I gifted a friend the chocolate bar making experience and we were here on a sunny Sunday afternoon with a group of other chocolate lovers. The shop was clean and bright and when you first walk in you are surrounded with all the chocolate goodies on the shelves. The bar making experience is in the back but Tim the owner said they are expanding their Pearl location so in the future this experience will be over in their other location. Tim was funny and engaging and gave an amazing presentation about chocolate and their shop's history and future. I loved that they take pride in their sustainability and responsible sourcing and were so touched by their family stories. You can clearly feel the love and the passion for chocolate and the joy they bring with their tasty treats and experiences. The whole experience took about 2 hours (hairnets and all) but we really learned a lot and got to be creative with our toppings and took home our yummy treats (and bought extra chocolate from the shop). Our company signed up for a chocolate build-a-bar tasting - a very fun team event and can I say, I was looking forward to it! Did someone say chocolate tasting? There is ample street parking near Creo so it's not difficult to find a spot. The store itself is gorgeous, beautifully displayed chocolates in delicious flavors and gorgeous packaging. The tasting is in the back of the store. Tables are set with seating, chocolate toppings, and they even provide hairnets - the whole shabang! Tim the owner and also chocolate maker shared his story and also educated us on everything CHOCOLATE, lots of fun stories, learned so much and he was funny too! It lasted about 90 minutes with lots of chocolate to try! We also spent time building our own bar of chocolate - lots of tasty fillings like chocolate nibs, potato chips, toffee, shaved coconut and a myriad of spices. The packaging is also legit! My friend and I did the chocolate tour and had a pretty fab time overall. The tour was educational and interesting... held my attention most of the time. The samples were plentiful and very very tasty. The person hosting the tour did make a few religious comments and that was a bit uncomfortable, but nobody seemed to make a big deal about it. The shop itself is a beautiful old building with lots of classic features. The chocolate is outstanding but a little expensive. Plan on buying for quality over quantity. The staff was very kind and it was a really great experience. Highly recommended if you want a unique look into local chocolate manufacturing. Let me tell you about the time I visited 3 chocolate shops in 1 day, and called it "self- care." Even though I was the least excited about Creo, I decided to visit them first, because they were closing the earliest (at 4pm). I was able to park right around the corner, but parking was not free. You can pay by meter or parking app. The outside of the shop is gorgeous. When I stepped inside, I was immediately hit with the intense aroma of chocolate. This might be what heaven smells like. As I perused the chocolate bars, a chocolatier told me to let her know if I wanted to sample anything. I'd tried Creo chocolate before, but honestly didn't love it. I was curious to see if it tasted better straight from the source-- and it really, really did. I ended up buying a dark chocolate Raspberry bar and a passion fruit truffle. The truffle was gone way too fast for the price, but I was very satisfied with the bar. It wasn't until I was halfway through ordering that I noticed an entire chocolate class being conducted in the back. 7-8 people were seated on stools with hair nets and aprons. Aside from the classes, Creo also offers a package for creating your own chocolate bar. I think that sounds like it would be a fun thing to do for a date or something. I'm obviously not going to be stopping by the chocolate factory all the time, but it was cool to check out. The chocolate seriously tastes 100 times better straight from the source, so, if you are a Creo fan, you should definitely stop by. read more

Creo could mean something totally different to these folks- but the word really means Believe in Spanish. If I'm talking about the coating only, our bite-size selections at this Lloyd District chocolatier in Portland, had a pleasant cocoa taste and fillings in each, had a subtle hint of flavor. This space houses their factory where they're whipping up their specialty cocoa powders, bagged items and other goodies. The shelving consists of goodies made with Ecuadorian chocolate for their darks- not sure about their milk chocolate and white origins. This Creo location has a dramatic inside with high ceilings and these impressive, almost apothecary cabinets on either side of the shop. I wanted to hang with my daughter over a cuppa hot chocolate or h. cocoa- but, these folks don't make neither. So, we settled on a box of 12- which was steep at $42- but it was nice they honor the 10% Yelp Check-In offer. Stumbled upon this lovely chocolate shop/factory. As soon as you open the door, you're hit with that sweet, fruity cocoa smell. It's intoxicating. The friendly owner greeted us immediately with several yummy chocolate samples. I didn't intend on buying anything, but he worked his magic. I'm still dreaming about the black lava salted caramels. This past Christmas Eve I was desperately looking for a chocolate shop for a last-minute gift for an out-of-town guest. Creo came up in my Yelp search results and I couldn't be more happy with discovering this new-to-me chocolatier. And what a discovery it was! Creo has this old world, magical vibe right off... even before walking through the front door. The historic building is covered in beautiful vintage tile, and has a Moorish architectural aesthetic that is just delightful! Those beautiful arched doorways and windows perfectly set the tone when walking into this special place. Inside the chocolate is well-displayed, with two large wall displays containing their chocolate drinking powders, bars, and packaged goods. In addition, there are several cases containing their gorgeous array of truffles. You'll find every kind of chocolate imaginable in this place... with so many opportunities to sample their scrumptious creations. Creo freely offers samples, so don't feel intimidated if they keep offering. Go for it, and just accept all the delicious goodness as part of the chocolate buying experience! Creo chocolates is mind-blowingly delicious. There are so many different varieties and flavor combinations, but a few of my favorites are the salted milk chocolate truffle, the blood orange chocolate truffle, and the raspberry chocolate truffle. Wonderful little shop! The shop has some old world feel to it with wood shelves and draws and being part shop and part chocolate manufacturing location. I was wandering in the neighborhood and passed by this fun shop so stopped in for some yummy chocolate. Plus! They had a jam/jelly popup happening on site the day I was there. It was very busy inside with an active tour but one of the sales reps immediately greeted us and offered us some samples. One of the samples was a chocolate gummy bear. I recently took another trip to Creo Chocolate for a Make-A-Bar tour with my best friend and her kids. They loved it, and there was definitely not a lack of chocolate samples! One thing that stood out to me was that we were asked if we liked white chocolate. Most of us weren't big fans, but then the caramelized white chocolate was sent around. I ended up buying a bar, and everyone else seemed impressed too. This is such a fun and unique experience, and I highly recommend it for all ages (as long as you like chocolate!). The tour is informative and engaging, and you learn a lot about how chocolate is made and where it comes from. I did the build a bar chocolate experience. It was so so fun. I learned a lot about how a chocolate bar is made from sourcing to harvest. I'm a self professed non chocolate fan in the sense that it's not the first thing I reach for when craving sweets. Turns out I've just been eating cheap milk chocolate and missing out in quality goods. Creo is quality and we learned from Tim on the care that goes into their product. The class is fun, Tim and Kevin are hilarious. If you're looking for a fun Portland tour experience, this is the way to go. I sampled too many chocolate pieces to count and then made my very own bar. We LOVE chocolate, full stop. The chocolate here is one of the very few that we love above all others, especially the Black Sesame Brittle. Creo offers a wide selection of chocolates that all have their own claim to excellence and offer different experiences for those wanting to savor their depth and complexity, or for those just wanting to eat a really wonderful candy bar. The Black Sesame Brittle is both of these things, just the perfect pairing with the perfectly selected cocoa. It just nails it on aroma, mouthfeel, and flavor. A beautiful aroma that matches its flavor, a rare feat, it sometimes seems, melty, creamy, just sweet enough, a joy to melt in the mouth or chew with the bursts of sesame flavor and crunch and flavors that linger, touching off new experiences in every part of the palette and even pleasurable in the throat (probably great for easing a cough). Good LORD, you just haven't lived until you've tried this! I'd say it is even a more perfect pairing with great chocolate than the humble hazelnut or almond, a flavor and texture so special. You have to try it. I can't do it justice. While all chocolate (generally) is good chocolate, and while, especially now, there are so many different chocolates and adventurous pairings... in the amazing array of truly good chocolate, few jump to mind and actually stand out enough to make us want a supply at home. For us, Creo and their Black Sesame Brittle join the drool worthy ranks of chocolates like Teuscher, Läderach, Mishka Kosolapy, Chocolatier Ivourien, and Meiji Black. My fiancé surprised me with Creo's chocolate tour for my birthday! I was so excited as soon as we walked up to the door. This was a very cool experience. It smelled amazing as soon as we walked in and you can tell it's quality stuff just by looking at the store area. I try to visit pretty much every handmade chocolate spot. This is hand's down, the best chocolate I've had in Portland (and perhaps the top spot overall!). Some highlights are the PB squares, the Rasberry chocolates, and I love how the blend some spice/chilli into the chocolates. Listen, I know the prices seem steep but the quality and craftsmanship are literally unparalleled so you should absolutely pop in and get some goods. I happened upon this spot while literally servicing my car and realized what a gold mine it was. They had some delicious samples when I popped in and I was definitely hooked from the start. My family has splurged on the giant box of chocolates but I have also gone in and gotten smaller treats in the smaller boxes. Honestly, all of the flavors are good and I say this even after trying chocolates with ingredients I'm usually not a big fan of. Service is so darn helpful and friendly and they make sure to pack your box with the best little treats -- i.e. one of the chocolates didn't seem perfect so they just gave it to me as a free sample and made sure to pick a better one for my box. The interior looks small from the outside but has a good amount of space -- also have shelves on goods to look at other than just the truffles/chocolates being sold as well. First it's in a chic part or Portland with cute boutiques and plenty of amazing eats. The shop itself was OMG so cute and filled with chocolate options catering to any palate. I have sought out dark chocolate with spice SCORE they had multiple options for me to explore. I purchased 3 bars for $10 each and a five pack of their truffles. I spent under $50 and for the quality I was satisfied. Finally, the proprietor of the such was incredibly courteous as we talked about chocolates and my experience visiting Portland. Being a foodie he offered a suggestion for a Burmese restaurant just a few blocks away which was amazing. What a great afternoon we spent at Creo, learning all about the journey of cacao seeds all the way from Ecuador to Portland so they can be handled with the loving masterful care of Tim, owner and master chocolate maker at Creo. We not only learned a TON about the history of chocolate and how it is made, but also got tons of sample tastes of a huge variety of chocolate 'bark' that exhibited the many ways chocolate can be rendered. I'm concerned about the lack of inclusivity and professionalism shown during the class. In general, the instructor was very sarcastic toward participants throughout the session. More specifically, an adult participant on the spectrum was engaging appropriately by answering questions and sharing relevant facts, yet the instructor's responses appeared dismissive and abrupt. We had the privilege of visiting Creo on a school field trip. The owner taught us all about chocolate harvesting and processing, all while weaving in the beautiful story of his journey with his partner and muse. I'm sure that last part meant nothing to the kids, but it meant a lot to me. This man and his chocolate are full of heart. We made chocolate bars- and the kids loved the hands-on experience. They were encouraged to be creative with customizing their chocolate. It's hard to describe- the kids were treated as able independent people, not infantilized, and they stepped up accordingly.
