The greens were savory and well seasoned, the grits creamy and filling, and the smoky chicken had great flavor (and for the calorie conscious, a great option). Came here with three other people and was told that it'd be an hour wait. However, the wait was closer to an hour and forty five minutes. The shop they had kept us preoccupied, but near the end, we all got a bit impatient. The service was a bit slow and we had to wait a long time for our food but the location was also understaffed as they lacked servers as well as cooks. When me and my friends visited, there were only two people cooking so the wait for the food also took a while. The food was lukewarm with only one dish being piping hot which means the food had been sitting a while. While out in State College I had attempted to stop at multiple local places to eat while walking around the downtown area, but struck out with each place I attempted to stop at. A lot of those places were closed for the summer or had odd hours. Not being from the area, I was not aware. Frustrated, I started to head out of town and saw Cracker Barrel. Not my first choice, but it would do in a pinch. It did not appear to be busy when I pulled in so I felt that this would be a quick stop and I would be on my way. At least I was right about it being quick, but everything else was off. After being seated it went off the rails. My server was a bit off. Not sure what was going on with her, but it was just odd interacting with him. When she asked me how I was doing I answered with well and asked how she was doing and she answered with something along the lines of "I'd be better if I wasn't working." I kind of brushed that off and placed my order, drink and all, because of how odd that was. I ordered what I usually order when I come to CB, chicken and dumplings. I decided to go with three sides, carrots, mashed potatoes, and mac n cheese. I had asked if they could just use the same gravy from the chicken and dumplings for the mashed potatoes. What I expected in my head is something that didn't appear in front of me. Now, when you order a few things that have gravy and few that don't you would expect that they wouldn't purposely be mixed on one dish. But that is what I got, a mixed plate, or should I say bowl. When I asked for the gravy from the dumplings to be placed on the mashed potatoes, it was everywhere. Usually the gravy for the chicken and dumplings is a bit thicker. But not today, it was more watery than normal. Which essentially made my meal a soup rather than a meal. Add to that, I had like two edible pieces of chicken in the whole thing. The other pieces of chicken had a lot of tendon going on. When the server did come back around it was still odd interactions. I was about done with my meal and that's when my refill for my drink showed up. After I had finished it did take a while for my check to show up. Once I had my check in hand I was making a quick escape. I was definitely unsatisfied with my experience here. read more

My family does not go to Cracker Barrel often; but sometimes, here and there, once a few years. The State College location is the closest, but was the last place we stopped by last night. A rainy Saturday evening in late June, summer school season, a typical calm and regular weekend at central PA. We picked CB for its location, close to Sheetz, highway, and so on. The store and restaurant inside were half crowded. 2 min or so to get seated. The hostess assigned the first table at the entry. Our family loves food and would normally order appetizers, entries and deserts, drinks, so on, so I was a bit concerned on the tiny size of the table for Four(!) and the entry seating for privacy. At that moment, there were six to seven larger tables in the dinning hall were not seated, nor reserved (per the hostess), but she firmly refused to change table for us, in her words, "either you leave and wait for 20 minutes then come back, or stay at the table as is". I asked her why she would not satisfy the customer's need if there is no harm to switch table, she responded that they have a procedure to follow, something related to waiter/waitress rotation. I am kind of disappointed and surprised at the same time at the moment, but "gave up" for staying as the hostess' voices were absolutely much louder and clear and firm than the gentleman at the debate two nights before and I certainly didn't not want to make a family dinner night being another day with arguing and restaurant hunting. Plus, we were hungry. If everything the hostess said was true, I would recommend the store manager to CB's Board, what a good usecase of managerial and execution power through employees! Customer can be sent out to wait for empty table due to staff rotation! Wonderful! Our server at the door table was nice. Unfortunately four of six times we misrecognized her since every minute there were some other servers pass by our No.1 table either for the customers seated behind us or for takeout deliveries. We were certainly attended. The food was OK. We sill ordered appetizers, two small dishes for the sake of table size. Fried pickles were pretty good, high five. The other one was gone quick too but sorry after one night we don't remember what exactly it was - food, for sure. Something special? No. It is on the menu though! My steak&shrimp combo eventually came after a while, along with my wife's chicken salad and my daughters' hamburger and macaroni cheese orders . I was a bit wondering if they would get their food earlier than me - which could leave me hungrier... Not sure which one took the most time in the kitchen but it was absolutely the most well-done "medium" steak ever. My kids timely reminded me well-down could be healthier. Indeed. I swear I walked out 50 pounds heavier and I don't regret one bite!!! My coworker and I both ordered the Country Fried Shrimp which comes with hushpuppies, two sides, and buttermilk biscuits or corn muffins. You can choose to have one of each, uh YEAH! The buttermilk biscuits were delicious, but the corn muffins were a little too hard. I was not sure what to expect when going here honestly. Let start with parking and location. It is in a decent location with other restaurants. They have their own parking lot near the restaurant and actually connected to a Sheetz. It was interesting being able to walk into a restaurant and have an entire shop there. But the shop had some really cool and useful items! I spent a good amount of the time in the shop. And if it gets crowded in the restaurant, someone could easily shop their time away. Food was decent and cheap. But the service was great! I will recommend the chicken n' dumplins though as a go to meal there! read more

First time for me. When we dropped my grandson off from Uni we stopped here. We ordered biscuits with sausage gravy. 3 big, flaky beauties and a small bowl of fabulous gravy. Too much to eat in one sitting so we packed them off to New York. I ate my leftovers 3 days later (microwave for 20 seconds) and they tasted "just baked." Great coffee too! read more

After bringing our drinks we waited over an hour as we watched all the customers around us get their food and leave. Finally the waitress comes over and said "oh your food should be out shortly". Then comes back and asks us what we ordered. We told her. I said I was leaving to forget it because by now it was 1 1/2 hours of waiting. She said "no it will be her in 5 minutes". The food is never hot. The plate might be, but not the food. The catfish is gone. The fried apples have the skin on them. The chocolate mocha is watery. The baked potato has no flavor. The grits are runny. I might sound like I have lot of negatives, but we just paid a lot of money for a meal and none of it was good. Except the chicken and dumplings. Perfect ... well, if they were hot they would have been. Very very disappointed. How do you make a tasteless baked potato?? This was one of my go-to Sunday breakfast spots while I was a student at Penn State. So while in town for the weekend, It didn't take much time to decide on a place for breakfast. We ended up ordering takeout and settled on the "Old Timer's Breakfast). Two eggs, choice of protein, hash brown casserole, biscuits, gravy and grits. All for $10. Service was great! We ordered over the phone and they made the ordering process relatively easy. Also, for a busy Sunday morning- 15minutes for takeout is a steal. When we arrived, our food came out within minutes. They handled our multiple request for various condiments with no complaints. 4 stars and not 5 because: - we had to request condiments that should have already been in a takeout order. - the eggs were cold - the grits were watery - the bacon was not well done as request. Oh Cracker Barrel. You're always in the middle of nowhere. Thus, the only time I've been to you is in State College, where we're in the middle of nowhere. I'm actually confused by Cracker Barrel's whole get up, but somehow it works for them. Once you enter, it's like some weird general store type of place with all these really random trinkets. From things like candy and soda, to rocking chairs and clothing, this place really is.....random. Once you actually get over that fact, then you're ready to be seated for the food. The food here is pretty damn country. From chicken and dumplings, to chicken fried steak, to meat loaf, this place screams country. That isn't necessarily a bad thing either though. If you're looking for something hearty and with plenty of fat, then Cracker Barrel is your spot. The beauty of their entrees is that you get 3 side dishes with your meal. That means, on top of your choice, you get to choose again from things like mac & cheese, apple sauce, french fries, etc. Lots of food ey? My personal choice of fatty goodness is their sample platter. You get topped off with a trio of candied ham, chicken & dumplings, and meat loaf. Add the 3 sides, and whoa nelly, you'll be quite the full one. One thing that's been inconsistent has been the wait. I've had to wait here for an hour before my food is served, and sometimes 20 minutes. WAY too long for the food that I'm getting to be honest since I know it's all in this vat ready to go. Nonetheless, if you're looking to get full for cheap, then Cracker Barrel is your spot. I still can't get over the randomness of the general store though. read more

I have been at several different Cracker Barrel's. This place seems ok. The walk from the main parking lot to the entrance seems to be a long distance. I stopped in Cracker Barrel on a Friday at 645 am and was seated very quickly since there was no more customers in the place. I was informed that the biscuits were not ready yet and would probably be 15 to 20 minutes if I ordered them (which was ok since I was not in a rush). I ordered the Old Timers sampler which came with the biscuits and the waitress said she would wait to put the order in until the biscuits were ready which I was ok with. The food came up in 15 minutes and I enjoyed it. I had the scrambled eggs, grits, biscuits and gravy, hashbrown casserole, and sausage patties. The food came out hot since the waitress had waited to place my order in and I enjoyed it. I liked the hashbrown casserole which was a different take on hashbrowns then I had before. read more

Not anymore. Southern comfort food at reasonable prices. But when we recently tried for a Friday night dinner there, we couldn't get a seat. Crowded? Hardly. No one at the check in desk. A few customers, a few wait staffers. Asked the cashier about the wait for a table. He picked up a two way radio and said something to someone. No action. Outside, where some of the wait staff was trying out the rocking chairs they sell, one told us they no longer staffed that check in booth. The cashier could have told us to go sit anywhere, So we missed out on some yummy stuff. I think they make the second best small steak in State College. I love the potatoes and biscuits and quaint wall signs, the table games and the lack of alcoholic beverages. But I won't go back at least for awhile. read more
