Greg seemed to me to be a humble man, curious about lots of stuff, but so not pushy.

Tucked away in Morgan Hill and part of the local Santa Clara Valley Wine Trail, this winery offers…read morea variety of estate grown wines, olive oil and honey from the estate. Lion Ranch specializes in Rhone and Provence varietal blends so expect unique blends of red and white wines along the lines of Viogner, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Mourvedre, Terret Noir, and more. All very clean, smooth, and tasty. MOST OF ALL - I liked that the wines had less sulfites (no more headaches for me!) There are 3 flight tasting options - white, red, and mixed (which includes a rose). All three are great options and value at 6 tasters for $20. If you choose to purchase a bottle they are all mostly around $26-45. I loved that this place allowed you to bring outside food as it was the perfect picnic spot but if you don't, they also have a mini fridge of charcuterie items to purchase. The winery itself is intimate, but with ample outdoor seating. A small babbling fountain, corn hole, and umbrellas for shade round out the ambiance. It was perfect for a lazy Saturday afternoon. Also thank you to Jen & Mike for making the tasting so special and fun! I loved their knowledge of the wines and hospitality. Highly recommend a visit with friends :)

Would've loved to sit outside but it was too hot of a weather. oh and did you know they had olive oils here? like you can do not just a wine tasting but an olive oil tasting? we didn't know until someone came in to purchase their olive oil. one of my friends decided to ask if we could try it out and tbh, it was actually a good quality of olive oil. the oil was pretty light so it was good! my friend ended up buying a bottle! the wine was good, but i should've gone with the flight of white wine. i quite enjoy drinking white a lot more, but you just never know, what if a red really taste good until you try it! Of course! I'll come back one of these days to get the white wine to add to my collection!

I signed up for the $100/4 bottles quarterly membership, and it's been great until recently. I noticed that they've been charging me $130 instead of $100 for the past 6 quarters without informing me of the change. I've gone in person to the San Martin location and spoke to two different people on two different occasions who told me the price should be $100 and that Theresa could fix it. I left my name and number, and no call from Theresa both times. Called the Hollister location today to resolve this issue. The person who picked up told me that they sent two notice emails out and that it probably went to my spam. I have never gotten a DeRose email in spam because it's been marked as "important" ever since I signed up for the membership. It turns out that I got one email about a sparkling wine event. At the bottom of that email is a short notice on membership price increases. There should be a separate email with the proper subject line and a dedicated message on the membership price increases. I'm not scrutinizing every event email for a potential price increase. I cancelled my membership. Not very happy and will not be supporting this business again in the future.

We saw a wine tasting sign at the end of the driveway if you turn in at the very first opening. It wasn't busy at all. It was mostly the owners daughter and daughter's boyfriend helping pour the tastings. We saw the owner come by a couple of times. There's both outdoor and indoor seatings. The restroom is actually located in one of their buildings that you will see when you walk down to the tasting room. Felt weird to go into someone's living area. $20 tasting fee for 4 wines. You can revisit the wines. But most of the wines were good. European Bordeaux style wines which were bold and complex. Only one wine was tannic. It truly feels like you're hanging in your friend's backyard. If your friend just happens to make delicious wine and have beautiful westward views of the valley. There was music playing, no sense of urgency, and the namesake pooch Moose to occasionally provide a little company. The owner and head winemaker Rich and assistant wine maker Uli took their time explaining the process, the wines, and anything else you may think to ask. Rich even let us pick fruit from his citrus trees to take home. What a beautiful day and beautiful experience. We plan on going back in the fall for the harvest festival!

Upon entering the tasting room there was no acknowledgement of our presence which felt very awkward (esp with only a few other patrons tasting) and available wine pourers. The staff were not smiling and were very short with us when we said we were there to taste. It definitely put a damper on the start of our day... We wondered if it had something to do with them merging or becoming Cor de Valle winery. It seemed confusing to us whether we were drinking wine from one or the other. Once we got past the odd lack of welcome and went to tables outside though, we had a wonderful time. Such a beautiful upper and lower courtyard surrounded by vineyards; it almost feels like you have been transported to somewhere in Europe. The wines were delicious. I loved the 22 Pirates Blend and the Viogner most.

The staff member behind the bar greeted us with a blank, deadpan stare (otherwise known as a "GenZ Stare") that made the whole interaction feel awkward from the start. When we mentioned it was our first time visiting and that we were excited to be there, there was no warmth, no enthusiasm, and no effort to tell us about the wines or the property. Even the pours seemed careless. I know this is Gilroy and not Napa, but I still expected a welcoming experience and better wine service. Unfortunately, both the service and the wine itself were disappointing. The best part of this place was definitely the beautiful grounds, which would make a gorgeous wedding setting. Maybe this place is better suited as an event venue than a wine tasting destination, but based on my experience, I would not return. The two stars are for the beautiful grounds.
