I'm new to the area and that means I get to walk to the square and experience all that's here. That meant the day after Thanksgiving we went on adventure. By our luck the Courthouse Exchange was open. In our party of three one got the soup and salad bar, the soup was good according to her, but just a lot of celery. My other friend got the BLT, he said it was great! Myself, I got the messy fries in an entree portion. All were good and we all raved about how good the bacon was. We all had a round of beer and that was fresh and delicious. I definitely plan to get back and try more of the menu. Oh did I mention our server was delightful and attentive.

At bottom right chicken fried chicken. Fish (cod) n' chips. Baked potato. Bailiff's fried chicken. Turkey bacon avocado sandwich. Center is fried pickles and onion strings. The food was excellent. Lindsey was our server. She provided great service. She was very politely attentive. Ambiance was inviting. It had that old history feel. The mural painting on the walls and pictures they displayed the history of Independence. My family and I will definitely return and the rest of the menu.

This place is located in downtown Independence directly across from the Truman Courthouse. When you enter, you walk down some stairs to the restaurant located below street level. It has a very casual atmosphere, and a home style menu with the usual American cuisine. The open faced hot roast beef sandwich was excellent. Even better, the chocolate cake was amazing. Service was outstanding! Very attentive. Highly recommended if you are in the area.

This review is for the experience my brother and I had on Wednesday, December 13th. My brother and I got together that day at Game Café for a couple hours and decided to get something to eat at the neighboring restaurant before visiting some more family. ^__^ We were both relieved for how slow it was there that day! Only a couple other booths were being used during our lunch, so getting settled came naturally, along with our interaction with our waitress. She was very kind and welcoming, which made things even more comfortable. My brother ordered a specialty buffalo chicken mac'n cheese bowl of some sort and I chose to get 2 sides to enjoy as a meal. BOTH SIDES WERE EACH A MEAL !! lol.. Huge sides they were! You could easily fill up on one side order of them sweet potato fries Or deep-fried mushrooms. Both of which are safe go-to's for me if I see them on any menu.. I do enjoy my deep-fried mushies. ^_^ Because it was so slow that afternoon, it was easy to capture decent snapshots of their business. It's a little too dark for my personal liking, but it was alright. Well kept and neat it was. I didn't love their fried mushies, but I still enjoyed them, and had plenty to take home with me after our time there lol. I might return to try something else on their menu. Perhaps after another Game Café visit.

As luck would have it, I had to run an errand near the area and my decision was made. First off, the entrance isn't where you'd think it would be. The order window was closed and I noticed people going up to the deck to get in, so up I headed. The place was actually spacious and comfortable, it has a Caribbean vibe to it. After much consternation, I figured I'd make it tough on them and opted for the Reuben. As some somebody who has had many Reubens at the place where they were invented, Omaha's Blackstone Hotel, I can be a tough judge. This is definitely the best place to get one in KC, so I know that I'll be back for more. I even liked the bread that they used, it set it apart from other sammiches. And the service was great, so I'll be back.

Entering the space on weekday is preferable for those who do not want to have a lot of noise when eating dinner. On saturday during peak lunch the spot can get pretty busy but somehow never packed. They even have a fun merch corner if you fee like reppin som delicious dough. Will return soon if not atleast a couple times before the end of the summer.

Everyone was friendly, welcoming, and our food came out quickly. I ordered a turkey club while my dad got one as well, and unfortunately we both had the same issue. The turkey was on the dry side, and it was sliced much thicker than I personally prefer. I tend to like a thinner deli-style sliced turkey, so it just wasn't my favorite sandwich. My mom ordered one of the salads though, and honestly it looked better than my sandwich. It was loaded with fresh toppings, and she said the ranch was excellent. If I come back, I'd probably skip the sandwich altogether and give one of the salads a try. Overall, I can definitely appreciate what they're going for. The prices are fantastic, honestly unheard of in present day, and that's the main reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 3. It's a true local spot, and I wouldn't mind giving it another chance to try something different from the menu.

It did NOT disappoint. They have a variety of breads, protein choices and accruements to embellish their sandwiches. SUPER tasty and GREAT plating makes their food mighty tempting. Vance, the young man who took our orders, was knowledgeable about selections and patient with we "newbies". The layout appears to be a "fast food joint". Nothing could be further from the truth. Genuine silverware with REAL "LIVE" PLATES, ROOMY, comfortable booths or table and chairs makes for a relaxing environment. Allowing for lingering and conversation with good friends. Again there is little personality to most locations these days yet the functionality and the ability to clean quickly is at a premium. But, there is little about the restaurant that is comfortable or memorable. So this gets the standard 3 stars. The Staff - I had the good fortune to interact with several of the staff members this time. And ALL of them were extremely nice, kind, and friendly. They went out of their way to check on me several times and remind me that I could get a refill on my drink. They gall at the checkout even offered to bring me the desert that I had on rewards that was set to expire soon. Some of the best Customer Service I have seen in a while. - 5 stars. The Food - Well this is the number one reason to swing in. They have a number of great creations and options to pick more than one. They do let you customize a sandwich should you want. I think this is as good as it gets (unless you head to a "real" deli where YOU decide what is on the sandwich. This visit I had the Pick 2 (which is common) where I had a fantastic Club sandwich and a Chef salad. Pretty healthy over all. (I used extra dressing and ate brookie bites so scratch the healthiness). 4 stars Overall - This was a fantastic visit to an old favorite. The food could have just a little more wow... and by now you all know how I feel about the clean/institutional look and feel of eateries. A perfect lunch space. I'll be back often as they are good, healthyish, and close.

It's a Dutch crunch so it has a nice crunchy texture on top but the bread itself has a nice chew and holds up to whatever toppings you like. I personally favor the Crown Town club. It's a classic club sandwich-turkey, ham, bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion, and a chipotle mayo. I like to also add smoked Gouda because cheese improves everything imho. They also offer vegetarian options, hot sandwiches, chips, and cookies. I've honestly loved everything I've eaten from them over the years so you really can't go wrong. My review is, for me, the burger, its not that good, its just not for me. My expectation was, they had the "IT FACTOR" for the burgers. Something you would have expected from the day, 60/70 years ago. The old larger bun, not biscuit size, grilled burger meat, mine seemed losely patted and steamed and more than pickle, onion and mustard. Maybe thats just the way its always been and others love it. The carhops came right up to our window to take our order and were incredibly friendly and welcoming. The menu is surprisingly large for such a small place. We ordered the Wiz Burger, chicken nuggets, tots, onion rings, fries, and Brown Cow root beer floats. Prices were very reasonable, which was a nice bonus. One thing I really loved was the option to order their homemade root beer in an ice-cold glass mug (which you return when you're done). It definitely adds to the nostalgic experience. Our favorite items were the crispy tater tots, the chicken nuggets (which were more like mini chicken strips), and the root beer floats. The Wiz Burger was definitely unique, but it wasn't a crowd-pleaser in our car. It's made with loose meat mixed with onions, pickles, and cheese, which may appeal to some but wasn't our favorite. I'd definitely go back to try the chicken sandwich, pork tenderloin, or spicy buffalo dog. The food itself might be closer to 3 stars, but the unique throwback nostalgia of the carhop era bumps the overall experience into 4-star territory. It's a must-try-at-least-once kind of place.
