I didn't try any of their food so I won't comment on that, though I did get a bite of blueberry millet muffin, and that was enjoyable, other than that, it seems that everyone more or less enjoyed their meal. As for me, I got the Joe's Special. It was a pretty standard plate of food: 3 eggs scrambled with some sausage and veggies, some breakfast potatoes, and a scone with some jam on the side. But the other two tasted great especially the morning glory! Yummmm Service was great too: our waitress was honest about the portion size and the two dishes were probably enough for the 3 of us females. We still wanted order one more and she recommended 1/2 size French toast. It's also located at a nice area where you can walk around. We parked the garage attached to the restaurant. FOOD (3/5) For our breakfast, we ordered the Antojito Benedict (3/5) -- Home made sopes with chili braised beef, black beans, poached eggs, shredded lettuce, sour cream, queso fresco, jalapeño crema and pico de gallo. The soles were overcooked -- possibly microwaved. The poached eggs were also overdone. ($21.00) Accompanying Black Beans (4/5) were terrific, and the Buttermilk Scone (4/5) we also ordered was great. ($5.50) SERVICE (3/5) -- The restaurant was less than half filled, but service was slow. We had to flag down a server for water and coffee refills. The manager was quite nice, however, hearing us out about the sopes, and giving us 50% discount on the dish. AMBIANCE (3/5) -- There's both indoor and outdoor seating. Inside, the room is small with hard services ... and noisy. We opted for one of the outdoor tables, which are actually in a fenced off area on Camino Del Mar sidewalk. I think I like this location even better as it's slightly bigger and only a block from the beach. I went for brunch on a Sunday around 1:00pm and it wasn't crowded. This morning I had an amazing breakfast burrito that was packed with flavor not to mention the fresh ingredients and warm tortilla really set this breakfast burrito apart from the rest. I customized it with beef birria, homemade guacamole, and breakfast potatoes. It was perfectly crunchy on the outside with all the ingredients meshing perfectly on the inside. This isn't something that's on the menu normally, so you'll have to ask for it. The secrets out, The Cottage in Del Mar makes the best burritos in the area! They also carry bottled Mexican Coca-Cola, which was exactly what I needed for a Sunday morning recovery (thanks Anthony Bourdain). The girlfriend is obsessed with their Clydesdale--a coffee they roast at their other location. It's espresso brewed over cinnamon and brown sugar, and honestly, it's life-changing if you've never tried it. I enjoyed the La Jolla location but this one did not live up to that standard unfortunately. We came at a less busy time, and sat indoors. They have outdoor seating, but it looked cramped and right next to the walkway and the road so not very inviting. The service was not very personable and only checked in on us once. We had to flag down someone to refill our coffee. We ordered the Benedict, French toast, and an omelet. The omelet was great, but the French toast tasted bland, and they charge for each fruit you add to it, so if you want bananas and blueberries you need to pay extra, which I found odd since the La Jolla location just brought a medley of fruit. The biggest disappointment was the syrup--it wasn't maple syrup but what looked like house-made pancake syrup, and the consistently was an unappetizing gooeyness instead of viscous. For the prices they charge I at least expect maple syrup, not high fructose corn syrup for my French toast. Overall I probably would skip this place and try something else next time I'm in Del Mar. read more

I grew up in La Jolla and always remembered my mother and her friends going to The Cottage for brunch and many times I went with her. It was great back then and it is still good now. I have been to many different restaurants in this location here in Del Mar and I would say this is one of my favorite ones that has been here. The Cottage is a solid breakfast or brunch option and it is usually pretty consistent and quick. Parking is plentiful in the parking garage attached, the first two hours are free. We were able to be seated for a party of three right when we arrived and our server was very polite. Inside is quite small, there aren't any very large tables however, it has a very cozy and homely feel to it. Service is also very fast so the tables will turn quickly. They have indoor seating and also outdoor seating which can be really nice depending on the weather. For my breakfast I chose the Chilaquiles and added chorizo. Unfortunately, it was soy chorizo, I wish they would have the real thing, but it was still really good. I also got a Cinnamon Roll and thought it was just OK. It was not gooey enough for my personal taste, but some may like it. Overall, I really enjoyed the breakfast and will stop in again in the near future. read more

First visit to this location, although I've been to the La Jolla restaurant often. This experience wasn't as good as I'd come to expect from their sister resto. We sat in the outdoor sidewalk area, and that part was very nice. The service was pleasant but sparse. My husband and I shared an order of Antojitos Benedict and a buttermilk scone for a late morning breakfast. The scone was delicious (sweet and crumbly, yet tender). My benedict, however, was a different story. The sopa they use as a base instead of an English muffin was so tough that I couldn't cut through it to eat it. My husband had trouble, too, but was hungry, liked the flavor, and is stronger than I am, so he struggled through both his half and mine. In the meantime, no server checked on us to see how our food was nor did they refill water. Eventually, my husband went inside to ask for our bill. When our server delivered the bill she asked how we enjoyed our food, so I told her that i hadn't been able to eat the benedict and that even my husband had trouble with it. She then brought the manager who took half the price of the benedict off our bill. I thought deducting half was odd (half was a first on me), but probably fair since he did eat it. We wanted to find a scenic place, close to the beach with good food and we TOTALLY found that! There's paid parking, free for the first hour then three dollars every thirty mins. Although they do leave the butter and jam out for who knows how long and there was dust or some kind of fuzzy in mine, which wasn't very appetizing. On a Sunday, I met up with a couple of friends for brunch at The Cottage in Del Mar. We chose it because it was a convenient for friends coming from North San Diego County, and going to this area of Del Mar is really lovely. However, it is crowded, and parking can be challenging on weekends. We met at just about 11:30. We checked in and were told that for our party of three, it would be about a 20 minute wait. Unfortunately, it turned into 45 minutes. There are some public benches along the street to wait, however it wasn't very comfortable and the sun was beating on us a bit. Anyway, the wait did give us some time to catch up, so we made the best of it. When we were seated, we got a table outside, which was a nice area with a bit of a view and some people-watching opportunities. Service wasn't super friendly, but it was efficient. The menu was quite large with both breakfast and lunch choices. The drinks varied form some breakfast cocktails to coffee drinks to juices. I was feeling a bit thirsty, and had already had some coffee, so I chose the watermelon juice. It was fresh and delicious. Not too many brunch places actually offer watermelon juice. I struggled between choosing the wild mushroom omelette and the smoked salmon hash, but ultimately chose the smoked salmon hash. It was a generous portion that I couldn't quite finish. It came with a scone with jam. I would say that the scone was good, but I probably wouldn't have chosen it. I did very much enjoy my smoked salmon hash and would absolutely eat it again. All in all, it is a lovely venue with good food, in a beautiful, but busy location. I wouldn't mind returning, but as I don't really enjoy waiting for my table, I would probably choose a different location or a different time. read more
