Whenever a road trip puts us anywhere near Susanville, breakfast here is usually a must, but this time we stopped in for lunch and I found a new favorite: the green enchiladas. I added chicken and, oh man, it took real self-control not to clean the plate. That green chile sauce is absolutely sippable (no shame). The staff is always friendly, the place is consistently clean, and the food feels like it's made with care. We stopped by Courthouse Cafe during our road trip and had mixed feelings. I ordered the carne asada fries with added beans. The flavor was actually really good--fresh veggies, great seasoning, and the beans were a nice touch. But the carne asada was extremely chewy and way too salty, which made me feel nauseous afterward. My sister got a healthy bowl with rice, chicken, and black beans--some of her chicken was chewy too. My mom didn't order anything. She appreciated that they don't cook with lard, but didn't find anything she liked on the menu. We also got a plain unseasoned dog patty for $9, which honestly felt excessive for what it was. It didn't include anything extra and cost about as much as a full pound of fresh ground beef. The staff were really kind, and that made the experience better, but overall it felt overpriced for the quality. Between the tough meat, saltiness, and high add-on costs, we wouldn't go out of our way to return. read more

This building was maybe an A&W in a previous life? Either that or a Pizza Hut, but them there's the drive in architecture still in place. Our Yelp research driving up from Genoa was sparse, and the Courthouse seemed to be better than most in Susanville. The only "negative" was that Gayle's salad should have had the dressing on the side, and they poured a lot of that into their version. On the other hand, my tuna melt and fries were excellent and better than most that I've ordered over the years. The interior was casual, service was prompt and friendly, and the significantly Mexican menu had a lot to offer. We've tried several places in Susanville and this is one of the few good dining options, especially for those who are health conscious. Ambiance: Standard diner vibe. Not amazing but not terrible. Food: there's a combination of typical diner fare and Mexican options. We had the following: Veggie wrap - honestly not a fan. It's a variety of unseasoned raw vegetables inside a tortilla with a side dressing. Healthy Bowl - surprisingly good. The lime rice makes Chipotle's rice look like a joke. We were surprised to find something this healthy and delicious on the menu. Cobb salad - strange combination of ingredients. There were mushrooms but no corn. Not bad - just unexpected. Stopped in here after dropping off our granddaughter since we were late eating lunch. It's just a small-town diner but with friendly servers. I've heard it can be busy, but we got served on a Sunday around 1:00 without any wait. The food was good and served hot within the expected time. They have a big variety on their menu. read more

Nothing special, I don't recommend. You're not missing out on anything by skipping this place. Friendly people, but food is bland and made with cheap ingredients. Greeting when we walked in was friendly and they quickly found some seats for us. Took our orders and we had to wait a long time for the food to come out. Some people that ordered after us got their food before us. Probably depends on what's ordered, but still upsetting to see when we had to wait so long. Oatmeal was dry and they were out of the nuts that comes with it. I was not warned of this when I ordered. Beef and Vegetable Soup was basic, made with carrots that come preshredded in the bag and gristly beef pieces. Jalapeño Bacon Benedict was served on cold biscuits instead of english muffins! That combination just didn't taste right. Restrooms were out of order, both men's and women's. Otherwise place seemed clean and orderly. To finish off the mediocre meal, we were presented with a miscalculated check! Take a close look at your bill if you decide to go against my advice and try to eat here. We don't get to Susanville very often but we enjoy coming to the Courthouse Cafe for breakfast when we have high school baseball games in town. The service is warm and welcoming. The women servers make you feel like family. Our breakfast is always tasty, coffee strong, and well priced. It's small and reminds me of an older Jack in the box location. Good local fun. We always have fun and look forward to returning. It's become our tradition. read more

The burgers we had were good and food came fast, but overall the place was grimy. Every surface was sticky, all the condiments on our table were gross-obviously had not been cleaned in a while. The server handed us a bottle of mustard we chased them for that was so caked with dried ick we didn't use it. Sadly, this place has gone downhill since I posted two years ago. I went to lunch with a friend. I asked for water and asked for hot tea. When my friend arrived, she asked for hot tea as well. I got the water not too long after I asked for it and it was a nice big glass of water which I really enjoyed. However, I had to ask twice for my tea. My friend had to ask at least two times where her tea was. I ordered the chicken fajita omelette that came with country fries and rye toast. My friend ordered the fish and chips. She got her food probably at least five maybe close to 10 minutes before I got my food. we also had to ask for cutlery and napkins. When the omelette came, there was no sour cream or salsa as had been mentioned on the menu. I asked the lady that brought it to me, I believe she was the owner, if it came with salsa and sour cream. She snippily said to me that she was going to get it. She also brought the toast out a bit later. It was one piece of toast, cut in half, not the usual two pieces. There was no jelly on the table. I waited and waited and waited for someone to come and ask us if everything was all right. My omelette was tasteless. Even with salsa and salt and pepper, there was no flavor at all. The menu said three egg omelette, but it didn't seem like there were three eggs in the omelette. The potatoes were OK, though they did need salt and pepper. finally, the lady that had brought my food came over and just asked if we needed to go boxes. I said I needed one, but I also wanted some jelly. She asked me what flavor and I told her blackberry. She brought me blackberry jelly. By then my toast was cold and limp. I brought my half of the omelette that I couldn't stomach home and gave it to my dogs. The young girl that took our order and brought us our checks was a sweetheart. Fortunately, my friend and I had a great conversation. Oh by the way, she ordered fish and chips and it didn't look too bad and she didn't say anything about it. My husband and I love Courthouse Cafe. The food is consistently good. I've never had anything I didn't enjoy here. It's a nice combination on American and Mexican. We consider this our favorite restaurant in Susanville! We have a couple favorite servers who are always friendly and provide great service. They are open for breakfast and lunch only. Stopped in on our way to Reno. We were greeted by friendly staff. Our waitress (I think was the owner) was full of energy and suggested we try her Mexican food dishes. The place was full when we arrived so we had to wait, but that's understandable on a weekend in a small city with little more than a handful of sit down restaurants. The service was good, but the place is generally grubby looking. You know what I mean, could be spotlessly clean but everything is so rundown and old it will never look clean again. And it didn't help that it once the A&W drive in where I earned my first real paycheck 50 years ago. The food? Maybe my dining partners knew what to order since they have eaten there before, but my quesabirria tacos were almost flavorless. The beef filling tasted like under seasoned pot roast, and the broth tasted like beef broth from a carton with added grease. No spicy goodness. The refried beens tasted peculiar -- not like refried beans -- and the rice may as well have been paper pulp. Every time I think too hard about the dish I feel a bit queasy. read more

The restaurant is very casual, staff is nice but the service VERY slow and the food was NOT that great! I ordered the birria tacos combo that came with a side of rice and refried beans....Looks can be deceiving (see my photo). Let's just say everything was nasty! The rice was sooooo mushy that it was literally those $2 microwave bags of rice! How did I know it was microwave, well I had just bought same kind from the grocery store and it tasted exactly the same! Now the beans.....those too were not fresh as they were also from a can! I can tell the difference from homemade vs store bought! Finally the birria tacos....i had high hopes for these too but they were not good. The meat also tasted like the pre-packaged meat you can buy at any store! Total let down. Not sure if the business is trying to cut corners but the food quality is terrible. Other yelpers that said their food tasted like canned / packaged food were right! Should have known better than to order Mexican food from a cafe.... Came here with 4 of my buddies and we were hungry because this morning all I had to eat was a few slices of ham and half a slice of Hawaiian pizza and although I have always wanted to go to Hawaii I don't think that is the right type of pizza for the morning. They sat us right away which was awesome because two of my buddies are German and you don't want to make them wait. My buddy got the chicken fried steak special with over easy eggs and country style potatoes and English muffin and I got the exact same thing as him. He is so cool! Our waitress was Kim, and she is the best waitress we have had in a long time. I told her this when we were leaving, but it's not because I was flirting with her. One of my buddies was kind of flirting with her and I didn't get in the way of what they had. They had something special. Which I love I ordered a breakfast Burrito. It had hash Browns, Ortega chili Scramble eggs Season just right. They served it with 2 sides of salsa. Red and green. It was a delicious burrito. While we haven't eaten at the restaurant we've had their street tacos as take out multiple times and always been impressed. My parents;however, have eaten here several times and always seem pleased. My sister and I have a gluten allergy so ordering for us always takes some checking into. My mom was super nervous and called and spoke to the owner about the tacos and sides and she was great at reviewing all the ingredients and being sure they were prepped in an allergen friendly manner.
