Nice restaurant for a casual meal... Prone to getting seasick, we arrived in Avalon with empty bellies and were quickly eager for sustenance. After checking out a few other restaurants, Coyote Joe's (CJ) seemed the best fit for vegetarians/ vegans. So... of course, this was our obvious choice. Located about .75 miles from the Catalina Express loading/ unloading area, this restaurant was convenient. Indoor and outdoor seating was readily available. We sat outside on the patio with others comfortably close. The menu contained a wide variety of Mexican food options and even had a "GARDEN, BEYOND MEAT, SOYRIZO CHOICES" section. We opted for two Soyrizo Avocado Burritos with a special request of lasagna sauce on top. Our food was brought out in a timely manner and was in good portion. I was content with the taste, texture and flavors. I left stuffed! CJ was a perfect pitstop for us to fuel up and begin our 10 mile walk exploring the island. read more

After we ordered our food, it took 40 minutes for our food to Come out. The rice was under cooked and hard. The beans were burnt tasting. The food was very bland. We ordered the enchilada plate, potato taco plate, 3 item plate with enchilada Chile rellano and flauta, and a bowl of tortilla soup. The potato tacos had 0 seasoning and were nasty. Our waitress never came back and we tried several times to flag her down for salsa. It took about 15 minutes to get her attention. The chicken in the flauta was not seasoned. We think this place deserves better reviews. We came 2X for the daily specials, as they are pretty good deals, most are $15 for the item with 2 sides. The chicken enchiladas were pretty good - 2 pieces of enchiladas with shredded white meat, with pretty tasty rice & beans topped with melted cheese. The fish taco special comes with 2 tacos & rice & beans (same sides as the enchiladas). Each fish taco consist of whole seasoned breaded crispy fish, generous lettuce & diced tomatoes in soft corn tortillas. We like these better than the ones we got from just across the street. We liked the generous portions, enough to feed our 2 hungry teenagers. The service was average. Coyote Joe's is a cute enough spot and the staff seemed very nice. unfortunately, the food was incredibly lacking in flavor. Bland is not a term one would usually associate with Mexican or Mexican-American cuisine. Unfortunately it is the right word to describe what I ate here. I decided to order one "traditional" item and one Mex-American. For the former I chose the albondigas soup. I will give it this: for the smaller "cup" size, this was a lot of soup. And it probably could have been a meal in and of itself if I was willing to eat all of it. Unfortunately, I was not. The meatballs were entirely flavorless. Just hot balls of chewy meat. in order to give it any flavor I had to add a huge amount of salt. And after that, I still only consumed the broth. The rest of the soup was just too bland to choke down. I honestly felt bad about how much I left, since the waiter was very nice (and, of course, not responsible for the food) and hid the bowl under a plate. I ordered the "Gnarly Nachos" for the Mex-American dish. From the description I was expecting something a bit more...well...anything. I didn't order a meat, so It was just a pile of chips with cheese, and refried beans on it. And, on a separate small plate, a dollop of guacamole and sour cream. No pico de gallo or anything else. The waiter asked if I wanted "spicy sauce" and brought me a bowl of red salsa. I also asked for some pico and he brought me the tiniest cup full of it. The red salsa was alright when I finished shaking salt in it for what seemed like five minutes. It had no heat, but at least the salt gave it flavor. It's hard to mess up melted cheese, but the chips were just OK. And, to be perfectly honest, I've had better at Baja Fresh. Hell, I've had better at Taco Bell. The chips were very thick and very oily. They were at least crunchy, but getting even a little flavor out of them took a LOT of salt. And there was so little of the condiments that normally are layered on top of nachos. I asked for a second bowl of the salsa to help me actually eat enough to feel like I had actually had a full meal. I don't know if it was because the staff were very kind and friendly, but I feel terrible about giving this place a bad review. I hope that this night was just an "off" night. There was a lack of customer service especially with engaging with us during our time, the other night while were were there and we had received our food my friend had notified me on how for my ceviche order the server had dropped the cracker on the floor from the plate, picked it right back up and put it back on the plate. I was extremely upset by it but however I let it be due to wanting to enjoy our time on the island rather than being upset and having to confront people to have my order remade and make a scene. They had a Monday through Friday special and we initially were going for taco Tuesday but got the Gnarly Nachos which was really good and we just shared those and had some drinks. Our waitress was really nice and sat us at our table out in the patio quickly and even turned on the heater for us. The food, however, was not at its best. The meat in the Albondigas soup was kind of rare and the fajitas was not accompanied with the traditional Guacamole and Sour Cream. It tasted like hand sanitizer. My partners tasted fine though so I was really confused. My partner confirmed mine was definitely not good. I didn't continue drinking because I was worried it had been tampered with. The chips and salsa were also not good. I am from Texas and know what good chips and salsa is. The chips had no salt and the salsa was bland. Don't waste your $6 on it. It's also a small portion and you don't get free refills. Very disappointing. For my meal I ordered the tamales. The wrap on the tamales was weird and even after taking it off, I felt like I was eating plastic. The red sauce they put on the side also tasted like hand sanitizer. The rice on the side was good. This bar isn't very big. We walked in and sat at the bar. The bartender was friendly. The three of us ordered a drink and some chips with guacamole. The drinks were decent, kind of strong side honestly. The chips and guacamole was pretty bland and basic. But we were starving so we ate most of it. The bar counter was sticky, so that was unpleasant when we leaned over and put our elbows down. Overall it was so-so. I'm sure we might have gone back if we had stayed on the island longer. But I do wonder if there are better bars on the island. The location of Coyote Joe's is nice because it is in the central hub where everything is at, so you don't have to wander too far to find it. Our waiter was nice, not super attentive but with how busy they were and the fact that he was the only one out running the floor, I get it.
