Getaway Cafe was recommended to us by my brother in law and sister in law. They visited before during their trips to Lake Tahoe. We checked it out this morning for breakfast. They had the banner for best brunch 2025 hanging nicely. Diane, the owner, put us on the waitlist and also showed us to our table. Very warm welcome! We started off with coffee. Hubby had the Chorizo Quesadilla and enjoyed it very much. The portion was enough for 2 meals. Sure enough, he took half home. I had the Coconut French Toast, the small portion. Even though it's supposed to be small, I still left some on my plate. Love the fresh sliced bananas with it! There are more menu items we would love to try. I stopped by The Getaway Cafe with my wife and two friends, and the hospitality here is truly top-notch. Our server, Carmen, was incredibly kind and gave us some great menu suggestions. To make the experience even better, the owner, Diane, actually came by our table to introduce herself. It's always really nice to see an owner who is that attentive to her customers and invested in the dining experience. For my meal, I ordered the breakfast burrito which, as you can see from the photo, comes wrapped in a great spinach tortilla and served with sour cream, and salsa. It was loaded with egg, chorizo, green and red peppers, onions, and pepper jack cheese. I was a bit surprised, though, because even with so many distinct, flavorful ingredients packed inside, those flavors didn't quite come through. The pepper jack cheese was just a little too heavy-handed and ended up overpowering everything else in the burrito. The other minor issue was that I had specifically ordered hashbrowns with my meal, but I was served the breakfast potatoes instead. They were still perfectly crisp and seasoned well, but just wasn't exactly what I asked for. Overall, the atmosphere and the service made it a great experience, but I just wish the burrito had a better balance with less cheese, and that the sides hadn't gotten mixed up. I found The Getaway Cafe through a local recommendation, and he did not steer me wrong. Breakfast here was great. Portions are big. My husband and I shared the chilaquiles with chorizo (their specialty) along with their coconut French toast. The chilaquiles dish was tasty. We felt the coconut French toast with bananas was okay and a little overhyped. Service was perfect. Our waitress kept checking on us and I noticed the owner personally visited each table as well. This is our second time here, but first time back in 7 years. It was just as good as I remembered. We arrived in Saturday around 8am and it wasn't busy at all, which was really nice. There is a lot of parking. The inside is a little small, but it's super cozy. We were seated right away. All of the waitresses were super friendly and helpful. I ordered the Morning After with sausage. It was so good. The potatoes were seasoned perfectly. The biscuit was nice and fluffy and the sausage gravy was super flavorful. My husband ordered the eggs benedict and he really liked it. We were in and out which was nice as we wanted to beat the traffic back down the hill to get home. We will absolutely be back the next time we are in Tahoe. read more

This was such a unique find outside the bustling South Lake scene and well worth the quick jaunt to get there. We were greeted by a sweet lady who happened to be the owner, playing host and seating customers. Upon seating us, we were informed of the specials and notified of their homemade, popular chorizo. I immediately knew I had to order a dish that featured it, and the omelette was my choice. Cheesy, flavorful, packed with veggies and chorizo, encompassed with eggs made for a perfect brunch. We even got the mimosa sampler - a bottle of bubbly with your choice of three juices, to split amongst our table of three was enough to keep us happy. We came in on a Monday morning before heading back, it was pretty packed inside, but we got a table in under five minutes. We ordered the Chilaquiles, the chocolate chip pancakes, and an orange juice. I was hoping The Gateway Cafe would be a 5 star experience. The staff is so friendly and accommodating! A "Shout Out" to Bailey. Unfortunately, the food was a bit of a disappointment. Maybe the cook was having a bad day. It happens. My friend loves pancakes. When I saw The Getaway Cafe offered giant pancakes...I told her we needed to go check out the pancakes. The giant pancake wasn't quite so giant. I've seen a "senior" pancake the size of a 12 inch dinner plate. As I previously mentioned...they are very accommodating. My friend ordered the breakfast special. She wanted 1 pancake, 1 French toast, 1 sausage and 1 bacon. I told her she was crazy asking for so many deviations...but Bailey told her it was no problem. Wow! that was impressive. My friend said the pancake wasn't all that fluffy and the French toast was chewy. Another friend ordered Corned Beef Hash. It was tasty...but slightly burnt. Chicken Fried Steak is one of my go to breakfast items. I was excited it was made fresh and not of the frozen variety. Unfortunately, it lacked flavor. The gravy helped. Hubby ordered the chilaquiles. He loved the beans, but said he would pass on the chilaquiles next time. I wish I could give The Gateway Cafe 3 3/4 stars. Small restaurant so expect a little wait! But we came here after taking the kids to the snow area just a minute away. Greeted immediately the owner and she was the sweetest! Waiter explained the menu and what they would recommend. Honestly, I didn't have much hope since most restaurants in Tahoe is bland and flavorless but this place! Really good!! This place is an absolute must. It's our tradition each time we visit, to hit this place at least once. It's worth the drive outside of Tahoe, if that's where you're vacationing. The service is exceptional. Everyone- including the bussers, were refilling coffee, checking in, etc. The owner is so sweet. She walks around, seats people, serves food, and it's overall just warm and welcoming. She chats with everyone and she really makes you feel like you're eating at her house. First of all WOW! My husband, son and I were greeted and seated right away by the owner of the café Diane. She was so kind and guided us through the menu. EVERYTHING is made fresh to order. Where do I start... Me and my friends went snowboarding for the first time, and on the way back we all were feeling a soreness that we have never felt before. We had a great dinner last night, an expensive dinner might I say, so breakfast this morning was planned to be lighter on the wallets but we needed substance. The Getaway Cafe was exactly what we needed. The menu was reasonably priced (and the service is worth everything), the options were ridiculously accommodating and all delicious sounding. My choice was written in the stars. I am absolutely blown away by this French toast. The mix of sweet and savory made it not too sweet to stomach. And stomach it I did, ferociously. 12/10 Both of my friends also ate their food in silence, because that's what you do when the food is good. So delicious, the food was amazing and fresh. I got to try the huevos rancheros which has homemade salsa, avocado, eggs, fried beans, and their famous chorizo. Definitely a go to when stopping by this restaurant. The owner was so kind and very happy to server her customers. My dog jack loved their eggs and the cook made sure to not add any salt for my doggy. Jack enjoyed his eggs so much we order a 2nd plate. The environment is cozy and very home style. Stopped in here before heading home after an overnight trip to South Lake Tahoe. Reviews were great and it was near our air BNB. It's on the smaller side but we got seated right away. Service was absolutely amazing. The owner stopped by to make recommendations and just check in on us, you rarely get service like that anymore. We even saw her dropping off food to some tables. They have a great looking menu, choosing my meal was hard! I ended up going with the hangover helper since the server said they make their own chorizo and it's very popular. Great recommendation! Chorizo had some heat, perfect amount for me. My husband had the country fried steak and he liked it, he loved that they serve the gravy on the side because he doesn't like his food drowning in gravy (I'm the exact opposite lol). I had a very upsetting experience here. Staff asked me for "papers" for my service dog, which is illegal under ADA law. I was treated differently and felt discriminated against because of my service animal. This is not just poor service -- it is a violation of federal law. Businesses should be properly trained on basic service animal rights, especially in a tourist area. I would not recommend this place to anyone, especially those with service animals. read more

As always and again we stopped at our favorite breakfast and lunch spot on our way home from South Lake Tahoe. The Get away Cafe is seriously the best food! It always amazes me. I tried the veggie burger on grilled sour dough crusted with Parmesan. The veggie burger was delightful loaded with avocado sprouts tomatoes lettuce and pickles with crispy fries. From the first bite I was in heaven. So delicious! My husband had the traditional eggs Benedict with hash browns. And it was clean plate club for him. This cute little cafe near South Lake Tahoe was a nice surprise. The service was impeccable. The veggie Benedict was perfect. The eggs cooked medium, the English muffins toasted just right and the hollandaise sauce was rich and full of flavor. The hash browns were brown on top and warm and mushy on the inside, the way they should prepared. They also added sautéed onions and tomatoes to the Benedict, which add some wonderful depth to the meal. One of the best eggs Benedict I've ever had. Coffee was delicious. What a lovely place to stop for breakfast on your way out of South Shore (not to suggest an "in bound lunch" wouldn't be equally delightful). There was indoor dining but we chose outdoor. Diane, the owner, seemed to place real importance on greeting all of her guests. She was very helpful when it came to suggesting items off the extensive menu. She told us they were known for their chorizo, so we made sure to include that in our selections. We had the Chorizo Quesadilla and Huevos Rancheros with Chorizo. Both were excellent. As promised, the chorizo was very flavorful and not overly spicy. Our little guy had the Mickey Mouse pancake meal. The service was very prompt. When it took a little too long to provide a decaf refill (they had to brew a new pot) they insisted on preparing a to-go cup for the road. Every staff member walking back asked if I needed anything. The dog friendly patio was a big plus. The food was over the top good!! A place that comes recommended by locals is a gem worth exploring and this breakfast cafe did not disappoint! Be ready for a wait since there is limited seating inside (no outdoor seating in the winter) but that shows how popular it is too. For 3 on a Tuesday around 11:30 we waited 40ish minutes and they do not take reservations. Our waitress was wonderful and gave us insights on our menu questions. The owner was even walking around helping and giving smiling hellos to everyone. There aren't many diners around where the owner of the place is working side by side with the staff to greet customers, bus and clean tables, and even hold an occasional baby so the single mom in the corner could enjoy her breakfast in peace. That's why Diane has been in business almost 20 years this coming May. Add the fact the food was amazing with rave reviews by all at my table of 6 from the chorizo breakfast, to the special banana foster French toast, or the blueberry lemon compote pancakes, this cafe hit all the right buttons for the weekend getaway. It was so good, we went back the next day. If you're ever in the area, don't skip out on this gem. We'll be back for sure. read more
