We were here last month for my daughter's graduation. We were seated in a booth by the bar and I'm glad we were. The bartenders and waiters kept coming over to dote on the graduate and it was very sweet to see. She even got a complimentary key lime pie and four weeks later we are still talking about it. We were treated like VIPs which really elevated the whole experience. The interior is immaculately classic with that "old money" subtle vibe. In addition to a world-class butchery, steak 48 also has a fantastic fresh seafood bar. As with any elevated dining experience, my philosophy and recommendation is always to order a wide variety of dishes and curate them in partnership with recommendations from our waiter. This experience was no different. My wife and I ordered the house bread, roasted Brussels sprouts, and hasselback potatoes for sides and appetizers. For mains we indulged in a dry aged prime bone-on rib eye, shrimp, and each ordered a lobster tail from the fresh seafood bar. Cocktails were also ordered. We ended with a complimentary anniversary dessert. The highlights were the dry aged rib eye and the lobster tail. It was a feast worthy of a king. I will most certainly be back to steak 48 to celebrate life's next milestone with my wonderful wife. I made a reservation on OpenTable for 2 and noted that it was a special occasion. After arriving and self-parking, we were quickly shown to our table. Once seated, the hostess passed me an envelope with a sweet card from the GM congratulating us on our special milestone. I got a refreshing lychee mocktail. All the food was fabulous. We started with their hanging bacon and their complimentary bread rolls. The hanging bacon slices were thick, beautifully presented, and delicious. We also got the scallop entree for an appetizer. It came with 6 huge, tender, perfectly cooked and seasoned scallops and an extraordinarily delightful sauce. I held onto the sauce for my steak! We each got a steak- petite filet mignon medium rare for me, and bone-in ribeye rare for my husband. They were cooked exactly as we ordered and absolutely scrumptious. At the end we got the Triple Chocolate Bomb which was rich, decadent, and gorgeous. It also came with a very personal touch - a note written in Chocolate on the plate! Incredible attention to detail for each guest. Service was extremely attentive. Our water glasses were refilled frequently! They paced the courses well and did not make us feel rushed. Lighting was dim but each table's light could be brightened for menu browsing. A couple of additional delighters-- the toilets automatically open their lids when you are there, they auto-flush, and their lids auto-close. I love the high tech and very clean bathroom. Came here for a work dinner and we had a wonderful time. The ambience was good and I liked how we could change the brightness of the lamps on the table as needed. The bathroom was also nice and had heated toilets and thick paper towels. The service was great as well, our servers were really nice and knowledgable. They explained the menu and were familiar with everything and were able to answer all of our questions. They also checked in on us frequently and changed our plates in a timely manner. And for the star of the show, the food! We enjoyed a variety of the menu and did family style for our appetizers, sides, and desserts, which was amazing so we could try a little bit of everything. They started us off with complimentary bread which was nice. For appetizers, we started off with the seafood tower, which you can customize with oysters, crab, shrimp, and even lobsters. We opted out of the lobster but the oysters were fresh and delicious and the shrimp were huge. The cold bar is actually displayed towards the center of the restaurant which is a nice show of how fresh their seafood is. We also got the hamachi, torched scallops + caviar, A5 kobe "wine fed" ny strip, and wagyu beef tartare. All the appetizers we tried were delicious but I was blown away by the beef tartare. This was the best tartare I've ever had! For our main course, a majority of us got the ribeye cap, which was delicious and a lot bigger than I expected. I got it cooked medium rare and it was perfectly seasoned and cooked. Just enough salt and beautiful crust. We also got some lobster tails on the side. We got a lottt of sides and shared them. We tried the creamed spinach, mac and cheese, sautéed wild mushrooms, sautéed sweet corn, blistered shishito peppers, roasted brussels sprouts, crispy hasselback potatoes, boursin cheese whipped potatoes, chef daniel's au gratin potatoes, caesar salad, and broccoli. My favorite side was the sautéed mushrooms. I think the other sides were pretty good but nothing extraordinary. I've dined here several times and the food and service have always been excellent, which is why we chose it again to celebrate my husband's birthday. The ambiance is beautiful and the kitchen consistently delivers, but unfortunately this visit reminded me why the noise level can be a challenge here. When I made the reservation on OpenTable, I specifically requested a quiet table since it was just the two of us and previous visits have been quite loud. We also arrived early hoping that would help. The evening actually started out perfectly -- we were the first guests seated and the dining room was calm and relaxing. Shortly after, two very large parties (around 10-12 people each) were seated right next to us. The noise level escalated quickly and became overwhelming. It got to the point where my husband and I could barely hear each other and eventually stopped trying to talk because it was just too difficult. Our server was also taking care of those large parties, so service slowed quite a bit. Dessert took a while and the wait for the check was longer than expected. When I asked if there were quieter tables available, our server mentioned that the window tables tend to be the quieter option if you arrive early and request them. That was a little frustrating to hear since I had done both when making the reservation. That said, the food was outstanding. We ordered the Wagyu Tomahawk with broccoli, corn, and whipped potatoes, and everything was absolutely delicious and cooked perfectly. I truly want to give this restaurant five stars because the food and service have always been strong. But after multiple visits where the noise level has been an issue, it's hard to ignore how much it affects the overall experience -- especially for a special occasion dinner. Celebrated my birthday and wedding anniversary here and we had an amazing experience! We had a 4:30pm reservation and got there early so we were told to wait in the bar area first. We were seated in a private booth section which we loved. Jared was our server and he was very professional and helpful. We ordered bone-in ribeye, upgraded from 3oz to 8oz Kobe, chicken fried lobster rolls, crispy potatoes, shell and cheese, au gratin potatoes, the red velvet bread pudding, and vanilla ice cream and caramel cake. I wanted to add, the complimentary bread is DELICIOUS. I've never had bread like it before. I loved how juicy my ribeye was, and I enjoyed the uniqueness of the chicken fried lobster roll. We enjoyed how private, clean and high tech the bathrooms were as well, they definitely say a lot about a restaurant. The sides were good but I've had equally good au gratin potatoes and Brussels sprouts at other restaurants. The complimentary bread reminded me too much of the crescent rolls you buy at the store which I'm not a big fan of. Half way through eating I started to feel sick to my stomach. I don't have any food restrictions or allergies. I eat everything so for me to not feel well after eating half of my food I was shocked. I still feel sick to my stomach. The drinks were good and the only thing that is worth the price. If you decide to go I'd recommend just going to the bar for drinks. They don't offer complimentary desserts for celebrations. I was not able to get a feel of the main dining area, but the private room was neatly decorated with a Del Mar racetrack painting and some shear curtains. The room was also very noise proofed. Had meatballs and calamari for an appetizer, both were very good but did not stand out. The Caesar salad was also pretty good. What stood out was the bone-in ribeye. Was perfectly cooked (medium rare) and was delicious. Hard to describe, but was the best steak I've had in a while. Service as always is stellar and a high end experience from start to finish. This was a work dinner with 12 people. Appetizers and sides were ordered family-style, with two of each for the table. I ordered the 45-day dry-aged bone-in ribeye (22 oz, $154) with a butter-poached Alaskan king crab leg meat add-on. If I could do this everytime I would. The butter soaked into my steak so beautifully, and I actually pushed the crab to the side so I could eat it at my own pace with my whole plate. Family-style appetizers included crispy shrimp ($31), tomato and Alaskan king crab stack ($48), hanging bacon ($29), and (not pictured) Pacific yellowtail hamachi ($39). The shrimp was so good, 10/10 recommend as well as the hamachi. Bacon didn't do it for me, wasn't really a fan. The stack was delicious and it actually felt like a palette cleanser. Family-style sides included roasted Brussels sprouts ($19), crème brûlée corn ($21), shishito peppers ($16), and Alaskan king crab mashed potatoes ($52). The crème brûlée corn always slaps, 10/10. Shishito peppers were a knew side for me they were good and I wish I had took more home. Mashed potatoes were good but I actually don't think the needed the crab. I liked the au gratin potatoes more. I had a non-alcoholic passion fruit margarita ($16). Super tasty but I'm sure it's better with liquor I just don't like to do that while on the clock and needing to drive home. The restaurant is very nice and everyone workin was well dressed, professional and polite. We came in for a birthday celebration with friends. The restaurant wasn't able to accommodate a table for 8 so we split our reservation into 2 tables of 4. The manager Justin was kind enough to allow our kids to sit at a table near us and combine the checks. It was a very elegant meal for us and the kids! Ha! Huge thanks for allowing us to have a beautiful dinner for our birthday celebration with kids. The staff were so wonderful and they make the best Tequila Sours and Gin Sours!!! They brought bread with butter to the table to start which was the most mouth watering bread I've ever had. I don't usually eat the bread baskets but I made an exception here. For starters we had the Hamachi Crudo, Burrata and fries. The blue cheese aoli was very good, I want to take some home! For mains we ordered the Australian Wagyu Filet Mignon with broccoli, creme brûlée creamed corn and spinach artichoke side. I highly recommend the creamed corn! That was so yummy with the steak! Steak 48 is amazing! Celebrated an anniversary dinner here and the service was great. The waitress was attentive, friendly, and ready to go with recommendations and anything we needed. We really felt taken care of here. The food: - Complimentary bread rolls (think biscuits cooked in a skillet with butter). - Rhode Island Calamari & shrimp - 10/10. Nothing else to say. - 22oz Ribeye was cooked perfectly with a nice crust. 10/10. - Whipped Praline Sweet Potato - less crunchy streusel topping like Ruth's Chris, but was amazingly subtle with the right amount of praline. 9.5/10. - Mac n cheese - crowd favorite. 10/10. - Creamed spinach - Simple yet delicious. 9/10. - Dessert: Lou Lou's Cookies and Cream Gelato cake (think cookies and cream ice cream sandwich). All around great experience here at Steak 48 to celebrate a nice evening. We order two steaks to share - the dry aged ribeye and the filet and had a couple sides to split as well. We also loved their bread service - yum! The food came out quickly and the steaks were cooked well however they did get a little extra cooked once it hit our hot plates. Overall great flavorful steaks! Our server was so friendly and guided us through the meal. Since we were so full at the end, he wanted to still send us home with a sweet treat! We got to enjoy the chocolate cake for the next two days. Definitely stop by here if you're looking for some great steaks! read more

After several excellent visits we returned with friends from Orange County who wanted to try it. Service was excellent but a miss on a steak ordered medium. Came ultra rare to raw. Sent back and then came back well done in pieces. As unappetizing as it was, my wife didn't want to send it back again because everyone else was midway through their meals. I noted in my OpenTable review that a restaurant specializing in steak should do better. It really spoiled the meal for all of us. The manager reached out with his name and number, but after trying to reach him 3 times and leaving messages - he never called back. He was always in meetings but the receptionist promised he would get the message. What had been such a great place for us on so many occasions will no longer be our go to destination of choice. Our waiter started off strong -- he was knowledgeable about celiac disease, made sure to communicate my daughter's needs to the kitchen, and made us feel confident we were in good hands. That's exactly why what happened next was so frustrating. When boxing up our leftovers, he combined my daughter's steak with my son's in the same container. My son's steak had been in contact with gluten, which means my daughter's food is now cross-contaminated and completely unsafe for her to eat. For someone with celiac disease, this isn't a minor mistake -- it's a real health concern. I called the restaurant to speak with a manager. The person who answered promised a callback the following day. I never heard from anyone. For a restaurant at this price point, we expect both careful execution and basic accountability when something goes wrong. We got neither. read more

Came here to celebrate. There are self parking areas and valet as well. Walked in and it was so dark. Some people might like that ambiance, but definitely was not for me. All the people there were nice, greeted us and was pretty attentive. We got some salad, a steak, crab cakes and creme brulee corn. Shall I quibble that this restaurant, which claims to be located in Del Mar, is almost certainly not located within the City of Del Mar? It reminds me of the joke in Los Angeles that, wherever you are, you are only a block away from Beverly Hills. I don't care what city this restaurant is located in. This is an excellent, top notch restaurant in almost every way. The food and drinks were extremely good. The service was about as perfect as service can be. The decor is striking. I will only say that, looking around the place, some dining areas of the restaurant are nicer and, frankly, better than others. If and when I return, I will do my homework and try and get to the better areas. They have a full bar, of course, and a wine list than is incredibly long. They also have many "signature" cocktails and some mocktails, too. I tried the "Walnut" Old Fashioned and it was subtle and very nice. I also had a glass of wine that was probably the largest wine pour, in the largest wine glass, I have ever had. And I am not complaining. We started with the "hanging bacon" appetizer. If you like bacon--and who doesn't--you will be very happy with this dish. You get four very well-seasoned and delicious thick pieces of bacon hanging from a weird medieval-looking contraption. The crab cakes entree was extraordinary. There is almost no filler in these crab cakes. The petite filet with blue cheese "caked" on top was perfectly cooked and very good. For the sides, the Hasselback potatoes looked boring but they were very well-seasoned and delightfully crispy. The creamed spinach and artichoke is exactly what you think it is. It is decadent but nothing out of the ordinary. Because we were celebrating an anniversary, the restaurant comped us a dessert--the vanilla caramel cake--that was both huge and delicious. It was served with a literal mountain of whipped cream on the side. One small final note: valet parking is $11, which, I suppose, is not too bad. The restaurant is located in the corner of a large shopping mall. You can park for free just about anywhere in the parking lot and in about 2 minutes you can walk to the front entrance. Just saying. Ok, so the restaurant is not located in Del Mar. It doesn't matter. This is a special occasion restaurant that is very special. Everything is done just about perfectly here. read more

We came to Steak 48 on 5/29 expecting a special night out, but ended with my wife getting violent food poisoning. The night started out with them not seating us at a high top table like we literally registered in our reservation because "we didnt put that down during the reservation". I would respect them if they were at least honest about it, and that they just overbooked but they started it out on a bad note. Now onto the mains for the meal. My wife ordered the chef's special ($185) and I had the bone-in ribeye. Within hours she was sick, and the reason we're confident it came from here is simple: we ate completely different meals and shared nothing of consequence, yet I was perfectly fine. The one thing that was hers alone was that chef's special. When that's the only variable, it isn't hard to connect the dots. We confirmed we ate the same things up to that day in the days leading up so it seems unlikely that it was something else. What took this from a bad night to a one-star review was how the restaurant handled it. We raised our concern the day after with a phone call and were told they'd look into it. Their "investigation" came back with nothing -- no acknowledgment, no accountability, and most tellingly, no attempt to make it right. Kris sounded like one of those corporate jackoffs who rehearses these kinds of things when it happens. No follow-up to see how she was doing, and an excuse that "chefs were gathering data", 5 days later, is evidence. We had to call and email them for a follow up, and there was no apology that felt sincere, no comp. Nothing. For a place charging $185 for a plate, taking a customer's illness seriously is the bare minimum, and they couldn't manage even that. The food being expensive is one thing; sending someone home sick and then shrugging it off is another. And offering your "personal email" as concession for doing nothing about this is about the move we expect of this place . We aren't doing this for a refund, it just helps to know a restaurant can show care and compassion instead of spewing off generic responses and so called data - but this one obviously can't. We won't be back, and I'd think twice before ordering the chef's special. read more

Went here for dinner to celebrate a special event and found it to be a great spot! I ordered a scallop appetizer, along with the dry aged ribeye and paired it with mushrooms and corn. Something to note is that the hot plates sizzle with certain sides, and for the corn it splattered a bit. I thought the meal was excellent and up to par with some of the other high end steakhouses in San Diego. Our server was amazing, he brought a lot of energy and was super welcoming. For that alone I would come back! Since we were celebrating an event, we were given a complimentary dessert along with a handwritten card. A good touch from them. read more

Talk about an expensive dinner but it was a memorable one! Ever since this spot opened I have heard incredible things about it and my husband and I decided to do a little date night dinner together since it had been awhile. It was a Friday night and wow it was a very busy spot and when you first walk in it does seem like a loud spot. Thankfully when they walked us to our table we got sat in a private booth that was much quieter and you could actually see into the kitchen which we love. We decided to splurge a little so we did go with one of the waygu steak options to share as well as the mac n cheese and hasselback potatoes as the sides. We also go the cesar salad to share which they split onto 2 plates for us and it comes with a poached egg on top which was interesting but I enjoyed. We did start with the crispy shrimp which I am not the biggest shrimp person but these were so good!! How could I forget about the dirty martini. It was the largest martini I've ever had and they give you the shaker on the side so it is well worth the money. Now the house bread that they bring out is just buttery goodness our waiter even gave us some to go as well as the creamy horseradish which was perfection! This is a beautiful place starting with the bar and a beautiful large volume martini. This was a great way to start the nice evening and dinner. Service at the bar is special we were treated like royalty. So Spencer was a superb bartender. Food is served hot and delicious special mashed potatoes and filet mignon so good cook just right.
