If you are close to Diamond Head, stop off into this little store. If you are looking for Li Hing mui, strawberries, peach, etc, this is a place to hit. The owner is really nice and gave us samples when we asked. There are not many of these places around and I wish there were. I just love the sweet and sour stuff. Best Ling Hing Icee on the Island!! I'm so glad my homie Keiko-san showed me this place. Most places just add powder to the Icee but here you get the juice straight from the glass jar!! This is the only place I know that does this. Another thing to try while you are there is the wet ling hing kaki mochi. Its prepped the same way with juice straight from the glass jar! My partner in crime and I noticed numerous individuals walking in and out of the tiny little store. We decided to take a look in and were instantly whisked back to our childhood. I found myself instantly wanting an Icee float... but what did I see a sign for? Li Hing Mui Icee Float?! Sold! I expected it to be made with li hing mui powder. Oh no! My mouth waters just thinking about the flavors. I think anyone who's grown up in Hawaii has their own childhood crack seed experience. Whether it's the manapua man's white truck (seriously Mom, how could you allow me to eat food from that thing?!), the Chinatown stores filled with giant glass jars of candies or the neighborhood shop which you rode your bike to after finding money in your parent's ashtray (that was totally me), we've all got our special memory. This is what the Crack Seed Store represents for so many locals. After reading that one Yelper had been visiting the owner Mr. Young for 18 years, I just had to come here! With the commercial rents going up, up, up and the cost of goods going up, up, up, all these special little places are slowly disappearing one by one. While in Kaimuki running errands, my husband and I decided to pop in for our very first visit with our five-year old. Just like her Mama, she loves li hing mui and Tomoe Ame rice candies, and was overjoyed at the sight of all the different jars when we walked in the door. The Crack Seed Store is exactly what an old school crack seed shop should be. It's small, old, filled to the brim with giant glass jars full of candies and things I cannot pronounce, and the best part is Mr. Young was there to help us with our treats. I asked him to make me the wet li hing mui arare which I'd read about so many times on Yelp, and he even put the li hing juice in a separate bag so that I could pour it on my arare when I was ready to eat it. Always came here for years! Loved chatting with the last owner who was very nice and loved talking. Getting to know your customers should be number 1 on your books. Today I went there to get seeds for the first time since ownership changed. The couple there who told me they were the new owners had NO CUSTOMER SERVICE at all! I walked in there, no hello! No how are you! How can I help you! I just walked in waited for one of them to say something. I then just asked if they had dried cherries, ordered what I wanted paid and looked at both of them with no thank you! No smile! The male took my money have me my change said nothing turned to her & said something then I left!! With a small company as they have & during this pandemic you would think they would present themselves as AT LEAST BEING GRATEFUL I walked in there purchasing their products. The Best!! So my husband has been going here Since he was a kid, literally. He introduced me to it 18 years ago on my first trip to Hawaii and I was hooked. Mr. Young owned the place then, and the stuff is classic. And the place is classic. Mr. Young retired a couple years ago, glad for him, sad for his loyal customers. Now Mei Fang and her family took over seamlessly. They have the same classics, and also introduced some new flavors (the li hing apple slices, yum yum.) Also they have a website and Hawaii ex pats on the mainland can order and have shipped. I ship back to the mainland frequently and it is seamless. And my friends there live me for it haha. This place is definitely a hidden gem! While M & I were driving through Koko Head, I wanted to get some snacks so we drove through and stopped by the Crack Seed Store. This place is TINY. I mean, I don't think it'll be a good idea to have any more than 10 people in this cute little store. The moment I walked in, I was in heaven. An institution! One of the original crack seed stores of a soon to be bygone era. Mr. Young, the owner, says he has been in business about 35 years. That's a lot of crack seed. I first discovered business when I went to the Bikram yoga studio 10 years ago that was then upstairs near the store to get water and change. I remember Mr. Young was so nice even when I was dripping with sweat and stinky. What is Mr. Young's favorite? I can never make up my mind in here, so I get the sweet seedless cherry, wet li hing mui w/ mochi crunch, rock salt plum, honey li hing mui, sweet li hing mui, mango strips, lemon balls, olive cake, wet lemon peel, kam cho football seeds, li hing mui sour apples and li hing mui sour watermelon. Maybe I don't get all that but I get most of it. They sell it 1/4 lb, 1/2 lb, 3/4 lb , 1 pound. I bring 10 bucks, sometimes 20 and I tell Mr. Young, I want a dollar of this, 2 dollars of that and so forth till I add up to my 10 or 20 bucks, ICEE included of course. I have a confession. I hate mangoes with the burning hot passion of a thousand suns. I was actually on the way to Calico Cat and stopped in on a whim. I like it. The owner gentleman was very friendly and helpful. When I asked him to recommend a product, he asked why I had already chosen Lemon and Orange peels. I shuddered and boldly proclaimed my mango hate. Featured last year in Hawaiian Airlines' magazine (I was so excited when I saw the article), the Crack Seed Store has supplied kids with afterschool, local snacks for at least 20 years. I love to visit and drool over the glass jars filled with salty-sweet delights! One can also get an Icee. The owner is always really nice, smiling while scooping out your crack-substitute snack for the day. He gives you the option to have the plastic bag of your goodies sealed or unsealed for immediate consumption. Go visit this hole-in-the-wall. If you are from Hawaii you will looove this place. I think I love this place due to the fact it hasn't changed! I've only known about this place later in life, but it reminds me places that are no longer here. My bf grew up around this area, and he said it has been the same guy working here forever. The old man is so nice, and makes jokes. Just how you would remember your neighborhood crack seed store. This place should be a landmark. My bf introduced me to couple items that I think are special to this crack seed store. 1. Would be "Kaki Mochi with Sauce", it's regular kaki mochi/ mochi crunch/ arare/ rice crackers in a wet Li Hing Mui sauce. The key to this item is eat it face before your kaki mochi becomes soggy! 2. Their Li Hing Icee. It may sound like something you've had before, but it's not just powder. He scoops some Wet Li Hing Mui sauce with 1 Li Hing Mui into you icee. He also layers it in the middle, so the flavor isn't just on the top. He knows the best method. It gives it a different taste, and my mouth is literally watering as I am typing this! I hope this place remains in that location forever! I hope to take my kids here and have them meet the nice old man. The store is tiny, but has all the necessary Li Hing and other crack seed items you might be needing. The taste and quality of his items I think are better than other places, and prices are in range. I remember running to the store down the street to buy our favorite li-hing seeds and candies, but now there's commercial grocery stores and specialty stores. The Crack Seed Store in Kaimuki is one of the last standing old kind seed stores that have one of the best tasting seeds on the island. I especially love the honey lemon peel....and the li-hing dried strawberries....and the rock salt plum....and the dried cherries....and the sweet li-hingmui....and the prune mui....and the licorice seed...and the...well you get the idea. Li Hing ICEE!! This is a small establishment located on the corner of Waialae and Koko Head Ave. Even though they are small, they have a lot of items packed full of flavor! It's easy to get to by bus or if you drive, they have lots of parking options. You can park on the street by meter, inside the parking lot by meters or in the loading zone areas if you have a loading zone vehicle. We're so lucky that they have the perfect solution for this hot Summer weather! Their Li Hing ICEE's!! It's the perfect mixture of sweet and sour. You can get it without the Li Hing but I love it! This place reminds me of the crack seed store I use to go to growing up on Maui! All the seeds are in glass jars and the owner still uses on old fashioned cash register! Yet another thing I LOVE... ICEES! And for about the past 5 years or so I have been coming here to get them!!! They always have about 4 different flavors to choose from (better than most places with only 2) and its not just the usual coke or strawberry either! Theyve had Pepsi, Melon, Vanilla, and a long time ago MY VERY FAVORITE: LEMONADE! I keep going back and they havent had it for a while and i really wish they would bring it back!!! They make icee floats (which are really good!) with those little vanilla ice cream cups and then the icee of your choice covering it. But my favorite is the li hing mui icee! Mixing half vanilla and half melon... The store owner puts in a piece of wet li hing mui and some li hing "juice" HITS THE SPOT! I've been coming to this store for ages and I cannot get over how amazing this place is. Their strawberry li hing icee makes my mouth water every time! Whenever I'm in Kaimuki I always get a snack and find myself choosing between Jewel and Juice or the Crack Seed Store believe me the decision is NOT easy because both are so delicious. But the Crack Seed Store settles my salty craving. I am able to get all the old school li hing mui seeds, candies, and even dried mango here. Just typing about it makes my mouth fill with saliva. I remember going to the local crack seed place as a kid on Maui, so I was stoked to find out there was one close to my house. Wet lemon, dried lemon, sweet-sour cherry, pickled mango--this place has it all going on within a space the size of a closet! Like the others have said, get the strawberry Icee with the li hing juice inside! Nothing screams childhood to me than the artificial sweetness of a strawberry Icee and the sweet-sour li hing essence!
