Breakfast Burrito
Hal J.

This morning I had an amazing breakfast burrito that was packed with flavor not to mention the fresh ingredients and warm tortilla really set this breakfast burrito apart from the rest. I customized it with beef birria, homemade guacamole, and breakfast potatoes. It was perfectly crunchy on the outside with all the ingredients meshing perfectly on the inside. This isn't something that's on the menu normally, so you'll have to ask for it. The secrets out, The Cottage in Del Mar makes the best burritos in the area! They also carry bottled Mexican Coca-Cola, which was exactly what I needed for a Sunday morning recovery (thanks Anthony Bourdain). The girlfriend is obsessed with their Clydesdale--a coffee they roast at their other location. It's espresso brewed over cinnamon and brown sugar, and honestly, it's life-changing if you've never tried it. I also had a simple side salad with homemade lemon vinaigrette, pickled carrots, tomatoes, and cucumber. It was fresh, light, and the perfect compliment to the meal. The service and the staff are always a big part of why we keep coming back. Désirée is bubbly, fun, and welcoming every time we visit, and Trevor, the manager, is always kind, attentive, and runs a great restaurant.

Boy, do I love a good breakfast / brunch, so when I saw that The Cottage was opening a location closer to home - I was dialed in! With three locations around the San Diego area - Del Mar, La Jolla & Encinitas - You're sure to find not only one close to you, but your favorite location as well. This review is strictly based on my new favorite location - Del Mar. This location is situated in the Del Mar Plaza {be sure to poke around the bookstore, market and shops while you are here} - There is an attached parking garage {60 minutes free with an hourly charge occurring afterwards}, as well as plenty of street parking in and around Del Mar. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant itself isn't huge and will most likely be busy when you arrive, but even if there is a wait, it won't be long & it will be more than worth the wait.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Even with a bustling atmosphere, we were greeting as soon as we walked in by several team members and were able to scoop up a seat on the outside patio.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The outdoor section provides the perfect backdrop to a wonderful breakfast / brunch, especially on a beautiful, sunny day in San Diego.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We had such a pleasant experience with the team - Friendly, gave us the best recommendations and genuinely seemed so happy to be there & assist with the guests - Great customer service always helps to elevate the experience and we received this 10 fold. As for the menu, there is something here for everyone {both Breakfast & Lunch} - Fresh Bakery items, Pancake options galore, Eggs, Classic Breakfasts, Benedicts, Omelettes, Salads, Bowls, and Sandwiches. Drinks also come in a wide variety - Coffee, Kombucha, Cocktails, Mocktails, Juices, Beer, Wine & Bubbles. On our visit, we opted for Breakfast - The All American Breakfast for the Hubs {2 Over-Medium Eggs, Bacon, Cottage Potatoes, and Buttermilk Pancake {this was a sub for a House-Made Scone} & a Roasted Vegetable Scramble for me {Perfectly cooked Eggs with Asparagus, Mushrooms, Cauliflower, Broccoli, Cheddar & Brie - Served with Cottage Potatoes and a Side of Toast with Scrumptious Whipped Butter and the most Delicious Jam - I still think about this Butter & Jam combo}. The Cottage also has a killer homemade Hot Sauce - Put this on everything! Tip - You can make any Omelette into a Scramble or Frittata. I Can't wait to go back and explore each and every breakfast option! Allergy side note - Check out the website for an in-depth look at the menu allergen information, if needed. As someone with food allergies, this is the best site I've seen to dive into which menu items are safe to consume - Thank you Cottage!

I've been to the cottage La Jolla location many times but this was my first time at the Del Mar! And it did not disappoint.. and the wait wasn't as long as La Jolla location. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Dog friendly and will bring my cavapoo next time~[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We ordered mor k g glory sandwich ($22) eggs La Jolla ($21) and 2 piece stuffed French toast ($14.75). I'd say the ftench toast was meh. But the other two tasted great especially the morning glory! Yummmm Service was great too: our waitress was honest about the portion size and the two dishes were probably enough for the 3 of us females. We still wanted order one more and she recommended 1/2 size French toast. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's also located at a nice area where you can walk around.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We parked the garage attached to the restaurant. We left within 1 hour and didn't have to pay but not sure what the parking fee is there. I will definitely come back to this place in the near future!!

We've been fans of The Cottage in La Jolla for over a decade. This is the first time we had breakfast at The Cottage location in Del Mar, and it didn't live up to our expectations. FOOD (3/5) For our breakfast, we ordered the Antojito Benedict (3/5) -- Home made sopes with chili braised beef, black beans, poached eggs, shredded lettuce, sour cream, queso fresco, jalapeño crema and pico de gallo. The soles were overcooked -- possibly microwaved. The poached eggs were also overdone. ($21.00) Accompanying Black Beans (4/5) were terrific, and the Buttermilk Scone (4/5) we also ordered was great. ($5.50) SERVICE (3/5) -- The restaurant was less than half filled, but service was slow. We had to flag down a server for water and coffee refills. The manager was quite nice, however, hearing us out about the sopes, and giving us 50% discount on the dish. AMBIANCE (3/5) -- There's both indoor and outdoor seating. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Inside, the room is small with hard services ... and noisy.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]We opted for one of the outdoor tables, which are actually in a fenced off area on Camino Del Mar sidewalk. Nice but you're maybe 25' from CDM traffic[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. Overall, we'll order better next time based on what we like on the menu in La Jolla.

Mimosas are delicious

The Cottage has been a long time favorite breakfast restaurant of mine for many years. Their original restaurant is located in La Jolla, but today I tried their Del Mar, CA location. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I think I like this location even better as it's slightly bigger and only a block from the beach.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I went for brunch on a Sunday around 1:00pm and it wasn't crowded.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The service was great, the food was delicious and the vibe was spot on.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Very relaxing atmosphere.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]FYI... - it can get super crowded on weekends before noon[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] - prices for breakfast might appear a little high but it's reasonable for the area - parking structure fills up fast so recommend street parking in the neighborhood

Southern California scramble

I really enjoyed the La Jolla location so decided to give this location a try! We came around noon on a Saturday and we were seated right away. It was pretty busy and a short line formed after we got in. We ordered 3 dishes to share among the 4 of us: -Braised beef hash (5/5): I love the combination of flavors from the tender braised beef, eggs, potatoes, avocado and veggies. Delicious and my favorite! There was not much beef though so I wish there was more -Southern California scramble (5/5): solid scramble with bacon, guacamole and potatoes. Tasty, light and fluffy! -Brioche French toast (4/5): good and moist but typical French toast, big portion. We forgot to ask for fruit toppings but I think it should be already included The hash and scramble each came with a big scone with crystalized sugar top, and the strawberry jam that came with it was delicious! Overall, everything was good and we were all full. Service was friendly and food came out quickly. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There's mostly outdoor seating since the interior is pretty small but the view was nice and the heater was turned on.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Parking in the structure is free for the first hour but $3 every 30 mins after which was pricey. I would be back!

Love the La Jolla location so came here while in the area! We were luckily seated right away when we arrived around noon on a Saturday and noticed a short line after. Food came out quickly. The 4 of us shared 3 dishes: Braised beef hash (5/5): my favorite, I love the flavors and variety of eggs, potatoes and veggies but wish there was more beef Southern California scramble (4.5/5): egg scramble is good and fresh, scone is a bit dry Brioche French toast (4/5): typical French toast, big portion but we forgot to add extra toppings [[HIGHLIGHT]]The interior is pretty small so it was mainly outdoor seating, but the view is nice and they turned on the heaters which was nice.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service was fast and friendly. Parking is free for 1 hour in the attached structure, $3 every 30 mins after which is pretty pricey. I would come back!

I grew up in La Jolla and always remembered my mother and her friends going to The Cottage for brunch and many times I went with her. It was great back then and it is still good now. I have been to many different restaurants in this location here in Del Mar and I would say this is one of my favorite ones that has been here. The Cottage is a solid breakfast or brunch option and it is usually pretty consistent and quick. Parking is plentiful in the parking garage attached, the first two hours are free. We were able to be seated for a party of three right when we arrived and our server was very polite. Inside is quite small, there aren't any very large tables however, it has a very cozy and homely feel to it. Service is also very fast so the tables will turn quickly. They have indoor seating and also outdoor seating which can be really nice depending on the weather. For my breakfast I chose the Chilaquiles and added chorizo. Unfortunately, it was soy chorizo, I wish they would have the real thing, but it was still really good. I also got a Cinnamon Roll and thought it was just OK. It was not gooey enough for my personal taste, but some may like it. Overall, I really enjoyed the breakfast and will stop in again in the near future.

Alya S.

I visited around noon and had a good experience overall. The drinks arrived in a reasonable amount of time, and the food was served promptly. The service was friendly and attentive throughout the meal. I ordered the chilaquiles, which were good, though I personally preferred the ones at the La Jolla location. [[HIGHLIGHT]]While I think the La Jolla location has slightly better food, the Del Mar location definitely has the better view.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Overall, it's a great spot with good service, a nice atmosphere, and beautiful scenery.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Shrimp & Crab - Salad
Nancy T.

Quaint and cute restaurant in Delmar on the corner between plaza and 15th. The wait time was less than 20 mins. Quick service and the food was soooo good! There's light drink menus. Wine/draft/mimosas along with a crafted coffee menu. I ordered and enjoyed the Clydesdale Shaken Espresso. I usually prefer my coffee sweet, but I didn't have to sweeten it at all and drank it perfectly as is. For food, I ordered the shrimp and crab salad (add goat cheese) it was so light and delicious! The swagyu burger, Mac and cheese, and even the kids menu were great portions. If you're a fries person, the fries here are extra fluffy and crispy. Definitely will come back. (Parking is available in their paid lot. It was $3.60 for 1.5 hours)

Machaca scramble with avocado
Sue H.

Sunday at ten, a short wait then a table inside that has patio breeze. Brunch with old friends and a long, not rushed visit. Husbands both ordered the joes special. Scrambled eggs with sausage, mushrooms and spinach, cottage fries and scone. Mine also splurged on an orange juice ($9!) but everyone else had water. I ordered the Machaca beef scrambled eggs, with corn tortillas hold the black beans. Friend ordered a veggie omelette, with English muffins instead of scones. They think the scones here are dry. No complaints from my guy about dry. All gone! The Machaca was a tender shredded beef with peppers and onions. There was a lot of meat scrambled with the eggs. The tortillas were super high quality wow. I had them add avocado (+$2.50) and it was at least a half fruit. Delicious and plenty left for the next day. Our server brought boxes and happily split the check on her kiosk. We appreciate not being rushed and sat around awhile afterwards.

What a beautiful, bigger than it looks, small restaurant that we just happened upon on our way down to San Diego thanks to YELP! We wanted to find a scenic place, close to the beach with good food and we TOTALLY found that! There's paid parking, free for the first hour then three dollars every thirty mins. The restaurant does not validate but it's a not a big deal. We were seated right away by a lovely woman who was smiling and couldn't have been more friendly! We sat outside and checked out the small menu, The food came out quickly but was just delicious! I highly recommend this place, I'm so happy I found it! The neighborhood was quaint and walkable. There's a constant stream of people walking by and a ton of bikes and not too many cars! This place is a not so hidden gem, please try it!!

That was cool. The staff here are friendly and knowledgeable of their products. I ordered their Citrus Celery juice. For a celery juice, it was well balanced with flavors of orange, apple, grapes, and grapefruit. My fiancé ordered the beet root smoothie with the cacao chips. This was also good. A little bit on the sweet side especially for being beet based. But still very refreshing and also well balanced out with the cacao. The açaí bowl was the best I ever had. The presentation said it all. It was paired well with green apple, raspberries, bananas, walnuts, all the oats, maybe Nutella drizzle and coconut shavings with Greek yogurt. I was down for a second bowl. But it was very filling. Once again a perfect blend of everything. We also tried the avocado toast. I was happy to see that this dish came with more than just avocado and toast. They included an egg arugula, and a tomato. Nowadays, that is way more than what other cafes offer. I thought it was a good price for what you got.

I went with the golden milk latte to drink, and it was fabulous. I did have them add a shot of espresso to it because when I was ordering a latte, I definitely was looking for caffeine. It's lovely with turmeric, cinnamon, oat milk, MCT oil and black pepper. I also ordered the Hot Chick salad. It came out looking gorgeous. The salad tasted really good, the chicken was seasoned nicely, and I liked the different textures with the rice, the quinoa and the roasted corn. The dressing was super tasty too. When I got towards the end of my salad, my last few pieces of avocado were bad. It wasn't a dealbreaker for my experience, but I would've definitely preferred that they would've left those pieces out. Also, the little toasted cracker things tasted like cardboard, dry and flavorless. I probably should've tried scooping up some of the salad with them, but I left them on the plate. Overall, I would definitely return to this location. You cannot beat them if you are looking for something fast, casual, and healthy. Definitely not on the cheap though, my salad and latte were $34 before tip, but I don't mind paying for good quality food that is fresh and healthy.

My favorite breakfast dishes are the chicken and waffle, country fried steak and french toasts. They perfectly bread the chicken and the homemade country gravy it adds that extra goodness to the meal. I also love their fresh-pressed juices, and I usually request a plantation iced tea -- iced tea mixed with pineapple juice. So refreshing! The decor is adorable too. It has a cozy farmhouse café vibe that makes the whole place feel warm and inviting. And the bread pudding from Sunny Side is definitely worth mentioning. I usually don't like bread pudding, but this is far from ordinary. It's made with croissants and chocolate, drizzled with chocolate sauce, dusted with powdered sugar, served with raspberries, and strawberries. You have to add the ice cream...cause why not? Absolutely indulgent and perfect for sharing. Totally worth those extra calories! Overall, we'll definitely keep dining here. The menu here is comprehensive with coffee (espresso, pour overs, cold brew), teas, specialty drinks, as well as breakfast and light bites to pair with a good start to the morning. We primarily came for a coffee run but a few of our team members decided to visit for breakfast the following day and from what I've heard, they're solid with the food! I look forward to coming back to give their bites a try. In theme for Saint Patrick's Day, they had a few special drinks but I opted for a traditional flat white this time. They had milk options but as a traditionalist, I went with whole milk. The coffee had great flavor and balance. The richness was bold and rounded out after every sip. I was tempted to grab a couple bags on my way out but seeing they had free shipping for online orders over $40 (about two bags), I decided to save some luggage space and order some when I was back home. The staff were friendly and efficient. I was impressed how many of them they were able to fit behind the small work area but they were experienced and worked collectively as a team. The drinks were prepared quick and for those liking them hot, you will be pleased with the freshness of that first sip. Overall, Achilles Coffee is a perfect small batch roaster to visit while you're in San Diego to get a great cup of coffee, a breakfast to go with it, and some bags of single origin or blend to bring back home for your own brew. And if you're interested in trying them out before you visit or just looking to restock, consider checking out their website and order from there. They even have a sampler to try their in-season batches. I guess their only Achilles' heel is that there aren't more of them but with five spots all across San Diego county, at least a San Diegan (or visitor) can get a taste of the sweet nectar marketed under this Greek warrior's moniker.

I'm glad my friend told me about this French Café. Merci mon amie! It's located in the Cedros…read moreDesign District which is the heart of Solana Beach. I decided to have brunch there but when I arrived everyone was watching a soccer game...rooting for the French Team. It was pleasant to see the owners, staff, and guests so into the game. It created a welcoming and fun atmosphere...making my French experience more authentic. Just be aware, that majority of the seating is outside with an overhead shade. I looove eating outdoors so the setting was perrrfect. When it was time to order, I went inside to place it at the counter. Not too long afterwards, my warm latte came out then my breakfast...I didn't have to wait at all. Everything was sooo yummy. C'est vraiment bon!! I can't wait to go back to try the other menu items. I highly recommend Madeleine to the Yelp Community :-)

(editing to add this is a French-owned and Black-owned business, in case folks are looking!)…read more I usually come here when I'm doing errands on Cedros - and I usually just want to get my français on and order a café crème and a croissant. But today I needed a little extra je ne sais quoi because my morning was annoying, so I decided to splurge on lunch and not just a pastry here. I asked Steve, the (très beau et gentille!) co-owner what the quiche of the day was. There were two: one with jambon (ham) and one with épinards et fromage de chèvre (spinach and goat cheese). When I hesitated, he told me that the spinach one was amazing. Even though it's $20 for a quiche plate, I decided to go for it. I thought I was going to get a sad little quiche slice for that amount and might regret it. But OMG, it was more than worth it! Already they have a lovely patio on this pretty street in this fancy design district. But it was also a HUGE and exceptionally savory rectangular slice, alongside a DELECTEABLE petite salade. I asked Steve what mustard they use in the vinaigrette, and he said plain old Dijon - but the proportions and the seasoning were EXCELLENT. So it was salad perfection, not heavily dressed at all, just delightful. The patio was full on a Friday with ladies who lunch - but did that include me, as a solo diner, since I am a lady who had lunch? I'm not sure, but you can feel comfortable here no matter what. And now I know Madeleine Cafe is much too good to just come for coffee and for ordering in French from Steve or his co-owner Emmanuel. I don't want to spend that much for lunch every day - but I'll be back!

What a cute little restaurant & bar! My husband and daughter treated me for Mother's Day lunch and…read morewhat a great time. The decor and ambiance really made the lunch enjoyable and relaxing. But let's talk about the food. I had the Baja Rice Bowl and it was than I expected from a grain bowl. Ingredients were fresh, perfect portions, and not overdone. The shrimp added great texture and was definitely needed. For a beverage, I went with the Bodega Boy. Even with mezcal being smoky in nature, the lime and mango really made it refreshing. For my dessert, the butterscotch pudding was a must have. It wasn't what I was expecting but what much better. It was decadent and if I could, I would have ordered probably 2 more. Just a heads up, there is a time limit for parking in the shopping center (can't remember if it's 1.5 hours or 2 hours), but was plenty of time to grab lunch and a beer next door.

I wish my dining experience and review was much more positive…read more Waverly offers a great, summery, aesthetic vibe with a lovely ocean breeze throughout the restaurant. This is the third time my girlfriend(s) and I have dined at the bar at Waverly in recent months. Each time we've arrived the female bartender (Karen) has been beyond unfriendly and seemingly couldn't smile to save her life. Initially, we just thought everyone has a bad day. Third time and same experience, not so much. I struggle to say this, however, she smiles and chats with men but with women, she has a completely different persona. Then as it's time for her tip, she musters up a smile. In addition, the food is always delicious as are their cocktails. At $19 and $22, one would think you would get more than three sips from your craft cocktail. It's completely filled with ice cubes and about an inch short on the pour, each and every time. I love Waverly, however, I feel they fall very short in these two categories. Enjoy your summer!
