I heard this place was featured in Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, and the photos on Yelp looks great, so I decided to check it out. Cute spot that appears to be in downtown Forth Worth for a while. There's plenty of seating and this place almost reminds me of an antique shop. People like to come here for lunch. The servers are really friendly and personable. Menus are conveniently at the table long with a big bottle of hot sauce. I decided to get a plate of 2 piece dark meat with a side of mac and cheese and seasoned fries. The chicken was very crispy, and I thought it could use a little bit more flavor. Also, it seemed like the chicken was overcooked. It must be because I was in for lunch early - opening at 11 AM - but still ... I ordered 2 piece dark (leg and thigh) and the dish as it came with cole slaw and baked beans. When my meal arrived I almost sent it back because the chicken was on the verge of black. But I thought, okay at least it will be crispy, and it was. But the Pieces were so overcooked that the chicken meat was dry and chewy. There's that. Then the beans. One vinegary bite and I knew that side was not for me. The Cole slaw was great! One of the employees, wearing gloves, rubbed his nose multiple times--then continued handling food without changing gloves. I voiced my concern to another staff member, who did go speak to him. But instead of taking accountability, the employee walked by the food prep area and slapped his dirty gloves down on the counter where food was being sent out. It was careless and unhygienic, and it took away any appetite I had. As for the food: Fries: Plain, underseasoned, and forgettable. Honestly, I could've made better fries at home with a frozen bag and an air fryer. 1 out of 5. Mac & Cheese: It tasted like a mix of Kraft and homemade, but with almost no seasoning outside of what looked like paprika on top. Just bland. 2 out of 5. Chicken: The seasoning was completely off incredibly salty to the point where it was hard to eat. Not sure if it was a one-off issue, but it didn't leave a good impression. 2 out of 5. Between the lack of basic hygiene and the underwhelming food, I left disappointed and unlikely to return. Prices were reasonable and the lunch special pricing was a pleasant surprise since I originally was only going to get the 2-pc plate originally. We will go to Babe's very soon (Review coming) but on this occasion Gus's got the nod and let me tell y'all, I was very happy with that decision. Gus's is a cool little spot on Magnolia and we were able to sit immediately even on a busy Saturday night, we both ordered the 3 piece dark plate, I substituted the beans and slaw for mac & cheese and potato salad. The chicken is soooo good! It's got a nice hint of spicy on the dark golden batter which I love and a really nice crunch to it as well also a big plus for me, it was very juicy and you can tell they keep up on their fryers and oil as the chicken had a clean fresh taste. The mac & cheese was delicious and very cheesy, potato salad very good and fresh, there was nothing disappointing about this meal besides the fact that I should have tried it a long time ago!! The only thing I missed was the fact that they do not serve mash potatoes, gravy, corn, biscuits or rolls which are some things I'm just accustomed to having with fried chicken. Their sides lean more on the bbq joint side to me but delicious none the less. Great crisp on the chicken. I was asked if I wanted to substitute my sides from slaw and beans to something else. I said yes, and chose Mac and cheese with collard greens. Once at the restaurant I was charged an up-charge, which I wasn't aware of. I also ordered a coke and fried green tomatoes with ranch. I would recommend that you give this establishment a visit.
