While rolling around San Juan Island for my daughter's bday we came across Cousin Vinnie's NY Pizza Cafe on Yelp. What really drew my attention was some of the piss poor reviews from some fake Yelpstars...you know the ones folks; those fake folks that got three total reviews all one star. I thought it was comical about how scared and bent customers were regarding Vinnie's attitude. Honestly, if you can't hack a strong attitude maybe you should just stay inside and be scared! More great pizza for the rest of us. Cousin Vinnie's is not a hole in the wall pizzeria it's a walk up to a door you can't enter and order directly with Vinnie working in the kitchen! Bad A**! We ordered up one large thin crust with olives, mushrooms, pepperoni, and sausage. One personal size all meat pizza and cannolis. Vinnie told me to come back in about 35-40 minutes. He's a one man show people. Rolled back to the front of the pizzeria and Vinnie was showing off other pies he created for orders infront of us. Once ours was done he freshly filled the cannolis and showed off our pizzas. Wow not only did they look great they tasted great. Loved the flavor of the crust and ingredients! 5 stars Vinnie! I was having trouble finding a place to eat, since I am vegetarian. My husband was grabbing a sandwich and I look and saw Cousin Vinnie's NY Pizza Cafe. I was so happy! I was debating between cheese pizza or just noodles with marinara sauce. I stood at the window and reviewed the menu and didn't see noodles with marinara, so when the gentleman came over, I asked "do you have noodles and marinara sauce?" He was like "oh yeah, pasta with marinara? It's there on the menu." I looked and didn't see it and he said "well it's on there somewhere" and I was just excited to get some pasta with marinara so said "okay, pasta with marinara" he asked me if it was for a kid, which I told him it was for me. I paid and he said it would be 20 minutes or so. I hung out and came back after 25 minutes, it took a few minutes but he brought it to the window and had me look at it, there were meatballs in it. I immediately said, "oh no i don't eat meat, those are meatballs?" He immediately said "I pointed it out on the menu?!" and I repeated that I do not eat meat and wanted just noodles with marinara sauce. He then told me he only put them on there because the other lady who ordered had them, so he threw them on mine too... which was frustrating. He then said he will just Take them off. I felt bad because he cooked everything from scratch and wasnt busy so I didn't want to tell him that I wasn't going to eat it, even after the meatballs were removed. I was so bummed as the noodles and sauce did look great and I know I should have just asked for it To be made again. it was $25 or so. I felt he could have been a little more approachable and didn't immediately try to put the blame on me. food did look good. read more

Food is fantastic. As a parm fanatic I find Washington to be a barren dessert lacking in options. The few options available I hold onto like a moth to a flame regardless of quality. I'm happy to report, Vinnie's is a true hidden gem tucked away in the back corner of the town of Friday harbor. The bread, clearly chosen with care provides a crunch not found this side of the Mississippi. You can feel the care that goes into every sandwich. If you treat Vinnie and Vinnie's with the patience and respect it deserves, you will be rewarded. I missed my ferry home by a few minutes and was excited because I knew I could swing back by Vinnie's. This place truly rocks. 10/10 favorite restaurant in WA. read more

A true hidden gem! This little hole in the wall spot is as authentic as it gets, very New York, which is rare to find outside of NYC, maybe New Jersey or Philly. The owner is a man of few words, but very kind, and he is the real deal, exactly like the Italian Americans I grew up around in New York. The food is outstanding, made to order, and truly authentic. We had a real Philly steak and cheese, the first one I have had in years, and genuine New York style pizza that transported me back home. I am very picky with Italian food and pizza after living in NYC for many years, and this place passes the test with flying colors. As a bonus, they even serve real Italian ice. While exploring San Juan's food scene, we came across Vinnie's. It's hidden down a short food hall. We were unsure if it was open at first as the entrance is blocked by a table. We asked if it was open as there was a man (Vinny) and a women eating lunch at a table inside the shop. Vinny exclaimed that of course it was open- as if this was obvious. Vinny was a very loud spoken Italian man. He fits the name of the shop. We ordered a single slice of pepperoni pizza and two sodas ($15), and sat at the only customer table outside the shop door. The pizza was average. Soda was great. As we ate, Vinny asked us if the pizza had flavor and checked on us often. I feel bad for Vinny, It was obvious he cares about his business, but doesn't understand good business etiquette. read more

The bar for me is so high to write a negative review of a restaurant. I know how hard it is in this business. So this is perhaps the only one I've written and may ever write again. I had to throw away this pizza today. So sad. We got charged $13.00 for two slices (with cash discount) which looked like they were days old and even smelled bad. Visually they looked like two pieces of soggy cardboard. The price is more expensive than the best "by the slice" pizza in Seattle and it was the worst pizza I've ever attempted to eat. Look, if you want a great gluten free personal pizza this joint is for you. If you want a good regular crust pizza...go elsewhere. The gluten free pizzas we had were loaded with toppings, well cooked, and very tasty. The regular pepperonis ordered was the exact opposite...but still edible for sure. If you have pre-conceived notions about a margherita pizza being made with fresh basil, etc., you need to know that you won't get that here. Honestly, when I first opened the box, I was wondering what I got. This place uses spinach in place of basil and lots of dried herbs and fresh tomatoes. It's NOT your standard Margherita by any stretch, but it's AMAZING! I LOVED IT. The crust is the best I've had in Washington. The sauce, the cheese - it was all great. I even called my man Vinnie back to let him know, since I felt like we got off on the wrong foot. If you come here with an open mind and let Vinnie unleash his creative pizza artistry on you, you will 100% love what he makes for you. I looked up online last minute pizza places and Cousin Vinnie's was the only one that picked up. The pizza was very thick with toppings and was good, we ate it. Over the phone the owner said how good the garlic bread sticks were and was very emphatic about them when I arrived, they were okay. It cost a lot for the pizza $50 for a large and breadsticks. It was cash only, so lucky I had the cash. Most people don't have cash now. If I was close to the pizza place I would order from there again, but everything costs a lot now. read more

Visited this place during our trip to San Juan looking for a couple of slices of cheese pizza for the kids. After paying $4 for each slice the guys brings out these tiny slivers of pizza from like 2 days ago. They are dry as hell and he tried heating them a bit on his oven to give a false feeling of freshness which only made it harder and chewy. If you don't have it say no and we could look elsewhere. Just robbing visitors leaves a bad feeling for the place as a whole! Definitely avoid or at least pay after you see what will likely be served so you have the chance to at least deny. This place was so strange. The sign said open but there was a table blocking the door. When the guy came to it he just stood there looking at me. I asked if he was still open and he said "Am I open?" Listen, I get it. I've lived in tourist towns and worked in the service industry. You get a lot of dumb questions. The sign was on yes, but nothing about the place was welcoming and I didn't understand the table blocking off the dining room. I asked for a menu and he rolled his eyes and asked if we wanted slices of whole pizza. The sign out front said pasta, sandwich's, dessert, etc so I was hoping for something other than pizza but apparently it's just pizza. He was so rude I wanted to leave but my kids decided they wanted pizza. There was no where to sit so we took it to go. It was not great pizza. When I paid before seeing the absolute crap pizza the tip options started at 25%. Would not recommend. This is a take-out only authentic NY style pizzeria. The one-man operation hails from Coney Island, accent, attitude, delicious pizza and all. Tips: 1. Sicilian is a large square pizza. Neapolitan is medium. Personal is the size of a paper plate. You'll confuse things if you ask about size. 2. Pizza takes about 30min to make. Chill out. 3. Enjoy -- this kind of pizza is very hard to find in the Pacific Northwest. And there aren't a whole lot of pizza options on the island. It's special. read more

PLEASE READ THE WHOLE THING: I have never written a yelp review before, but I am compelled to share my experience. Wednesday June 24th, 2020: I called Cousin Vinnys and was greeted with a coarse Italian voice that was quick to the point and had no room for chit-chat. I had faith that this was going to be an authentic Italian pizza experience. BOY WAS I WRONG. From the second I opened the heavy cardboard box, dripping with oil - I was queasy. The crust tasted like a day old saltine cracker, the dough was like two flour tortillas microwaved together, the pepperoni was chewy like a car tire, the cheese was moist with grease...Oh the grease...the entire pizza soaked. It leaked through the box before we even opened it. Each slice was like a trough carrying mystery oil that we could later feel coming through our pores. We wanted this pizza to be good. We were rooting for it. The short spoken, thick Italian accent over the phone, the blank pizza box, the Italian family photos inside the restaurant - I even thought for a second that we found a secret gem - maybe this is the best pizza on the west coast. I really don't know how this place has more than two stars. I live on the island. There's nobody ever in this restaurant. Because it's awful and it will give you food poisoning most likely. It's really hard to screw up Pizza but this guy found a way to do it. Ingredients are rotten cheese is green and usually has a bit of mold in it. Most people on the island believe the business is just a front. And this man is most likely in the witness protection program. You might notice that anytime you come in and try to order something he gets upset. Because he doesn't need your business he doesn't want to work the whole restaurant it's just a front.
