A Cracker Box Restaurant you say? Heck yea, this nifty gem of a restaurant is a blast from the past, and so worth checking out when you are in the Carson Valley! The decor and selection of menu items takes you right back to childhood! Food quality - very good, service - very good, cleanliness - very good and overall experience - very good. Will I be back you ask, definitely! I ordered the black n' blue chicken sandwich and wow was it good. The blue cheese melted in your mouth and the chicken perfectly seasoned with cajun style. While I gotta admit I'm real choosy about my fries, Cracker Box's were good, but to keep up with the nostalgia of the entire experience, I'd like to recommend crinkle fries would do the trick. Why are crinkle cuts such a thing of the past, so few restaurants serve them today that it is a real treat find a place that still does! Don't let my comment about fries however fool you because dining at Cracker Box is well worth it and highly recommended by me to all! The food was great! Huge portions. Great service. I had the eggs and sausage patty. The patty was a fatty too! For as busy as it was we waited maybe 5 minutes for a table and maybe ten minutes for the food. 9 out of 10 would eat there again! read more

I am so surprised that I didn't write a review for this place when we came here a few weeks ago! Oops. Anyways, my son got this in a raffle at a relay for life event for Carson city. We wanted to try it out as we had always driven past but I had been turned away by how small it was. I'm not one to like sitting on top of the table next to me, especially with the size of my family. However, when I walked in I was surprised that this wasn't the case at all. I don't know how they do it but they make their space stretch! The food was amazing, I can bluntly say that. My French toast was soft, moist, but not soggy. My kids pancakes were adorable, as they did a Mickey and Minnie Mouse for them. Needless to say, that was an extremely popular part of the meal. The coffee was tasty, and the little cow cream dispensers were adorable. The waitresses were a little less than friendly, but I think that's mostly due to how packed this place is the whole time they are open. The onion rings had a nice crisp to them, and they didn't rip the onion out when you take a bite! The sausage patty was also very good. On top of everything, the price was EXTREMELY affordable. We will definitely be back to try everything on the menu! read more

Wife and I have been here so many times, then I realized that I've never reviewed it. My wife loves their mushroom omelette and always orders that with their fantastic home fried potatoes. During the winter her choice goes to their Pumpkin pancakes, always fluffy and very tasty. Shes never been disappointed with any meal. I always go for the pork chop with eggs and home fries. The pork chop is almost an inch thick and looks like a pork porterhouse steak. It's always cooked to perfection, cooked through but still juicy and tender. The cooks consistently get my eggs a perfect medium, yolk runny whites not. This place is almost always packed but on occasion we get there and we have a choice of tables. We feel so lucky! The waitress' are Amazing! The place is usually packed with people waiting for tables to open and those waitress' are always moving. They're Always polite, sometimes cheeky, but they are fast and efficient every time in every way. No matter how busy meals are always delivered hot. These Cracker Box waitresses' could and should open a company together to teach people how to be fantastic waitstaff. I've never consistently seen comparable waitstaff anywhere in N Nevada. Hopefully The Cracker Box never changes, we always know what to expect and it's always delicious! We will always recommend it to anyone who will listen and will keep going back! read more

Breakfast is a VERY personal thing. Some people like it hearty and savory, some people like it light and sweet. Some people like to call it "Brunch" and put on fancy clothes and use it as a reason to "Socialize", If you are one of "these" people, you may want to skip the Cracker Box. It will probably offend your fine sensibility... For me, I like my breakfast simple, hearty, and served with an essence of Mel's diner. Though in my world, Flo has tattoos down her arm and serves a mean fresh squeezed O.J. (not that one, though I hear he is spending his time in the Hotel Lovelock here in Northern Nevada and I'm not sure how often he is squeezed these days). The Cracker Box is an institution in Carson City, It's block brick building is a fine metaphor for the restaurant itself. Simple and purposeful. They serve lunch, but I can't say I have ever met anyone who has ever eaten it. They close by 2pm and you go there for breakfast. Don't come here expecting a warm welcome (though the staff is always friendly even though in 15 years I think I have only seen Jerry crack a smile once and I think it might have been by mistake.) Don't come here for fancy. Don't come here expecting to be treated like a VIP (even the local politicians have to wait 15-20 minutes for a seat to open up). Don't come here to wave around your black Amex (they won't be impressed by it, and you will have to march across the street to the ATM like so many other first time diners have). Don't try to come during the peak of Ice fishing season in the Mid-west....they will be closed. DO come here for good food served in a simple but delicious way. DO expect to salt your potatoes to YOUR taste (everybody doesn't like them as salty as you do...quit being selfish). DO try the chorizo or italian sausage and eggs. DO try the special pancakes if they have them (they are ALWAYS good be they pumpkin, or blueberry or whatever). DO enjoy the hectic but laid back atmosphere. DO try the fresh squeezed O.J., it really is that good (it's ok to spit the seed into your napkin, you don't even have to stick your pinky out when you do....) This diner is "Crazy Good"! I'm a breakfast guy and consider it my favorite meal of the day. The Cracker Box was probably the most intensely flavored breakfast experience I have had in a while. However, I was a rooky here as I questioned the very professional waitress regarding the status of my glass of orange juice. I was schooled with a facial expression much like the John Belushi "one eye effect" as she prepared to fresh squeeze my order into a glass. It was then that I felt like a complete dip-shit! Cracker Box is a throwback to 50's diners. I have had lunch here a number of times over the last few years and it is consistently good at what it is - plain small-town diner food served in quantity for a reasonable cost. This last time I had the club sandwich with a side of potato salad. The sandwich is huge. I ate half and had the other half wrapped an boxed for a later meal. It as a pretty traditional club except this had ham instead of turkey. I ordered whole wheat bread (you are given a choice) and it was lightly toasted with a smear of mayo. The bacon was hot and crisp and the tomato and lettuce were fresh. The potato salad is made in-house and is wonderful. It is good sized chunks of red potatoes in a light mayo dressing with bits of red onion and celery. Just the way I make it at home. All of this for under $10 Service is friendly and efficient. It is a bit loud - no soft lights and trendy ambiance here. People come to eat a decent meal, not to linger. No WiFi. They do NOT take credit cards, so you must pay with cash or check - another throw back to an earlier era. This place is a solid hit or miss. And be because of that, I have to give it a couple of stars only. The first time I came here, I had their eggs benedict. Let me tell you, that impressed the heck out of me. Not only was the price perfect (less than $10) but the coffee was ever forth coming, cream was served in the little cow and the service was great. Parking is off to the side and the place is easy to see from the street. You walk in at the corner and the wait is only a few moments. However, there's pretty much always people here so you get a feel as to how good this place is. The next time I came, no eggs benedict, so you'll realize there's a board with the specials for the day. This is pretty nice as you'll get some really good eats and they cooks will mix things up. Again, coffee and milk in the cows, so I was happy. The third time I cam here, the eggs benedict was "eh", I suppose it was because they had a special on "crabs eggs benedict" of which I was not a fan of. It was just your typical eggs benedict, and there was no moo cow for the cream. Came here again, and found one of their veggie omelets. Boy was that good! Large chunks of cheese, great size and though no moo cow cream, the omelet more than made up. And then the next time, the veggie omelet didn't impress. The potatoes seemed kind of "eh" and the sizing just didn't seem right. In addition, no moo cow and my coffee cup went dry (for 5-10 minutes at the least) The wait staff is fairly attentive (pretty girl near the front door on weekends does a good job, the folks in the back... not so good). Seating is kind of scrunched if it's busy and you're by the front door. On Sundays, you have your typical pre/post church going folks, so you'll see a variety of attire and will probably fit in w/o problem. There are other times I've been here and ordered different things, but it really does seem hit or miss. The food was delicious! The short stack was fluffy and sweet. There is no doubt that the orange juice was freshly squeezed. The waitresses were attentive and courteous, and brought us exactly what we asked for. My entire group enjoyed the food and the service by the wait staff. However, the owner Jerry should be wearing a shirt that reads, "Whites Only". I will not be back and I will never recommend this place to anyone. From the moment we walked in he was rude. When I let one of the waitresses know that we were a group of 20 she checked and came back to tell me, "I'm sorry but we won't be able to seat all of you together. Is it ok if we separate you?" As the dinning area was small we understood so we told her it was alright. Right away Jerry came rushing over (without a smile or even a greeting), "how many of you are here now?" As a customer and wanting to make it clear what our entire group size was I began to explain that we were 20 in total. Without acknowledging me he interrupted me and said "no, how many of you are here?" At this point another member of my group told him that only 16 of us were on site. Jerry then pointed to a table near us and said "Well, 6 of you can sit there." After a minute or two of trying to figure out how to split up our families so that 6 of us could sit at that table another waitress then came over to escort us to another table where the remaining 10 could sit. Again Jerry came back to tell us that more people needed to sit at the first table of 6 (even though there were already 6 members of our party at the first table) so that we could fit at the second table. There was an empty table for four near us but I assumed this would be used for the rest of our party who hadn't arrived yet. We settled in and began reviewing the menu but every time I looked up (my 6 year old son was seated at the other table so I kept looking over) Jerry was either leering in our direction or the direction of the other half of our group. Again, the wait staff were very courteous and began bringing us items right away. But I started to notice that as new patrons would enter Jerry was very courteous to them, while joyfully greeting them. It should be noted that we were the only non-whites in the restaurant. Once the remaining 4 members of our party showed up Jerry was very rude to them. Again, without greeting them (he had just joyfully greeted a white couple that walked in) he told them, "we can't sit you with them you're going to have to wait." We understood that we were a large group in a small place, however, he seemed to only take an aggressive tone with members of our group. He made them feel so uncomfortable in that quick interaction that they left. We should have left as well but had already ordered. As we ate Jerry would walk around from table to table asking patrons how their food was and if they needed anything. He did not stop at either of our tables. As people left the restaurant Jerry thanked them for coming. We did not receive the same send off. Jerry's attitude and demeanor is not indicative of the people in the area or even of those in the restaurant. The wait staff were great. Even those who sat around us were very courteous and a couple even complimented us on how well behaved our children were. Jerry needs an attitude adjustment. We were a group of 4 families who spent about $50 each in the short time we were there. The total could have been $250+. As good as the food was this place left a bad taste in my mouth. read more

The turn off to this little establishment was the Owner Jerry, we came in with a large group of 16, he was extremely rude when asking his questions regarding how many were in the group even to the point where he raised his voice and asked how many are here now.!!! First of all we didn't asked to be seated together, we were happy with whatever seating was available. One of our friends came in 15 min later and after being approached by Jerry the owner with his rude tone and no sense of customer service skills, they decided just to leave and not eat at this establishment. The best place to eat in Carson when you stay up until sunrise at various bars that don't shut down. It was Toad's and became Remedies, or the other way around. Excellent food at a reasonable price. This is another great breakfast place. Service is friendly, attentive and smiling. Foods always good too. It's a favorite after AM swim practice, leaving the kids happy and full after their workout.
