I am in Denton visiting my daughter and I had an accident and wanted to pick up lunch before going to thenER. This was my first visit. Very pleasant staff. Great eye contact with the man that took my order and warm smile. He knew the menu and was able to answer questions. When I changed my mind, it was no problem. I ordered take out: BBQ chicken sandwich with twice baked potato. Excellent sandwich with appropriate amount of sauce, chicken and pickles. Bun was fresh and whole wheat I believe. The twice baked potato was awesome! At first I thought it was a scoop of rice but it was a potato with all the baked potato fixins and formed in a scoop. Delicious and unique. They served everything nicely to go and nothing leaked or got messed up. When I got to my destination and opened it up they had included a beautiful blackened while jalapeño. Loved it!! They were very busy and yet they were able to move very fast and I waited a very minimal amount of time. I would love to go back and will if I run into one of these places again. read more

Cowboy Chicken is really good, I almost always get the dark meat lunch. The chicken is fall off the bone and really flavorful. The enchiladas are not as good as other people make them out to be, the sauce is too spicy. The twice baked potatoes are definitely the best side on the menu. It's not cheap but if you are looking for the best chicken in Denton Cowboy Chicken is the place for you. read more

My boyfriend & I visited this place last week and we weren't exactly sure what to expect. I ordered the half chicken (white) with twice baked potatoes and fried okra. I loved the okra but the twice baked potatoes are pretty disgusting. The chicken is great but as I tried my boyfriends sides he got with his meal I was still not impressed. The biscuits are pretty gross also. The chicken was delicious ... absolutely great but that's the only thing that was good. For the price I don't think it's worth it but I encourage you to try it out for yourself & see. read more

Great spot for lunch! I snagged the leg and thigh with 2 sides for $6.99. For sides they suggested the okra and the creamed spinach and the spinach was so great it took me back to grandma's house There was a serious line for lunch today and the staff was very welcoming and took the time to give suggestions when I was stumped on my side choices. We've been here twice now, once for dinner during the week and once on a Sunday for lunch. The first time both my husband and I got chicken meals. I got the quarter meal and my husband got the half chicken meal. I also got macaroni & cheese and either corn or green beans as sides for my meals. Our food was very good! You can see the chickens slowly cooking on their rotisseries, and the smell is so nice. The second time I got their enchiladas, a side salad, and their ranchero beans. All were very, very good. The enchiladas were freshly made using their rotisserie chicken and topped with a green sauce. The beans were delicious, and the salad was fully loaded. The only thing I would change would be to ask for less sauce on the enchiladas, as it got kind of rich for me as I ate. Still very good though. The first time we were there there were a good number of people dining in. The Sunday visit was packed. Both times several people came in to take food to-go. This would definitely be a good full meal to pick up and take home. The employees that we encountered both times were very friendly and helpful. Not a fan. The others I ate with said their sides and chicken were good. I wasn't overly hungry, so I got the chicken sandwich with 1 side. Big mistake. If the owners read this review, quit cutting the small sandwich in half. It doesn't make it look bigger, just lets the toppings fall out. As far as flavor, there wasn't any. Wait, I take it back....the red onion was fresh and full of flavor. The sandwich overall was dry and dull. You can tell the owners don't care about this location. Silverware was still dirty/greasy, tables weren't cleaned quick enough and just an overall sloppy atmosphere. Not a fan, and I won't be going to this or any other locations. Amazing woodfired chicken better than I could possibly make it at home and I know how to make good chicken. The grilled green beans were insane. The baked mac & cheese was ridiculous. This story is a little old but... About two years ago I had the chicken taco and when I was eating it I bit down on something hard. It was a chicken bone! So I took it out and continued eating. Then I almost choked on a second bone! So I called them and picked up another chicken taco for free. Then I got home, took a couple of other bites, then I straight up bit down on another bone. Went here with a significant other. We both decided to get a 1/4 chicken plate that came with two sides.. For a price of 6.99 a piece it sounded like a great deal. Unfortunately, that money could have been spent at a crappy fast food restaurant and I probably would have enjoyed that more. Upon receiving our food it looked delicious, but when we actually bit into it. The food was cold and bland and tasted like you were eating a foam toy of chicken instead of an actual wood fired chicken. We also decided to share tortilla soup at first it was fine a few bites here and there were tasty, but once you got past the top layer of soup, it also became bland and boring. The sides were cold and the corn tasted like it was from a can and had been sitting in a vat of it's own juices much like the $1 buffet places. The Mac and Cheese was gritty and rubbery it tasted like bits of tire with cheese goop. All in all it was a bad experience and I wouldn't return, I wish I could give it less stars but hey at least the sweet tea and fried okra was okay. read more

Came across Cowboy Chicken by chance while driving thru Denton. The twice baked potatoes were good. I also ordered a side of fried okra which was hot and crispy but the okra itself seemed under done. It was a bit tough and chewy. I ordered the grilled chicken platter and the chicken itself was just okay. It was lukewarm at best and pretty dry So overall while the service was good and friendly the food was just average. I wouldn't go out of my way to come back read more

I visited this store last night and they were fairly busy, well organized and very clean. My wife had a grilled chicken salad and I had a half chicken. my wife salad was great, but we realized afterwards that they specialize in rotisserie chicken, not grilled chicken. My half chicken was way off the charts, buttery corn, fried okra and a roll. Then to finish off, we had a complimentary blackberry cobbler with ice cream that the manager brought to us after he visited our table and chatted a bit about the restaurant's culture and history. We mentioned that we should have ordered the southwest salad instead, he offered to get us one, but my wife was already full. I give the store a 100 on customer service and food quality. Their fried chicken is ok, but their chicken enchiladas destroyed the stomachs of myself and a few coworkers, be wary.

For me, it's probably more like a 2.5. We had high hopes after looking over the menu, but the taste and quality fell way short of what we expected. I tried the chicken enchiladas because a Yelp reviewer said they would make me wanna slap my momma, but really, they just made me wanna slap that Yelp reviewer. My husband got the cowboy taco. Both dishes were kind of TexMex hybrids and they really didn't hit the mark on the Tex side or the Mex side. Both entrees were delivered luke warm. The chicken itself was well seasoned and moist, but all of the ancillary (beans/rice) items brought the chicken experience way down. As first timers, we probably should have stuck with straight up chicken, but we didn't and because of that may never go back. read more

I love their enchiladas. All white meat chicken, light on cheese, with a delicious tomatillo/avocado/cilantro sauce. Soooo good. The corn nuggets are also awesome. The rest of the menu is good, too, but not all that special. Sometimes the chicken seems a little dry/over cooked, but it's very well seasoned. We fed 2 adults and 5 kids between the ages of 8-12 for $40 (we got waters) and took a whole chicken, salad and small sides home for another meal!! I didn't spent that much at Taco Bell and DQ with no left overs and no nutritional value. Food was great! Ranch tasted homemade. I was very please with this family style restaurant. Service was fast without the "fried". The pulled chicken sandwich looked really good (we got 2 rotisserie), messy I'm sure. Get sauce on the side. Fries were good too if you like them salty. Sweet potato was moist and one order of salad could have fed 4! Rolls were great and Mac n cheese was good too. Grateful for some home cooking during a mostly fast food week. read more

When they first opened, service was good and food was excellent. The last several times I have eaten here, the food has had serious issues. Food served cold. Fries soaked in oil. The manager on a recent visit tried to fix things and provided a free entree, but I'll be moving cowboy chicken further down the eat list for the area. It's unfortunate. read more

Too little food for the price, literally. And we are not folks who need to belly up to a buffet when we go out to eat or need a platter in front of us, but this was ridiculous for the price. Also, I brought my 2 year old in and needed a high chair and every single one of them has a busted buckle for the seat belt. Let me take you through my experience at cowboy chicken... A friend and I are from out of town and decided to try this place for lunch. For the gluten intolerant people this is not a good place. They do not have a gluten free menu as advertised. They offer you an allergen list and serve the platter with a large roll in the middle of the plate which is not shown in the menu. Once we ordered My friend and I had to chose between dirty tables or a table with a dirty bus rag. We ordered the grilled chicken platter. Both of our chicken breasts were luke warm and dry and appeared to be microwaved. I also ordered sweet corn and sweet potatoes. The sweet potato was marvelous, but the sweet corn tasted like butter and was sitting in a bowl of water. I took two bites and left it alone. Needless to say I am still hungry and will not be back. read more

Disgusting:( Had lunch here today and my entire meal was inedible. I ordered the 1/4 chicken white, green beans and spanish rice. The chicken was the saltiest thing I've ever tasted. The green beans had a rubber taste and texture, so I assume they were frozen, then microwaved. The "spanish" rice was from a box and had a strong unnatural chicken flavor. I've never eaten somewhere that I had to throw away my entire meal, but I did that today. read more

Expensive for fast food - not helped by the fact that they automatically sold the largest drink on the menu without asking. I ordered three piece dark with black eyed peas and fries. The food is awesome. The chicken is growth hormone free (I asked the manager about them) which is why it's not huge like the grocery chickens, and they use hickory wood to slow roast it. The sides are really good too. read more

Third time here and time to review. I really enjoy the menu items. I normally get the Cowpoke with some BBQ sauce. Brought my husband tonight and he got the BBQ chicken legs, twice baked potatoes, and Mac n cheese. I would definitely recommend the potatoes! I would have given a higher rating if the food was warmer. Maybe it was the time of night that it wasn't hot. My roasted veggies were very hot, but chewy. I would like to see some deep cleaning, some stuff on the walls needs wiped off. To end on a good note, the blackberry and peach cobbler was good! Overall, we will keep coming. read more

We drive by this place on a regular basis so I looked it up online and it sounded wonderful. Unfortunately it was a disappointment. The world famous chicken enchiladas are nothing more than chicken wrapped in a tortilla with a tangy sauce which I think is tomatillo. There was no onion, cheese or anything else in them. They were okay but nothing I will go back for. My husband ordered the rotisserie chicken and the outside seasoning was good but the chicken was dry. I couldn't even eat my sides, maybe I just ordered the wrong thing. Our curiosity is satisfied and there's nothing that will make me want to go back. Not impressed and overly salted. Ordered 1/4 white chicken platter with an extra side of black beans. The chicken skin was extremely salty, and as a result(?), the chicken meat tasted bland without much flavor. The black beans were good, but were heavily salted. Overall, I thought the food was overpriced, especially for an individual side. This was my 2nd visit (i.e. 2nd chance), as my first visit had the same experience. After both visits, it felt like my lips were drying out as a result of all the salt. Cowboy Chicken will be off my list of local eats. read more
