    Ceviche Clasico

Location was cute but it's also really hard to go wrong with anywhere in Del Mar. The waiter was nice, seems he was the only one working on a slow Thursday afternoon. With that said, the service was slow. We got the ceviche, lomo Saltado and I got the queen carafe of Peruvian champagne. The ceviche was interested in that it was served hominy, what I think might be steamed yucca and catch of the day was yellowtail which is my personal favorite fish. However I'd rate the dish a 2/10 as the flavor was lacking and it was odd to be served with so much of the same texture. There was no crunch or dimension to the dish. I'm also from LA and we have amazing ceviche so I could be biased but even compared to a grocery store bought ceviche it barely held up. The lomo saltado had good flavor however the cuts of meat were interesting ... I almost expected it to be served with sliced up pieces of meat and fries but it wasn't quite what I expected. I'd give it an 7/10 bc I liked the flavor of the marinade/sauce. It wasn't until we asked specifically for green sauce and hot sauce that we got it but I think the green sauce should automatically be served with it bc it adds more to the flavor. I probably wouldn't come back as nothing inspired me to return for seconds or sparked my curiosity. However the place was nice and the waiter was sweet.

Lomo Saltado that looks like it's been previously eaten. Clearly missing meat.

We came for dinner around 6 PM midweek and it wasn't crowded at all. The service was extremely slow, it took almost an hour to get any food. I went inside and saw numerous dishes sitting on the counter. After an additional 10 minutes of waiting, I asked the server to check as it's been almost an hour and he rudely said you only waited 30 minutes and it's not a long time. Those same dishes were sitting on the counter, nothing coming out to other patrons either. The food we got was not hot at all, likely just sitting on the counter for at least 15 minutes. The Lomo Saltado was flavorless and seriously lacking in portion. Look at the picture, can you find any meat? We only had 3 tiny pieces that taste like rubber. The salmon dish looked good in picture, but was flavorless and cold. The seafood fried rice was just rice mixed with seafood, by far the worse chaufa I've ever eaten. Strongly recommend going somewhere else for edible warm food.

Stopped by on a Sunday for dinner. Cute little spot with all outdoor seating. We ordered the ceviche classico, chaufa de mariscos, lomo saltado, and half roasted chicken. Everything was good but nothing really stood out.

Obsessed! My sister found this place on Yelp when we were looking for a dinner spot nearby that served seafood. The reservation system made it easy to book a time (and change it when we were a little delayed). We came on a Saturday evening and it was basically empty. The ambiance was very cute (both outside and inside), and I could see this being such a cute date night spot. Everything on the menu looked delicious and fairly priced, and more importantly it tasted amazing! Literally everything we ordered was perfection -- no complaints. The drinks were okay (not bad, but not spectacular). I'd gotten the sangria which I wish was a little sweeter, and my sister ordered a non alcoholic Bellini (which she specifically asked for non-alc options and was pointed to that particular Bellini)... she ended up getting an alcohol one anyways which she was a little annoyed at, but good thing her reasoning for going non-Alc wasn't that deep or else it'd be an actual problem. I'd say the service as nice, standard, but pretty slow tbh. It took a while to get any kind of attention when we needed it (but we were checked on throughout the meal), and even longer to get the check and for them to come back to take the payment.

    Squid ink Risotto

We were so excited to try this place but were unfortunately disappointed in our experience. I found Coya on the SOS app and the reviews looked promising. We went on a Saturday for lunch and were seated promptly. The ambiance is fun and the place is nicely decorated. Our server took our drink orders and then came back later to take our meal orders. We ordered a pomegranate limeade and their house made drink (forget the name), and for meals we ordered the octopus appetizer, lomo saltodo, squid ink risotto, and a kids lomo saltodo. The drinks were good. However it took a long time for the food to come out. Our server brought my daughter's meal first, then after some more time brought out our meals. Except they forgot my meal and instead he placed the octopus appetizer in front of me as if it were my meal. After waiting a little longer he asked if we were missing a meal (I was sitting there waiting and I said yes), at that point they rushed my order and it was obvious because the beef on my plate came undercooked. My husband's risotto barely had any rice, and he didn't like the fish it came with. Both portions were really small. Not much beef on my plate, and being pregnant, I avoided the undercooked pieces (I didn't ask for it to be redone because we were in a rush). My husband ate the undercooked pieces and later he had an upset stomach. The sauce in my dish was good but that was the only good thing about it. Service was average. Overall pretty disappointed in our experience as it had the potential to be so much better. We always love trying new places and new cuisines but this one was unfortunately a letdown.

Went to this wonderful Peruvian restaurant after the Banksy exhibit. Parking was a challenge, but we managed to park on the side street. Waiter took care of us and the food came out fast! The octopus appetizer was delicious. My rice and seafood plate eas delicious. I must note the shrimp was sweet and tender. Lots of seafood and scallops hidden in the rice. The desert was good, but the real star was the food. Check this lovely restaurant out when you are in Del Mar, you wont be disappointed.

Such a cool, unique restaurant in the heart of Del Mar! Very authentic Peruvian dishes that's full of flavor and worthy of all the accolades it's received in the past. The servers were friendly and attentive. A bit noisy with music playing loudly mixed with all the chattering from nearby tables. But since all seating is outdoors, the noise is somewhat diffused. Dishes we ordered: Peruvian Scallops appetizer - 3/5, although the presentation was fantastic, the scallop to cheese ratio was way off. The little scallops were buried deep under a mountain of baked cheese which made it hard to taste the scallops, which should've been the star of the dish. Loma Saltado - 5/5, it's no wonder this steak dish is popular among patrons. It definitely lives up to the hype. Pork Sandwich - 5/5, another popular favorite, and AGREED! Yuca Fries - 4/5, tasty but the cut was a bit thick. Cilantro Chicken Rice soup - 4/5 House Sangria - 5/5 Only big disappointment was that they ran out of passion fruit ice cream, which would've been a refreshing dessert. Ah well, next time, I want to be whisked away to Peru for a delightful meal, Coya you'll be my Secret getaway!

    Baby Chicken
    Julie B.

Coya Peruvian Secret earned one of the top restaurants for a reason. As my first time experiencing Peruvian food, I was not disappointed. Service was exceptional, and while they are shorter on staff upon opening (1 main server & 1 chef) the quality made a nice experience. Their baby chicken is an underrated gem. There was a lot of cheese on their special scallops, but the affogato was delicious with homemade gelato. Portions were appropriate for the pricing and amount given. There is street parking both up front and behind the alley, and reservations can be made via OpenTable. Most of the seating is outdoors.

The food are tasty and baby chicken is big portion. I like the beef in lomo are super good! My husband and I were fighting for it. Would be even better is good size as baby chicken. The area is good and nice decoration. Easy street parking.

We wet here for Valentines Day and we had an absolutely wonderful time! Food came out incredibly fast! We started out with the ceviche mixto and empanadas! Both were divine. We LOVED the acidity of the ceviche which was fantastic with the savory nature of the empanada. I only wish the empanada was bigger or came with more that just one. Either way - it was delicious and comes with two great dipping sauces and a small salad. I'll definitely be back just for that Ceviche! We got the Macho special and the Lomo Saltado. Both were absolutely fantastic. I loved the macho and my partner died over the taste of the ribeye and the onions! OMG the onions and sauce! Only complaint was that the Lomo Saltado only came town 2 potato's! I wish I came with more. Rice was dry but the....everything else more than made up for it. Great date spot!

    Quatro leches
    Pranjali S.

4.5 stars. I have tried 3 Peruvian restaurants in North county (Qero, Manka, Coya) and this is the best. Their food is top notch. Their service and the overall ambiance needs some work. The restaurant is described as a quaint vintage cottage with vines running all over. At night, with the lights, it looks cute. But honestly, with the exception of the two tables right underneath the vines, the rest of the seating is just a mix and match of tables and chairs. There are a few tables that extend outside the restaurant patio area and it feels like you are sitting on the pavement rather in the restaurant. We almost got seated on one of those tables and requested to be moved to community high top table instead. If you are a party of 2, my recommendation would be to choose the tables right underneath the vine near the window. The service was a little underwhelming. Our server came to our table pretty quickly to take our order but after that, she disappeared for a while and we had to wait quite a while to flag her down for dessert, to-go boxes and the check. There were about 3 different servers and the other servers were more prompt with their tables. The menu is selected but hits all the major Peruvian dishes I've previously eaten. We ordered the classic ceviche, the lomo saltado and the half roasted baby chicken. We also got the pisco sour and Cusquena beer. We ended the meal with a quatro leches. The ceviche was excellent. Peruvian ceviche is a little different from the Mexican ones I've had before. The catch of the day was sea bass. The whole plate was tart, fresh and delicious. The yams were a great addition. We enjoyed it thoroughly. The portion was bigger than what we expected too. The lomo saltado was very good, but we would have liked a little more meat and a little less of the potatoes and the tomatoes. The meat was cooked perfectly. I've always found the filet mignon a little chewy but this one was on the medium/well side which we liked. The sauce was excellent. The whole plate was very filling but we'd have liked slightly more protein than the starch. The half roasted baby chicken was the star of the night. The chicken was cooked very well. The bed of rice, salsa and the aioli elevated the plate. We thoroughly enjoyed this plate and definitely recommend getting it. It is large enough that it could be shared by 2 people for sure. The quatro leches was disappointing. The biscuit added as the second layer was too dry and there was a weird raw powdery taste to the whole dessert. It got slightly better when you took a bit of all the layers together but I think they went overboard with this dessert and it ended up not being the classic that I'm used to. The drinks were good. I liked the pisco sour. It was slightly more eggy than I'd like but still good. The beer was interesting and my husband found it decent. The whole meal cost us about $85 without tips. For the quality and quantity we got, it was absolutely worth the price. We will be back here when we want Peruvian food, and will hope for better service and try to book the table under the vines.

And we are back! Tried something different, delicious as usual with the best service. Love the outdoor seating list, clean and beautifully decorated. Ambiance is casual and welcoming! Don't forget to order their quatro leches dessert! Ceviché mixto is so good and definitely enough to share around the table.

Super cute restaurants that has a covered outdoor setting, plenty of heaters. What I like about this place is it really brings a cultural feel, it makes you feel like you are in Central America. Food is very tasty. I really enjoyed the traditional drink, it wasn't too sweet as many places make it way too much sugar.

Coya Peruvian Secret Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Coya Peruvian Secret

Is their a place to stay overnight?

There are hotels in Del Mar

    Do they have live music?

No, at least the few times I've been there.

Is there a kids menu here?

    Yes

Do I have to make reservations for Mother's Day? Would love to bring our mom here and eat some good food! She is Peruvian and we love Peruvian food we could eat it all day everyday jajaja

In my experience, reservations are essential. There are simply too few seats to comfortably predict the seating situation at any particular time.

Can we reserve a table for 3 on the outside patio?

Definitely. In practice, almost all seating is outdoors.

I cant seem to find a menu and their website does not have one?? How is the pricing for lunch time.?

Just had lunch yesterday. Prices for the excellent food and service, to me, are very reasonable. Wine, appetizer, entree, and complimentary fried zucchini and cannoli for birthday (enough to take home leftovers) for two people around $100/w tip.

I didn't see this on the menu but if asked, would they be able to make aji de gallina?

It's called something else but they have it. Yes. You can get it.
