Located in the old bowling alley, you can see some of Bakersfield's history when you dine here. The service was quick and friendly, the food came out shortly after ordering! and the ambiance of the place is quite relaxing and feels like a classic diner with a bit of Baki's history around you! I know this place is considered a staple, but I personally think it's overhyped. The decor and style of this particular location is very dated. The building itself is old too. The bowling alley section has been walled off, and though they kept the rear entrance, it's like a liminal space... We came in for the fish and chips and I didn't care much for them. Fish was very salty and run of the mill fries. The coleslaw and hot biscuit that came with the order were both really good, though. 1/24/2025: After taking care of some business in the Kern River Valley, hubby decided to drive home through Bakersfield specifically to stop at Mossman's for dinner! The almost-birthday boy wanted fish & chips.. and where else would you go to satisfy that craving? This old school diner outlived the attached bowling alley, and that really says something! Super clean, simple decor and they seem to know everyone's name. What a joy to watch them interacting with all of their regulars! Service was excellent as always, our server was even sweet enough to bring a sample of their house "budget" salad that's often a side to their famous golden fish chunks.. and I just might have to order that on our next visit! They were very busy in the dining room, at the old fashioned counter; in the private party room as well as with drive-up take-out orders. Yes - if you phone in your order and drive up to the front door, they will run your order out to you like a car hop service! Make sure you tip these hard working folks well when they hand you your bag of deliciousness! Once again we enjoyed our meal but weren't able to have dessert afterwards because the portions are just SO generous. They have fresh made cobblers and Texas sheet cakes for dessert for those who do have room. I did order a dozen of those excellent rolls to take home and enjoy. Oh, heavenly carbs! I bought fish and chips and the fish was so tough could not bite through. I called them 20 minutes after picking up order when I ate the first bite and was told cuz I ate it too late and they didn't want to replace the order or refund me. the staff was very rude about it . Been going there for years always called in for pick up and never had a problem. Even when we got it for catering at work we didn't eat it right away and it was never a problem. Once again we ordered the fish and chips and bacon burger and it was so good! But also ordered their Delicious strawberry cobbler and their sheet bread! Read the quaint story on the menu if you like but do not buy into the bullshit about freshness and all that. I was here mid day on the weekend and ordered the fish n chips with a salad. The food comes with a roll, this one was dry around the edges, had not been fresh for a while. Same with the salad, it was a sad excuse of a bag salad, probably from Smart n Final from the week before. There were places on the edges of the lettuce that were turning pink. It consisted of cheap ass stale lettuce and some grated carrot, that is it. The fish was OK as were the fries, that is the reason this review is not one star. Service was OK, but honestly who cares if the food is not fresh? It will be a long time before I return to this spot. read more

At first glance, this is an older establishment that has the small town ambiance feeling, and if you want to smell like the restaurant this is the place to go. The service was great and welcoming from all the workers which was nice. As for the food, I got the fish n chips and chicken tenders which came with fries but also a bread roll as a starter! The portion was pretty decent with good fries and good chicken tenders, but the fish n chips fell short for me :(. I was expecting a nice crispy crunch from the batter but it was chewy and did not deliver. I'm not sayin they were undercooked but I feel like I could've had a better bite. It's been a Bakersfield staple since 1959 and has a great reputation for its fish and chips and that reputation is well deserved. They have a classic diner menu with prices that aren't going to rob your pocket book. No knife. No salt. No pepper. Not necessary. I had the sliced TRI Tip, mashed potatoes with gravy and peas with carrots. But the meal started with clam chowder, crackers, dinner roll and butter. Best clam chowder I have had in years. With butter on the roll, dipping it into the soup was great. I mixed the mashed potatoes with the peas and carrots thinking the vegetable would be mushy. It was not. The peas still had that crisp pop when I bit into them and the carrots were firm. The mashed potatoes with gravy was the bomb and I kept going back and forth between the taters and TRI Tip. I do have to say the meat was a little more done than I prefer, but it did not take away from the flavor or tenderness. All in all a great meal. My server was a sweetheart, her name is Becky. She continually checked to make sure everything was going good. All of the food and great service was only $19.14. Great prices to boot. read more

This place reminds me of Lorene's Downtown Bland food JUST AWFULLY BLAND. No flavor in country fried steak. Mashed potatoes where good and so was gravy but their white gravy really sucked. It was just white sauce without flavor. Potato soup wasn't bad but only because it got most of its flavor from the excessive amount of bacon they put in it. Chicken fried sandwich was just a fried piece of chicken breast with no salt or pepper and definitely no flavor. Fruit was okay with some tajin. The picke was dull. The club sandwich was okay but a lil too much mayo. Potato salad was a pickle flavor. Fish n chips was way too salty and drenched in oil and Tarter sauce was Bland. I can't say I'm mad at the cook beans he's just doing his job, it's the people who have instructed him to cook such things in that way that are getting this review. read more

Welp, I think I love this little place. My friends that live here have been talking about this place for years and I keep dismissing it because it used to be a Bowling Alley Diner. Miranda was our server and she took care of us. I'll say this, we're awful guests because we're the type to ask for extra everything. We're a handful. Miranda was unfazed and amazing. She gave us great suggestions too. Who orders Fish at a Bowling Alley? I guess we do. Fish is so damn good. It's Deep Fried, crunchy, and delicious. I especially loved the Pancakes. Gosh, those were insanely good. All of her suggestions were spot on. Chicken Strips were very different and had that homemade taste. Basically, they did not taste like chicken tenders, they tasted like really good fried chicken. Anyway, I'll definitely be back. It has that old school diner feel. I am not understanding the difficulty in preparing the Chicken Strips dinner as stated on their menu. It was to have the gravy underneath and the mashed potatoes were to have white gravy on them as well. This is the third time I have ordered this and it was delivered incorrectly. Upon calling the restaurant to let them know this and asking for Jordan, the manager, the employee that answered the phone became defensive, advised me that Jordan was busy and would be off work the next two days. It is one thing to get my order continously wrong, but to take an attitude with me is something that as a customer, I will not tolerate.
