It says they open at 10am. When we arrived they weren't open. Then a lady that was there told us they opened at 10:30 so we left and came back at 10:30. Came back and still closed. I asked and he seemed annoyed an told me 5 more minutes but then laughed about it. They didn't open until 10:50!! By then we went to Eric's in the pier and had already ordered. First place to dine while visiting Avalon for the first time. Cute little cantina style restaurant playing 50s rock and roll music. We dined in the outside patio. Our server, Israel, was very pleasant and prompt in getting our drinks and order. Didn't wait too long for orders to come out. We ordered a chicken enchilada plate, a two chicken soft taco plate, and a Coyote burger with fries. The food was delicious. Ended up coming here because it was the only place open, I was excited because the atmosphere seemed cool, and I felt in the mood for some Mexican food, but the first thing I noticed was the ridiculous prices, they charge $18 for their "coyote burrito" which is literally just a bean and cheese burrito, I ended up getting a coyote burger for $18 and it was literally worse than a school lunch burger, smallest paddy ever with absolutely no seasoning or taste, I also said yes when my server asked if id like chips and salsa when I sat down which ended up being $7 when I got my bill. I also paid 5.50 for a Minute Maid lemonade and finished it right when I got my food, I was hoping to have a drink with my meal but my server was never seen again until she came to bring me my bill, to finish it off she just threw everything onto one bill without asking a single time how we'd like to pay it, and it has 18% added auto gratuity. So basically only come here if you want to spend a stupid amount of money on horrible tasting food, with no service in sight. read more

Vegan review warning. I ordered the soyrizo and papas taco plate. Asked for no rice and black beans because the rice and refried beans are cooked with chicken stock and lard. Plate came with rice, refried beans, and everything covered in melted cheese. (Cheese was not listed on this menu item like it was for other taco plates) I sent it back, asking for it remade without cheese. They returned it to me on the same plate with the refried beans scraped off and maybe 90% of the melted cheese picked off the tacos by hand. Barf. read more

When I got the bill and it was $26 the waiter said, no that was for carnitas nachos not the carnitas plate. I walked him outside and showed him clear as day the entree I ordered and the price on the banner hanging from their patio. . Flat out refused to credit the price. Got the wet burrito, not as big or wet as it should be, but the taste was there. Got to this location at just the right time! They were just opening so there was no line. We sat outside on the street for breakfast/brunch. We were seated promptly. Staff was very busy but provided good service. Food was delicious. I ordered huevos rancheros and they were served as ordered. We walked along the mini-waterfront looking for a place to eat brunch. This place was about the only one with no line waiting to sit down and eat. We quickly got greeted and scored a table outside. They have clear dividers between tables outside for COVID. We ordered pretty quickly and waited for our food for no more than 15mins. The food itself was pretty good. The plate size was excellent. I was worried we would end up with an enormous amount of food. Instead, we were happily satisfied. The place is clean. Plenty of space for large groups, and it has a bar. Next time I'll try a mimosa; haha, I only had their coffee. I recommend this place for brunch when you arrive. No long waits, it won't break your wallet, and the food is pretty good. Oh. My. God. Wow. I'm speechless. Just absolutely disgusting. I can't even get into it. The food is SO BAD. I CANNOT EMPHASIZE THIS. The queso was burnt cottage cheese. My girlfriend got the quesadilla, and she probably shouldn't have. It was basically a tortilla pulled out of the bag, with burnt cottage cheese shoved in the middle. I got the shredded beef enchiladas and they were too dry to eat. OH. AND IT WAS $100. We asked for water, and they brought us 2 luke warm grocery store brand water bottles. Get this: $3 bucks each. If you want Mexican food, go somewhere else. This place nickel and dimes for everything. No tap water, only $2 bottles of water, chips and salsa are $5, soft drinks are $5 with one refill. We ordered a wet burrito and it came dry. But we were charged for a wet burrito. A $6 difference. The chicken was gummy and chewy on my tostada. Overall, this place sucks. I love this place! The staff were so nice and friendly! My friend and I stopped by here for a quick appetizer and margaritas while we wait for happy hour at another place. We ordered Chicken wings - $13 Fries - $5 Pitcher of margarita - $32 We were so surprised that the chicken wings came with 14 wings!!!! I feel like usually when you order wings they come with a 7 or so. They came out as dry/unseasoned wings and was given a hot sauce dip that kind of taste like Popeyes hot sauce! And we were given a plate fries, I'm not sure what the fries cut was but it was kind of like steak fries but a bit smaller/thinner? The margaritas were so good and so strong! Let me preface this by saying I am Mexican and I eat authentic Mexican food. I mention this because as I was perusing the menu, I heard a local raving about the pozole. Therefore, I ordered the pozole and taquitos with rice and beans. The latter was decent. The pozole on the other hand made me physically throw up. The chicken was clearly not properly cooked as it was still pink and the soup itself had absolutely no flavor. Flavor wise, I'm not sure if it's lack of resources or skills. Also, chips and salsa for $6? Service was good, our waiter was understanding when we asked to remove an item from our order. My two girls and I were seated in the corner and left there for about 10 minutes until a waiter finally came over to take our order. It had no sour cream or guacamole. It was bland and had absolutely no flavor. After reviewing the menu again I realized the super tostada for $6 more came with sour cream and guacamole and rice. I thought sour cream on a tostada was a basic thing, not at Coyote Joes. The margarita looked good but once I began to drink it I realized there was very little tequila in it. My daughter was not happy with her burrito. She said the asada had no flavor and was fatty. By the way this turned out to be a $25 burrito!! It was $18 on the menu but they charged us an additional $3 for fries and $4 for the carne asada. WTF!! I think everyone knows that a California burrito comes with fries and steak!! My other daughter was happy with her enchilada but the beans she ordered were the worst I ever tasted. So, I ended up paying $100.30 minus the $6 chips and salsa, which I thought were complimentary like most Mexican restaurants. I guess that's how they made it up to us. Vegans beware!!! I ordered the Soyrizo Burrito for pickup and asked on the phone if it was vegan. I was told yes, it is vegan. My girlfriend ordered the Coyote Quesadilla. Neither of us got the food we had ordered in the way the menu (or the host) described. The burrito was loaded with cheese (I unfortunately realized this too late and ate most of it. I am vegan and this is disgusting to me -- clearly not what I ordered) and was missing beans, while the quesadilla was missing peppers, onions and other veggies. I get food costs will be higher due to the location, (94 bucks for 3 entres and a plate of nachos) but the quality and taste was not good for what we paid. Using Denny's as a benchmark, Denny's is better. I had their burger and it had no spices to give it flavor. The patty was too uniform, you could tell it was bought frozen. It had no taste. This place needs at least 4 stars not sure the reason behind only 3.5 stars. There are things that are negative for sure... 1. Waiting time after you order your appetizers- takes 25 -30mins just to get ur order. I overheard they only have 1 cook and 2 waiters etc...it looked like they had staff shortage. 2. Waiters don't check in often- they take the order and disappear in a a second, they serve your food and before you ask them something, they take off very fast. I am not sure about the reason. 3. Had fish AL Diablo from the sea option- when asked what fish is the one they served. The waitress went, asked the cook,came back and said " it's something Alaskan fish..but what Alaskan fish no idea...." So surprisingly, it looked like just serve the food that's it... Some positive things - Food is very good, they will accommodate to your needs. It was very delicious. Yummy gummy shot was good. Chicken Enchiladas and shrimp taco was very good. Ate here while in Avalon a couple of weeks ago with my grandson. Food was great & the staff was friendly. We ate out on the patio because of well ... you know .... Pandemic Regs UGH but I'll want to go back again when the wait isnt so long and we can get to eat inside as well. I had shrimp and my grandson had a chicken quesadilla. We were both happy. They had a good variety for a bar & grill Mexican style place. Only complaint was too many french fries LoL Never could eat that many, but they were good. read more

**NOT vegetarian friendly despite advertising as such We chose this place over any other restaurant on Catalina specifically because of its vegetarian options. Turns out their rice now has chicken stock in it, their refried beans have lard and their potato tacos are cooked in lard fat. Anyone looking at that vegetarian section beware. I ended up having a $20 plate with lettuce, black beans, tomato and avocado. This year for my birthday, my boyfriend surprised me with a trip to Catalina. Unfortunately, with the whole COVID situation we were extremely limited on activities and places to eat. After walking around, we decided to give this place a shot. The restaurant itself is relatively small so I highly suggest you request to eat outside otherwise it gets easily crowded. We were seated almost immediately; however, it took a our waitress a while to get to our drink order and when she finally came back we were ordered our food as well. I ordered the fish and chips with a frozen strawberry margarita and ask for chips and salsa for an appetizer. My boyfriend ordered himself the carne sada tacos with rice and beans with a beer. We received our food before we even received the chips and salsa appetizer, so I had to request for it to be cancelled. My boyfriend was pretty bummed when he got his tacos because it had an abundance of onion on it, which was failed to be mentioned on the menu or by the waitress but we let it be because well, its tacos that should of been a bit expected. My margarita tasted a bit weak, but the fish and chips were delicious. The carne sada tacos were decent and the beans were good, but the rice on the other hand was hardly touched for its lack of flavor. We're San Diego natives, so maybe we have a high expectation? Besides the alright food, I gave this place a two star because I believe is definitely overpriced for its quality of food and service. Our waitress would breeze by us and only stopped when I called for her because I was missing the ranch I asked for when I originally placed my order. I think the final ding in the stars had to be when she started yelling at her daughter or niece for not wearing mask on at the front patio where we were sitting (It's understandable that she should be wearing a mask, but be professional/subtle in the work environment) and lastly, when I saw a group of about four people looking at the menu in the front she bluntly told them there was no seating available.
