Broccoli. The Fries and Broccoli were cold while the Cole Slaw was too salty for my taste preference. The Chicken Tenders and dipping sauces (Cayenne Ranch and Honey Mustard) were tasty. One of my dining companions sent some of her food back because it was also served cold. One of the employees was going to reheat her food, and she had to ask for a new order to be brought out (which they reluctantly did). For my beverage I had the Blueberry Spritz which is a mocktail. It was very good and refreshing, but took quite a while to be brought to the table. The staff was nice enough to grab extra napkins and utensils for us when we asked which was very nice of them to do. Maybe it was just an off day for the staff and hopefully they have fixed the issue with serving cold food that is meant to be served hot. I'll wait a little while longer before returning.
