We were on our way to In-N-Out, but I saw Cracker Barrel and wanted to try that place. There is just no way this place is this bad, and people are still going there? Hostess training another hostess, not knowing where she was going. You know you are waiting too long to be seated when you grab the menu to start making up for lost time. Everybody was just lost. Dishes and crap on every other table as employees just walked on by. Look liked the busboy (if he was one) was hanging out with the two hostesses. Back in my day, if you have time to lean, you have time to clean. I ordered the campfire beef meal. I mean, what was that? Tasteless, soggy old people food that I was able to squish a carrot between my tongue and palate. I did not have to chew any of it. They had to have wrapped this in foil this morning and kept it in a steamer. I have never tasted moosh carrots, onions, or tomatoes in one meal. Did they send it through the dishwasher or something? I have never had to season meat before, as it is an insult to the cook, but there was not enough salt/pepper on the table to put flavor into this meal. A-1 would have been my go-to, but it was not on the table. The server was nice enough, but she works there 7 days a week, takes the bus 2-3 hours each way, and she is sitting in a chair talking to us. Anyways, she asked me how the meal was, and I told her it was embarrassing. I did not have to chew anything except the corn on the cob; it was all mushy. How long do onions and carrots have to steam for the food to be that mushy? I had better food in a field in Afghanistan out of a steamer on a plastic tray. This was not even prison food quality. She gets the manager, manager, no name tag, not work clothing, just a blue blouse and black pants with a radio hanging off her hip. She walked up and said nothing, no introduction, nothing. I asked her if she was a manager or something, and she said, "Yes." I told her about the food, and she said basically I was lying because they make those meals to order fresh. No more than an hour before serving, then I said, Funny, they make it fresh, and we got the meal in 15 minutes, and it's mush. Then she said they pre-cook them about an hour in advance of somebody ordering it. Well, how do they know some buddy is going to order it for them to time travel an hour backwards to make the meal, because they are psychic. At least my server told me the truth. They make them well in advance and place them in a pan of water to heat them up. That makes sense because we are at 5 pm, and the meal tasted like 9 am sitting in a steamer all day. The manager gave me a stupid grin and had nothing to say, no apology or nothing. I said, Hey, I ate it, I'll pay for it. She turned and walked away with no comments. We got the bill, and the meal was on the check. While we were waiting, I signed up for the club rewards required if you wanted a military discount. As I was walking out, I got an email from CB saying I could order a free Share appetizer. LOL! I was tempted to go in for the pickled chips to go, but I was more concerned about being sick later. The server was tipped properly. I have never seen a server sitting in a chair talking to customers about her life while plates, dishes, and cups were stacking up on tables for customers to look at. There was a grey hair in my Double Chocolate Fudge Coca-Cola® Cake I'm so grossed out. I wasted money on food thats unsafe to eat. So disgusting someone's grey hair was in my food. I am so glad I noticed before I ate it so I didn't have a random Cracker Barrel employee hair in my mouth. I am so grossed out and disgusted that they did this to my food. I don't recommend ordering from here unless you like someone's grey hair topping your food. So grossed out and nauseous from this whole experience. Yuck! Never ordering from here again! Nasty! Great breakfast and fun atmosphere. Food portions were small and would have liked to have had normal adult portions. The biscuits and gravy were good and portioned well. The ham was five inches in length with a bone in the middle. One scrambled egg and a few small sausages. The hash brown casserole serving was four tablespoons. Disappointing. This is why the 3 stars. I was just online reading the daily news and they mentioned this restaurant. I had put it out of my head after my last visit, but after reading they are going downhill after their "remodeling" and "reformat", I decided to add my two cents. I cannot even believe that I gave this restaurant another shot, but I did. The joke is on me here. I ordered the New York Strip Steak supper with steak fries and frief okra as my sides. I requested takeout for pick-up. I also had requested one biscuit and one cornbread for the bread option that is included. You are supposedly allowed up to ten condiments for free which I requested and I only received six. I am including a copy of my carryout receipt so you can see for yourself. First of all, the New York Strip Steak is supposed to be 10 oz. Sad to say but it was one little skinny mini with a cow that must have been suffering from vitiligo given all the different light colored spots all over it. It was very dry. Very tough. Full of fat about ready to break my teeth non chewable nonsense that even a knife couldn't cut! Ugh, ugh. The steak fries were okay but certainly nothing to write to home about. The fried okra was included in the same container as the steak but it didn't matter anyways. Dry and bland; hence why I really could have used all TEN free condiments allowed and not just a measley six. I requested one biscuit and one cornbread. I received two very stale, dry, flaky biscuits that I couldn't even put butter on without the whole entire biscuit breaking apart in my hand and all over the counter to the floor. Thanks. On top of having to clean and vacuum I attempted to refire my steak that had absolutely NO garlic or butter as promised, and on top of that it was once again ALL pink meat on a well done steak. Ugh ugh. Save your money folks. Go to Black Bear Diner or even Denny's on Riverdale if you're looking for proper done steak that isn't yesterday's or last weeks news! I ordered the chicken tenders, fries, and seasoned rice. My wife ordered the country fried steak with mashed potatoes and gravy. The food was excellent! The atmosphere was awesome with copies of old advertisements and such on the walls. They were quite busy and that was reflected in the service. We asked for straws and were told OK, but the straws never arrived. It was also very challenging to get a soda refill. I will say that, overall, it was a great experience. read more

We spent $40 on food from cracker barrel and you can tell that the food is old. The potatoes would dry and lumpy the gravy taste it like it came out of jar and the fish was way undercooked. The green beans were overcooked to the point to where you need me to have to choose all you had to do is swallow them and the biscuits taste it like they were from breakfast which were crusty and cold over all the food terrible. I visited with a friend on a busy Friday afternoon. Despite the crowd, we were seated quickly and decided to order a couple of appetizers to share--chicken strips, fries, and beignets. So done trying to order take out or door dash. EVERY SINGLE TIME our order is messed up and nobody does anything to fix it. This time we were missing an entire meal and all the receipt said was "we were out." No replacement or anything just don't bring any food and then our other meal was missing sides. I'm being generous with four stars, but this visit would have been five had my New York Strip Steak been cooked well done like I requested; instead of medium rare. I ordered the New York Strip Steak supper which comes in at 10 oz, (the steak itself is a bit more narrow than a regular New York Steak like you get at other establishments), two biscuits (or cornbread), and two sides of your choice per their menu options. I requested my steak be well done and sadly it was on the outside, but certainly not on the inside. All pink and raw meat. Definitely cooked like a medium rare. The steak itself had excellent seasoning with a very rich garlic taste. Basically I had to refire my steak in the stove to get all the pink meat out. When you pay for food, plus tips, etc it is supposed to be an indulgence so you don't have to cook! The two sides that I ordered were the steak fries and macaroni and cheese. The steak fries were crispy, delicious, and seasoned well. The macaroni and cheese was also excellent. I requested two biscuits as my bread and they both were slightly burnt and different sizes. Needless to say, after a lot of butter, they were eaten! I did request extra condiments and utensils and the restaurant did oblige with that. Would love to give this place another visit and hope the chef learns how to cook a proper well done steak in the interim. read more

The food @ Cracker Barrel was very good! But I'am probably a very particular person who really likes older fashioned restaurants. Growing up in Iowa a person really gets accustomed to family type restaurants, good food, service that is very good all the time! When we were at Cracker Barrel in Layton, the time was after normal dining hours. My better half ordered a breakfast meal. Considering that the restaurant's breakfast menu was very full of different items and the time it was, she was very happy with the choice that she made. She said that it was a very nice meal and she would definitely be back when it was closer to the regular meal times so she could enjoy the various options that they offer at breakfast, lunch, and the dinner hour! I personally had trouble deciding what I was going to have for my dinner! Their menu has so many options to choose from! I really love breakfast anytime of the day, but I saw an item on the menu that you really do not see here in Utah very often! It was fried catfish, and with me being from Iowa and the Mississippi River in our backyard, you caught and fried a lot of catfish!! Guess what happened to me when I saw that Cracker Barrel Old Country restaurant had catfish on the menu, there was no second thought about what I was ordering!!! And when it came to the table I was not disappointed! The fish was great in my opinion. I earlier stated that their menu was one that offered a large selection of choices. I believe that a person can find a selection of different types of food that they would enjoy eating so when they left, they would want to tell their friends about! Now on to the restaurant's ambience, when you enter the restaurant and before you get to the place for dinner you walk into a area that the best way to describe it is you just stepped back in time!! Like the name says OLD COUNTRY, you basically have entered into an old general store! The place has so many things that can remind people of earlier times, a fantastic arrangement of candy that you just do not see anymore. Some toys for all ages, different types of food that one can buy to take home, if you want to after having your primary purpose for coming there in the first place! I really cannot say enough about Cracker Barrel's Old Country Restaurant, one must experience for themselves! Good: great welcome ladies and cash register lady-very friendly and warm. Food was great: salad fresh and well made, steak cooked to perfection and the restuffed potato-yum! Bad: we go out to eat very seldom. My husband has had a heart transplant so we are careful to not eat out regularly because of his compromised immune system. This was a treat to us. Our waitress did what she was supposed to do, took order, brought food, then check. Her attitude said "you are an inconvenience to me". We always split a dinner because we just can't eat it all if we dont. Maybe that was why she never smiled? I gave her a 20% tip anyway because I thought maybe she was having a bad day. Horrible experience. The server, Hanna was the worst. She took our order and then ignored us. Plopped our food down. I asked for butter and ketchup. She scoffed and we never got it. My sister's eggs were not over easy. They were broken and hard. Her piece of ham was literally 2x2 and hard as can be. The supposed fully loaded tater tots were hard, so vet cooked and dry. I might be clouded by memories of coming to Cracker Barrel as a kid with my grandparents but it's always a delight to stop in and have a slow meal. Even on busier days it's never more than 15 minutes to get a table where Salt Lake brunch places often have you waiting an hour or more. It's southern comfort food and nothing particularly creative but it's always done well. They sadly pride themselves on lard and bacon. I wish they would toss an olive branch to mark vegetarian items. I always end up ordering a combination of sides via the "Country Vegetable Plate" and am never disappointed. The price is right, it's one of the few places you can still go out to eat and spend less than $30 for 2, complete with side of biscuits and bottomless coffee. This last visit they were weirdly seating everyone in the back of the restaurant rather than allowing seating near the windows which was entirely empty. When we asked for a seat by the window, we were told there was no server there. Why would a restaurant choose to leave their best seats vacant? read more

My daughter took me here for my birthday. Apparently you have changed the menu. She couldn't see the chicken pot pie on the menu and your sides no longer have the sweet potato. She order the New York Strip Steak it had way to much spices on it and to much salt. I ordered the Smoky Southern Grilled Chicken. My chicken was burnt and looked nothing like what is pictured in the menu or on line. Seeing how had never ordered it before I thought it was supposed to be that way. Oh my god, I really hate writing bad reviews but I have no choice on this one. My wife took me out to lunch and was excited to have some good home cooked goodness. When we gave our name to be called they said 10 to 15 minute wait, well that a good chunk of my lunch break but I know why now. They want you to wander through their gift shop filled with brick-a-bracs and nick-nacks and spend money on that., they got in in in 5 minutes. I ordered the Fried Haddock, fries and turnip greens, includes 2 biscuits or cornbread muffins, sound good so far? Here is where it gets bad, the fish was the consistency of dried out jerky, the greens tasted like toilet water, even salt did not help, the fries were okay, biscut and bread was okay but not nearly enough butter. I returned the fish and opted for what the sever suggested was the chicken fried steak, wholly crap! it was over cooked and dry the gravy has soooo much liqued smoke flavor I tasted it for days afterwords, I hate smokey gravy it should be sausage flavored. My wife had mac & cheese and was just okay. The reason for the two stars was the waitress, she was friendly and helpful and I think she knows that they are serving subpar food. We checked in at 10:30 a.m. and was told to be patient and we should be seated within 45 minutes. At 11:30 we checked back for an update and was told they were working on it. At 11:45 I asked a shift Manager about the status of our seating, where she then said "I am sorry but we cannot accommodate your party size". "WHAT" I could not and still don't understand why this was not told to us when we first checked in, instead of one hour and twenty minutes later. Yes I was and am very upset with their lack of respect for our party and the value of our time. I called a nearby competitor (Applebees), and explained what took place at the Cracker Barrel, they immediately apologized for Cracker Barrels action and said all the restaurants in this general area are not like that and to come to their location where they would sit and serve us immediately. the ambiance is wonderful. there is a crackling fireplace next to the barrels and it is so christmassy in here. the temperature is wonderful despite the fireplace. the decor is exceptionally exquisite. it's awesome. we loved playing the cracker barrel game and it kept our five kids entertained while we waited for the food. we appreciated the old timey photos of old people who may or may not have existed. however our waitress was 3/5 stars as evidenced by her apron. the food was wonderful and perfect for our intended big back activities. i got the pot roast, mashed potatoes, green beans and mac and cheese and it made me rethink ever cooking my own thanksgiving. perhaps next year we will cater cracker barrel from the layton location. read more

This might sound weird but the best two meals I had in Layton UT was at Crackle Barrel. I ordered on line and the food was ready exactly when the said it would be. I picked it up and took it back to my hotel which was just behind Crackle Barrel. The people at the restaurant were nice and polite. I hate how there is a small store before being seated down because I always end up buying something a cute item, such as owl blankets, or owl tea mugs. The syrups are served warm and in a cute small bottle. The smoked sausage patties are delicious with a little bit of syrup and hot sauce. We stayed at the Courtyard nearby and saw the Cracker Barrel across the way. We don't have this in the Bay Area, although I've been a few times while on the east coast. It's basically a comfort food kinda place. Somewhere you don't care about calories or fat. Just remember that. We actually got take out due to the pandemic at the time. The dining area was open, but we had a killer room upgrade so just decided to eat in. Of course, had to order the country fried steak with mash and gravy. Kiddos had the kids burgers. The steak was huge and big enough for us to share. So we got back and opened up the plate. HUGE! I swore I took a pic of it, but now can't find it. Sorry. We were hungry so we dug right in. Although it was tasty, it became increasingly salty, especially with the gravy smothered all over. I don't even wanna know how much sodium I ate. You know how I mentioned you not supposed to count calories here and worry? Well, hard not to feel it. I like taste but not sure why everything has to be so salty nowadays. Oh well. We love Cracker Barrel! It's a place that has breakfast all the time and good comfort food. Here are some of our favorites: Get the biscuits! (The cornbread is good but not sweet at all. My mom says the sweet cornbread is for Yankees.) My wife loves the sirloin steak. It is pretty good for not being a steakhouse. The side to get is the hashbrown casserole. It is awesome!
